Removal of radioactive cesium from an aqueous solution via bioaccumulation by microalgae and magnetic separation

Settling selection of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii for samarium uptake

Samarium (Sm) is a rare-earth element recently included in the list of critical elements due to its vital role in emerging new technologies. With an increasing demand for Sm, microbial bioremediation may provide a cost-effective and a more ecologically responsible alternative to remove and recover Sm. We capitalized on a previously selected Chlamydomonas reinhardtii strain tolerant to Sm (1.33 × 10-4 M) and acidic pH and carried out settling selection to increase the Sm uptake performance. We observed a rapid response to selection in terms of cellular phenotype. Cellular size decreased and circularity increased in a stepwise manner with every cycle of selection. After four cycles of selection, the derived CSm4 strain was significantly smaller and was capable of sequestrating 41% more Sm per cell (1.7 × 10-05 ± 1.7 × 10-06 ng) and twice as much Sm in terms of wet biomass (4.0 ± 0.4 mg Sm · g-1) compared to the ancestral candidate strain. The majority (~70%) of the Sm was bioaccumulated intracellularly, near acidocalcisomes or autophagic vacuoles as per TEM-EDX microanalyses. However, Sm analyses suggest a stronger response toward bioabsorption resulting from settling selection. Despite working with Sm and pH-tolerant strains, we observed an effect on fitness and photosynthesis inhibition when the strains were grown with Sm. Our results clearly show that phenotypic selection, such as settling selection, can significantly enhance Sm uptake. Laboratory selection of microalgae for rare-earth metal bioaccumulation and sorption can be a promising biotechnological approach.

Simultaneous removal of caesium and strontium using different removal mechanisms of probiotic bacteria

When radioactive materials are released into the environment due to nuclear power plant accidents, they may enter into the body, and exposing it to internal radiation for long periods of time. Although several agents have been developed that help excrete radioactive elements from the digestive tract, only one type of radioactive element can be removed using a single agent. Therefore, we considered the simultaneous removal of caesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr) by utilising the multiple metal removal mechanisms of probiotic bacteria. In this study, the Cs and Sr removal capacities of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria were investigated. Observation using an electron probe micro analyser suggested that Cs was accumulated within the bacterial cells. Since Sr was removed non metabolically, it is likely that it was removed by a mechanism different from that of Cs. The amount of Cs and Sr that the cells could simultaneously retain decreased when compared to that for each element alone, but some strains showed only a slight reduction in removal. For example, Bifidobacterium adolescentis JCM1275 could simultaneously retain 55.7 mg-Cs/g-dry cell and 8.1 mg-Sr/g-dry cell. These results demonstrated the potentials of utilizing complex biological system in simultaneous removal of multiple metal species.

Eco-friendly and cost-effective adsorbent derived from blast furnace slag with black liquor waste for hazardous remediation

The current investigation concerns with preparation eco-friendly and cost-effective adsorbent (mesoporous silica nanoparticles (SBL)) based on black liquor (BL) containing lignin derived from sugarcane bagasse and combining it with sodium silicate derived from blast furnace slag (BFS) for thorium adsorption. Thorium ions were adsorbed from an aqueous solution using the synthesized bio-sorbent (SBL), which was then assessed by X-ray diffraction, BET surface area analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Th(IV) sorption properties, including the pH effect, uptake rate, and sorption isotherms across various temperatures were investigated. The maximum sorption capacity of Th(IV) on SBL is 158.88 mg/L at pH value of 4328 K, and 60 min contact time. We demonstrated that the adsorption processes comport well with pseudo-second-order and Langmuir adsorption models considering the kinetics and equilibrium data. According to thermodynamic inspections results, the Th(IV) adsorption process exhibited endothermic and random behavior suggested by positive ΔH° and ΔS° values, while the negative ΔG° values indicated a spontaneous sorption process. The maximum Th(IV) desorption from the loaded SBL (Th/SBL) was carried out at 0.25 M of NaHCO3 and 60 min of contact. Sorption/desorption processes have five successive cycles. Finally, this study suggests that the recycling of BFS and BL can be exploited for the procurement of a promising Th(IV) adsorbents.

Green synthesis trends and potential applications of bimetallic nanoparticles towards the sustainable development goals 2030

The world faces threats that the United Nations has classified into 17 categories with different objectives as solutions for each challenge that are enclosed in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These actions involved the widespread use of science and technology as pathways to ensure their implementation. In this regard, sustainability science seeks the research community's contribution to addressing sustainable development challenges. Specifically, nanotechnology has been recognized as a key tool to provide disruptive and effective strategies to reach the SDGs. This review proposes the application of bimetallic nanoparticle substances capable of providing possible solutions to achieve target SDG 3: good health and well-being, SDG 6: clean water and sanitation, and SDG 12: responsible consumption and production. Furthermore, the term green nanotechnology is introduced in each section to exemplify how green synthesized bimetallic nanoparticles have been used to resolve each target SDG. This review also outlines the current scenario regarding the utilization of metallic nanomaterials in the market, together with the upscaling challenges and the lack of understanding of the long-term effects and hazards to the environment regarding bimetallic nanoparticles.

Kinetic properties of 137Cs uptake by the cesium-accumulating eustigmatophycean microalga

Cesium-137 (¹³⁷Cs) is one of the radioactive substances that was released into the environment as a result of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Radiocesium exposure is of great concern due to its potential environmental implications. However, research on ¹³⁷Cs removal using algae is still limited. This is the first report to describe the kinetic properties of ¹³⁷Cs uptake by Vacuoliviride crystalliferum in the presence and absence of potassium. In this work, we studied the kinetic properties of ¹³⁷Cs uptake using a freshwater microalga, V. crystalliferum (NIES 2860). We also analyzed the effects of temperature, light, and potassium (K) on the ¹³⁷Cs uptake. Results showed that V. crystalliferum can remove up to 90% of 157 nM ¹³⁷Cs within an hour. At 20 °C, the removal increased by up to 96%, compared to less than 10% at 5 °C. However, the removal was inhibited by nearly 90% in the dark compared to the removal in the light, implying that V. crystalliferum cells require energy to accumulate ¹³⁷Cs. In the inhibition assay, K concentrations ranged from 0 to 500 µM and the inhibitory constant (K_i) for K was determined to be 16.7 µM. While in the uptake assay without potassium (- K), the Michaelis constant (K_m) for Cs was 45 nM and increased to 283 nM by the addition of 20 µM potassium (+ K), indicating that V. crystalliferum had a high affinity for ¹³⁷Cs. In addition, the maximum uptake velocity (V_max) also increased from 6.75 to 21.10 nmol (mg Chl h)^-1, implying the existence of Cs active transport system. In conclusion, V. crystalliferum is capable of removing radioactive ¹³⁷Cs from the environment and the removal was favorable at both normal temperature and in the light.

Enhanced removal efficiency of sulfamethoxazole by acclimated microalgae: Tolerant mechanism, and transformation products and pathways

This study utilized sulfamethoxazole (SMX) acclimatization to enhance the tolerance and biodegradation capacity of Chlorella vulgaris. Compared to wild C. vulgaris, the growth inhibition and oxidative damage induced by SMX evidently decreased in acclimated C. vulgaris, and meanwhile photosynthetic and antioxidant activities were significantly promoted. The physiological analyses with the aid of principal component analysis revealed the increase of catalase and glutathione reductase activities was the critical tolerant mechanism of acclimated C. vulgaris. As the consequence, the acclimated C. vulgaris exhibited enhanced efficiency and (pseudo-first-order) kinetic rate for removal of SMX. The distribution analysis of residual SMX demonstrated the biodegradation was the major removal mechanism of SMX by C. vulgaris, while bioadsorption and bioaccumulation made pimping contributions. During the degradation process of SMX, nine transformation products (TPs) were identified. Based on the identified TPs, a possible transformation pathway was proposed.

Two newly identified Haematococcus strains efficiently accumulated radioactive cesium over higher astaxanthin production

In this study, we investigated the morphological, genomic and bioaccumulation characteristics of two isolated Haematococcus strains (namely Goyang and Sogang), which were newly discovered in South Korea. Morphological analysis revealed that the isolated strains were unicellular and bi-flagellated green microalgae that formed thickened walls at the palmelloid or red-cyst phase. Phylogenetic analysis of 18S rRNA and rbcL gDNA sequences demonstrated that both strains were taxonomically related to the genus Haematococcus. The two strains showed growth pattern that was similar to a typical Haematococcus strain, and accumulated astaxanthin within 48 h of exposure to intensive light. Both red-cyst cells effectively removed radioactive cesium to more than 50% within 48 h from low-level cesium-contaminated water of 5 Bq/ml concentration. The cesium-accumulation mechanism is largely associated with the replacement of cellular potassium in thick cell walls during biouptake, and the cesium-removal rate highly depends on the corresponding astaxanthin accumulation involving the potassium-transporting protein (P-type ATPase).

Cesium Removal from Nonexpandable Illite Clay by Chloride Salt Treatment

Extracting cesium (Cs) from nonexpandable illite clay is important in the remediation of radioactive Cs-contaminated soil. In this study, we investigated a chloride salt treatment technique for the removal of Cs from illite. Cs-loaded illite samples with initial Cs concentrations of 2430 and 690 ppm were treated using a NaCl-MgCl₂-CaCl₂ ternary salt system at 400-850 °C under ambient pressure to suppress Cs loss by vaporization. As a result of the treatment at 850 °C, wherein the salt was in a molten state, the Cs concentration was reduced by 99.5% (to 11.6 ppm) in the first sample and by 99.4% (to 3.86 ppm) in the second sample. Cs removal was achieved for these two samples even in a solid-state reaction at 400 °C, with reductions of 83.3% (407 ppm) and 73.3% (184 ppm), respectively. CsCl was formed by the reaction and remained stable in the salt. The incorporation of cations from the salt (mainly Mg²⁺) to illite induced structural evolution forming an indialite phase to expel Cs from the clay samples.

Impact of magnetic immobilization on the cell physiology of green unicellular algae Chlorella vulgaris

Cell immobilization on the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and magnetic harvesting is a novel approach for microalgal cells separation. To date, the effect of these nanoparticles on microalgal cells was only studied over a short period of time. More studies are hence needed for a better understanding of the magnetic harvesting proposes or environmental concerns relating to long-term exposure to nanoparticles. In this study, the impact of various concentrations of MNPs on the microalgal cells growth and their metabolic status was investigated over 12 days. More than 60% reduction in mitochondrial activity and pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids) content occurred during the first 6 days of exposure to ≥50 µg/mL nanoparticles. However, more than 50% growth inhibitory effect was seen at concentrations higher than 400 µg/mL. Exposure to MNPs gradually induced cellular adaptation and after about 6 days of exposure to stress generating concentrations (˂400 µg/mL) of IONs, microalgae could overcome the imposed damages. This work provides a better understanding regarding the environmental impact of MNPs and appropriate concentrations of these particles for future algal cells magnetic immobilization and harvesting.
