Abstract
β-Thalassaemia is one of the most common genetic diseases worldwide. During the past few decades, life expectancy of patients has increased significantly owing to advance in medical treatments. Cognitive impairment, once has been neglected, has gradually become more documented. Cognitive impairment in β-thalassaemia patients is associated with natural history of the disease and socioeconomic factors. Herein, to determined effect of β-thalassaemia intrinsic factors, 22-month-old β-thalassaemia mouse was used as a model to assess cognitive impairment and to investigate any aberrant brain pathology in β-thalassaemia. Open field test showed that β-thalassaemia mice had decreased motor function. However, no difference of neuronal degeneration in primary motor cortex, layer 2/3 area was found. Interestingly, impaired learning and memory function accessed by a Morris water maze test was observed and correlated with a reduced number of living pyramidal neurons in hippocampus at the CA3 region in β-thalassaemia mice. Cognitive impairment in β-thalassaemia mice was significantly correlated with several intrinsic β-thalassaemic factors including iron overload, anaemia, damaged red blood cells (RBCs), phosphatidylserine (PS)-exposed RBC large extracellular vesicles (EVs) and PS-exposed medium EVs. This highlights the importance of blood transfusion and iron chelation in β-thalassaemia patients. In addition, to improve patients' quality of life, assessment of cognitive functions should become part of routine follow-up.

Abstract
Advances in understanding the disease process in β-thalassemia supported development of various treatment strategies that resulted in improved survival. Improved survival, however, allowed multiple morbidities to manifest and cemented the need for frequent, lifelong treatment. This has directly impacted patients' health-related quality of life and opened the door for various psychiatric and cognitive disorders to potentially develop. In this review, we summarize available evidence on quality of life, depression and anxiety, suicidality, and cognitive impairment in adult patients with β-thalassemia while sharing our personal insights from experience in treating patients with both transfusion-dependent and non-transfusion-dependent forms.

Abstract
This quasi-experimental study evaluated feasibility and preliminary efficacy of dementia-preventive educational training intervention program based on the health belief model for improving perceived health beliefs and dementia-preventive behaviors among people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Two community hospitals with 72 eligible participants were chosen from 12 local institutions using simple random sampling method. One hospital (22 patients) was allocated to dementia-preventive educational training intervention, and the other hospital (23 patients) was allocated to control intervention (using simple random sampling). Primary study outcome was feasibility, and secondary outcomes were changes in dementia prevention behaviors and health belief perceptions. Recruitment rate was 62.5% (45/72) and 22 patients in each group totally completed outcome measures and attended sessions, indicating feasibility of the intervention and study design. There were no significant differences between groups at baseline. After training, participants in the intervention group had significantly higher scores than control group in prevention behaviors and perceptions of health beliefs. The intervention group experienced significant with-group changes in outcomes. Results show that conducting a subsequent fully powered experimental study is feasible, and the intervention has promising efficacy.

Abstract
To investigate the relationship between the correlation ratios of selenium (Se) and other elements and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among older adults. A total of 1000 individuals participated in our research analysis. The concentrations of elements in whole blood were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to reflect their exposure levels. Participants' cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between elemental ratios and MCI. Se concentration was positively correlated with red blood cell count (r = 0.219, p < 0.001), haemoglobin level (r = 0.355, p < 0.001), haematocrit (r = 0.215, p < 0.001), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (r = 0.294, p < 0.001) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (r = 0.428, p < 0.001) and negatively correlated with red cell volume distribution width-standard deviation (r = -0.232, p < 0.001) and platelet distribution width (r = -0.382, p < 0.001). Compared with the normal group, the ratios of Se/vanadium (V), Se/lead (Pb) and Se/cadmium (Cd) in the whole blood of the MCI group were significantly lower (all p < 0.001), while the ratios of manganese (Mn)/Se and iron (Fe)/Se were higher (all p < 0.001). The increase in the ratios of Se/V, Se/Pb and Se/Cd is related to a decreased risk of MCI among older adults; contrarily, an increase in the ratios of Mn/Se and Fe/Se may be a risk factor for MCI.
