XPS and structural studies of Fe3O4-PTMS-NAS@Cu as a novel magnetic natural asphalt base network and recoverable nanocatalyst for the synthesis of biaryl compounds

Magnetic superhydrophobic cellulose nanofibril based aerogel with rope-ladder like structure incorporating both superelasticity and excellent oil absorption

Achieving an equilibrium between exceptional oil absorption and remarkable elasticity has emerged as a formidable challenge for magnetic porous materials designed for oil absorption. Here, we propose an original, magnetic and superhydrophobic cellulose nanofibril (CNF) based aerogel system with a rope-ladder like skeleton by to greatly improve the issue. Within this system, CNF as the skeleton was combined with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT)@Fe3O4 as the magnetic and enhanced component, both methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and acetonitrile-extracted lignin (AEL) as the soft-hard associating constituents. The resultant CNF based aerogel shows a rope-ladder like pore structure to contribute to high elasticity and excellent oil absorption (28.34-61.09 g/g for various oils and organic solvents) under the synergistic effect of Fe3O4@MWCNT, AEL and MTMS, as well as good specific surface area (27.97 m2/g), low density (26.4 mg/cm3). Notably, despite the introduced considerable proportion (0.5 times of mass-CNF) of Fe3O4@MWCNT, the aerogel retained an impressive compression-decompression rate (88%) and the oil absorption efficiency of above 87% for various oils due to the soft-hard associating structure supported by both MTMS and AEL. This study provides a prospective strategy to balance between high elasticity and excellent oil absorption of CNF based aerogel doping inorganic particles.

Ultrasmall Mn-doped iron oxide nanoparticles with dual hepatobiliary and renal clearances for T1 MR liver imaging

Although magnetic nanoparticles demonstrate significant potential as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents, their negative contrasts, liver accumulation, and limited excretion hinder their application. Herein, we developed ultrasmall Mn-doped iron oxide nanoparticles (UMIOs) with distinct advantages as T1 MRI contrast agents. Exceptionally small particle sizes (ca. 2 nm) and magnetization values (5 emu gMn+Fe-1) of UMIOs provided optimal T1 contrast effects with an ideally low r2/r1 value of ∼1. Furthermore, the use of Mn as a dopant facilitated hepatocyte uptake of the particles, allowing liver imaging. In animal studies, UMIOs exhibited significantly enhanced contrasts for sequential T1 imaging of blood vessels and the liver, distinguishing them from conventional magnetic nanoparticles. UMIOs were systematically cleared via dual hepatobiliary and renal excretion pathways, highlighting their safety profile. These characteristics imply substantial potential of UMIOs as T1 contrast agents for the accurate diagnosis of liver diseases.

Design and synthesis of hierarchical MnO-Fe3O4@C/expanded graphite composite for sensitive electrochemical detection of bisphenol A

Hierarchically nanostructured binary transition metal oxide-based materials with high conductivity and catalytic activity are quite attractive for the electrochemical quantitative detection of environmental pollutants due to their natural abundance, variable oxidation state, and excellent synergies between metal sites. Herein, a new hierarchical MnO-Fe3O4@C/expanded graphite (EG) composite is designed and synthesized through a simple and in situ annealing method with the utilization of bimetallic organic framework (FeMn-MOF)/EG precursor. The synthesized MnO-Fe3O4@C/EG composite possesses a unique hierarchical nanoarchitecture that small-sized bimetallic oxide nanoparticles of 10-40 nm completely encapsulated by amorphous carbon layers of 2-4 nm are uniformly distributed on the EG platform. This distinctive structure combines the advantages of high conductivity, excellent catalytic activity, and strong stability. Resultantly, when it is applied to monitor environmental endocrine disruptors, the sensor exhibits a significant catalytic effect on the electrochemical oxidation of bisphenol A (BPA), inducing an amplified response current. In addition, the sensor shows a wide linear range of 1-50 μM and 50-400 μM for the BPA monitor, giving a sensitivity of 5208.8 and 1641.9 μA mM-1 cm-2, respectively. This study offers a new approach to design hierarchical binary metal oxide-based sensing materials as well as to explore their electrochemical properties and applications for the determination of emerging contaminants.

Catalytic PMS oxidation universality of CuFe2O4/MnO2 heterojunctions at multiple application scenarios

The magnetic CuFe2O4/MnO2 heterojunctions were prepared by hydrothermal method, and the effect of different reaction temperature on the physicochemical properties and catalytic activity was investigated. The CuFe2O4/MnO2 heterojunctions prepared at 100 °C can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) at multiple application scenarios for degradation and mineralization of tetracycline, o-nitrophenol and ceftriaxone sodium under indoor light, visible light and dark condition. Additionally, the CuFe2O4/MnO2-PMS system showed high catalytic activity and anti-interference ability for degradation of pharmaceutical pollutants in natural water bodies and industrial wastewater. The TC removal efficiency in Qianhu Lake water, Ganjiang River water and tap water was about 88%, 92% and 89%, respectively. The CuFe2O4/MnO2-PMS system is also effective for actual pharmaceutical wastewater treatment with 77.9% of COD removal efficiency. Interestingly, the reactive species of CuFe2O4/MnO2-PMS system under visible light are different from those in dark condition, and the different catalytic mechanisms at multiple application scenarios were proposed. This work provides new insights into mechanism exploration of heterojunction catalyst for PMS activation.

Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2 based on magnetic solid phase extraction for determination of organic UV filters in environmental water samples

In this work, a nanocomposite structured magnetic metal-organic framework named as Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2 was prepared via a simple hydrothermal approach. The as-mentioned nanocomposite was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) techniques. Using the Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2 as a nanosorbent, an easy and highly effective approach was developed to preconcentrate nine organic UV filters before gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Different conditions influencing the extraction efficiency encompassing the sorbent amount, nature and volume of desorption solvent, desorption time, pH of the sample, and extraction time, were examined. Under the optimal experimental parameters, the Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2-based magnetic solid phase extraction and GC-MS (MSPE-GC-MS) demonstrated linearity in the range of 0.03-1500 ng/L (R2 ≥ 0.9974) and the reproducibility, expressed as RSD, was ≤7.5%. The limits of detection ranged between 0.01 and 0.07 ng/L and limits of quantification were in the range of 0.03-0.4 ng/L. Finally, the suggested approach was satisfactorily utilized to determine nine organic UV filters in different water samples (analytical recoveries between 86.5% and 104.2%).

Nature-Inspired Biomolecular Corona Based on Poly(caffeic acid) as a Low Potential and Time-Stable Glucose Biosensor

Herein, we present a novel biosensor based on nature-inspired poly(caffeic acid) (PCA) grafted to magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles with glucose oxidase (GOx) from Aspergillus niger via adsorption technique. The biomolecular corona was applied to the fabrication of a biosensor system with a screen-printed electrode (SPE). The obtained results indicated the operation of the system at a low potential (0.1 V). Then, amperometric measurements were performed to optimize conditions like various pH and temperatures. The SPE/Fe3O4@PCA-GOx biosensor presented a linear range from 0.05 mM to 25.0 mM, with a sensitivity of 1198.0 μA mM-1 cm-2 and a limit of detection of 5.23 μM, which was compared to other biosensors presented in the literature. The proposed system was selective towards various interferents (maltose, saccharose, fructose, L-cysteine, uric acid, dopamine and ascorbic acid) and shows high recovery in relation to tests on real samples, up to 10 months of work stability. Moreover, the Fe3O4@PCA-GOx biomolecular corona has been characterized using various techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Bradford assay.

Silver Natural Asphalt Sulfonate (NA-SO3Ag): Fabrication and Utilization as a New Heterogeneous, Carbonaceous, and Retrievable Nanocatalyst for C(sp2)-X (X = C, S, and Se) Bond Formation

Silver-based catalysts are valuable catalysts in various areas of the chemical industry, organic syntheses, and transformations, and from a chemical and industrial point of view, their recycling is very important. Herein, silver natural asphalt sulfonate (NA-SO3Ag) was fabricated via the grafting of Ag(I) on the surface of the solid natural asphalt sulfonate as a novel and efficient recoverable sliver nanocatalyst. Natural asphalt is one of the hydrocarbons that are found in mineral veins. The structure of NA-SO3Ag was characterized by diverse microscopic and spectroscopic techniques including Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) techniques. The NA-SO3Ag nanocatalyst was utilized for C-Se and C-S bond formation via coupling reactions of aryl halides and organic disulfides/diselenides to afford a wide variety of diaryl sulfides/selenides in good to excellent yields. Additionally, the utilization of NA-SO3Ag in C-C bond formation was examined in Suzuki coupling reactions successfully. For at least 6 trials, this heterogeneous catalyst can be separated and reused without any activity reduction.

Effective removal of azithromycin by novel g-C3N4/CdS/CuFe2O4 nanocomposite under visible light irradiation

In this study, the visible light active pristine, binary and ternary g-C₃N₄/CdS/CuFe₂O₄ nanocomposite is prepared through a coprecipitation-assisted hydrothermal technique. The characterization of the as-synthesized catalysts was conducted using various analytical techniques. When compared with pristine and binary nanocomposites, the ternary g-C₃N₄/CdS/CuFe₂O₄ nanocomposite exhibits higher photocatalytic degradation of azithromycin (AZ) under a visible light source. Ternary nanocomposite exhibits high AZ removal efficiency of about 85% within 90 min of the photocatalytic degradation experiment. Enhanced the visible light absorption ability and the suppression of photoexcited charge carriers is also achieved by forming heterojunctions between pristine materials. The ternary nanocomposite exhibited ∼2 times higher degradation efficiency than CdS/CuFe₂O₄ nanoparticles and ∼3 times higher degradation efficiency than CuFe₂O₄. The trapping experiments were conducted and it shows superoxide radicals (O₂^•-) are the predominant reactive species involved in the photocatalytic degradation reaction. This study provided a promising approach for the treatment of contaminated water using g-C₃N₄/CdS/CuFe₂O₄ as a photocatalyst.

A liposome-based aptasensor integrated with competitive reaction enabling portable and electrochemical detection of Aβ oligomer

Aggregation of β-amyloid (Aβ) were considered as a typical pathological feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Extensive studies have verified that soluble Aβ oligomers (AβO) were more toxic to neurons than plaques. Herein, in this work, a glucose entrapped liposome-based portable aptasensor was fabricated for recognizing and interacting with AβO by specific aptamer on liposome (G-Lip-Apt). Then, a single strand DNA, designed to be partially complementary to AβO aptamer, was modified on amino-functionalized Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ to obtain a magnetic nanocomposite (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/NH₂-DNA). In the presence of AβO, the specific recognition between AβO and its aptamer on G-Lip-Apt made AβO bounded with G-Lip-Apt. With subsequent introduction of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/NH₂-DNA, the unreacted G-Lip-Apt was further linked with Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/NH₂-DNA by double stranded complementary pairing interaction. Along with the addition of TritonX-100 into the formed G-Lip-Apt/Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/NH₂-DNA complex, the encapsulated glucose was released from liposome and then measured by a personal glucose meter (PGM). Good linear correlation was acquired over concentration of 5.0-1000 nM and the limit of detection (LOD) was calculated to be 2.27 nM for AβO. The developed portable electrochemical strategy integrated magnetic separation, competitive reaction and point of care test (POCT) to achieve high sensitivity, selectivity and accuracy, therefore enabled it successfully applied to the analysis of AβO in the hippocampus and cortex of APP/PS1 transgenic AD mice.

Properties and Characterization Techniques of Graphene Modified Asphalt Binders

Graphene is a carbon-based nanomaterial used in various industries to improve the performance of hundreds of materials. For instance, graphene-like materials have been employed as asphalt binder modifying agents in pavement engineering. In the literature, it has been reported that (in comparison to an unmodified binder) the Graphene Modified Asphalt Binders (GMABs) exhibit an enhanced performance grade, a lower thermal susceptibility, a higher fatigue life, and a decreased accumulation of permanent deformations. Nonetheless, although GMABs stand out significantly from traditional alternatives, there is still no consensus on their behavior regarding chemical, rheological, microstructural, morphological, thermogravimetric, and surface topography properties. Therefore, this research conducted a literature review on the properties and advanced characterization techniques of GMABs. Thus, the laboratory protocols covered by this manuscript are atomic force microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic shear rheometer, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Consequently, the main contribution of this investigation to the state-of-the-art is the identification of the prominent trends and gaps in the current state of knowledge.

A multifunctional black phosphorus nanosheet-based immunomagnetic bio-interface for heterogeneous circulating tumor cell capture and simultaneous self-identification in gastric cancer patients

A single epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) for circulating tumor cell (CTCs) isolation has been proved to be low in efficiency as it fails to recognize EpCAM-negative CTCs. Meanwhile, the current immunocytochemical (ICC) identification strategy for the captured cells is tedious and time-consuming. To address these issues, we designed a dual-labeled fluorescent immunomagnetic nanoprobe (BP-Fe₃O₄-AuNR/Apt), by loading magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and gold nanorods (AuNRs) onto black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets and then linking them with Cy3-labeled EpCAM and Texas red-labeled tyrosine protein kinase 7 (PTK7) aptamers, which created a high-performance bio-interface for efficient, heterogeneous CTC capture and rapid self-identification with high accuracy. As few as 5 CTCs could be captured from 1.0 mL PBS, mixed cell solution and lysed blood. What's more, the presence of BP and AuNRs on this capturing interface also allowed us to preliminarily investigate the potential photothermal therapeutic effect of the probe toward CTC elimination. The applicability of the probe was further demonstrated in gastric cancer patients. By detecting the number of CTCs in the blood of gastric cancer patients, the correlations between the CTC number and the disease stage, as well as distant metastasis were systematically explored.

A new copper-supported zinc ferrite as a heterogeneous magnetic nanocatalyst for the synthesis of bis(pyrazolyl)methanes and oxidation of sulfides

In this paper, we report the synthesis of ZnFe₂O₄@SiO₂@APTES@DHBS-Cu as a novel magnetic nanocatalyst, in a mild and green environment. The structure of the described magnetic compound was characterized by different physicochemical techniques including XRD, EDS, AAS, SEM, FT-IR, X-ray elemental mapping, TGA, and VSM analyses. The prepared magnetic nanoparticles exhibit excellent catalytic activity in synthesizing bis (pyrazolyl)methanes and oxidation of sulfide derivatives under green conditions. The heterogeneous nature of the catalyst was confirmed via the hot filtration experiment. Further, ZnFe₂O₄@SiO₂@APTES@DHBS-Cu showed high efficiency and reusability that could be reused for at least five consecutive runs.

A novel lateral flow immunoassay strip based on a label-free magnetic Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2 nanocomposite for rapid detection of Listeria monocytogenes

Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is one of the most lethal pathogenic bacteria. Although the traditional microbial culture method has high sensitivity and selectivity for the diagnosis of L. monocytogenes, it is time-consuming and not suitable for on-site detection. A rapid, convenient and visualized on-site detection method is particularly needed. In this work, Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂ was prepared for both magnetic separation and lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for the detection of L. monocytogenes by taking advantage of the easy separation of the magnetic core Fe₃O₄ and the high surface area of the outer layer UiO-66-NH₂. Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂ with a high surface area and good water-dispersibility and optical properties was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal process. It could directly adsorb on the surface of target bacteria and form Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂-bacteria conjugates, without the labeling of an antibody. After magnetic separation and concentration, the Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂-bacteria conjugates were detected by the antibody on the test line of the LFIA strip, resulting in a visible orange band. The capture efficiency and LFIA detection of Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂ were optimized in this study. Under the optimal conditions, a good linear correlation between the test line intensity and the concentration of L. monocytogenes was obtained in the range of 10⁵-10⁸ CFU mL^-1, and the limit of detection was 2.2 × 10⁶ CFU mL^-1 by the naked eye. The Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂-based LFIA strip showed strong specificity for L. monocytogenes, and the detection took 45 min without culture enrichment. Therefore, the proposed Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂-based strip showed the advantages of simple synthesis, being label-free, low cost, good selectivity and convenience.
