Preparation of porous materials by selective enzymatic degradation: effect of in vitro degradation and in vivo compatibility

Advancing Nanofiber Research: Assessing Nonsolvent Contributions to Structure Using Coaxial Electrospinning

In this study, we explored the influence of molecular interactions and solvent evaporation kinetics on the formation of porous structures in electrospun nanofibers, utilizing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polystyrene (PS) as model polymers. The coaxial electrospinning technique was employed to control the injection of water and ethylene glycol (EG) as nonsolvents into polymer jets, demonstrating its potential as a powerful tool for manipulating phase separation processes and fabricating nanofibers with tailored properties. Our findings highlighted the critical role of intermolecular interactions between nonsolvents and polymers in governing phase separation and porous structure formation. Additionally, we observed that the size and polarity of nonsolvent molecules affected the phase separation process. Furthermore, solvent evaporation kinetics were found to significantly impact phase separation, as evidenced by less distinct porous structures when using a rapidly evaporating solvent like tetrahydrofuran (THF) instead of dimethylformamide (DMF). This work offers valuable insights into the intricate relationship between molecular interactions and solvent evaporation kinetics during electrospinning, providing guidance for researchers developing porous nanofibers with specific characteristics for various applications, including filtration, drug delivery, and tissue engineering.

Fabrication of SiC Porous Ceramics by Foaming Method

In this work, hierarchically porous SiC ceramics were prepared via the foaming method. Porous ceramics with tunable, uniform, and bimodal pore structures were successfully fabricated in a facile way. The formation mechanisms of the 1st and 2nd modal macropores are the H₂O₂ foaming process and SiC particle overlap, respectively. The effect of pore-foaming agent amount, foaming temperature, and surfactant was investigated. According to the results, with increasing H₂O₂ amount, the porosity, pore size, and interconnectivity of the 1st modal pores increased, whereas bulk density and strength decreased. The porosity increased while the strength decreased as the foaming temperature increased. Surfactants increased pore interconnectivity and porosity. When the foaming temperature was 85 °C, and the addition of H₂O₂ was 5 wt.%, the porosity, bulk density, flexural strength, and compressive strength were 56.32%, 2.8301 g/cm³, 11.94 MPa, and 24.32 MPa, respectively. Moreover, SiC porous ceramics exhibited excellent corrosion resistance to acids and alkalis.

Various Simulated Body Fluids Lead to Significant Differences in Collagen Tissue Engineering Scaffolds

This study aims to point out the main drawback with respect to the design of simulated body environments. Three media commonly used for the simulation of the identical body environment were selected, i.e., Kokubo’s simulated body fluid that simulates the inorganic component of human blood plasma, human blood plasma, and phosphate buffer saline. A comparison was performed of the effects of the media on collagen scaffolds. The mechanical and structural effects of the media were determined via the application of compression mechanical tests, the determination of mass loss, and image and micro-CT analyses. The adsorption of various components from the media was characterized employing energy-dispersive spectrometry. The phase composition of the materials before and after exposure was determined using X-ray diffraction. Infrared spectroscopy was employed for the interpretation of changes in the collagen secondary structure. Major differences in terms of the mechanical properties and mass loss were observed between the three media. Conversely, only minor structural changes were detected. Since no general recommendation exists for selecting the simulated body environment, it is necessary to avoid the simplification of the results and, ideally, to utilize alternative methods to describe the various aspects of degradation processes that occur in the media.
