Gold-decorated magnetic nanoparticles design for hyperthermia applications and as a potential platform for their surface-functionalization

Lateral flow assays: Progress and evolution of recent trends in point-of-care applications

Paper based point-of-care (PoC) detection platforms applying lateral flow assays (LFAs) have gained paramount approval in the diagnostic domain as well as in environmental applications owing to their ease of utility, low cost, and rapid signal readout. It has centralized the aspect of self-evaluation exhibiting promising potential in the last global pandemic era of Covid-19 implementing rapid management of public health in remote areas. In this perspective, the present review is focused towards landscaping the current framework of LFAs along with integration of components and characteristics for improving the assay by pushing the detection limits. The review highlights the synergistic aspects of assay designing, sample enrichment strategies, novel nanomaterials-based signal transducers, and high-end analytical techniques that contribute significantly towards sensitivity and specificity enhancement. Various recent studies are discussed supporting the innovations in LFA systems that focus upon the accuracy and reliability of rapid PoC testing. The review also provides a comprehensive overview of all the possible difficulties in commercialization of LFAs subjecting its applicability to pathogen surveillance, water and food testing, disease diagnostics, as well as to agriculture and environmental issues.

Interacting Trimagnetic Ensembles for Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Transverse Relaxivity

An ensemble of nanosystems can be considered to improve magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) transverse relaxivity. Herein, an interacting superparamagnetic competing structure of an isotropic-anisotropic trimagnetic hybrid nanosystem, γ-Fe2O3@δ-MnO2@NiFe2O4, is considered for MRI relaxivity exploration. The interacting superparamagnetic system reveals fascinating dynamic magnetic behavior, where flower-shaped two-dimensional flakes are decorated over nanoparticles. The hybrid nanosystem exhibits modulated shape anisotropy with spin blocking and energy barrier broadening, which help in achieving faster MR transverse relaxivity. The hierarchical architecture ensemble of the trimagnetic landscape shows effective MR transverse relaxivity with a transverse (r2)/longitudinal (r1) relaxivity of 61.5 and potential cell viability. The competing trimagnetic system with regulated activation energy is found to be the underlying reason for such signal enhancement in MRI contrast efficiency. Hence, this study displays a novel pathway correlating MR transverse relaxivity with dynamic magnetic behavior and competing landscape of hierarchical trimagnetic ensembles.

Magnetic hyperthermia in cancer therapy, mechanisms, and recent advances: A review

Hyperthermia therapy refers to the elevating of a region in the body for therapeutic purposes. Different techniques have been applied for hyperthermia therapy including laser, microwave, radiofrequency, ultrasonic, and magnetic nanoparticles and the latter have received great attention in recent years. Magnetic hyperthermia in cancer therapy aims to increase the temperature of the body tissue by locally delivering heat from the magnetic nanoparticles to cancer cells with the aid of an external alternating magnetic field to kill the cancerous cells or prevent their further growth. This review introduces magnetic hyperthermia with magnetic nanoparticles. It includes the mechanism of the operation and magnetism behind the magnetic hyperthermia phenomenon. Different synthesis methods and surface modification to enhance the biocompatibility, water solubility, and stability of the nanoparticles in physiological environments have been discussed. Recent research on versatile types of magnetic nanoparticles with their ability to increase the local temperature has been addressed.

Study of biopolymer encapsulated Eu doped Fe3O4 nanoparticles for magnetic hyperthermia application

An exciting prospect in the field of magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) has been the integration of noble rare earth elements (Eu) with biopolymers (chitosan/dextran) that have optimum structures to tune specific effects on magnetic nanoparticles (NPs). However, the heating efficiency of MNPs is primarily influenced by their magnetization, size distribution, magnetic anisotropy, dipolar interaction, amplitude, and frequency of the applied field, the MNPs with high heating efficiency are still challenging. In this study, a comprehensive experimental analysis has been conducted on single-domain magnetic nanoparticles (SDMNPs) for evaluating effective anisotropy, assessing the impact of particle-intrinsic factors and experimental conditions on self-heating efficiency in both noninteracting and interacting systems, with a particular focus on the dipolar interaction effect. The study successfully reconciles conflicting findings on the interaction effects in the agglomeration and less agglomerated arrangements for MFH applications. The results suggest that effective control of dipolar interactions can be achieved by encapsulating Chitosan/Dextran in the synthesized MNPs. The lower dipolar interactions successfully tune the self-heating efficiency and hold promise as potential candidates for MFH applications.

A comprehensive scrutiny to controlled dipolar interactions to intensify the self-heating efficiency of biopolymer encapsulated Tb doped magnetite nanoparticles

An exciting prospect in the field of magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) has been the integration of noble rare earth elements with biopolymers (chitosan/dextran) that have optimum structures to tune specific effects on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). Remarkably, it has been demonstrated that dipole-dipole interactions have a significant influence on nanoparticle dynamics. In this article, we present an exhaustive scrutiny of dipolar interactions and how this affects the efficiency of MFH applications. In particular, we prepare chitosan and dextran-coated Tb-doped MNPs and study whether it is possible to increase the heat released by controlling the dipole-dipole interactions. It has been indicated that even moderate control of agglomeration may substantially impact the structure and magnetization dynamics of the system. Besides estimating the specific loss power value, our findings provide a deep insight into the relaxation mechanisms and bring to light how to tune the self-heating efficacy towards magnetic hyperthermia.

Novel Characterization Techniques for Multifunctional Plasmonic-Magnetic Nanoparticles in Biomedical Applications

In the rapidly emerging field of biomedical applications, multifunctional nanoparticles, especially those containing magnetic and plasmonic components, have gained significant attention due to their combined properties. These hybrid systems, often composed of iron oxide and gold, provide both magnetic and optical functionalities and offer promising avenues for applications in multimodal bioimaging, hyperthermal therapies, and magnetically driven selective delivery. This paper focuses on the implementation of advanced characterization methods, comparing statistical analyses of individual multifunctional particle properties with macroscopic properties as a way of fine-tuning synthetic methodologies for their fabrication methods. Special emphasis is placed on the size-dependent properties, biocompatibility, and challenges that can arise from this versatile nanometric system. In order to ensure the quality and applicability of these particles, various novel methods for characterizing the magnetic gold particles, including the analysis of their morphology, optical response, and magnetic response, are also discussed, with the overall goal of optimizing the fabrication of this complex system and thus enhancing its potential as a preferred diagnostic agent.

Enhanced Multimodal Effect of Chemotherapy, Hyperthermia and Magneto-Mechanic Actuation of Silver-Coated Magnetite on Cancer Cells

Currently, various methods based on magnetic nanoparticles are being considered for the treatment of cancer. Among these, magnetic hyperthermia and magneto-mechanical actuation are the most tested physical methods that have shown promising results when applied both separately and in combination. However, combining them with specific drugs can further improve antitumor efficiency. In this study, we performed a systematic analysis to determine the best combination of hyperthermia, magneto-mechanical actuation of silver-coated magnetite nanoparticles (MNP@Ag) and chemotherapy (mitoxantrone) capable of destroying tumor cells in vitro while maintaining normal cells in their state of increased viability. The results showed that of the nine treatment configurations, the only one that satisfied the safety condition for normal cells (fibroblasts) and the highly cytotoxic condition for tumor cells (HeLa) was the combination of all three triggers. This combination led to the decrease in HeLa viability to about 32%, while the decrease in fibroblast viability reached 80%. It was observed that the cytotoxic effect was not a sum of the separate effects of each trigger involved, but the result of a nonlinear conjugation of the triggers in a dynamic regime imposed by the magneto-mechanical actuation of the nanoparticles. We conclude that by using such a treatment approach, the need for chemotherapeutic drugs can be substantially reduced while maintaining their therapeutic performance.

XFCT-MRI hybrid multimodal contrast agents for complementary imaging

Multimodal contrast agents in biomedical imaging enable the collection of more comprehensive diagnostic information. In the present work, we design hybrid ruthenium-decorated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) as the contrast agents for both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and X-ray fluorescence computed tomography (XFCT). The NPs are synthesized via a one-pot polyol hot injection route, in diethylene glycol. In vivo preclinical studies demonstrate the possibility of correlative bioimaging with these contrast agents. The complementarity allows accurate localization, provided by the high contrast of the soft tissues in MRI combined with the elemental selectivity of XFCT, leading to NP detection with high specificity and resolution. We envision that this multimodal imaging could find future applications for early tumor diagnosis, improved long-term treatment monitoring, and enhanced radiotherapy planning.

Recent Advances on Surface-Modified GBM Targeted Nanoparticles: Targeting Strategies and Surface Characterization

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common malignant brain tumor, associated with low long-term survival. Nanoparticles (NPs) developed against GBM are a promising strategy to improve current therapies, by enhancing the brain delivery of active molecules and reducing off-target effects. In particular, NPs hold high potential for the targeted delivery of chemotherapeutics both across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and specifically to GBM cell receptors, pathways, or the tumor microenvironment (TME). In this review, the most recent strategies to deliver drugs to GBM are explored. The main focus is on how surface functionalizations are essential for BBB crossing and for tumor specific targeting. We give a critical analysis of the various ligand-based approaches that have been used to target specific cancer cell receptors and the TME, or to interfere with the signaling pathways of GBM. Despite the increasing application of NPs in the clinical setting, new methods for ligand and surface characterization are needed to optimize the synthesis, as well as to predict their in vivo behavior. An expert opinion is given on the future of this research and what is still missing to create and characterize a functional NP system for improved GBM targeting.

Quantum magnetic phenomena in engineered heterointerface of low-dimensional van der Waals and non-van der Waals materials

Investigating magnetic phenomena at the microscopic level has emerged as an indispensable research domain in the field of low-dimensional magnetic materials. Understanding quantum phenomena that mediate the magnetic interactions in dimensionally confined materials is crucial from the perspective of designing cheaper, compact, and energy-efficient next-generation spintronic devices. The infrequent occurrence of intrinsic long-range magnetic order in dimensionally confined materials hinders the advancement of this domain. Hence, introducing and controlling the ferromagnetic character in two-dimensional materials is important for further prospective studies. The interface in a heterostructure significantly contributes to modulating its collective magnetic properties. Quantum phenomena occurring at the interface of engineered heterostructures can enhance or suppress magnetization of the system and introduce magnetic character to a native non-magnetic system. Considering most 2D magnetic materials are used as stacks with other materials in nanoscale devices, the methods to control the magnetism in a heterostructure and understanding the corresponding mechanism are crucial for promising spintronic and other functional applications. This review highlights the effect of electric polarization of the adjacent layer, changed structural configuration at the vicinity of the interface, natural strain induced by lattice mismatch, and exchange interaction in the interfacial region in modulating the magnetism of heterostructures of van der Waals and non-van der Waals materials. Further, prospects of interface-engineered magnetism in spin-dependent device applications are also discussed.

Synthesis of Multifunctional Eu(III) Complex Doped Fe3O4/Au Nanocomposite for Dual Photo-Magnetic Hyperthermia and Fluorescence Bioimaging

In this paper, the luminescent complex Eu(3-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate)₃ was integrated with Fe₃O₄ and gold (Au) nanoparticles to form a multifunctional nanocomposite, Fe₃O₄/Au/Eu(TTA)₃ (FOASET NC), for dual magnetic-photothermal therapy and biomedical imaging. Upon functionalization with amine-NH₂, the FOASET NC exhibits a small size of 60-70 nm and strong, sharp emission at λ_max = 614 nm, enhanced by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Au nanoparticles that provided an effective label for HT29 colorectal cancer cells by fluorescence microscopy imaging. In addition, a hyperthermia temperature (42-46 °C) was completely achieved by using these FOASET NCs in an aqueous solution with three heating modes for (i) Magnetic therapy (MT), (ii) Photothermal therapy (PT), and (iii) Dual magnetic-photothermal therapy (MPT). The heating efficiency was improved in the dual magnetic-photothermal heating mode.

Combined Magnetic Hyperthermia and Photothermia with Polyelectrolyte/Gold-Coated Magnetic Nanorods

Magnetite nanorods (MNRs) are synthesized based on the use of hematite nanoparticles of the desired geometry and dimensions as templates. The nanorods are shown to be highly monodisperse, with a 5:1 axial ratio, and with a 275 nm long semiaxis. The MNRs are intended to be employed as magnetic hyperthermia and photothermia agents, and as drug vehicles. To achieve a better control of their photothermia response, the particles are coated with a layer of gold, after applying a branched polyethyleneimine (PEI, 2 kDa molecular weight) shell. Magnetic hyperthermia is performed by application of alternating magnetic fields with frequencies in the range 118-210 kHz and amplitudes up to 22 kA/m. Photothermia is carried out by subjecting the particles to a near-infrared (850 nm) laser, and three monochromatic lasers in the visible spectrum with wavelengths 480 nm, 505 nm, and 638 nm. Best results are obtained with the 505 nm laser, because of the proximity between this wavelength and that of the plasmon resonance. A so-called dual therapy is also tested, and the heating of the samples is found to be faster than with either method separately, so the strengths of the individual fields can be reduced. Due to toxicity concerns with PEI coatings, viability of human hepatoblastoma HepG2 cells was tested after contact with nanorod suspensions up to 500 µg/mL in concentration. It was found that the cell viability was indistinguishable from control systems, so the particles can be considered non-cytotoxic in vitro. Finally, the release of the antitumor drug doxorubicin is investigated for the first time in the presence of the two external fields, and of their combination, with a clear improvement in the rate of drug release in the latter case.

Multifunctional plasmonic-magnetic nanoparticles for bioimaging and hyperthermia

Multicompartment nanoparticles have raised great interest for different biomedical applications, thanks to the combined properties of different materials within a single entity. These hybrid systems have opened new avenues toward diagnosis and combination therapies, thus becoming preferred theranostic agents. When hybrid nanoparticles comprise magnetic and plasmonic components, both magnetic and optical properties can be achieved, which are potentially useful for multimodal bioimaging, hyperthermal therapies and magnetically driven selective delivery. Nanostructures comprising iron oxide and gold are usually selected for biomedical applications, as they display size-dependent properties, biocompatibility, and unique physical and chemical characteristics that can be tuned through highly precise synthetic protocols. We provide herein an overview of the most recent synthetic protocols to prepare magnetic-plasmonic nanostructures made of iron oxide and gold, to then highlight the progress made on multifunctional magnetic-plasmonic bioimaging and heating-based therapies. We discuss the advantages and limitations of the various systems in these directions.

Human ACE2 Peptide-Attached Plasmonic-Magnetic Heterostructure for Magnetic Separation, Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Identification, and Inhibition of Different Variants of SARS-CoV-2 Infections

The emergence of Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Omicron variants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for several million deaths up to now. Because of the huge amount of vaccine escape mutations in the spike (S) protein for different variants, the design of material for combating SARS-CoV-2 is very important for our society. Herein, we report on the design of a human angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) peptide-conjugated plasmonic-magnetic heterostructure, which has the capability for magnetic separation, identification via surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), and inhibition of different variant SARS-CoV-2 infections. In this work, plasmonic-magnetic heterostructures were developed using the initial synthesis of polyethylenimine (PEI)-coated Fe3O4-based magnetic nanoparticles, and then gold nanoparticles (GNPs) were grown onto the surface of the magnetic nanoparticles. Experimental binding data between ACE2-conjugated plasmonic-magnetic heterostructures and spike-receptor-binding domain (RBD) show that the Omicron variant has maximum binding ability, and it follows Alpha < Beta < Gamma < Delta < Omicron. Our finding shows that, due to the high magnetic moment (specific magnetization 40 emu/g), bioconjugated heterostructures are capable of effective magnetic separation of pseudotyped SARS-CoV-2 bearing the Delta variant spike from an infected artificial nasal mucus fluid sample using a simple bar magnet. Experimental data show that due to the formation of huge "hot spots" in the presence of SARS-CoV-2, Raman intensity for the 4-aminothiolphenol (4-ATP) Raman reporter was enhanced sharply, which has been used for the identification of separated virus. Theoretical calculations using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation indicate that, due to the "hot spots" formation, a six orders of magnitude Raman enhancement can be observed. A concentration-dependent inhibition efficiency investigation using a HEK293T-human cell line indicates that ACE2 peptide-conjugated plasmonic-magnetic heterostructures have the capability of complete inhibition of entry of different variants and original SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirions into host cells.

Engineering Gold Shelled Nanomagnets for Pre-Setting the Operating Temperature for Magnetic Hyperthermia

This study investigated the fabrication of spherical gold shelled maghemite nanoparticles for use in magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) assays. A maghemite core (14 ± 3 nm) was used to fabricate two samples with different gold thicknesses, which presented gold (g)/maghemite (m) content ratios of 0.0376 and 0.0752. The samples were tested in MHT assays (temperature versus time) with varying frequencies (100-650 kHz) and field amplitudes (9-25 mT). The asymptotic temperatures (T∞) of the aqueous suspensions (40 mg Fe/mL) were found to be in the range of 59-77 °C (naked maghemite), 44-58 °C (g/m=0.0376) and 33-51 °C (g/m=0.0752). The MHT data revealed that T∞ could be successful controlled using the gold thickness and cover the range for cell apoptosis, thereby providing a new strategy for the safe use of MHT in practice. The highest SAR (specific absorption rate) value was achieved (75 kW/kg) using the thinner gold shell layer (334 kHz, 17 mT) and was roughly twenty times bigger than the best SAR value that has been reported for similar structures. Moreover, the time that was required to achieve T∞ could be modeled by changing the thermal conductivity of the shell layer and/or the shape/size of the structure. The MHT assays were pioneeringly modeled using a derived equation that was analytically identical to the Box-Lucas method (which was reported as phenomenological).

Multivalent stimulation of β1-, but not β2-receptors by adrenaline functionalised gold nanoparticles

In this study, we present a strategy for the synthesis of catecholamine functionalised gold nanoparticles and investigated their multivalent interactions with adrenergic receptors in different biological systems. The catecholamines adrenaline and noradrenaline represent key examples of adrenergic agonists. We used gold nanoparticles as carriers and functionalised them on their surface with a variety of these neurotransmitter molecules. For this purpose, we synthesised each ligand separately using mercaptoundecanoic acid as a bifunctional linking unit and adrenaline (or noradrenaline) as a biogenic amine. This ligand was then immobilised onto the surface of presynthesised spherical monodispersive gold nanoparticles in a ligand exchange reaction. After detailed analytical characterisations, the functionalised gold nanoparticles were investigated for their interactions with adrenergic receptors in intestinal, cardiac and respiratory tissues. Whereas the contractility of respiratory smooth muscle cells (regulated by β₂-receptors) was not influenced, (nor)adrenaline functionalised nanoparticles administered in nanomolar concentrations induced epithelial K⁺ secretion (mediated via different β-receptors) and increased contractility of isolated rat cardiomyocytes (mediated by β₁-receptors). The present results suggest differences in the accessibility of adrenergic agonists bound to gold nanoparticles to the binding pockets of different β-receptor subtypes.

The Synthesis Methodology and Characterization of Nanogold-Coated Fe3O4 Magnetic Nanoparticles

Core-shell nanostructures are widely used in many fields, including medicine and the related areas. An example of such structures are nanogold-shelled Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles. Systems consisting of a magnetic core and a shell made from nanogold show unique optical and magnetic properties. Thus, it is essential to develop the methodology of their preparation. Here, we report the synthesis methodology of Fe₃O₄@Au developed so as to limit their agglomeration and increase their stability. For this purpose, the impact of the reaction environment was verified. The properties of the particles were characterized via UV-Vis spectrophotometry, dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDS technique). Moreover, biological investigations, including determining the cytotoxicity of the particles towards murine fibroblasts and the pro-inflammatory activity were also performed. It was demonstrated that the application of an oil and water reaction environment leads to the preparation of the particles with lower polydispersity, whose agglomerates’ disintegration is 24 times faster than the disintegration of nanoparticle agglomerates formed as a result of the reaction performed in a water environment. Importantly, developed Fe₃O₄@Au nanoparticles showed no pro-inflammatory activity regardless of their concentration and the reaction environment applied during their synthesis and the viability of cell lines incubated for 24 h with the particle suspensions was at least 92.88%. Thus, the developed synthesis methodology of the particles as well as performed investigations confirmed a great application potential of developed materials for biomedical purposes.

Multimodal bioimaging using nanodiamond and gold hybrid nanoparticles

Hybrid core–shell nanodiamond-gold nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized as a novel multifunctional material with tunable and tailored properties for multifunctional biomedical applications. The combination of nanostructured gold and nanodiamond properties afford new options for optical labeling, imaging, sensing, and drug delivery, as well as targeted treatment. ND@Au core–shell nanoparticles composed of nanodiamond (ND) core doped with Si vacancies (SiV) and Au shell were synthesized and characterized in terms of their biomedical applications. Several bioimaging modalities based on the combination of optical and spectroscopic properties of the hybrid nano-systems are demonstrated in cellular and developing zebrafish larvae models. The ND@Au nanoparticles exhibit isolated ND’s Raman signal of sp3 bonded carbon, one-photon fluorescence of SiV with strong zero-phonon line at 740 nm, two-photon excited fluorescence of nanogold with short fluorescence lifetime and strong absorption of X-ray irradiation render them possible imaging agent for Raman mapping, Fluorescence imaging, two-photon Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging (TP-FLIM) and high-resolution hard-X-ray microscopy in biosystems. Potential combination of the imaging facilities with other theranostic functionalities is discussed.

Iron–Gold Nanoflowers: A Promising Tool for Multimodal Imaging and Hyperthermia Therapy

The development of nanoplatforms prepared to perform both multimodal imaging and combined therapies in a single entity is a fast-growing field. These systems are able to improve diagnostic accuracy and therapy success. Multicomponent Nanoparticles (MCNPs), composed of iron oxide and gold, offer new opportunities for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) diagnosis, as well as combined therapies based on Magnetic Hyperthermia (MH) and Photothermal Therapy (PT). In this work, we describe a new seed-assisted method for the synthesis of Au@Fe Nanoparticles (NPs) with a flower-like structure. For biomedical purposes, Au@Fe NPs were functionalized with a PEGylated ligand, leading to high colloidal stability. Moreover, the as-obtained Au@Fe-PEG NPs exhibited excellent features as both MRI and CT Contrast Agents (CAs), with high r2 relaxivity (60.5 mM−1⋅s−1) and X-ray attenuation properties (8.8 HU mM−1⋅HU). In addition, these nanoflowers presented considerable energy-to-heat conversion under both Alternating Magnetic Fields (AMFs) (∆T ≈ 2.5 °C) and Near-Infrared (NIR) light (∆T ≈ 17 °C). Finally, Au@Fe-PEG NPs exhibited very low cytotoxicity, confirming their potential for theranostics applications.

Laser-Ablative Synthesis of Ultrapure Magneto-Plasmonic Core-Satellite Nanocomposites for Biomedical Applications

The combination of magnetic and plasmonic properties at the nanoscale promises the development of novel synergetic image-guided therapy strategies for the treatment of cancer and other diseases, but the fabrication of non-contaminated magneto-plasmonic nanocomposites suitable for biological applications is difficult within traditional chemical methods. Here, we describe a methodology based on laser ablation from Fe target in the presence of preliminarily ablated water-dispersed Au nanoparticles (NPs) to synthesize ultrapure bare (ligand-free) core-satellite nanostructures, consisting of large (several tens of nm) Fe-based core decorated by small (mean size 7.5 nm) Au NPs. The presence of the Fe-based core conditions a relatively strong magnetic response of the nanostructures (magnetization of >12.6 emu/g), while the Au NPs-based satellite shell provides a broad extinction peak centered at 550 nm with a long tale in the near-infrared to overlap with the region of relative tissue transparency (650-950 nm). We also discuss possible mechanisms responsible for the formation of the magnetic-plasmonic nanocomposites. We finally demonstrate a protocol to enhance colloidal stability of the core-satellites in biological environment by their coating with different polymers. Exempt of toxic impurities and combining strong magnetic and plasmonic responses, the formed core-satellite nanocomposites can be used in biomedical applications, including photo- and magneto-induced therapies, magnetic resonance imaging or photoacoustic imaging.

Recent development for biomedical applications of magnetic nanoparticles

In recent decades, the use of engineered nanoparticles has been increasing in various sectors, including biomedicine, diagnosis, water treatment, and environmental remediation leading to significant public concerns. Among these nanoparticles, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have gained many attentions in medicine, pharmacology, drug delivery system, molecular imaging, and bio-sensing due to their various properties. In addition, various studies have reviewed MNPs main applications in the biomedical engineering area with intense progress and recent achievements. Nanoparticles, especially the magnetic nanoparticles, have recently been confirmed with excellent antiviral activity against different viruses, including SARS-CoV-2(Covid-19) and their recent development against Covid-19 also has also been discussed. This review aims to highlight the recent development of the magnetic nanoparticles and their biomedical applications such as diagnosis of diseases, molecular imaging, hyperthermia, bio-sensing, gene therapy, drug delivery and the diagnosis of Covid-19.

Assessing the parameters modulating optical losses of iron oxide nanoparticles under near infrared irradiation

Heating mediated by iron oxide nanoparticles subjected to near infrared irradiation has recently gained lots of interest. The high optical loss values reported in combination with the optical technologies already existing in current clinical practices, have made optical heating mediated by iron oxide nanoparticles an attractive choice for treating internal or skin tumors. However, the identification of the relevant parameters and the influence of methodologies for quantifying the optical losses released by iron oxide nanoparticles are not fully clear. Here, we report on a systematic study of different intrinsic (size, shape, crystallinity, and iron oxidation state) and extrinsic (aggregation, concentration, intracellular environment and irradiation conditions) parameters involved in the photothermal conversion of iron oxide nanoparticles under near infrared irradiation. We have probed the temperature increments to determine the specific loss power of iron oxide nanoparticles with different sizes and shapes dispersed in colloidal suspensions or inside live breast cancer cells. Our results underline the relevance of crystal surface defects, aggregation, concentration, magnetite abundance, excitation wavelength and density power on the modulation of the photothermal conversion. Contrary to plasmonic or magnetic losses, no significant influence of nanoparticle size nor shape was observed on the optical losses released by the studied iron oxide nanoparticles. Interestingly, no significant differences of measured temperature increments and specific loss power values were either observed when nanoparticles were inside live cells or in colloidal dispersion. Our findings highlight the advantages of optical heat losses released by iron oxide nanoparticles for therapeutic applications.

Catalytic ferromagnetic gold nanoparticle immunoassay for the detection and differentiation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium bovis

A ferromagnetic gold nanoparticle based immune detection assay, exploiting the enhanced signal amplification of inorganic nanozymes, was developed and evaluated for its potential application in the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) organisms, and simultaneous identification of Mycobacterium bovis. Ferromagnetic gold nanoparticles (Au-Fe₃O₄ NPs) were prepared and their intrinsic peroxidase-like activity exploited to catalyse 3,3',5',5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). When the Au-Fe₃O₄ NPs were functionalised by direct coupling with MTBC-selective antibodies, a nanoparticle based immune detection assay (NPIDA) was developed which could detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and differentiate M. bovis. In the assay, the intrinsic magnetic capability of the functionalised Au-Fe₃O₄ NPs was used in sample preparation to capture target bacterial cells. These were incorporated into a novel immunoassay which used species selective monoclonal antibodies (mAb) to detect bound target. The formation of a blue TMB oxidation product, with a peak absorbance of 370 nm, indicated successful capture and identification of the target. The detection limit of the NPIDA for both MTB and M. bovis was determined to be comparable to conventional ELISA using the same antibodies. Although limited matrix effects were observed in either assay, the NPIDA offers a reduced time to confirmatory identification. This novel NPIDA was capable of simultaneous sample concentration, purification, immunological detection and speciation. To our knowledge, it represents the first immune-based diagnostic test capable of identifying MTBC organisms and simultaneously differentiating M. bovis.

The characteristics of Raman spectroscopy of fenbendazole-gold nanoparticles based on the chemical adsorption effect

Fenbendazole, a benzimidazole derivative with anti-tubulin polymerization properties, has been widely used in the treatment of parasitic infections. Because of its anticancer activity similar to that of many anticancer drugs, low cost and few side effects, fenbendazole has attracted wide research attention. The chemical adsorption of fenbendazole and gold nanoparticles are studied by the UV-Vis spectrophotometry, density functional method, Raman spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. By comparing and analyzing the theoretical and experimental Raman spectra, this paper explains the reasons for the difference between the theoretical and experimental Raman spectra. Meanwhile, it is also found that the frequencies at 851 cm^-1, 1222 cm^-1, 1425 cm^-1 and 1566 cm^-1 are greatly enhanced. It is found that imidazole is adsorbed vertically to the surface of the substrate. It is concluded that Fenbendazole is vertically adsorbed on the surface of AuNPs through imidazole.

Progress and prospects of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in biomedical applications: A review

Nanoscience has been considered as one of the most substantial research in modern science. The utilization of nanoparticle (NP) materials provides numerous advantages in biomedical applications due to their unique properties. Among various types of nanoparticles, the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) of iron oxide possess intrinsic features, which have been efficiently exploited for biomedical purposes including drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging, Magnetic-activated cell sorting, nanobiosensors, hyperthermia, and tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The size and shape of nanostructures are the main factors affecting the physicochemical features of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, which play an important role in the improvement of MNP properties, and can be controlled by appropriate synthesis strategies. On the other hand, the proper modification and functionalization of the surface of iron oxide nanoparticles have significant effects on the improvement of physicochemical and mechanical features, biocompatibility, stability, and surface activity of MNPs. This review focuses on popular methods of fabrication, beneficial surface coatings with regard to the main required features for their biomedical use, as well as new applications.

Nano-Carriers of Combination Tumor Physical Stimuli-Responsive Therapies

With the development of nanotechnology, Tumor Physical Stimuli-Responsive Therapies (TPSRTs) have reached a new stage because of the remarkable characteristics of nanocarriers. The nanocarriers enable such therapies to overcome the drawbacks of traditional therapies, such as radiotherapy or chemotherapy. To further explore the possibility of the nanocarrier-assisted TPSRTs, scientists have combined different TPSRTs via; the platform of nanocarriers into combination TPSRTs, which include Photothermal Therapy (PTT) with Magnetic Hyperthermia Therapy (MHT), PTT with Sonodynamic Therapy (SDT), MHT with Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), and PDT with PTT. To achieve such therapies, it requires to fully utilize the versatile functions of a specific nanocarrier, which depend on a pellucid understanding of the traits of those nanocarriers. This review covers the principles of different TPSRTs and their combinations, summarizes various types of combination TPSRTs nanocarriers and their therapeutic effects on tumors, and discusses the current disadvantages and future developments of these nanocarriers in the application of combination TPSRTs.

Poly(ethylene-imine)-Functionalized Magnetite Nanoparticles Derivatized with Folic Acid: Heating and Targeting Properties

Magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) coated by branched poly (ethylene-imine) (PEI) were synthesized in a one-pot. Three molecular weights of PEI were tested, namely, 1.8 kDa (sample MNP-1), 10 kDa (sample MNP-2), and 25 kDa (sample MNP-3). The MNP-1 particles were further functionalized with folic acid (FA) (sample MNP-4). The four types of particles were found to behave magnetically as superparamagnetic, with MNP-1 showing the highest magnetization saturation. The particles were evaluated as possible hyperthermia agents by subjecting them to magnetic fields of 12 kA/m strength and frequencies ranging between 115 and 175 kHz. MNP-1 released the maximum heating power, reaching 330 W/g at the highest frequency, in the high side of reported values for spherical MNPs. In vitro cell viability assays of MNP-1 and MNP-4 against three cell lines expressing different levels of FA receptors (FR), namely, HEK (low expression), and HeLa (high expression), and HepG2 (high expression), demonstrated that they are not cytotoxic. When the cells were incubated in the presence of a 175 kHz magnetic field, a significant reduction in cell viability and clone formation was obtained for the high expressing FR cells incubated with MNP-4, suggesting that MNP-4 particles are good candidates for magnetic field hyperthermia and active targeting.

Inorganic-inorganic nanohybrids for drug delivery, imaging and photo-therapy: recent developments and future scope

Advanced nanotechnology has been emerging rapidly in terms of novel hybrid nanomaterials that have found various applications in day-to-day life for the betterment of the public. Specifically, gold, iron, silica, hydroxy apatite, and layered double hydroxide based nanohybrids have shown tremendous progress in biomedical applications, including bio-imaging, therapeutic delivery and photothermal/dynamic therapy. Moreover, recent progress in up-conversion nanohybrid materials is also notable because they have excellent NIR imaging capability along with therapeutic benefits which would be useful for treating deep-rooted tumor tissues. Our present review highlights recent developments in inorganic-inorganic nanohybrids, and their applications in bio-imaging, drug delivery, and photo-therapy. In addition, their future scope is also discussed in detail.

Simple synthesis of gold-decorated silica nanoparticles by in situ precipitation method with new plasmonic properties

We describe a simple method for the preparation of gold-decorated silica (SiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) by the in situ precipitation method using simple BH4− ions reduction as a procedure, where BH4− ions are adsorbed onto PEI-functionalized SiO2 NPs for stabilizing and reducing gold ions onto PEI-SiO2 surface in water under ambient conditions. The result was 3-nm gold nanoshell NPs attached to SiO2 core (~ 75 nm) with a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) at ~ 680 nm. SPR band is associated with Au NP aggregates that arise from strong interparticle interaction. This is an alternative to the gold-seeding methods and the use of anionic gold species for the obtention of gold-decorated SiO2 NPs with an important red-shift in UV–Vis absorption and with potential applications in biosensors and photothermal therapy.

Hybrid magnetic nanoparticles as efficient nanoheaters in biomedical applications

Heating at the nanoscale is the basis of several biomedical applications, including magnetic hyperthermia therapies and heat-triggered drug delivery. The combination of multiple inorganic materials in hybrid magnetic nanoparticles provides versatile platforms to achieve an efficient heat delivery upon different external stimuli or to get an optical feedback during the process. However, the successful design and application of these nanomaterials usually require intricate synthesis routes and their magnetic response is still not fully understood. In this review we give an overview of the novel systems reported in the last few years, which have been mostly obtained by organic phase-based synthesis and epitaxial growth processes. Since the heating efficiency of hybrid magnetic nanoparticles often relies on the exchange-interaction between their components, we discuss various interface-phenomena that are responsible for their magnetic properties. Finally, followed by a brief comment on future directions in the field, we outline recent advances on multifunctional nanoparticles that can boost the heating power with light and combine heating and temperature sensing in a single nanomaterial.

Advanced Functional Nanostructures based on Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanomaterials for Water Remediation: A Review

The fast growth of industrialization combined with the increasing population has led to an unparalleled demand for providing water in a safe, reliable, and cost-effective way, which has become one of the biggest challenges of the twenty-first century faced by global society. The application of nanotechnology in water treatment and pollution cleanup is a promising alternative in order to overcome the current limitations. In particular, the application of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONs) for environmental remediation has currently received remarkable attention due to its unique combination of physicochemical and magnetic properties. Given the broadening use of these functional engineered nanomaterials, there is a growing concern about the adverse effects upon exposure of products and by-products to the environment. This makes vitally relevant the development of green chemistry in the synthesis processes combined with a trustworthy risk assessment of the nanotoxicity of MIONs as the scientific knowledge of the potential hazard of nanomaterials remains limited. This work provides comprehensive coverage of the recent progress on designing and developing iron oxide-based nanomaterials through a green synthesis strategy, including the use of benign solvents and ligands. Despite the limitations of nanotoxicity and environmental risks of iron oxide-based nanoparticles for the ecosystem, this critical review presents a contribution to the emerging knowledge concerning the theoretical and experimental studies on the toxicity of MIONs. Potential improvement of applications of advanced iron oxide-based hybrid nanostructures in water treatment and pollution control is also addressed in this review.

One-step synthesis of polyethyleneimine-coated magnetite nanoparticles and their structural, magnetic and power absorption study

Magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) are especially interesting for several biomedical applications due to their chemical surface, especially for targeted cancer imaging and therapeutics. In order to realize these applications, it is important to know their magnetic properties among other complementary properties that help to improve the understanding of the synthesis process. In this work, we report the magnetic properties of polyethyleneimine-coated magnetite (PEI-Fe₃O₄) NPs synthesized by a one-step method via the co-precipitation method and using PEI as a stabilizer. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed agglomerated magnetic nanoparticles with an average size of ∼10 nm; meanwhile, the X-ray diffraction (DRX) analysis confirmed a pure magnetite phase. The study of magnetic properties shows a superparamagnetic system with coexistence of non-interacting single NPs with a low blocking temperature (∼35 K) and interacting NPs in the aggregates with a higher blocking temperature (>150 K), in which the interparticle interactions of magnetic cores dominate over surface spin disorder. The interaction between the surface spin-disorder layer and NP core was found to be weak, related to a weak exchange bias effect. A maximum specific loss power (SLP) value of 70 W g⁻¹ was obtained (f = 571 kHz and H = 23.87 kA m⁻¹) indicating that the magnetic response plays a crucial role in determining the heating efficiency for future applications.

Remotely Activated Nanoparticles for Anticancer Therapy

Cancer has nowadays become one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Conventional anticancer approaches are associated with different limitations. Therefore, innovative methodologies are being investigated, and several researchers propose the use of remotely activated nanoparticles to trigger cancer cell death. The idea is to conjugate two different components, i.e., an external physical input and nanoparticles. Both are given in a harmless dose that once combined together act synergistically to therapeutically treat the cell or tissue of interest, thus also limiting the negative outcomes for the surrounding tissues. Tuning both the properties of the nanomaterial and the involved triggering stimulus, it is possible furthermore to achieve not only a therapeutic effect, but also a powerful platform for imaging at the same time, obtaining a nano-theranostic application. In the present review, we highlight the role of nanoparticles as therapeutic or theranostic tools, thus excluding the cases where a molecular drug is activated. We thus present many examples where the highly cytotoxic power only derives from the active interaction between different physical inputs and nanoparticles. We perform a special focus on mechanical waves responding nanoparticles, in which remotely activated nanoparticles directly become therapeutic agents without the need of the administration of chemotherapeutics or sonosensitizing drugs.

Synthesis and Characterization of Citrate-Stabilized Gold-Coated Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications

Surface-functionalized gold-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Au-SPIONs) may be a useful tool in various biomedical applications. To obtain Au-SPIONs, gold salt was precipitated onto citrate-stabilized SPIONs (Cit-SPIONs) using a simple, aqueous one-pot technique inspired by the Turkevich method of gold nanoparticle synthesis. By the further stabilization of the Au-SPION surface with additional citrate (Cit-Au-SPIONs), controllable and reproducible Z-averages enhanced long-term dispersion stability and moderate dispersion pH values were achieved. The citrate concentration of the reaction solution and the gold/iron ratio was found to have a major influence on the particle characteristics. While the gold-coating reduced the saturation magnetization to 40.7% in comparison to pure Cit-SPIONs, the superparamagnetic behavior of Cit-Au-SPIONs was maintained. The formation of nanosized gold on the SPION surface was confirmed by X-ray diffraction measurements. Cit-Au-SPION concentrations of up to 100 µg Fe/mL for 48 h had no cytotoxic effect on Jurkat cells. At a particle concentration of 100 µg Fe/mL, Jurkat cells were found to take up Cit-Au-SPIONs after 24 h of incubation. A significantly higher attachment of thiol-containing L-cysteine to the particle surface was observed for Cit-Au-SPIONs (53%) in comparison to pure Cit-SPIONs (7%).

In vitro hyperthermic effect of magnetic fluid on cervical and breast cancer cells

Self-regulating temperature-controlled nanoparticles such as Mn–Zn ferrite nanoparticles based magnetic fluid can be a better choice for magnetic fluid hyperthermia because of its controlled regulation of hyperthermia temperature window of 43–45 °C. To test this hypothesis magnetic fluid with said properties was synthesized, and its effect on cervical and breast cancer cell death was studied. We found that the hyperthermia window of 43–45 °C was maintained for one hour at the smallest possible concentration of 0.35 mg/mL without altering the magnetic field applicator parameters. Their hyperthermic effect on HeLa and MCF7 was investigated at the magnetic field of 15.3 kA/m and frequency 330 kHz, which is close to the upper safety limit of 5 * 10⁹ A/m s. We have tested the cytotoxicity of synthesized Mn–Zn ferrite fluid using MTT assay and the results were validated by trypan blue dye exclusion assay that provides the naked eye microscopic view of actual cell death. Since cancer cells tend to resist treatment and show re-growth, we also looked into the effect of multiple sessions hyperthermia using a 24 h window till 72 h using trypan blue assay. The multiple sessions of hyperthermia showed promising results, and it indicated that a minimum of 3 sessions, each of one-hour duration, is required for the complete killing of cancer cells. Moreover, to simulate an in vivo cellular environment, a phantom consisting of magnetic nanoparticles dispersed in 1 and 5% agarose gel was constituted and studied. These results will help to decide the magnetic fluid based hyperthermic therapeutic strategies using temperature-sensitive magnetic fluid.

Plasmon-induced Ag decorated CeO2 nanorod array for photodetector application

In this work, glancing angle deposition (GLAD) has been used to grow Ag decorated CeO₂ nanorod (NR) array on n-type Si substrate. The length of the NRs obtained was ∼235 nm and the size of the Ag NPs varied from 13 to 41 nm. The polycrystalline and crystalline nature of CeO₂ and Ag respectively was revealed via selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analysis as well as x-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern. Optical absorption measurement depicts a distinct broad peak around 413 nm that is ascribed to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Ag NPs. The Ag decorated CeO₂ NR device exhibited a turn on voltage at ∼3.2 V under dark, which then reduced to ∼1.3 V under 35 min illumination along with the increase in device current from 2.8 to 24.5 μA cm^-2 (4 V) on continuous exposure to light. Under white light illumination, a responsivity of 4.51 A W^-1 was obtained at 370 nm along with the detectivity and noise equivalent power (NEP) values of 4.15 × 10¹² jones and 0.01 pW respectively. Additionally, a fast response characteristic with rise and fall times of 74 ms and 42 ms respectively was demonstrated. Thus, these findings manifest the underlying LSPR mechanism at work in Ag/CeO₂ heterojunction and reveal its high potential in UV photodetector application.

Production of gold/silver doped carbon nanocomposites for effective photothermal therapy of colon cancer

Surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy is a reliable therapy for colon cancer, but is associated with side effects and risks. Recent advancements in nanobioengineering in the form of targeted nanoparticles, cubosomes, liposomes, nanosheets, nanorods, quantum dots have generated substantial advancements in theranostics of colon cancer decreasing the cytotoxic drugs' side effects. We describe a facile mechanism of preparation of hybrid nanocomposite encompassing Au and Ag. Preparation of hybrid nanocomposite is one step process which may be easily escalated. The nanocomposite was characterized using transmission eleactron microscopy, energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence and cytotoxic studies. In-vivo studies were carried out in Balb/c mice. Photothermal heating experiments in HeLa cells were promising and the characterization studies clearly indicated the formation of hybrid nanocomposite. In-vivo experiments confirmed the efficacy of treatment, along with involvement of epigenetic regulation, which may be helpful in translation from research to clinical applications.

Core-Shell Imidazoline-Functionalized Mesoporous Silica Superparamagnetic Hybrid Nanoparticles as a Potential Theranostic Agent for Controlled Delivery of Platinum(II) Compound

Introduction

As widely used chemotherapeutic agents, platinum compounds have several therapeutic challenges, such as drug resistance and adverse effects. Theranostic systems, macromolecular or colloidal therapeutics with companion diagnostics, not only address controlled drug delivery but also enable real-time monitoring of tumor sites.

Methods

Synthesis of magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MMSNs) was performed for dual magnetic resonance imaging and drug delivery. MMSN surfaces were modified by imidazoline groups (MMSN-Imi) for cisplatin (Cis-Pt) conjugation via free N-termini to achieve well-controlled drug-release kinetics. Cis-Pt adsorption isotherms and drug-release profile at pH 5 and 7.4 were investigated using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy.

Results

MMSN-Imi showed a specific surface area of 517.6 m² g⁻¹, mean pore diameter of 3.26 nm, and saturated magnetization of 53.63 emu/g. A relatively high r₂/r₁ relaxivity value was obtained for MMSN-Imi. The nanoparticles provided high Cis-Pt loading with acceptable loading capacity (~30% w:w). Sustained release of Cis-Pt under acidic conditions led to specific inhibitory effects on the growth of human epithelial ovarian carcinoma cells, determined using MTT assays. Dual acridine orange–propidium iodide staining was investigated, confirming induction of apoptosis and necrotic cell death.

Conclusion

MMSN-Imi exhibited potential for applications in cancer chemotherapy and combined imaging.

A Modular Millifluidic Platform for the Synthesis of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles with Control over Dissolved Gas and Flow Configuration

Gas-liquid reactions are poorly explored in the context of nanomaterials synthesis, despite evidence of significant effects of dissolved gas on nanoparticle properties. This applies to the aqueous synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles, where gaseous reactants can influence reaction rate, particle size and crystal structure. Conventional batch reactors offer poor control of gas-liquid mass transfer due to lack of control on the gas-liquid interface and are often unsafe when used at high pressure. This work describes the design of a modular flow platform for the water-based synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles through the oxidative hydrolysis of Fe2+ salts, targeting magnetic hyperthermia applications. Four different reactor systems were designed through the assembly of two modular units, allowing control over the type of gas dissolved in the solution, as well as the flow pattern within the reactor (single-phase and liquid-liquid two-phase flow). The two modular units consisted of a coiled millireactor and a tube-in-tube gas-liquid contactor. The straightforward pressurization of the system allows control over the concentration of gas dissolved in the reactive solution and the ability to operate the reactor at a temperature above the solvent boiling point. The variables controlled in the flow system (temperature, flow pattern and dissolved gaseous reactants) allowed full conversion of the iron precursor to magnetite/maghemite nanocrystals in just 3 min, as compared to several hours normally employed in batch. The single-phase configuration of the flow platform allowed the synthesis of particles with sizes between 26.5 nm (in the presence of carbon monoxide) and 34 nm. On the other hand, the liquid-liquid two-phase flow reactor showed possible evidence of interfacial absorption, leading to particles with different morphology compared to their batch counterpart. When exposed to an alternating magnetic field, the particles produced by the four flow systems showed ILP (intrinsic loss parameter) values between 1.2 and 2.7 nHm2/kg. Scale up by a factor of 5 of one of the configurations was also demonstrated. The scaled-up system led to the synthesis of nanoparticles of equivalent quality to those produced with the small-scale reactor system. The equivalence between the two systems is supported by a simple analysis of the transport phenomena in the small and large-scale setups.

Morphology of Composite Fe@Au Submicron Particles, Produced with Ultrasonic Spray Pyrolysis and Potential for Synthesis of Fe@Au Core-Shell Particles

Iron core–gold shell (Fe@Au) nanoparticles are prominent for their magnetic and optical properties, which are especially beneficial for biomedical uses. Some experiments were carried out to produce Fe@Au particles with a one-step synthesis method, Ultrasonic Spray Pyrolysis (USP), which is able to produce the particles in a continuous process. The Fe@Au particles were produced with USP from a precursor solution with dissolved Iron (III) chloride and Gold (III) chloride, with Fe/Au concentration ratios ranging from 0.1 to 4. The resulting products are larger Fe oxide particles (mostly maghemite Fe₂O₃), with mean sizes of about 260–390 nm, decorated with Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) with mean sizes of around 24–67 nm. The Fe oxide core particles are mostly spherical in all of the experiments, while the AuNPs become increasingly irregular and more heavily agglomerated with lower Fe/Au concentration ratios in the precursor solution. The resulting particle morphology from these experiments is caused by surface chemistry and particle to solvent interactions during particle formation inside the USP system.
