Porous 3D Prussian blue/cellulose aerogel as a decorporation agent for removal of ingested cesium from the gastrointestinal tract

Efficient sequestration of cesium ions using phosphoric acid-modified activated carbon fibers from aqueous solutions

In this study, acid-modified activated carbon fibers (ACF-Ps) were synthesized by phosphorylation. Three different types of ACF-based adsorbents functionalized with PO43-, P2O74-, or P3O105- ions, namely, ACF-P1, ACF-P2, and ACF-P3, were prepared by phosphorylating ACF with trisodium phosphate (Na3PO4), sodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate (Na2H2P2O5), and sodium tripolyphosphate (Na5P3O10), respectively, and utilized as adsorbents to remove cesium ions (Cs+) from aqueous solutions. Among the tested adsorbents, ACF-P3 exhibited the highest Cs+ adsorption capacity of 37.59 mg g-1 at 25 °C and pH 7 which is higher than that of ACF (5.634 mg g-1), ACF-P1 (19.38 mg g-1), and ACF-P2 (30.12 mg g-1) under the same experimental conditions. More importantly, the Cs+ removal efficiencies of ACF-P3 (82.90%), ACF-P2 (66.2%), ACF-P1 (34.2%) were 29.3-, 23.4-, and 12.11-fold higher than that of un-treated ACF (2.83%). The results suggested that the phosphorylation with Na5P3O10 is highly suitable for Cs+ adsorption which effectively functionalizes ACF with a greater number of phosphate functional groups. Adsorption and kinetic data well-fitted the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order model, respectively, which indicated the monolayer adsorption of Cs+ onto ACF-P1, ACF-P2, and ACF-P3 which were largely controlled by chemisorption. Overall, phosphoric acids containing different phosphate-based polyanions (PO43-, P2O74-, or P3O105-) enriched -OH and/or -COOH surface functional groups of ACF in addition to P-containing surface groups (PO, C-P-O, C-O-P, and P-O) and facilitated the Cs+ adsorption through surface complexation and electrostatic interactions.

MXenes as emerging adsorbents for removal of environmental pollutants

MXenes are a recently emerging class of two-dimensional nanomaterials that have gained considerable interest in the field of environmental protection. Owing to their high surface area, abundant terminal groups, and unique two-dimensional layered structures, MXenes have demonstrated high efficacy as adsorbents for various pollutants. Here we focused on the latest developments in the field of MXene-based adsorbents, including the structure and properties of MXenes, their synthesis and modification methods, and their adsorption performance and mechanisms for various pollutants. Among the pollutants that have been reported to be adsorbed by MXenes are radionuclides (U(VI), Sr(II), Cs(I), Eu(III), Ba(II), Th(IV), and Tc(VII)/Re(VII)), heavy metals (Hg(II), Cu(II), Cr(VI), and Pb(II)), dyes, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), antibiotics (tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, and sulfonamides), antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and other contaminates. Moreover, future directions in MXene research are also suggested in this review.

Hybrid and Single-Component Flexible Aerogels for Biomedical Applications: A Review

The inherent disadvantages of traditional non-flexible aerogels, such as high fragility and moisture sensitivity, severely restrict their applications. To address these issues and make the aerogels efficient, especially for advanced medical applications, different techniques have been used to incorporate flexibility in aerogel materials. In recent years, a great boom in flexible aerogels has been observed, which has enabled them to be used in high-tech biomedical applications. The current study comprises a comprehensive review of the preparation techniques of pure polymeric-based hybrid and single-component aerogels and their use in biomedical applications. The biomedical applications of these hybrid aerogels will also be reviewed and discussed, where the flexible polymeric components in the aerogels provide the main contribution. The combination of highly controlled porosity, large internal surfaces, flexibility, and the ability to conform into 3D interconnected structures support versatile properties, which are required for numerous potential medical applications such as tissue engineering; drug delivery reservoir systems; biomedical implants like heart stents, pacemakers, and artificial heart valves; disease diagnosis; and the development of antibacterial materials. The present review also explores the different mechanical, chemical, and physical properties in numerical values, which are most wanted for the fabrication of different materials used in the biomedical fields.

A Prussian blue analog as a decorporation agent for the simultaneous removal of cesium and reactive oxygen species

Radioactive cesium (Cs) is a significant concern due to its role as a major byproduct of nuclear fission and its potential for radioactive contamination. Internal contamination with radioactive Cs is characterized by immoderate production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in severe radiation damage. Therefore, the development of therapeutic strategies should focus on enhancing the excretion of radioactive Cs and reducing radiation-induced oxidative damage. However, current therapeutic drugs like Prussian blue (PB) have limited efficacy in addressing these issues. In this study, we present Cu3[Fe(CN)6]2 (CuFe) nanoparticles, a Prussian blue analog (PBA), which can not only efficiently sequester Cs but also exhibit resistance against radiation damage. The results of the adsorption studies demonstrate that CuFe outperforms PB in terms of adsorption performance. Further mechanistic investigations indicate that the increased adsorption capacity of CuFe may be attributed to the presence of additional defects resulting from the [Fe(CN)6] missing linkers. Moreover, CuFe mimics the functions of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) by effectively eliminating O2˙- and H2O2 while scavenging ˙OH, thereby mitigating ROS induced by radiative Cs. Importantly, in vivo study confirms the efficient Cs decorporation capability of CuFe. The fecal cumulative excretion rate of CuFe reaches 69.5%, which is 1.45 times higher than that of PB (48.8%). These findings demonstrate that CuFe exhibits excellent Cs removal performance and ROS scavenging ability, making it an attractive candidate for the treatment of Cs contamination.

Oral formulation of Prussian blue with improved efficacy for prophylactic use against thallium

OBJECTIVE

The present study is aimed to enhance the efficacy of Insoluble Prussian blue (PB) in the stomach. PB formulation was developed comprising of PB in combination with pH modifying agents particularly magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, sodium carbonate, and sodium bicarbonate. pH profile and the binding efficacy of the final formulation was evaluated in simulated gastric fluid (SGF).

METHODS

The capsule formulation was optimized with desired in vitro characteristics. The final formulations (FF1-FF4) were evaluated for drug release, pH profile, and binding efficacy for thallium (Tl). The stability studies were performed in terms of drug assay, Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). The in vivo study was performed in rats to determine the removal efficacy of optimized formulation (FF4) for Tl.

RESULTS

The PB formulation consisting of optimized PB granules and pH modifying agents showed a significant increase in the binding efficacy for Tl in SGF at an equilibrium time of 24 h. The Maximum Binding Capacity (MBC) of FF1-FF4 was found to be higher than commercially available Radiogardase^®-Cs capsules and PB granules alone in SGF. The blood Tl level in rats treated with FF4 showed three-fold decreases in the level of Tl in the blood (C_max) and Area under Curve (AUC) as compared to the control.

CONCLUSION

The results revealed that the developed oral PB formulation has a significantly higher efficiency of binding Tl at the acidic pH of the stomach thereby reducing its absorption into the systemic circulation. Thus, the optimized formulation of PB with pH-modifying agents is a better drug for prophylactic use in thallium ingestion.

Radioactivity/Radionuclide (U-232 and Am-241) Removal from Waters by Polyurea-Crosslinked Alginate Aerogels in the Sub-Picomolar Concentration Range

The removal of radionuclide/radioactivity from laboratory and environmental water samples under ambient conditions was investigated via batch-type experiments using polyurea-crosslinked calcium alginate (X-alginate) aerogels. Water samples were contaminated with traces of U-232 and Am-241. The removal efficiency of the material depends strongly on the solution pH; it is above 80% for both radionuclides in acidic solutions (pH 4), while it decreases at about 40% for Am-241 and 25% for U-232 in alkaline solutions (pH 9). This is directly associated with the presence of the radionuclide species in each case; the cationic species UO22+ and Am3+ prevail at pH 4, and the anionic species UO2(CO3)34– and Am(CO3)2− prevail at pH 9. Adsorption on X-alginate aerogels is realized by coordination of cationic species on carboxylate groups (replacing Ca2+) or other functional groups, i.e., –NH and/or –OH. In environmental water samples, i.e., ground water, wastewater and seawater, which are alkaline (pH around 8), the removal efficiency for Am-241 is significantly higher (45–60%) compared to that for U-232 (25–30%). The distribution coefficients (Kd) obtained for the sorption of Am-241 and U-232 by X-alginate aerogels are around 105 L/kg, even in environmental water samples, indicating a strong sorption affinity of the aerogel material for the radionuclides. The latter, along with their stability in aqueous environments, make X-alginate aerogels attractive candidates for the treatment of radioactive contaminated waters. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on the removal of americium from waters using aerogels and the first investigation of adsorption efficiency of an aerogel material at the sub-picomolar concentration range.

Cs sorption of Mn-Fe based Prussian blue analogs with periodic precipitation banding in agarose gel

We report the understanding of Cs sorption/desorption properties of Mn-Fe based Prussian blue analogs (Mn-Fe PBA) and Prussian blue (PB) in agarose gel via X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. After contacting a 2 mass% agarose gel containing 100 mmol dm^-3 [Fe(CN)₆]^3- ions (inner electrolyte gel) with a 1 mass% agarose gel containing 550 mmol dm^-3 Mn²⁺ or Fe²⁺ ions (outer electrolyte gel) in a plastic straw for 11 days, the clipped 10 mm-long gel columns of uniformly formed precipitates (named "Mn-Fe PBA gel" and "PB gel") were used to investigate their Cs sorption/desorption properties. The Mn-Fe PBA gel showed several interesting features that were not observed in the PB gel. The Cs sorption capacity of the Mn-Fe PBA gel increased over time, and after ∼1200 h reached a value comparable to the most optimal values previously reported. During Cs sorption, Mn²⁺ ions were constantly released from the Mn-Fe PBA gel, and several periodic precipitation bands were generated. The positions of the periodic bands agreed with those of the peak distributions of Cs, Mn, and Fe, suggesting that the concentration fluctuation of Mn^II-Fe^III PBA in the gel resulted in the periodic band formation. In these bands, large crystallites (>10 μm) were dominant, suggesting the contribution of Ostwald ripening. During Cs desorption, while Mn²⁺ ions were released from the Mn-Fe PBA gel, the release of Cs⁺ ions was considerably suppressed (∼1/3 for the PB gel). Based on these results, a model for Cs sorption by the Mn-Fe PBA gel was proposed, and its potential applications were discussed.

Mechanochemically Synthesized Prussian Blue for Efficient Removal of Cesium Ions from Aqueous Solutions

The adsorptive removal of radioactive cesium [Cs(I)] is important for ensuring a clean aquatic environment. In this work, the adsorption of Cs(I) was carried out using Prussian blue (PB) prepared by mechanochemical synthesis. X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy results indicated that PB had been successfully synthesized by mechanochemical synthesis. Thermogravimetric analysis, contact angle analysis, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, elemental analysis, and electrophoretic light scattering spectrophotometry confirmed that several defects were formed, explaining the principal mechanism for the efficient adsorption over PB prepared by mechanochemical synthesis. The superior adsorption properties toward Cs(I) make PB prepared by mechanochemical synthesis an attractive candidate material for the efficient, economical, and eco-friendly processes for purifying radioactive wastewater.

Skin Sensitization Potential and Cellular ROS-Induced Cytotoxicity of Silica Nanoparticles

Nowadays, various industries using nanomaterials are growing rapidly, and in particular, as the commercialization and use of nanomaterials increase in the cosmetic field, the possibility of exposure of nanomaterials to the skin of product producers and consumers is increasing. Due to the unique properties of nanomaterials with a very small size, they can act as hapten and induce immune responses and skin sensitization, so accurate identification of toxicity is required. Therefore, we selected silica nanomaterials used in various fields such as cosmetics and biomaterials and evaluated the skin sensitization potential step-by-step according to in-vitro and in-vivo alternative test methods. KeratinoSens^TM cells of modified keratinocyte and THP-1 cells mimicking dendritic-cells were treated with silica nanoparticles, and their potential for skin sensitization and cytotoxicity were evaluated, respectively. We also confirmed the sensitizing ability of silica nanoparticles in the auricle-lymph nodes of BALB/C mice by in-vivo analysis. As a result, silica nanoparticles showed high protein binding and reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediated cytotoxicity, but no significant observation of skin sensitization indicators was observed. Although more studies are needed to elucidate the mechanism of skin sensitization by nanomaterials, the results of this study showed that silica nanoparticles did not induce skin sensitization.

Mechanically Strong, Liquid-Resistant Photothermal Bioplastic Constructed from Cellulose and Metal-Organic Framework for Light-Driven Mechanical Motion

The development of photothermal materials with a high light-to-heat conversion capability is essential for the utilization of clean solar energy. In this work, we demonstrate the use of a novel and sustainable concept involving cellulose liquefaction, rapid gelation, in situ synthesis and hot-press drying to convert cellulose and metal-organic framework (Prussian blue) into a stable photothermal bioplastic that can harvest sunlight and convert it into mechanical motion. As expected, the obtained Prussian blue@cellulose bioplastic (PCBP) can effectively absorb sunlight and the surface can be heated up to 70.3 °C under one sun irradiation (100 mW cm-2). As a demonstration of the practicality of PCBP, it was successfully used to drive a Stirling engine motion. Meanwhile, hot-pressing promotes the densification of the structure of PCBP and, therefore, improves the resistance to the penetration of water/non-aqueous liquids. Moreover, PCBP shows good mechanical properties and thermal stability. Given the excellent photothermal performance and environmentally friendly features of photothermal conversion bioplastic, we envisage this sustainable plastic film could play important roles toward diversified applications: a photothermal layer for thermoelectric generator, agricultural films for soil mulching and photothermal antibacterial activity, among others.

Prussian Blue: A Safe Pigment with Zeolitic-Like Activity

Prussian blue (PB) and PB analogues (PBA) are coordination network materials that present important similarities with zeolites concretely with their ability of adsorbing cations. Depending on the conditions of preparation, which is cheap and easy, PB can be classified into soluble PB and insoluble PB. The zeolitic-like properties are mainly inherent to insoluble form. This form presents some defects in its cubic lattice resulting in an open structure. The vacancies make PB capable of taking up and trapping ions or molecules into the lattice. Important adsorption characteristics of PB are a high specific area (370 m2 g-1 determined according the BET theory), uniform pore diameter, and large pore width. PB has numerous applications in many scientific and technological fields. PB are assembled into nanoparticles that, due to their biosafety and biocompatibility, can be used for biomedical applications. PB and PBA have been shown to be excellent sorbents of radioactive cesium and radioactive and nonradioactive thallium. Other cations adsorbed by PB are K+, Na+, NH4+, and some divalent cations. PB can also capture gaseous molecules, hydrocarbons, and even luminescent molecules such as 2-aminoanthracene. As the main adsorptive application of PB is the selective removal of cations from the environment, it is important to easily separate the sorbent of the purified solution. To facilitate this, PB is encapsulated into a polymer or coats a support, sometimes magnetic particles. Finally, is remarkable to point out that PB can be recycled and the adsorbed material can be recovered.

A Review on Revolutionary Natural Biopolymer-Based Aerogels for Antibacterial Delivery

A biopolymer-based aerogel has been developed to become one of the most potentially utilized materials in different biomedical applications. The biopolymer-based aerogel has unique physical, chemical, and mechanical properties and these properties are used in tissue engineering, biosensing, diagnostic, medical implant and drug delivery applications. Biocompatible and non-toxic biopolymers such as chitosan, cellulose and alginates have been used to deliver antibiotics, plants extract, essential oils and metallic nanoparticles. Antibacterial aerogels have been used in superficial and chronic wound healing as dressing sheets. This review critically analyses the utilization of biopolymer-based aerogels in antibacterial delivery. The analysis shows the relationship between their properties and their applications in the wound healing process. Furthermore, highlights of the potentials, challenges and proposition of the application of biopolymer-based aerogels is explored.

Highly selective enrichment of radioactive cesium from solution by using zinc hexacyanoferrate(III)-functionalized magnetic bentonite

Realizing highly effective and selective enrichment of radioactive Cs(I) in complex environmental systems and exploring the microscale adsorption mechanism of Cs(I) on adsorbing material is the key point for developing highly efficient materials for Cs(I) adsorption. In addition, the low cytotoxicity of materials is essential for practical applications and environmental protection. In this study, the controlled assembly of bentonite carrier with a highly selective substance of Cs(I) is prepared by in-situ synthesis method in order to construct a low-toxic functional clay material with high adsorption capacity and selectivity of Cs(I) in complex environmental systems. The efficiency of the zinc hexacyanoferrate(III)-grafted magnetic bentonite (denoted as ZHF/MB) composite was evaluated in adsorption isotherm studies, kinetics analyses, and selectivity tests by using the batch technique. The toxicity of the ZHF/MB composite was evaluated through in vitro cytotoxicity assays using human hepatic cells (HepG2 cells). The results revealed that the ZHF/MB composite had not only a higher adsorption capacity (1.638 mmol/g, 60 °C) for Cs⁺ ions than a number of other natural and manmade materials but also no cytotoxicity in human cells. In addition, the ZHF/MB composite showed excellent selectivity for Cs⁺ with a removal efficiency of over 90% from solution (m/V = 0.4 g/L, [Mⁿ⁺]_initial = 10 mg/L, Mⁿ⁺= Cs⁺, Ni²⁺,Sr²⁺, Co²⁺). The promising safe toxicology profile, remarkable Cs⁺ adsorption efficiency, and excellent selectivity of the ZHF/MB composite demonstrate its great potential for using as a decorporation agent for radioactive cesium remediation. The implementation of this research will provide new adsorption materials and method for radioactive Cs(I) waste management.

Sustainable Graphene Aerogel as an Ecofriendly Cell Growth Promoter and Highly Efficient Adsorbent for Histamine from Red Wine

The utilization of a sustainable and lightweight graphene aerogel (GA), synthesized from crude biomass, as a cell growth promoter and an adsorbent for the efficient removal of histamine (HIS), a food toxicant, from the real food matrix has been explored. Due to the self-supported three-dimensional nanoporous honeycomb-like structure of the graphene framework and the high surface area, the synthesized GA achieved an 80.69 ± 0.89% removal of HIS from red wine (spiked with HIS) after just 60 min under both acidic (3.0) and neutral (7.4) pH conditions. Furthermore, simple cleaning with 50% ethanol and deionized water, without any change in weight, allowed them to be reused more than 10 times with a still significant HIS removal ability (more than 71.6 ± 2.57%). In vitro cell culture experiments demonstrated that the synthesized GA had nontoxic effects on the cell viability (up to 80.35%) even at higher concentrations (10 mg mL^-1), as determined via the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide and lactate dehydrogenase assays using human lung bronchial epithelial cells. Interestingly, GA promotes the wound-healing ability on the scratched epithelial cell surfaces via enhancing the cell migrations as also validated by the western blot analysis via expression levels of epithelial β-catenin and E-cadherin proteins. The distinct structural advantage along with the nontoxicity of the green synthesized GA will not only facilitate the economic feasibility of the synthesized GA for its practical real-life applications in liquid toxin and pollutant removal from the food and environment but also broaden its applicability as a promising biomaterial of choice for biomedical applications.
