Abstract
The sympathetic nervous responses to cold stress are known; however, concurrent cardiovascular and ocular parameter alterations in the responses are poorly characterized. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of the cold pressor test (CPT) on cardiovascular and ocular parameters in young adult subjects. There was a total of 86 participants. The CPT was conducted by submerging each participant's left hand in cold water (3-5 °C) for 3 min. During the CPT, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure (MAP), and heart rate were found to be significantly increased compared to the baseline and significantly decreased compared to recovery, including the mean of the standard deviations of all normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN). In the recovery phase, the SDNN continued to decrease statistically significantly compared to the baseline and the CPT. Furthermore, the findings of this study show that the CPT impacted intra-ocular pressure (IOP), ACD, and pupil size parameters. There was a positive correlation between the MAP and IOP in both eyes during the CPT. The cold stress stimulates a sympathetic response, leading to an increase in the MAP. The pupil size increased in response to the CPT in both eyes, indicating that ocular function was increased in response to the CPT in young adults compared to baseline. In conclusion, our results suggest that in young adults, cardiovascular and ocular parameters respond to the sympathetic nervous system during the CPT.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify factors associated with the development of epiretinal membranes (ERM) in glaucoma patients. DESIGN Multicenter, propensity-score matched, case-control study. METHODS One hundred ninety-two eyes of 192 patients with glaucoma from the Catholic Medical Center Glaucoma Suspect Cohort Study were analyzed. We identified 64 eyes who developed ERM from the cohort, and 128 eyes without ERM were selected by propensity score matching (1:2) according to baseline age and mean deviation (MD) of the visual field (VF). Demographic, systemic, and ocular characteristics were determined at baseline. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured, including baseline, mean IOP, and IOP fluctuation. Early-stage ERM, defined as translucent membrane with no underlying retinal distortion, was detected by fundus photography and optical coherence tomography. Central VF progression was considered when new VF defets developed in one either or both hemifields or when there was an increase of 3 or more abnormal points within 12 points of central 10° fixation. Autonomic nervous system status was evaluated by heart rate variability. RESULTS Patients who developed ERM were more frequently receiving medication for systemic hypertension and had higher systolic blood pressure, greater IOP fluctuation, more frequent disc hemorrhage (DH), worse VF MD, and a higher rate of central VF progression than patients without ERM. Additionally, patients with early glaucoma who developed ERM had higher rate of autonomic imbalance while patients with moderate-to-advanced glaucoma who developed ERM had greater baseline and peak IOP and worse MD of the last follow-up VF (MD < 6.0 dB). Older age (P = .048), medication for systemic hypertension (P < .001), IOP fluctuation (P < .001), presence of DH (P < .001), and worse last MD of VF (P = .033) were significantly associated with ERM in Cox proportional hazard analysis. CONCLUSIONS Early stage of ERMs in glaucomatous eyes are significantly associated with glaucoma progression, medication of systemic hypertension, presence of DH, and IOP fluctuation. These suggest that glaucoma patients who develop early stage of ERMs should be carefully monitored in terms of IOP fluctuation, vascular factors, and glaucoma progression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the association of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) with autonomic dysfunction by assessing the differences in systemic and ocular responses to an autonomic provocation test, the Valsalva manoeuvre (VM), between POAG patients and normal subjects. METHODS Forty POAG and forty control subjects were subjected to the VM. Systemic and ocular parameters were measured at baseline, phase 2, and phase 4 of the VM (VM2 and VM4), where VM2 and VM4 are sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous activation states, respectively. Heart rate variability was used to assess the autonomic nervous activity, among which the high-frequency component (HF) and the low-frequency (LF)/HF ratio were used as indices of parasympathetic and sympathetic activation, respectively. RESULTS POAG patients demonstrated higher sympathetic activation (LF/HF ratio median: 2.17 vs. 1.53, P=0.000) than controls at baseline and exhibited attenuated sympathetic and parasympathetic responses (a smaller change in LF/HF and HF values) during the VM than controls. During VM, the intraocular pressure (IOP), mean blood pressure (MAP), mean ocular perfusion pressure (MOPP), and the Schlemm's canal area (SCAR) increased from baseline to VM2 and then decreased from VM2 to VM4 in both the POAG and control groups (all P<0.05). However, when we compared the changes above, the fluctuations in IOP, MAP, and MOPP were more pronounced in POAG than in controls (all P<0.05), while the changes in amplitudes of SCAR were smaller in POAG (P<0.05). Furthermore, from VM2 to VM4, the choroid thickness (ChT) in the POAG group was significantly decreased, while it was unchanged in normal subjects (P=0.258). A regression analysis showed a significant correlation of the baseline LF/HF with IOP change values (ΔIOP) from baseline to VM2 in POAG (R2=0.147, P=0.014). CONCLUSION Patients with POAG showed more pronounced fluctuations in IOP, MAP, MOPP and ChT during the VM than controls. These reactions could be associated with autonomic dysfunction in POAG.

Abstract
Background and objectives: We aimed to evaluate the effects of the water drinking test (WDT) on several systemic and ocular parameters, including choroidal thickness, which was assessed through optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), in glaucoma suspects. Materials and Methods: A total of 40 eyes from 20 glaucoma suspects without any systemic or ocular diseases were included in this prospective observational study. All the participants undertook the WDT, which required the drinking of 1 L of table water in 5 min. The outcome measures included IOP, systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), mean ocular perfusion pressure (MOPP), ocular pulse amplitude (OPA), and subfoveal and peripapillary choroidal thickness, which were assessed at baseline and at four 15 min intervals after the WDT. Generalized least squares models and mixed model analyses that take into account repeated measurements were used to assess the changes over time of these parameters. Results: All the ocular and systemic parameters showed statistically significant changes at all time points compared to baseline apart from choroidal thickness. The peak changes were an IOP of 20.1 mmHg versus 17.3 mmHg at 45 min, an SBP of 137.6 mmHg versus 125 mmHg at 30 min, a DBP of 95.9 mmHg versus 85.7 mmHg at 15 min, and an MOP of 53.51 mmHg versus 48.89 mmHg at 15 min. Conclusions: Despite elevations in IOP and significant changes in all the assessed systemic parameters, the WDT was not associated with changes in choroidal thickness in glaucoma suspects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing evidence shows that circRNA plays an essential regulatory role in diseases through interactions with disease-related miRNAs. Identifying circRNA-disease associations is of great significance to precise diagnosis and treatment of diseases. However, the traditional biological experiment is usually time-consuming and expensive. Hence, it is necessary to develop a computational framework to infer unknown associations between circRNA and disease. RESULTS In this work, we propose an efficient framework called MSPCD to infer unknown circRNA-disease associations. To obtain circRNA similarity and disease similarity accurately, MSPCD first integrates more biological information such as circRNA-miRNA associations, circRNA-gene ontology associations, then extracts circRNA and disease high-order features by the neural network. Finally, MSPCD employs DNN to predict unknown circRNA-disease associations. CONCLUSIONS Experiment results show that MSPCD achieves a significantly more accurate performance compared with previous state-of-the-art methods on the circFunBase dataset. The case study also demonstrates that MSPCD is a promising tool that can effectively infer unknown circRNA-disease associations.

COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy among Adolescents: Cross-Sectional School Survey in Four Chinese Cities Prior to Vaccine Availability. Vaccines (Basel) 2022; 10:vaccines10030452. Abstract
To address the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, development and regulatory evaluations have been accelerated for vaccines, authorizing emergency use. To anticipate vaccine preparedness in adolescents, we studied COVID-19 vaccination awareness and willingness to vaccinate before the vaccine became available. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 9153 (4575 boys, 50%) students with a mean age of 14.2 years old in four cities in China to collect information on demographic characteristics and their COVID-19 vaccination concerns. Multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze the influencing factors of vaccine hesitancy (“not sure”) and resistance (“do not want it”). The results showed that 2891 (31.6%) were hesitant and 765 (8.4%) were resistant to being vaccinated. Additionally, multivariable analyses showed that vaccine hesitancy and vaccine resistance were associated with living in the Beijing area (OR = 1.62; 95% CI: 1.40–1.88; OR = 1.81; 95% CI: 1.44–2.28), lack of influenza vaccination experience (OR = 1.33; 95% CI: 1.14–1.55; OR = 1.57; 95% CI: 1.25–1.98), no perceived susceptibility (OR = 1.72; 95% CI: 1.50–1.97; OR = 3.57; 95% CI: 2.86–4.46), and perceiving no cues to action (OR = 3.24; 95% CI: 2.56–4.11; OR = 27.68; 95% CI: 21.81–35.13). Postulating a highly effective vaccine (OR = 0.84; 95% CI: 0.72–0.98; OR = 0.66; 95% CI: 0.52–0.83) decreased both vaccine hesitancy and resistance. Vaccine hesitancy alone was associated with girls (OR = 1.21; 95% CI: 1.09–1.36) and was less common among students boarding at school (OR = 0.79; 95% CI: 0.68–0.92), postulating convenient vaccine access (OR = 0.84; 95% CI: 0.73–0.96), and having doctors’ recommendation (OR = 0.86; 95% CI: 0.76–0.98). In conclusion, the results of the study showed that vaccine hesitancy among students in China was associated with limited health literacy and lower risk awareness. Our findings in China suggest that educating youth regarding COVID-19 and the safety and effectiveness of immunization help reduce concerns and increase vaccine confidence and acceptance.

Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of keratoplasty on the in vivo anatomical structures in the Schlemm's canal (SC) of nonglaucomatous subjects using Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT). Methods: Sixty-six nonglaucomatous eyes that underwent penetrating keratoplasty (PK), deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), or triple surgery were enrolled in this prospective, comparative, observational study. The SC imaging was performed using FD-OCT before and after surgery in both the nasal and temporal quadrants. Patient demographics, SC parameters [e.g., cross-sectional area (CSA), meridional diameter of SC (MSC), sagittal diameter of SC (SSC), and circumference (CCF)], and the correlations between the variation of SC parameters and intraocular pressure (IOP) were analyzed. Results: The mean age of all subjects was 40.27 ± 18.97 years. Among all cases, the nasal, temporal, and mean MSC significantly decreased on the first day after surgery and then increased at 1 week (p = 0.04, 0.017, and 0.01, respectively). Temporal CSA (tCSA), temporal MSC (tMSC), and temporal circumference (tCCF) after PK (p = 0.017, 0.020, and 0.018, respectively) and nasal MSC (nMSC) after DALK (p = 0.025) decreased significantly on the first day after surgery. The shift in mean IOP was significantly correlated with the changes in tMSC (r = 0.341, p = 0.003) and CCF (r = 0.207, p = 0.048). Conclusion: SC had significant in vivo morphological changes in the early period after keratoplasty in nonglaucomatous eyes, accompanied with elevation of IOP. Early intervention might be necessary to prevent secondary glaucoma early after keratoplasty.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effects of mental stress stimulus on intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement and visual field (VF) testing. METHODS Patients with open angle glaucoma underwent a baseline IOP measurement and VF testing. Afterwards, they completed a computerized mental stress test (Stroop test) which is a known standardized method to induce mental stress. After test completion, patients underwent a second IOP measurement and VF testing. RESULTS Seventy-two eyes of 36 patients were enrolled. Mean age was 67.0 ± 9.5 years (range 47-84 years). The mean baseline IOP was 15.0 mmHg, and after the Stroop mental stress test, IOP increased to 16.0 mm Hg (P < 0.001). There was a trend towards significant mean deviation decreased from -6.9 dB to -8.0 dB (P = 0.054, t-test) following the stress test. This difference became significant using the Wilcoxon nonparametric test (P = 0.008). Correlation was found between glaucoma severity and change in IOP (P = 0.02) and PSD (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS We found a small but statistically significant increase in IOP and a trend towards deterioration of visual field mean deviation, following a short mental stress test. Patients with more severe glaucoma showed more pronounced changes. Our results suggest that mental stress could affect IOP measurement in the clinic.

Abstract
PURPOSE The water drinking test (WDT) is a well-known stress test that increases intraocular pressure (IOP) momentarily and can indicate risk of glaucoma progression. This study focuses on correlating changes in the retinal microvascular plexus with the WDT in young healthy subjects. METHODS A total of 20 eyes of 20 healthy young subjects (mean age 24.37 ± 2.17 years) were included in this study. In our protocol, WDT consisted of drinking 1 L of water within 5 min. Outcome measures in this prospective observational study were mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), IOP, and retinal vessel density of both superficial and deep macular retina using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), which were assessed before water ingestion and four times after at 15-min intervals. OCTA images were later quantified by fractal analysis (box counting [Dbox]). One-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to assess the effects of WDT on each of the parameters. RESULTS The WDT resulted in significant peak changes of the following parameters compared to baseline: IOP: 15.63 ± 3.37 versus 18.38 ± 4.53 mmHg at 30 min, p < 0.001; HR: 75.74 ± 12.23 versus 64.95 ± 11.37 bpm at 15 min, p < 0.001; deep retinal vessel density 1.758 ± 0.14 versus 1.749 ± 0.16 at 15 min, p = 0.040. CONCLUSIONS Besides IOP elevation and systemic effects in HR, WDT is associated with temporary modifications of the deep vascular plexus in young healthy subjects.

Abstract
Abstract. A field study was carried out in an optometry clinic, aimed at assessing the role of perceived control and aversiveness of non-contact tonometry in intraocular pressure (IOP) reactivity to psychosocial stressors, and analyzing the covariation with cardiovascular and affective reactivity. Forty-four customers volunteered to participate in the study. Perceived control (self-efficacy and threat) was assessed at the onset. IOP, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, affect, and aversiveness of the IOP measurement procedure were assessed throughout five phases with a mean duration for each phase of 9 min: arrival, optometry, baseline, stressor task (speech in public task), and recovery. The results suggest that IOP decreases over time and the stressor task induced a remarkable reactivity in all the physiological variables assessed. The interaction between self-efficacy and threat partially explains individual variability in IOP: a high threat combined with a high self-efficacy yielded higher reactivity in IOP or increased tonic values throughout the phases. The aversiveness of the measurement procedure did not affect IOP. Intraocular Pressure (IOP) is reactive to social stressors and perceived control partially explains individual variability. Cardiovascular and IOP reactivity are parallel phenomena but do not share a common regulatory mechanism.
