Entangled nematic disclinations using multi-particle collision dynamics

Colloids dispersed in nematic liquid crystals form topological composites in which colloid-associated defects mediate interactions while adhering to fundamental topological constraints. Better realising the promise of such materials requires numerical methods that model nematic inclusions in dynamic and complex scenarios. We employ a mesoscale approach for simulating colloids as mobile surfaces embedded in a fluctuating nematohydrodynamic medium to study the kinetics of colloidal entanglement. In addition to reproducing far-field interactions, topological properties of disclination loops are resolved to reveal their metastable states and topological transitions during relaxation towards ground state. The intrinsic hydrodynamic fluctuations distinguish formerly unexplored far-from-equilibrium disclination states, including configurations with localised positive winding profiles. The adaptability and precision of this numerical approach offers promising avenues for studying the dynamics of colloids and topological defects in designed and out-of-equilibrium situations.

Chiral Liquid Crystalline Properties of Cellulose Nanocrystals: Fundamentals and Applications

By using an independent self-assembly process that is occasionally controlled by evaporation, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) may create films (pure or in conjunction with other materials) that have iridescent structural colors. The self-forming chiral nematic structures and environmental safety of a new class of photonic liquid crystals (LCs), referred to as CNCs and CNC-embedded materials, make them simple to make and treat. The structure of the matrix interacts with light to give structural coloring, as opposed to other dye pigments, which interact with light by adsorption and reflection. Understanding how CNC self-assembly constructs structures is vital in several fields, including physics, science, and engineering. To constructure this review, the colloidal characteristics of CNC particles and their behavior during the formation of liquid crystals and gelling were studied. Then, some of the recognized applications for these naturally occurring nanoparticles were summarized. Different factors were considered, including the CNC aspect ratio, surface chemistry, concentration, the amount of time needed to produce an anisotropic phase, and the addition of additional substances to the suspension medium. The effects of alignment and the drying process conditions on structural changes are also covered. The focus of this study however is on the optical properties of the films as well as the impact of the aforementioned factors on the final transparency, iridescent colors, and versus the overall response of these bioinspired photonic materials. Control of the examined factors was found to be necessary to produce reliable materials for optoelectronics, intelligent inks and papers, transparent flexible support for electronics, and decorative coatings and films.

Newtonian Event-Chain Monte Carlo and Collision Prediction with Polyhedral Particles

Polyhedral nanocrystals are building blocks for nanostructured materials that find applications in catalysis and plasmonics. Synthesis efforts and self-assembly experiments have been assisted by computer simulations that predict phase equilibria. Most current simulations employ Monte Carlo methods, which generate stochastic dynamics. Collective and correlated configuration updates are alternatives that promise higher computational efficiency and generate trajectories with realistic dynamics. One such alternative involves event-chain updates and has recently been proposed for spherical particles. In this contribution, we develop and apply event-chain Monte Carlo for hard convex polyhedra. Our simulation makes use of an improved computational geometry algorithm XenoSweep, which predicts sweep collision in a particularly simple way. We implement Newtonian event chains in the open-source general-purpose particle simulation toolkit HOOMD-blue for serial and parallel simulation. The speedup over state-of-the-art Monte Carlo is between a factor of 10 for nearly spherical polyhedra and a factor of 2 for highly aspherical polyhedra. Finally, we validate the Newtonian event-chain algorithm by applying it to a current research problem, the multistep nucleation of two classes of hard polyhedra.

Supramolecular Aggregates: Hardness Plus Softness

The properties of supramolecular aggregates cross several disciplines, embracing the sciences of nature and joining theory, experiment, and application. There are few articles centering on the problems of interdisciplinarity, and this paper gives an alternative approach, starting with scientific divulgation, bringing concepts from their origin, to facilitate the access of young scientists to the scientific content. Didactic examples are taken from the experience of the author in changing directions of research due to several circumstances of life (including maternity), starting from the view of a rigorous student of physics and evolving to several subjects in chemistry. The scientific part starts with concepts related to nuclear interactions, using the technique of neutron scattering in reactors, and evolves to research in molecular physics. Finally, it arrives at the academic context, with research in condensed matter physics, with X-ray and other techniques, starting with detergents forming nematic lyotropic liquid crystals and the phase transition sequence of isotropic to nematics to hexagonal. The scientific subjects evolved to biological and bio-inspired liquid crystals, including DNA and also specific lipids and phospholipids in biomimetic membranes. Special attention is given to the question of distribution of matter in these complex systems and the non-trivial connections between biochemistry, structures, auto-aggregation, and biology.
