Nighttime warming and nitrogen addition effects on the microclimate of a freshwater wetland dominated by Phragmites australis

The critical impacts of microclimate on carbon (C) cycling have been widely reported. However, the potential effects of global change on wetland microclimate remain unclear, primarily because of the absence of field manipulative experiment in inundated wetland. This study was designed to examine the effects of nighttime warming and nitrogen (N) addition on air, water, and sediment temperature and also reveal the controlling factors in a Phragmites australis dominated freshwater wetland on the North China Plain. Nighttime warming increased daily air, water, and sediment temperature by 0.24 °C, 0.27 °C, and 0.36 °C, respectively. The diurnal temperature range of water was decreased by 0.44 °C under nighttime warming, whereas warming had no effect on diurnal temperature range of air and sediment. In addition, N addition caused a reduction of 0.20 °C and 0.14 °C in daily water and sediment temperature by increasing vegetation coverage. There was a significant interaction between nighttime warming and N addition on water temperature. Furthermore, the vapor pressure deficit is the main factor affecting the extent of the warming-induced increases in air temperature. The changes of height and leaf area index of Phragmites australis are responsible for the cooling effects in the N addition plots. This study provides empirical evidence for the positive climate warming - microclimate feedback in freshwater wetland. However, N deposition leads to decreased water and sediment temperature. Our findings highlight the importance of incorporating the differential impacts of nighttime warming and N addition on air, water, and sediment temperature into the predictions of wetland C cycling responses to climate change.

Effects of Climate Change on Forest Regeneration in Central Spain

The Mediterranean climate has dry and hot summers, which is harsh for plants, especially seedlings. During the 1950s and 1960s, most reforestations carried out in Central Spain, a Mediterranean climate area, were successful, but in recent decades an increasing difficulty in forest regeneration has been observed, often attributed to increased summer drought. This study analyses changes in climatic parameters related to forest regeneration through statistical treatment of meteorological data series from the mid-twentieth century to the present. Simple and multiple regressions and ANOVAs were performed for five parameters, considering annual, summer and extended summer values. Rainfall reduction and prolongation of the summer drought period were not statistically significant. The change that better explains regeneration problems is the increase in temperature, especially in July and August, which was mostly significant between 2002 and 2021. Raising temperatures increase the vapor pressure deficit, exacerbating drought effects and plant mortality. Climate change scenarios point to an increase in temperatures until 2100; thus, the tipping point for natural regeneration of some species could be passed. The most affected species are those at their ecological limit. It is necessary to facilitate the adaptation of these forests to climate change, since their future will depend on the actions carried out today.

Grassland productivity response to droughts in northern China monitored by satellite-based solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has been applied to a wide range of ecological studies, such as monitoring and assessing drought, vegetation productivity, and crop yield. Previous studies have shown that SIF is highly related to gross primary production (GPP), but its correlation with aboveground biomass (AGB) still needs further exploration. In this study, we explored the potential of SIF for monitoring and assessing the effects of climate change and meteorological drought on grassland AGB changes in the northern grassland of China. By examining the relationship between the Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO-2) SIF and drought indices, we assessed the response of northern grassland productivity to meteorological drought conditions. The results show that SIF is very sensitive to meteorological drought and can capture drought events and the dynamics of grassland growth in different grassland types. The correlation between SIF, drought indices, and AGB varied with grassland type. A gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) was used to explore the relationships between SIF and the impact variables in the grassland ecosystem. We found that climatic factors (e.g., annual mean growing season precipitation, annual mean growing season temperature, and annual mean vapor pressure deficit) and human activity (e.g., grazing intensity) significantly impacted the interannual variability of grassland productivity. Our results indicate that SIF changes can reflect the seasonal dynamics of vegetation growth in the northern grassland of China. Therefore, SIF can be used as benchmark data for evaluating the performance of terrestrial ecosystem models in simulating ecosystem productivity in this region. The high sensitivity of SIF to drought suggests that it is a useful tool for monitoring and assessing drought events.
