Anthropogenic pollutant-driven geographical distribution of mesozooplankton communities in estuarine areas of the Bohai Sea, China

Contrasting benthic bacterial and fungal communities in two temperate coastal areas affected by different levels of anthropogenic pressure

Benthic microbial communities play a crucial role in maintaining the stability and function of estuarine ecosystems. However, their organization and response to multiple stresses in severely disturbed coastal areas remains to be elucidated. In this study, we revealed the presence of contrasting benthic bacterial and fungal communities in the Liaohe (LH) and Yalujiang (YLJ) estuaries, which are located at similar latitudes and are characterized by similar climates but are subjected to different levels of anthropogenic pressure. The results showed that Firmicutes and Chloroflexi were more abundant in LH, which reflected the influence of anthropogenic pressure in this area. Functional analyses indicated that the functional genes involved in the generation of precursor metabolites and energy pathways were more enriched in the LH community, while genes regulating degradation/utilization/assimilation processes were more enriched in the YLJ community. Distance-dependent similarity analysis showed that the bacterial community in LH was more affected by environmental changes, while that in YLJ was more influenced by geographic dispersion. In contrast, no significant distance-dependent similarity was found for the fungal communities in the two areas. In addition, the network analysis showed that the bacterial-fungal network in YLJ was more complex and stable than that in the LH. Our results highlight the important roles of environmental heterogeneity in controlling microbial community composition, biogeographic patterns, and co-occurrence networks. These findings fill knowledge gaps in the understanding of the different response patterns of benthic communities under varying anthropogenic pressures.

Long-term monitoring of the fish community in the Minho Estuary (NW Iberian Peninsula)

Background

The paper presents an extensive fish sampling dataset spanning a long-term period from 2010 to 2019. The data were collected in Lenta Marina, an upstream area in the Minho Estuary of the NW Iberian Peninsula, which belongs to a LTSER (Long-Term Socio-Ecological Research) platform. To capture fish, fyke nets were utilised as the sampling method and deployed at Lenta Marina. This dataset offers valuable insights into the abundance of each collected taxa recorded over time.

New information

The dataset reports a comprehensive compilation of data on the abundance of fish species observed in the area during the sampling period (includes zeroes when a given taxonomic entity was absent in a given sampling event). It provides a detailed record of the abundances of the fish community through time in a frequent sampling regime (on average, sampling was done every 6 days). The dataset shows that the amount of fish from invasive taxa exceeds the count of fish from native taxa in the Minho Estuary.

Taxon-dependent effects of dispersal limitation versus environmental filters on bryophyte assemblages-Multiple perspective studies in land-bridge islands

To explore the taxon-dependent contribution of dispersal limitation versus environmental filters to bryophyte assemblages. We investigated bryophytes and six environmental variables on 168 islands in the Thousand Island Lake,China. We compared the observed beta diversity with the expected values based on six null models (EE, EF, FE, FF, PE, and PF), detected the partial correlation of beta diversity with geographical distances. We quantified the contributions of spatial versus environmental variables and island isolation per se to species composition (SC) using variance partitioning. We modeled the species-area relationships (SARs) for bryophytes and the other eight biotas. To explore the taxon-dependent effects of spatial versus environmental filters on bryophytes, 16 taxa including five categories (total bryophytes, total mosses, liverworts, acrocarpous, and pleurocarpous mosses) and 11 species-richest families were included in the analyses. The observed beta diversity values were significantly different from the predicted values for all 16 taxa. For all five categories, the observed partial correlations between beta diversity and geographical distance after controlling environmental effects were not only positive, but also significantly different from the predicted values based on the null models. Spatial eigenvectors are more important in shaping SC than environmental variables for all 16 taxa except Brachytheciaceae and Anomodontaceae. Spatial eigenvectors contributed more to SC variation in liverworts than in mosses and in pleurocarpous mosses than in acrocarpous mosses. The effects of island isolation on SC were significant for all five categories, highly varied at the family level. The z values of the SARs for the five bryophyte categories were all larger than those of the other eight biotas. In subtropical fragmented forests, dispersal limitation exerted significant, taxon-dependent effects on bryophyte assemblages. It was dispersal limitation rather than environmental filtering that predominantly regulated the SC patterns of bryophytes.

Community assembly patterns and processes of microbiome responses to habitats and Mytilopsis sallei invasion in the tidal zones of the Pearl River Estuary

The sustainability of estuarine ecosystem functions depends on the stabilization of microbial ecological processes. However, due to the unique and variable habitat characteristics of estuarine areas, in-depth studies on ecological processes such as the spatial distribution and assembly patterns of microbial community structure are lacking. As methods to elucidate this structure, we used 16S rDNA, 18S rDNA and ITS sequencing technologies to study the composition, diversity, spatial pattern and aggregation mechanism of the bacterial, protist and fungal communities in the tidal zones of the Pearl River Estuary (PRETZ). The abundance of bacterial communities was much higher than that of protists and fungi, and the spatial pattern was obvious in PRETZ. The application of neutral and null models revealed the assembly process of three microbial communities dominated by stochastic processes. Among the stochastic processes, undominated processes (64.03 %, 62.45 %, and 59.29 %) were the most critical processes in the assembly of bacterial, fungal and protist communities. Meanwhile, environmental variables, geographic locations, and biological factors were associated with the composition and assembly of bacterial, protist, and fungal communities. Among the environmental variables, dissolved oxygen and salinity were the main predictors that jointly affected the differences in the community structure of the three microorganisms, and geographic location was the second predictor affecting the community structure of the three microorganisms and had a more pronounced effect on the diversity and network structure of the bacterial and fungal communities. However, biological factors exerted a weaker effect on the microbial community structure than spatial factors and only affected bacteria and protists; the invasive species Mytilopsis sallei only affected the process of protist community assembly. In addition, environmental variables affected the relative importance of stochastic processes. In summary, the formation of microbial communities in the PRETZ was affected by random processes, environmental variables, geographic location, and invasive species.

Emission Characteristics of Air Pollutants and CO2 from 11 Cities with Different Economic Development around the Bohai Sea in China from 2008-2017

Cities around the Bohai Sea are one of the main population cluster areas in China, which are characterized by high levels of sustainability performance and human capital, as well as resource-intensive industries. In this study, levels of economic development metrics and emissions of air pollutants (BC, CO, NH₃, NO_x, OC, PM_2.5, PM₁₀, and SO₂) and CO₂ across eleven cities around the Bohai Sea from 2008 to 2017 were compared to illustrate the potential relationships between air pollutants/carbon emissions and socioeconomic developments. Meanwhile, the associations between the levels of economic development metrics (GDP per capita), emissions, and energy use per GDP have also been examined. Large differences across these 11 cities presenting different economic development levels and energy consumption characteristics have been observed. Cities with development dependable on the consumption of fossil fuels and the development of resource-intensive industries have emitted large amounts of air pollutants and CO₂. Furthermore, the emissions and energy use per GDP for all the cities follow environmental Kuznets curves. The comparison results suggested that the developing cities dependable on resource-intensive industries around the Bohai Sea would obtain greater socioeconomic benefits owing to the interregional cooperation policies under top-down socioeconomic development plans and bottom-up technology development, accompanied by reduced emissions of air pollutants and CO₂.

Toxicological responses of juvenile Chinese shrimp Fenneropenaeus chinensis and swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus exposed to cadmium

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the typical metal pollutants in the Bohai Sea. To evaluate the acute toxicological effects of Cd on marine crustaceans, juvenile Fenneropenaeus chinensis and Portunus trituberculatus were exposed to Cd at environmentally relevant concentrations (5 and 50 μg/L) for 96 h. Cd accumulation, antioxidants and metabolite profiles were characterized to elucidate the responses of juvenile crustaceans to Cd stress. Significant Cd accumulation was observed in both juvenile crustaceans in 50 μg/L Cd-treated group. Results showed that Cd exposure induced hormesis based on the alterations of GSH, SOD and CAT activities (i.e. increased levels in the low concentration of Cd treatment and recovered levels in the high concentration of Cd treatment) in juvenile P. trituberculatus. Similarly, the responses of GSH contents presented hormesis pattern in Cd-treated juvenile F. chinensis. Na+-K+-ATPase contents were significantly elevated in 50 μg/L Cd-treated group. In addition, untargeted NMR-based metabolomics indicated Cd caused the disturbance in osmotic regulation and energy consumption in both juvenile F. chinensis and P. trituberculatus via different pathways. The immunotoxicity and movement disorder were uniquely demonstrated in juvenile P. trituberculatus after Cd exposure.

Contrasting the assembly of phytoplankton and zooplankton communities in a polluted semi-closed sea: Effects of marine compartments and environmental selection

Understanding the underlying mechanisms of community assembly is a major challenge in microbial ecology, particularly in communities composed of diverse organisms with different ecological characteristics. However, very little is known about the effects of marine compartments in shaping marine planktonic communities; primarily, how they are related to organism types and environmental variables. In this study, we used multiple statistical methods to explore the mechanisms driving phytoplankton and zooplankton metacommunity dynamics at the regional scale in the Bohai Sea, China. Clear geographic patterns were observed in both phytoplankton and zooplankton communities. Zooplankton showed a stronger distance-decay of similarity than phytoplankton, which had greater community differences between locations with further distances. Our analyses indicated that the zooplankton communities were primarily governed by species sorting versus dispersal limitation than the phytoplankton communities. Furthermore, we detected that zooplankton exhibited wider habitat niche breadths and dispersal abilities than phytoplankton. Our findings also showed that environmental pollution affected high trophic organisms via food webs; the presence of heavy metals in the Bohai Sea altered the abundance of some phytoplankton, and thus modified the zooplankton that feed on them.

Trace metal bioaccumulation in oysters (Crassostrea gigas) from Liaodong Bay (Bohai Sea, China)

Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations were measured in oysters (C. gigas), plankton, and seawater during spring, summer, and autumn in Liaodong Bay (Bohai Sea, China) to elucidate the effects of season, region, and oyster size on metal bioaccumulation in oysters. Metal concentrations were quantified via atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Our study determined that metal concentrations in oysters, plankton, and seawater were the highest in summer, whereas the lowest levels occurred in autumn. Regarding oyster sizes, the highest Pb levels occurred in C3-sized oysters (> 5-cm length), whereas the highest Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn levels occurred in C2 (3-5-cm length) oysters. In contrast, the lowest Cu and Pb levels occurred in C1 (< 3-cm length) oysters, whereas the lowest mean Cd, Cr, and Zn concentrations were observed in C3 oysters. Significant differences in trace metal concentrations in the three sample types were observed in all sampling sites.

DNA metabarcoding of zooplankton communities: species diversity and seasonal variation revealed by 18S rRNA and COI

Background

Zooplankton is an important component of aquatic organisms and has important biological and economical significance in freshwater ecosystems. However, traditional methods that rely on morphology to classify zooplankton require expert taxonomic skills. Moreover, traditional classification methods are time-consuming and labor-intensive, which is not practical for the design of conservation measures and ecological management tools based on zooplankton diversity assessment.

Methods

We used DNA metabarcoding technology with two different markers: the nuclear small subunit ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase (COI), to analyze 72 zooplankton samples collected in 4 seasons and 9 locations from the Sanmenxia Reservoir. We investigated seasonal changes in the zooplankton community and their relationship with water environmental factors.

Results

A total of 190 species of zooplankton were found, belonging to 12 phyla, 24 classes, 61 orders, 111 families, and 174 genera. Protozoa, especially ciliates, were the most diverse taxa. Richness and relative abundance of zooplankton showed significant seasonal changes. Both alpha and beta diversity showed seasonal trends: the diversity in summer and autumn was higher than that in winter and spring. The zooplankton diversity was most similar in winter and spring. By correlating metabarcoding data and water environmental factors, we proved that water temperature, chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen and ammoniacal nitrogen were the main environmental factors driving the seasonal changes in zooplankton in the Sanmenxia Reservoir. Water temperature, followed by total nitrogen, were the most influential factors. This study highlights the advantages and some limitations of zooplankton molecular biodiversity assessment using two molecular markers.

Comparative metagenomics reveals the microbial diversity and metabolic potentials in the sediments and surrounding seawaters of Qinhuangdao mariculture area

Qinhuangdao coastal area is an important mariculture area in North China. Microbial communities play an important role in driving biogeochemical cycle and energy flow. It is necessary to identify the microbial communities and their functions in the coastal mariculture area of Qinhuangdao. In this study, the microbial community compositions and their metabolic potentials in the sediments and their surrounding seawaters of Qinhuangdao mariculture area were uncovered by the 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and metagenomic shotgun sequencing approaches. The results of amplicon sequencing showed that Gammaproteobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria were predominant classes. Our datasets showed a clear shift in microbial taxonomic groups and the metabolic pathways in the sediments and surrounding seawaters. Metagenomic analysis showed that purine metabolism, ABC transporters, and pyrimidine metabolism were the most abundant pathways. Genes related to two-component system, TCA cycle and nitrogen metabolism exhibited higher abundance in sediments compared with those in seawaters. The presence of cadmium-resistant genes and ABC transporters suggested the ability of microorganisms to resist the toxicity of cadmium. In summary, this study provides comprehensive and significant differential signatures in the microbial community and metabolic pathways in Qinhuangdao mariculture area, and can develop effective microbial indicators to monitor mariculture area in the future.
