Friedel-Crafts Reaction of N,N-Dimethylaniline with Alkenes Catalyzed by Cyclic Diaminocarbene-Gold(I) Complex

Electrochemical-induced solvent-tuned selective C(sp3)-H bond activation towards the synthesis of C3-functionalized chromone derivatives

An unprecedented solvent-tuned electrochemical method for selective C(sp3)-H bond activation towards the synthesis of C3 functionalized chromone derivatives has been developed. This electrosynthesis protocol provides an efficient and green way to access various C3-functionalized chromones by avoiding traditionally employed transition metals and high temperatures. The swappable chemoselectivity was controlled mainly by altering the solvent and the current. A plausible reaction mechanism has been proposed with the help of radical capture and cyclic voltammetry experiments.

Surface-catalyzed hydrolysis by pyrogenic carbonaceous matter and model polymers: An experimental and computational study on functional group and pore characteristics

We employed a polymer network to understand what properties of pyrogenic carbonaceous matter (PCM; e.g., activated carbon) confer its reactivity, which we hereinafter referred to as PCM-like polymers (PLP). This approach allows us to delineate the role of functional groups and micropore characteristics using 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) as a model contaminant. Six PLP were synthesized via cross-coupling chemistry with specific functionality (-OH, -NH2, -N(CH3)2, or -N ( CH 3 ) 3 + ) and pore characteristics (mesopore, micropore). Results suggest that PCM functionality catalyzed the reaction by: (1) serving as a weak base (-OH, -NH2) to attack TNT, or (2) accumulating OH- near PCM surfaces (-N ( CH 3 ) 3 + ). Additionally, TNT hydrolysis rates, pH and co-ion effects, and products were monitored. Microporous PLP accelerated TNT decay compared to its mesoporous counterpart, as further supported by molecular dynamics modeling results. We also demonstrated that quaternary ammonium-modified activated carbon enhanced TNT hydrolysis. These findings have broad implications for pollutant abatement and catalyst design.

Aerobic oxidation of aldehydes to acids in water with cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene copper under mild conditions

In this work, cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene copper ((CAAC)Cu) catalyzed aerobic oxidation of aldehydes in water at room temperature has been reported. Good to excellent yields were obtained using different substrates. A possible reaction mechanism was proposed, in which (CAAC)Cu dioxygen activates the C-H bond of aldehyde with a low barrier of 10.6 kcal mol^-1.

B(C6 F5 )3 -Catalyzed Tandem Friedel-Crafts and C-H/C-O Coupling Reactions of Dialkylanilines

Tandem Friedel-Crafts (FC) and C-H/C-O coupling reactions catalyzed by tris(pentafluorophenyl) borane (B(C₆ F₅ )₃ ) were achieved without using any other additive in the absence of solvent. This process can be used for the reactions between a series of dialkylanilines and vinyl ethers with good isolated yields of bis(4-dialkylaminophenyl) compounds. Based on combined theoretical and experimental studies, the possible reaction mechanism was proposed. B(C₆ F₅ )₃ can activate the C=C and C-O bond for FC and C-H/C-O coupling reactions respectively. The FC reaction is slow, which is followed by a fast C-H/C-O coupling.

Experimental and theoretical study on the cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene-copper catalyzed Friedel-Crafts reaction of N,N-dialkylanilines with styrenes

The Friedel-Crafts reaction of alkalinous substrates is challenging because of the coordination between amines and traditional acid catalysts. Based on theoretical research, we designed a catalytic process for the Friedel-Crafts reactions of N,N-dialkylanilines in the presence of CAAC-CuCl [CAAC = cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene] and KB(C₆F₅)₄. Experimental results show that the catalytic system is suitable for a series of N,N-dialkylanilines and styrenes with good to excellent yields of para-selectivity products. The results are comparable to those obtained in carbene-gold catalyzed processes.

Mechanistic Insight Into the AuCN Catalyzed Annulation Reaction of Salicylaldehyde and Aryl Acetylene: Cyanide Ion Promoted Umpolung Hydroacylation/Intramolecular Oxa-Michael Addition Mechanism

The detailed mechanism of the AuCN-catalyzed annulation of salicylaldehyde (SA) and phenyl acetylene leading to isoflavanone-type complexes has been investigated via density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Reaction pathways and possible stationary points are obtained with the combined molecular dynamics and coordinate driving (MD/CD) method. Our calculations reveal that the cyanide ion promoted umpolung hydroacylation/intramolecular oxa-Michael addition mechanism is more favorable than the Au(I)/Au(III) redox mechanism proposed previously. In the umpolung mechanism, the hydroxyl of SA is found to strongly stabilize the cyanide ion involved intermediates and transition states via hydrogen bond interactions, while the Au(I) ion always acts as a counter cation. The overall reaction is exergonic by 41.8 kcal/mol. The hydroacylation of phenyl acetylene is the rate-determining step and responsible for the regioselectivity with a free energy barrier of 27.3 kcal/mol. These calculated results are in qualitative accord with the experimental findings.
