Nitrite isotope characteristics and associated soil N transformations

Facile Construction of CuFe-Based Metal Phosphides for Synergistic NOx -Reduction to NH3 and Zn-Nitrite Batteries in Electrochemical Cell

The electrocatalytic nitrite/nitrate reduction reaction (eNO2RR/eNO3RR) offer a promising route for green ammonia production. The development of low cost, highly selective and long-lasting electrocatalysts for eNO2RR/eNO3RR is challenging. Herein, a method is presented for constructing Cu3P-Fe2P heterostructures on iron foam (CuFe-P/IF) that facilitates the effective conversion of NO2 - and NO3 - to NH3. At -0.1 and -0.2 V versus RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode), CuFe-P/IF achieves a Faradaic efficiency (FE) for NH3 production of 98.36% for eNO2RR and 72% for eNO3RR, while also demonstrating considerable stability across numerous cycles. The superior performance of CuFe-P/IF catalyst is due tothe rich Cu3P-Fe2P heterstuctures. Density functional theory calculations have shed light on the distinct roles that Cu3P and Fe2P play at different stages of the eNO2RR/eNO3RR processes. Fe2P is notably active in the early stages, engaging in the capture of NO2 -/NO3 -, O─H formation, and N─OH scission. Conversely, Cu3P becomes more dominant in the subsequent steps, which involve the formation of N─H bonds, elimination of OH* species, and desorption of the final products. Finally, a primary Zn-NO2 - battery is assembled using CuFe-P/IF as the cathode catalyst, which exhibits a power density of 4.34 mW cm-2 and an impressive NH3 FE of 96.59%.

Microbial nitrogen transformations tracked by natural abundance isotope studies and microbiological methods: A review

Nitrogen is an essential nutrient in the environment that exists in multiple oxidation states in nature. Numerous microbial processes are involved in its transformation. Knowledge about very complex N cycling has been growing rapidly in recent years, with new information about associated isotope effects and about the microbes involved in particular processes. Furthermore, molecular methods that are able to detect and quantify particular processes are being developed, applied and combined with other analytical approaches, which opens up new opportunities to enhance understanding of nitrogen transformation pathways. This review presents a summary of the microbial nitrogen transformation, including the respective isotope effects of nitrogen and oxygen on different nitrogen-bearing compounds (including nitrates, nitrites, ammonia and nitrous oxide), and the microbiological characteristics of these processes. It is supplemented by an overview of molecular methods applied for detecting and quantifying the activity of particular enzymes involved in N transformation pathways. This summary should help in the planning and interpretation of complex research studies applying isotope analyses of different N compounds and combining microbiological and isotopic methods in tracking complex N cycling, and in the integration of these results in modelling approaches.

Contribution of zeolite to nitrogen retention in chicken manure and straw compost: Reduction of NH3 and N2O emissions and increase of nitrate

Co-composting of chicken manure, straw and zeolite was investigated in a water bath heating system to estimate the effect of zeolite on physicochemical properties and metabolic functions related to nitrogen conversion. The results indicated that NH3 catches by zeolite was concentrated in the early stage and zeolite with 10 % addition reduced 28 % NH3 and 55 % N2O emissions as compost ended. The nitrate content in 10 % zeolite group was 17 % higher than that in control group. There was no significant increase of NO2- in zeolite group. More NO2- formed NH3, rather than being converted to NOx through denitrification. The abundance of nitrification genes amoA and hao increased except nxrA in zeolite groups. Denitrification was the most obvious at 20 d and zeolite decreased the abundance of denitrification genes narG, nirK and nosZ at this time.

Triple oxygen stable isotope analysis of nitrite measured using continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry

Oxygen stable isotopes (i.e., 16O, 17O, 18O) of nitrite (NO2-) are useful for investigating chemical processes and sources contributing to this important environmental contaminant and nutrient. However, it remains difficult to quantify the oxygen isotope compositions of NO2- due to the lack of internationally recognized NO2- reference materials with a well-known Δ(17O) value. Here we have adopted a combination of methodologies to develop a technique for measuring Δ(17O) of NO2- by reducing nitrate (NO3-) materials with internationally recognized Δ(17O) values to NO2- using activated cadmium catalyzed by chloride in a basic solution while conserving Δ(17O). The NO3- reference materials reduced to NO2- and sample NO2- unknowns are converted to N2O using sodium azide/acetic acid reagent and decomposed to O2 by passing through a heated gold tube and introduced into a continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometer for analysis at m/z 32, 33, and 34 for Δ(17O) quantification. The adapted method involves the following main points:•NO3- reference materials with internationally recognized oxygen isotope composition are reduced to NO2- under high pH conditions that conserve Δ(17O) values.•The NO3- reference materials reduced to NO2- and sample NO2- with unknown Δ(17O) values are reduced to N2O using chemical methods involving sodium azide/acetic acid.•The product N2O is extracted, purified, decomposed to O2, and analyzed for its isotope composition using a continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometer for Δ(17O) quantification. The Δ(17O) of NO2- samples are calibrated with respect to the NO3- reference materials with known Δ(17O) values.

FRAME-Monte Carlo model for evaluation of the stable isotope mixing and fractionation

Bayesian stable isotope mixing models are widely used in geochemical and ecological studies for partitioning sources that contribute to various mixtures. However, none of the existing tools allows accounting for the influence of processes other than mixing, especially stable isotope fractionation. Bridging this gap, new software for the stable isotope Fractionation And Mixing Evaluation (FRAME) has been developed with a user-friendly graphical interface (malewick.github.io/frame). This calculation tool allows simultaneous sources partitioning and fractionation progress determination based on the stable isotope composition of sources/substrates and mixture/products. The mathematical algorithm applies the Markov-Chain Monte Carlo model to estimate the contribution of individual sources and processes, as well as the probability distributions of the calculated results. The performance of FRAME was comprehensively tested and practical applications of this modelling tool are presented with simple theoretical examples and stable isotope case studies for nitrates, nitrites, water and nitrous oxide. The open mathematical design, featuring custom distributions of source isotope signatures, allows for the implementation of additional processes that alternate the characteristics of the final mixture and its application for various range of studies.
