Inverted organic solar cells with non-clustering bathocuproine (BCP) cathode interlayers obtained by fullerene doping

Two-Dimensional Metal Halide Perovskites Created by Binary Conjugated Organic Cations for High-Performance Perovskite Photovoltaics

Studies indicated that two-dimensional (2D) metal halide perovskites (MHPs) embodied with three-dimensional (3D) MHPs were a facile way to realize efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and perovskite photodetectors (PPDs). Here, high-performance PSCs and PPDs, which are based on 2D/3D MHPs bilayer thin films, where the 2D MHPs are created by binary conjugated organic cations, are reported. Systemically studies reveal that the above novel 2D/3D MHPs bilayer thin films possess an enlarged crystal size, balanced charge transport, reduced charge carrier recombination, smaller charge-transfer resistance, and accelerated charge-extraction process compared to the 2D/3D MHPs bilayer thin films, where the 2D MHPs are created by a single conjugated organic cation. As a result, the PSCs based on the above novel 2D/3D MHPs bilayer thin film exhibit a power conversion efficiency of 22.76%. Moreover, unencapsulated PSCs possess dramatically enhanced stability compared with those based on the 2D/3D MHPs bilayer thin films, where the 2D MHPs are created by a single conjugated organic cation. In addition, the PPDs based on the above novel 2D/3D MHPs bilayer thin film exhibit a projected detectivity of 1016 cm Hz1/2/W and a linear dynamic range of 108 dB at room temperature. Our studies indicate that the development of binary conjugated organic cation-based 2D MHPs incorporated with 3D MHPs is a simple method to realize high-performance PSCs and PPDs.

Impact of solvents on doctor blade coatings and bathocuproine cathode interlayer for large-area organic solar cell modules

Efforts to commercialize organic solar cells (OSCs) by developing roll-to-roll compatible modules have encountered challenges in optimizing printing processes to attain laboratory-level performance in fully printable OSC architectures. In this study, we present efficient OSC modules fabricated solely through printing methods. We systematically evaluated the impact of processing solvents on the morphology of crucial layers, such as the hole transport, photoactive, and electron transport layers, applied using the doctor blade coating method, with a particular focus on processability. Notably, deposition of charge transport layer using printing techniques is still a challenging task, mainly due to the hydrophobic characteristic of the organic photoactive layer. To overcome this issue, we investigated the solvent effect of a well-studied cathode interlayer, bathocuproine (BCP). We were able to form a uniform thin BCP film (∼10 nm) on a non-fullerene based organic photoactive layer using the doctor bladed coating method. Our results showed that the use of volatile alcohols in the BCP processing required a delicate balance between wettability and vaporization, which contrasted with the results for spin-coated films. These findings provide important insights into improving the efficiency of printing techniques for depositing charge transport layers. The fully printed OSC modules, featuring uniform and continuous BCP layer formation, achieved an impressive power conversion efficiency of 10.8% with a total area of 10.0 cm2 and a geometrical fill factor of 86.5%.

Understanding the PEDOT:PSS, PTAA and P3CT-X Hole-Transport-Layer-Based Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of metal-oxide-based regular perovskite solar cells have been higher than 25% for more than 2 years. Up to now, the PCEs of polymer-based inverted perovskite solar cells are widely lower than 23%. PEDOT:PSS thin films, modified PTAA thin films and P3CT thin films are widely used as the hole transport layer or hole modification layer of the highlyefficient inverted perovskite solar cells. Compared with regular perovskite solar cells, polymer-based inverted perovskite solar cells can be fabricated under relatively low temperatures. However, the intrinsic characteristics of carrier transportation in the two types of solar cells are different, which limits the photovoltaic performance of inverted perovskite solar cells. Thanks to the low activation energies for the formation of high-quality perovskite crystalline thin films, it is possible to manipulate the optoelectronic properties by controlling the crystal orientation with the different polymer-modified ITO/glass substrates. To achieve the higher PCE, the effects of polymer-modified ITO/glass substrates on the optoelectronic properties and the formation of perovskite crystalline thin films have to be completely understood simultaneously.

High voltage vacuum-processed perovskite solar cells with organic semiconducting interlayers

In perovskite solar cells, the choice of appropriate transport layers and electrodes is of great importance to guarantee efficient charge transport and collection, minimizing recombination losses. The possibility to sequentially process multiple layers by vacuum methods offers a tool to explore the effects of different materials and their combinations on the performance of optoelectronic devices. In this work, the effect of introducing interlayers and altering the electrode work function has been evaluated in fully vacuum-deposited perovskite solar cells. We compared the performance of solar cells employing common electron buffer layers such as bathocuproine (BCP), with other injection materials used in organic light-emitting diodes, such as lithium quinolate (Liq), as well as their combination. Additionally, high voltage solar cells were obtained using low work function metal electrodes, although with compromised stability. Solar cells with enhanced photovoltage and stability under continuous operation were obtained using BCP and BCP/Liq interlayers, resulting in an efficiency of approximately 19%, which is remarkable for simple methylammonium lead iodide absorbers.

The effect of n-type interlayers and electrodes on the voltage and stability of fully vacuum-deposited perovskite solar cells is evaluated.
