Tunable polytetrafluoroethylene electret films with extraordinary charge stability synthesized by initiated chemical vapor deposition for organic electronics applications

Gross morphology and adhesion-associated physical properties of Drosophila larval salivary gland glue secretion

One of the major functions of the larval salivary glands (SGs) of many Drosophila species is to produce a massive secretion during puparium formation. This so-called proteinaceous glue is exocytosed into the centrally located lumen, and subsequently expectorated, serving as an adhesive to attach the puparial case to a solid substrate during metamorphosis. Although this was first described almost 70 years ago, a detailed description of the morphology and mechanical properties of the glue is largely missing. Its main known physical property is that it is released as a watery liquid that quickly hardens into a solid cement. Here, we provide a detailed morphological and topological analysis of the solidified glue. We demonstrated that it forms a distinctive enamel-like plaque that is composed of a central fingerprint surrounded by a cascade of laterally layered terraces. The solidifying glue rapidly produces crystals of KCl on these alluvial-like terraces. Since the properties of the glue affect the adhesion of the puparium to its substrate, and so can influence the success of metamorphosis, we evaluated over 80 different materials for their ability to adhere to the glue to determine which properties favor strong adhesion. We found that the alkaline Sgs-glue adheres strongly to wettable and positively charged surfaces but not to neutral or negatively charged and hydrophobic surfaces. Puparia formed on unfavored materials can be removed easily without leaving fingerprints or cascading terraces. For successful adhesion of the Sgs-glue, the material surface must display a specific type of triboelectric charge. Interestingly, the expectorated glue can move upwards against gravity on the surface of freshly formed puparia via specific, unique and novel anatomical structures present in the puparial's lateral abdominal segments that we have named bidentia.

Prevention and characterization of thin film defects induced by contaminant aggregates in initiated chemical vapor deposition

As initiated Chemical Vapor Deposition (iCVD) finds increasing application in precision industries like electronics and optics, defect prevention will become critical. While studies of non-ideal morphology exist in the iCVD literature, no studies investigate the role of defects. To address this knowledge gap, we show that the buildup of short-chain polymers or oligomers during normal operation of an iCVD reactor can lead to defects that compromise film integrity. We used atomic force microscopy to show that oligomer aggregates selectively prevented film growth, causing these hole-like defects. X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy demonstrated the crystallinity of the aggregates, pointing to a flat-on lamellar or mono-lamellar structure. To understand the origin of the aggregates, spectroscopic ellipsometry showed that samples exposed to the reactor consistently accrued low-volatility contaminants. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed material derived from polymerization in the contamination, while scanning electron microscopy showed the presence of defect-causing aggregates. We directly linked oligomeric/polymeric contamination with defect formation by showing an increased defect rate when a contaminant polymer was heated alongside the sample. Most importantly, we showed that starting a deposition at a high sample temperature (e.g., 50 °C) before reducing it to the desired setpoint (e.g., 9 °C) unilaterally prevented defects, providing a simple method to prevent defects with minimal impact on operations.

Two-in-One Sensor Based on PV4D4-Coated TiO2 Films for Food Spoilage Detection and as a Breath Marker for Several Diseases

Certain molecules act as biomarkers in exhaled breath or outgassing vapors of biological systems. Specifically, ammonia (NH₃) can serve as a tracer for food spoilage as well as a breath marker for several diseases. H₂ gas in the exhaled breath can be associated with gastric disorders. This initiates an increasing demand for small and reliable devices with high sensitivity capable of detecting such molecules. Metal-oxide gas sensors present an excellent tradeoff, e.g., compared to expensive and large gas chromatographs for this purpose. However, selective identification of NH₃ at the parts-per-million (ppm) level as well as detection of multiple gases in gas mixtures with one sensor remain a challenge. In this work, a new two-in-one sensor for NH₃ and H₂ detection is presented, which provides stable, precise, and very selective properties for the tracking of these vapors at low concentrations. The fabricated 15 nm TiO₂ gas sensors, which were annealed at 610 °C, formed two crystal phases, namely anatase and rutile, and afterwards were covered with a thin 25 nm PV4D4 polymer nanolayer via initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) and showed precise NH₃ response at room temperature and exclusive H₂ detection at elevated operating temperatures. This enables new possibilities in application fields such as biomedical diagnosis, biosensors, and the development of non-invasive technology.

Tuning the Selectivity of Metal Oxide Gas Sensors with Vapor Phase Deposited Ultrathin Polymer Thin Films

Metal oxide gas sensors are of great interest for applications ranging from lambda sensors to early hazard detection in explosive media and leakage detection due to their superior properties with regard to sensitivity and lifetime, as well as their low cost and portability. However, the influence of ambient gases on the gas response, energy consumption and selectivity still needs to be improved and they are thus the subject of intensive research. In this work, a simple approach is presented to modify and increase the selectivity of gas sensing structures with an ultrathin polymer thin film. The different gas sensing surfaces, CuO, Al₂O₃/CuO and TiO₂ are coated with a conformal < 30 nm Poly(1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-tetravinyl cyclotetrasiloxane) (PV4D4) thin film via solvent-free initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD). The obtained structures demonstrate a change in selectivity from ethanol vapor to 2-propanol vapor and an increase in selectivity compared to other vapors of volatile organic compounds. In the case of TiO₂ structures coated with a PV4D4 thin film, the increase in selectivity to 2-propanol vapors is observed even at relatively low operating temperatures, starting from >200 °C. The present study demonstrates possibilities for improving the properties of metal oxide gas sensors, which is very important in applications in fields such as medicine, security and food safety.

A Stretchable Expanded Polytetrafluorethylene-Silicone Elastomer Composite Electret for Wearable Sensor

Soaring developments in wearable electronics raise an urgent need for stretchable electrets. However, achieving soft electrets simultaneously possessing excellent stretchability, longevity, and high charge density is still challenging. Herein, a facile approach is proposed to prepare an all-polymer hybrid composite electret based on the coupling of elastomer and ePTFE membrane. The composite electrets are fabricated via a facile casting and thermal curing process. The obtained soft composite electrets exhibit constantly high surface potential (-0.38 kV) over a long time (30 days), large strain (450%), low hysteresis, and excellent durability (15,000 cycles). To demonstrate the applications, the stretchable electret is utilized to assemble a self-powered flexible sensor based on the electrostatic induction effect for the monitoring of human activities. Additionally, output signals in the pressure mode almost two orders of magnitude larger than those in the strain mode are observed and the sensing mechanism in each mode is investigated.

Stretchable π-conjugated polymer electrets for mechanoelectric generators

Electrets are materials that retain quasi-permanent electric charges and are attracting attention as key components of batteryless micropower supplies. A chemical structure that facilitates ionization and that can stabilize these charges, such as a π-conjugated system, is expected to increase the charge density compared with that of conventional insulating polymers. Here, we report a mechanoelectric generator (MEG) (vibrational energy harvester) that uses alkylated π-conjugated polymers (Alk-CPs), which can be monopolarized either into positive or negative mode electrets. With the attachment of insulating, bulky, yet flexible alkyl side chains to the π-conjugated backbone, the poled Alk-CPs showed long charge lifetime suitable for MEGs. The elastic modulus of the electret was adjusted to approximately match that of the stretchable polyurethane substrate by blending two miscible Alk-CPs with different elastic moduli, producing a laminated film that could be stretched up to 300%. The MEG presented showed conformability when applied to a deformable object.

Shape Memory Alloys and Polymers for MEMS/NEMS Applications: Review on Recent Findings and Challenges in Design, Preparation, and Characterization

Rapid progress in material science and nanotechnology has led to the development of the shape memory alloys (SMA) and the shape memory polymers (SMP) based functional multilayered structures that, due to their capability to achieve the properties not feasible by most natural materials, have attracted a significant attention from the scientific community. These shape memory materials can sustain large deformations, which can be recovered once the appropriate value of an external stimulus is applied. Moreover, the SMAs and SMPs can be reprogrammed to meet several desired functional properties. As a result, SMAs and SMPs multilayered structures benefit from the unprecedented physical and material properties such as the shape memory effect, superelasticity, large displacement actuation, changeable mechanical properties, and the high energy density. They hold promises in the design of advanced functional micro- and nano-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS). In this review, we discuss the recent understanding and progress in the fields of the SMAs and SMPs. Particular attention will be given to the existing challenges, critical issues, limitations, and achievements in the preparation and characterization of the SMPs and NiTi-based SMAs thin films, and their heterostructures for MEMS/NEMS applications including both experimental and computational approaches. Examples of the recent MEMS/NEMS devices utilizing the unique properties of SMAs and SMPs such as micropumps, microsensors or tunable metamaterial resonators are highlighted. In addition, we also introduce the prospective future research directions in the fields of SMAs and SMPs for the nanotechnology applications.

Electroactive material-based biosensors for detection and drug delivery

Electroactive materials are employed at the interface of biology and electronics due to their advantageous intrinsic properties as soft organic electronics. We examine the most recent literature of electroactive material-based biosensors and their emerging role as theranostic devices for the delivery of therapeutic agents. We consider electroactive materials through the lens of smart drug delivery systems as materials that enable the release of therapeutic cargo in response to specific physiological and external stimuli and discuss the way these mechanisms are integrated into medical devices with examples of the latest advances. Studies that harness features unique to conductive polymers are emphasized; lastly, we highlight new perspectives and future research direction for this emerging technology and the challenges that remain to overcome.

Molecular Insight into Real-Time Reaction Kinetics of Free Radical Polymerization from the Vapor Phase by In-Situ Mass Spectrometry

The combination of organic chemistry and chemical vapor deposition enables a unique way to deposit conformal, high quality polymer thin films from the vapor phase. Particularly initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) has recently shown its great potential in many different application fields. With the ever-increasing demands on the process, the need for additional process refinement is also growing. In this study the enhancement of the iCVD process by in-situ mass spectrometry is presented. The approach enables insight into real-time reaction kinetics during the deposition process as well as identification of reaction pathways. Furthermore, the composition of the gas phase can be precisely controlled and spontaneously adjusted if necessary. Particularly the deposition of thin films with thicknesses in the low nanometer range and the deposition of copolymers can benefit from this approach. The presented approach enables enhanced process control as well as the ability to perform extensive kinetic studies.

High-k Polymer Nanocomposite Materials for Technological Applications

Understanding the properties of small molecules or monomers is decidedly important. The efforts of synthetic chemists and material engineers must be appreciated because of their knowledge of how utilize the properties of synthetic fragments in constructing long-chain macromolecules. Scientists active in this area of macromolecular science have shared their knowledge of catalysts, monomers and a variety of designed nanoparticles in synthetic techniques that create all sorts of nanocomposite polymer stuffs. Such materials are now an integral part of the contemporary world. Polymer nanocomposites with high dielectric constant (high-k) properties are widely applicable in the technological sectors including gate dielectrics, actuators, infrared detectors, tunable capacitors, electro optic devices, organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), and sensors. In this short colloquy, we provided an overview of a few remarkable high-k polymer nanocomposites of material science interest from recent decades.

Vapor-Deposited Biointerfaces and Bacteria: An Evolving Conversation

At the biointerface where materials and microorganisms meet, the organic and synthetic worlds merge into a new science that directs the design and safe use of synthetic materials for biological applications. Vapor deposition techniques provide an effective way to control the material properties of these biointerfaces with molecular-level precision that is important for biomaterials to interface with bacteria. In recent years, biointerface research that focuses on bacteria-surface interactions has been primarily driven by the goals of killing bacteria (antimicrobial) and fouling prevention (antifouling). Nevertheless, vapor deposition techniques have the potential to create biointerfaces with features that can manipulate and dictate the behavior of bacteria rather than killing or deterring them. In this review, we focus on recent advances in antimicrobial and antifouling biointerfaces produced through vapor deposition and provide an outlook on opportunities to capitalize on the features of these techniques to find unexplored connections between surface features and microbial behavior.
