Porous ionic liquid polymer: A reusable adsorbent with broad operating pH range for speciation of nitrate and nitrite

Synthesis of imidazolium ionic liquid immobilized on magnetic mesoporous silica: A sorbent material in a green micro-solid phase extraction of multiclass pesticides in water

In this study, we synthesized an imidazolium ionic liquid immobilized on magnetic mesoporous silica (IL-MMS) and evaluated its performance as a sorbent material for a green micro-solid phase extraction (μ-SPE) of multiclass pesticides in water. The synthesized IL-MMS was characterized by various analytical techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) analyses (N2 adsorption/desorption), Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Our synthesized IL-MMS demonstrated excellent magnetic properties (31.5 emu/g), high surface area (1177.4 m2/g), proper pore size (⁓4.2 nm) and volume (1.80 cm3/g). Under optimized extraction conditions, the IL-MMS exhibited a high adsorption capacity for a variety of pesticides, including organophosphates, carbamates, and pyrethroids. The proposed μ-SPE method using IL-MMS showed good linearity (R2 > 0.99), low limits of detection (LODs) ranging from 0.04 to 1.63 ng/L, and suitable recovery rate was between 82.4% and 109.8% for different pesticides. In addition, the method also exhibited excellent reproducibility, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of less than 8% for both intra and inter-day precision. In overall, the synthesized IL-MMS has proven to be a highly promising material for sorbent-based micro-solid phase extraction (μ-SPE) of multiclass pesticides in water. With its simple, efficient, and eco-friendly approach to pesticide analysis, this method shows great potential for future pesticide detection and monitoring efforts due to its sensitivity, accuracy, and adaptability to various environmental conditions.

Temperature Responsive Copolymers Films of Polyether and Bio-Based Polyamide Loaded with Imidazolium Ionic Liquids for Smart Packaging Applications

Temperature-responsive materials are highly interesting for temperature-triggered applications such as drug delivery and smart packaging. Imidazolium Ionic Liquids (ILs), with a long side chain on the cation and a melting temperature of around 50 °C, were synthetized and loaded at moderate amounts (up to 20 wt%) within copolymers of polyether and a bio-based polyamide via solution casting. The resulting films were analyzed to assess their structural and thermal properties, and the gas permeation changes due to their temperature-responsive behavior. The splitting of FT-IR signals is evident, and, in the thermal analysis, a shift in the glass transition temperature (Tg) for the soft block in the host matrix towards higher values upon the addition of both ILs is also observed. The composite films show a temperature-dependent permeation with a step change corresponding to the solid-liquid phase change in the ILs. Thus, the prepared polymer gel/ILs composite membranes provide the possibility of modulating the transport properties of the polymer matrix simply by playing with temperature. The permeation of all the investigated gases obeys an Arrhenius-type law. A specific permeation behavior, depending on the heating-cooling cycle sequence, can be observed for carbon dioxide. The obtained results indicate the potential interest of the developed nanocomposites as CO₂ valves for smart packaging applications.

Application of radiation grafted waste polypropylene fabric for the effective removal of Cu (II) and Cr (III) ions

This study focuses on the adsorption of hazardous Cr (III) and Cu (II) ions from aqueous solution by applying modified waste polypropylene (PP) fabric as an adsorbent. Pre-irradiation technique was performed for grafting of sodium styrene sulfonate (SSS) and acrylic acid (AAc) onto the PP fabric. The monomer containing 8% SSS and 16% AAc in water was used. Graft yield at 30 kGy radiation dose was 390% when 4% NaCl was added as additive. The prepared adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). The influences of different parameters including pH, contact time, temperature and initial metal ion concentration were also investigated. The equilibrium adsorption data were better fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model with maximum monolayer adsorption capacity 384.62 mg/g for Cr (III) and 188.68 mg/g for Cu (II) ions. The kinetic data were better explained by pseudo first-order kinetic model having good matching between the experimental and theoretical adsorption capacity. The adsorption process was spontaneous, endothermic and thermodynamically feasible. Furthermore, investigation of desorption of metal ions and reuse of the adsorbent suggesting that the adsorbent is an efficient and alternative material in the removal of Cr (III) and Cu (II) from aqueous media.

Innovative extraction materials for fiber-in-tube solid phase microextraction: A review

Fiber-in-tube solid-phase microextraction (fiber-in-tube SPME) with short capillary longitudinally packed with fine fibers as extraction device allows direct coupling to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) systems to determine weakly volatile or thermally labile compounds. This technique associates the advantages of miniaturized and analytical on-line systems. Major achievements include the use of different capillaries (fused-silica, copper, stainless steel, polyetheretherketone (PEEK), or poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE)) that are packed with neat fibers (Zylon®, silk, or Kevlar 29®) or fibers (stainless steel, basalt, or carbon) functionalized with selective coatings (aerogels, ionic liquids (ILs), polymeric ionic liquids (PILs), molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), layered double hydroxides (LDHs), or conducting polymer). This review outlines the fundamental theory and the innovative extraction materials for fiber-in-tube SPME-HPLC systems and highlights their main applications in environmental and bioanalyses.

Poly (deep eutectic solvents) as a new class of sustainable sorbents for solid phase extraction: application for preconcentration of Pb (II) from food and water samples

A new class of polymeric sorbents based on deep eutectic solvents (DESs) is introduced. These materials are obtained from simple and inexpensive precursors via an energy-efficient process. The primary benefit of these sorbents is that they possess the unique characteristics of DESs and porous materials simultaneously. Moreover, the possibility of tailoring deep eutectic solvents allows designing a specific polymer for a desired analyte, based on its physical and chemical properties. In this work, the deep eutectic solvent of tetrabutylammonium bromide and acrylic acid (1:2 molar ratio) was prepared and then polymerized under solventless condition. The synthesized polymer was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller analysis (BET) to evaluate the properties of the sorbent. The poly (TBAB-2AA DES) was applied as a selective sorbent for preconcentration of lead from food and water samples prior to its quantification by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS). Variable factors affecting the extraction were optimized, and under the optimum conditions, the calibration plot was linear in the range 5.0-250.0 μg L^-1. The relative standard deviation was (for n = 5) (RSD) < 3%. The limit of detection (LOD) and the enhancement factor were found to be 2.0 μg L^-1 and 50, respectively. Finally, the accuracy of the method was assessed by comparison of the results with those obtained by direct determination of lead using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and spiked real samples. The obtained recoveries were between 92 and 106%. Graphical abstract.
