Abstract
BACKGROUND Leukocyte count is a prognostic marker for cardiovascular diseases, with key role in atherosclerosis development. Specific number of neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes can predict cardiovascular risk, also in asymptomatic subjects. Among the lipoprotein fractions, HDL-C is a protective factor in the cardiovascular disorders. For the above reason, we have examined the peripheral count of leukocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes, and the ratios between neutrophils/HDL-cholesterol, lymphocytes/HDL-cholesterol, and monocytes/HDL-cholesterol, to evaluate the possible utility of the obtained values in progression of asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis. METHODS We performed our analysis in a cohort of 100 subjects with asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis, of which 43 men and 57 women. The data were expressed as medians and IQR. To analyse the differences in leukocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocytes count and their ratio with HDL-cholesterol the Mann-Whitney test was employed. RESULTS The peripheral count of leukocyte subtypes and the ratios, they change in relation to the number of cardiovascular risk factors and the degree of insulin resistance. CONCLUSIONS In this cohort of subjects, the percentage of observed cardiovascular risk factors significantly affect some leukocyte parameters. These results, allow us to underline the importance of the leukocyte indices in the evaluation of subjects with asymptomatic vascular atherosclerosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Leukocyte parameters are predicted to be affected in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to study the association between white blood cell parameters (WBC) in people with and without MetS. METHODS PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus and Cochrane Library databases were searched according to the study protocol. The standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of leukocyte markers between individuals with and without MetS were pooled using an inverse variance model. Additionally, a subgroup analysis by sex was performed where possible. Methodological quality assessment was conducted using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS) for observational studies and the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool 2.0 for Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs). RESULTS Of 6068 articles identified, 63 were eligible for the study. Compared to controls, individuals with MetS showed significantly higher concentrations of total leukocyte count (SMD [95% CI]: 0.60 [0.55-0.65]; P < .00001; I2 = 100%), neutrophil counts (0.32 [0.28-0.37]; P < .00001; I2 = 99%), lymphocyte counts (0.15 [0.07-0.23]; P = .0004; I2 = 100%), basophil counts (0.01 [0.00-0.02]; P = .02; I2 = 98%), monocyte counts (0.05 [0.02-0.09]; P = .003; I2 = 99%), and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (0.24 [0.15-0.33]; P < .00001; I2 = 98%). There were no significant differences in the eosinophil count (0.02 [-0.01 to 0.05]; P = .19; I2 = 96%) and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (0.06 [-0.05 to 0.17]; P = .27; I2 = 100%) between patients with and without MetS, however, the lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (0.52 [-0.81 to -0.23]; P = .0005; I2 = 52%) tended to be significantly lower in patients with MetS. CONCLUSION Biomarkers such as total leukocyte count, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, basophil count, monocyte count and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio are associated with higher levels in patients in MetS and thus can potentially be used for early detection of MetS.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS), which is characterized by insulin resistance, high blood glucose, obesity, and dyslipidemia, is known to increase the risk of dementia accompanied by memory loss and depression. The direct pathways and specific mechanisms in the central nervous system (CNS) for addressing fatty acid imbalances in MetS have not yet been fully elucidated. Among polyunsaturated acids, linoleic acid (LA, n6-PUFA) and α-linolenic acid (ALA, n3-PUFA), which are two essential fatty acids that should be provided by food sources (e.g., vegetable oils and seeds), have been reported to regulate various cellular mechanisms including apoptosis, inflammatory responses, mitochondrial biogenesis, and insulin signaling. Furthermore, inadequate intake of LA and ALA is reported to be involved in neuropathology and neuropsychiatric diseases as well as imbalanced metabolic conditions. Herein, we review the roles of LA and ALA on metabolic-related dementia focusing on insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, synaptic plasticity, cognitive function, and neuropsychiatric issues. This review suggests that LA and ALA are important fatty acids for concurrent treatment of both MetS and neurological problems.

Abstract
Introduction Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is a common complication of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Identifying patients at high CIN risk remains challenging. The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index may help predict CIN but evidence is limited. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the diagnostic value of TyG index for CIN after PCI. Methods A systematic literature search was performed in MEDLINE, Cochrane, and EMBASE until August 2023 (PROSPERO registration: CRD42023452257). Observational studies examining TyG index for predicting CIN risk in PCI patients were included. This diagnostic meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the accuracy of the TyG index in predicting the likelihood of CIN. Secondary outcomes aimed to assess the pooled incidence of CIN and the association between an elevated TyG index and the risk of CIN. Results Five studies (Turkey, n=2; China, n=3) with 3518 patients (age range: 57.6 to 68.22 years) were included. The pooled incidence of CIN was 15.3% [95% confidence interval (CI) 11-20.8%]. A high TyG index associated with increased CIN risk (odds ratio: 2.25, 95% CI 1.82-2.77). Pooled sensitivity and specificity were 0.77 (95% CI 0.59-0.88) and 0.55 (95% CI 0.43-0.68) respectively. Analysis of the summary receiver operating characteristic (sROC) curve revealed an area under the curve of 0.69 (95% CI 0.65-0.73). There was a low risk of publication bias (p = 0.81). Conclusion The TyG index displayed a noteworthy correlation with the risk of CIN subsequent to PCI. However, its overall diagnostic accuracy was found to be moderate in nature. While promising, the TyG index should not be used in isolation for CIN screening given the heterogeneity between studies. In addition, the findings cannot be considered conclusive given the scarcity of data. Further large-scale studies are warranted to validate TyG cutoffs and determine how to optimally incorporate it into current risk prediction models. Abstract
Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a group of metabolic abnormalities characterised by central obesity, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, and dysregulation of blood glucose, which is associated with the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and overall mortality. White blood cell count is a selective marker of acute infection and inflammation, which could provide information on the metabolic status of subjects. This study aims to provide the best evidence on the association between MetS and white blood cell count by determining the effect size of this biomarker. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis of studies indexed in the PubMed and Scopus databases were performed. Methodological quality was assessed using the STROBE tool, overall risk of bias using RevMan (Cochrane Collaboration), and quality of evidence using Grade Pro. Results: We included 14 articles comparing leukocyte concentrations in 21,005 subjects with MetS and 66,339 controls. Subjects with MetS had a higher mean leukocyte count, 0.64 cells ×109/L; CI95% 0.55-0.72; p < 0.00001; I2 = 93%. Conclusions: An in-depth evaluation of the relationship of leukocytes in the pathophysiological process of MetS could lead to new insights into early diagnosis.

Abstract
Purpose Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome. This study evaluated the significance of markers such as the triglyceride-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio and TG-glucose (TyG) indices in a group of patients with NAFLD. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the data of patients aged 5-18 years diagnosed with NAFLD between January 2014 and January 2021. Results Among the 151 patients with NAFLD, 79.5% were found to be obese, and the mean TG/HDL-C ratio (3.78±2.54 vs. 3.13±2.24) and TyG index (4.69±0.28 vs. 4.56±0.30) were slightly higher in patients with obesity compared to those without obesity. Patients with severe hepatic steatosis had a significantly higher mean TG/HDL-C ratio (4.11±2.16 vs. 3.11±2.30, p=0.035) than those with mild to moderate steatosis. Severe hepatic steatosis grade was defined as an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the TG/HDL-C ratio of 0.760 (95% confidence interval, 0.544-0.875), with an optimal cutoff value of 3.37. Conclusion A high TG/HDL-C ratio is associated with severe hepatic steatosis and diabetes mellitus in children with NAFLD. Measurement of this ratio can help clinicians in identifying patients and targeting them for treatment and follow-up.

Abstract
PURPOSE Insulin resistance (IR) is common in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Metabolic syndrome (MS) includes, inter alia, IR, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and disturbances in glucose metabolism. The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and non-traditional lipid parameters are strong predictors of IR and cardiovascular disease and can be considered as screening indicators for MS. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive potential of non-traditional lipid parameters and the TyG index to identify MS in PCOS. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 134 women diagnosed with PCOS (50 patients with comorbid MS and 84 patients without MS). Biochemical indices were collected, and triglycerides (TG)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), total cholesterol (TC)/HDL-C, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)/HDL-C, non-HDL-C, TyG, and TyG-BMI indices were calculated. Logistic regression analysis was used to compare and determine the association of the six parameters with MS, and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the performance of each parameter in identifying MS in the PCOS population. RESULTS After adjusting for age and body mass index (BMI), TG/HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, non-HDL-C, TyG, and TyG-BMI were associated with MS (all P<0.05). The odds ratios were 4.075 (0.891, 1.107), 3.121 (1.844, 5.282), 3.106 (1.734, 5.561), 2.238 (1.302, 3.848), 13.422 (4.364, 41.282), and 1.102 (1.056, 1.150), respectively. TG/HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, non-HDL-C, TyG, and TyG-BMI are effective predictors of MS in PCOS, and their cut-off values can be used for the early detection of MS. TyG-BMI had the strongest performance in predicting MS (area under the curve 0.905, 95% CI 0.855-0.956), and its optimal critical value for predicting MS was 202.542. CONCLUSIONS TG/HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, non-HDL-C, TyG, and TyG-BMI are novel, clinically convenient and practical markers for the early identification of MS risk in PCOS patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Strokes significantly impair quality of life and incur high economic and societal burdens. The triglyceride and glucose (TyG) index is a biochemical marker of insulin resistance (IR) and may have important value in the prediction of strokes, especially ischemic stroke (IS). Our study aims to investigate the relationship between TyG index and IS and ascertain whether TyG index is independently associated with IS adverse outcomes. METHODS The Cochrane, Embase, Medline, Web of Science, PubMed, and other relevant English databases and related websites were systematically searched for articles on ''TyG index'' and "stroke" published from inception to April 4, 2022. We reviewed the available literature on the TyG index and its relation to predicting IS occurrence in the general population and adverse clinical outcomes. We calculated odds ratios (OR) of TyG index and its predictability of IS occurrence and adverse outcomes. Statistical analyses were performed using the Meta Package in STATA, version 12.0. RESULTS A total of 18 studies and 592,635 patients were included in our analysis. The pooled effect values of all stroke types showed that higher TyG index was associated with increased the risk of IS in the general population (OR 1.37; 95% CI 1.22-1.54) in a total sample of 554,334 cases with a high level of heterogeneity (P = 0.000, I2 = 74.10%). In addition, compared to IS patients with a lower TyG index, IS patients with a higher TyG index was associated with higher risk of stroke recurrence (OR: 1.50; 95% CI 1.19-1.89) and increased risk of mortality (OR 1.40 95% CI 1.14-1.71). No correlation was found in the effect value combinations of poor functional outcomes (OR 1.12; 95% CI 0.88-1.43) and neurological worsening (OR: 1.76; 95% CI 0.79-3.95) in a total sample of 38,301 cases with a high level of heterogeneity (P = 0.000; I2 = 77.20%). CONCLUSIONS TyG index has potential value in optimizing risk stratification for IS in the general population. Furthermore, there is a significant association between high TyG index and many adverse outcomes of stroke, especially stroke recurrence and high mortality. Future studies should focus on multi-center and multi-regional designs in order to further explore the relationship between IS and TyG index.

Abstract
Background The association between white blood cells (WBCs) and metabolic syndrome (MS) has been consistently reported in previous studies using regional samples. However, it remains unclear whether this relationship has urban-rural differences and is independent of insulin resistance using a large-scale representative sample. Additionally, accurate risk prediction in patients with MS is crucial for developing targeted interventions to enhance the quality of life and prognosis of patients. Aims The aims of this study were (1) to examine the cross-sectional association between WBCs and MS among the national population and analyze the urban-rural difference and whether insulin resistance plays a moderator effect in this association and (2) to describe the performance to predict MS using machine learning (ML) models. Design A cross-sectional study was performed using 7,014 data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). Methods WBCs were analyzed using an automatic hematology analyzer and MS was defined according to the criteria of the American Heart Association scientific statements of 2009. Variables on sociodemographic characteristics (sex, age, and residence), clinical laboratory (BMI and HOMA-IR), and lifestyle characteristics (smoking and drinking status) were used to construct ML models to predict MS [logistic regression (LR) and multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network]. Results We found that 21.1% of participants (1,479/7,014) were classified as having MS. In multivariate logistic regression (including insulin resistance), the result revealed a significant positive association between WBCs and MS. The odds ratios (95% CI) for MS with increasing WBC level were 1.00 (reference), 1.65 (1.18, 2.31), and 2.18 (1.36, 3.50) (p for trend: 0.001). For two ML algorithms, two models showed adequate calibration and good discrimination, but the MLP showed better performance (AUC-ROC = 0.862 and 0.867). Conclusion With the aim of confirming the association between WBCs and MS, this cross-sectional study is the first to show that maintaining normal WBC count levels is helpful to prevent the development of MS, and this association is independent of insulin resistance. The results also showed that the MPL algorithm represented a more prominent predictive performance to predict MS.

Abstract
Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a global health problem. White blood cell (WBC), neutrophils and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are valid indicators involved in acute and chronic inflammation. The aims of our study were to analyze the correlation and severity of these indicators with MetS and its components, and explore the diagnostic value of their combined tests for MetS. Methods A total of 7726 subjects were recruited, and laboratory biomarkers were collected. The differences of indicators between MetS group and non-MetS group were analyzed. The linear trend between each indicator and the increasing number of metabolic disorders was analyzed using trend variance test. The correlation between each indicator and MetS with its components was analyzed by logistic regression. Results The levels of WBC, neutrophil, and hemoglobin grew significantly in the MetS group compared to non-MetS group, and gradually increased with the increased number of MetS disorders. Logistic regression analysis indicated significant correlations between WBC, neutrophils, and hemoglobin with MetS and its components. ROC curve analysis showed WBC, neutrophils, and hemoglobin served as good predictors for MetS, especially in adults aged under 40. Conclusion Our study indicated that WBC, neutrophils, and hemoglobin are efficient indicators for predicting MetS and evaluate its severity.

Abstract
Background Metabolic syndrome is a critical health concern associated with an elevated risk of chronic health problems including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. There are shreds of evidence that novel inflammatory ratios including neutrophil-to-lymphocyte, platelet-to-lymphocyte and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratios serve as prognostic biomarkers for metabolic syndrome (MetS). This hypothesis was investigated in a cohort of the Iranian population. Methods selection of MetS + subjects was based on the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria 3 (NCEP ATP 3). The control group consisted of participants negative for any of the five MetS criteria. Demographic and laboratory data were extracted from the Tabari cohort study. Results A total of 1930 subjects including 965 Mets positive and 965 MetS criteria negative participants were evaluated. Diabetes (84.8%), hypertension (48.9%), hypertriglyceridemia (81.7%), low HDL cholesterol (70.3%), and high waist circumference (78.9%) were observed in patients. There were no differences between NLR (1.66±0.71 vs. 1.69±0.72 P=0.42), LMR (11.23±3.13 vs. 11.30±11.99, P= 0.86) and PLR (113.85±68.67 vs 114.11±35.85, P=0.91) between case and control groups, respectively. Logistic regression analysis revealed no association between ratios and MetS risk even after adjusting for potential confounders including age, gender, living place, and BMI. Conclusion In a relatively large population from Northern Iran, no association was observed between CBC-derived inflammatory ratios and the presence of MetS.

Abstract
Over half of patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are unable to achieve blood glucose targets despite therapeutic compliance, significantly increasing their risk of long-term complications. Discovering ways to identify and properly treat these individuals is a critical problem in the field. The arachidonic acid metabolite, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), has shown great promise as a biomarker of β-cell dysfunction in T2D. PGE2 synthesis, secretion, and downstream signaling are all upregulated in pancreatic islets isolated from T2D mice and human organ donors. In these islets, preventing β-cell PGE2 signaling via a prostaglandin EP3 receptor antagonist significantly improves their glucose-stimulated and hormone-potentiated insulin secretion response. In this clinical cohort study, 167 participants, 35 non-diabetic, and 132 with T2D, were recruited from the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. At enrollment, a standard set of demographic, biometric, and clinical measurements were performed to quantify obesity status and glucose control. C reactive protein was measured to exclude acute inflammation/illness, and white cell count (WBC), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and fasting triglycerides were used as markers of systemic inflammation. Finally, a plasma sample for research was used to determine circulating PGE2 metabolite (PGEM) levels. At baseline, PGEM levels were not correlated with WBC and triglycerides, only weakly correlated with ESR, and were the strongest predictor of T2D disease status. One year after enrollment, blood glucose management was assessed by chart review, with a clinically-relevant change in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) defined as ≥0.5%. PGEM levels were strongly predictive of therapeutic response, independent of age, obesity, glucose control, and systemic inflammation at enrollment. Our results provide strong support for future research in this area.

Abstract
In a cohort of subjects with asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis (ACA), we have evaluated the neutrophil and lymphocyte count and their ratio (NLR), the gelatinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2). At baseline, no difference was observed between ACA subjects and subject control group regarding neutrophil and lymphocyte count while was evident in ACA subjects a significant increase in MMP-2, MMP-9 and TIMP-2 associated to a significant decrease in TIMP-1. Dividing the ACA according to the number of cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) we have observed an increase in lymphocyte count in the subgroup with 3-5 CRFs. Evaluating the leukocyte subtypes according to all the surrogate markers of insulin resistance has been noted, in the subgroups that exceed the medians of these markers, a significant increase in neutrophil and lymphocyte count without any variation of the NLR. Effecting the same evaluation for the MMP/TIMP pattern we observed, instead, that the same subgroups tend to show a decrease in MMP-2 and an increase in MMP-9. No difference instead for TIMP-1 and TIMP-2. The abnormality of the MMP/TIMP pattern, bearing in mind the cardiometabolic clustering present in this cohort of ACA subjects, would induce to use drugs able not only to cure the cardiometabolic risk factors but also to influence the MMP/TIMP profile.

Abstract
The severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) quickly progresses with unfavorable outcomes due to the host immune response and metabolism alteration. Hence, we hypothesized that leukocyte glucose index (LGI) is a biomarker for severe COVID-19. This study involved 109 patients and the usefulness of LGI was evaluated and compared with other risk factors to predict COVID 19 severity. LGI was identified as an independent risk factor (odds ratio [OR] = 1.727, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.026-3.048, P = 0.041), with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.749 (95% CI: 0.642-0.857, P < 0.0001). Interestingly, LGI was a potential risk factor (OR = 2.694, 95% CI: 1.575-5.283, Pcorrected < 0.05) for severe COVID-19 in female but not in male patients. In addition, LGI proved to be a strong predictor of the severity in patients with diabetes (AUC = 0.915 (95% CI: 0.830-1), sensitivity = 0.833, and specificity = 0.931). The AUC of LGI, together with the respiratory rate (LGI + RR), showed a considerable improvement (AUC = 0.894, 95% CI: 0.835-0.954) compared to the other biochemical and respiratory parameters analyzed. Together, these findings indicate that LGI could potentially be used as a biomarker of severity in COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The metabolic syndrome (Mets) is a multiplex risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. The aims of the study were to assess the association of the Mets with TyG index and TyG-related parameters in an urban Chinese population. METHODS The data were collected in 1992 and then again in 2007 from the same group of 590 individuals (363 males and 227 females) without Mets in 1992. The fasting lipid profile and blood glucose were measured. TyG index and related parameters were calculated, and Mets defined according to the harmonized criteria. The area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic curves was used to evaluate TyG index and related parameters for their diagnostic ability to identify people with Mets. Odd ratios (OR) for Mets prediction were calculated using stepwise logistic regression analyses. RESULTS The incidence of Mets was 18.64% over the 15-year follow-up period.During 15 years' follow-up, TyG-waist to height ratio (TyG-WHtR) shows the largest AUC for Mets detection (0.686) followed by TyG-waist circumference (TyG-WC) (0.660), TyG-waist-to-hip ratio (TyG-WHpR) (0.564), and TyG index (0.556) in all participants. Gender analysis revealed that TyG-WHtR and TyG-WC have the largest AUC in both genders. TyG-WHtR significantly predicted Mets in all participants, with an unadjusted odds ratio of 5.63 (95% CI 3.23-9.83 P < 0.001). Associations remained significant after adjustment for smoking, drinking, physical exercise and components of Mets. CONCLUSIONS TyG-WHtR might be a strong and independent predictor for Mets in all participants in an urban Chinese population. TyG-related markers that combine obesity markers with TyG index are superior to other parameters in identifying Mets in both genders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The triglyceride glucose (TyG) index reflects insulin resistance; the latter being associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). OBJECTIVE To investigate the clinical value of the TyG index to identify MCI in patients living with type 2 diabetes (T2D) using a cross-sectional study. METHODS This cross-sectional study was performed on 517 patients with T2D. The diagnosis of MCI was based on criteria established by the National Institute on Aging-Alzheimer's Association workgroup, and patients were divided into the MCI group and the normal cognitive function (NCF) group. The logistic regression analysis determines whether the TyG index is related to MCI. Subsequently, we constructed the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and calculated the area under the curve (AUC). The nomogram model of the influence factor was established and verified. RESULTS Compared to the type 2 diabetes-normal cognitive function (T2D-NCF) group, the MCI subjects were olderand had higher TyG indexes, lower cognitive scores, and lower education levels (p < 0.01). After adjusting for the confounders, the TyG index was associated with MCI (OR = 7.37, 95% CI = 4.72-11.50, p < 0.01), and TyG-BMI was also associated with MCI (OR = 1.02, 95% CI = 1.01-1.02, p<0.01). The TyG index AUC was 0.79 (95% CI = 0.76-0.83). The consistency index of the nomogram was 0. 83[95% CI (0. 79, 0. 86)]. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that the TyG index and TyG-BMI are associated with MCI in T2D patients, and the TyG index is an excellent indicator of the risk of MCI in T2D patients. The nomogram incorporating the TyG index is useful to predict MCI risk in patients with T2D.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We herein aim to explore the relationship between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and metabolic syndrome (MS). METHODS We enrolled 298,652 individuals with an average age of 47.08 ± 12.94 years and who underwent health check-ups at the First Affiliated Hospital of Wuhu Wannan Medical College in this cross-sectional study from 2014 to 2016. We enlisted 125,025 women (41.86%) and 173,627 men (58.14%). The survey information included a questionnaire survey, a physical examination, and a laboratory examination. RESULTS The prevalence of MS increased gradually in the TyG-index subgroups (Q1, TyG <8.30; Q2, 8.30≤ TyG <8.83; and Q3, TyG ≥8.83). We noted significant differences in hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, sex, age, body mass index (BMI), smoking and drinking habits, and estimated glomerular filtration rate between the TyG-index subgroups. Multiclass logistic regression analysis showed that the group with TyG <8.30 was the reference group, and the 8.30≤ TyG <8.83 and the TyG ≥8.83 groups exhibited a higher TyG index with MS, and a lower TyG index without MS disease. In the linear curve analysis of the TyG index and MS components, BMI, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure showed upward trends, while high-density lipoprotein cholesterol showed no obvious trend in the TyG index at a range of 7.8-11.0. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to evaluate the predictive value of the TyG index, triglycerides, and fasting blood glucose for MS, and we found that the area under the TyG index curve was the largest (AUC = 0.89). CONCLUSION There were associations between the TyG index and MS and its components, and the TyG index is therefore of great value in the early diagnosis of MS.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study aimed to investigate the relationship between 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH) D] and triglyceride glucose index (TyG) levels in male and female patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). PATIENTS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study recruited 592 patients with type 2 diabetes. The subjects were divided into the non-vitamin D deficiency group [25(OH)D≥20ng/mL] and the vitamin D deficiency group [25(OH)D<20ng/mL]. The triglyceride glucose (TyG) index is calculated using the following formula, ln[fasting triglycerides (mg/dL)*fasting blood glucose (mg/dL)/2]. Participants were divided into high TyG group and low TyG group, with the median of TyG as the boundary. All participants were divided into male and female groups and normal Body mass index (BMI) and high BMI groups, and then divided into high TyG group and low TyG group. RESULTS We found that TyG levels are independently and negatively correlated with vitamin D levels in male patients with T2DM. In the female group, there was no significant correlation between TyG and vitamin D levels, regardless of an adjusted or unadjusted confounding factor. Subgroup analysis showed that the correlation between TyG and the risk of vitamin D deficiency in the normal BMI group was significantly stronger than that in the high BMI group. CONCLUSION This study indicates that vitamin D deficiency is related to high TyG level in patients with T2DM for males, and this relationship is not significant for female patients. The risk of vitamin D deficiency is significantly correlated with high TyG level in normal BMI group. However, there was no statistically significant difference between TyG level and the risk of vitamin D deficiency in the high BMI group. Abstract
Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the TyG index in the occurrence of periodontitis among the United States (US) population. Methods We analyzed clinical data from 4813 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2009 to 2014. the TyG index was calculated as ln [fasting triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting glucose (mg/dL)/2]. Dose-response curves, univariate and multivariate logistic analyses were used to analyze the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) between TyG index and periodontitis. In addition, we performed 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) for periodontitis and no periodontitis participants to further explore the relationship between TyG and periodontitis. Results A total of 4813 participants were included in our study, of which 1353 (28.1%) reported periodontitis and 3460 (71.9%) no periodontitis. The dose-response curves showed a non-linear positive association between TyG and periodontitis, with the risk of periodontitis increased with increasing TyG. In addition, similar results were still observed after subgroup analysis and PSM analysis. After adjusting for confounding variables, multivariate logistic analysis showed that TyG was associated with an increased risk of periodontitis (aOR =1.153; 95% CI 1.006-1.322, p=0.034). Conclusion Elevated TyG index was significantly associated with a high risk of periodontitis, and people with a high TyG index should be aware of the risk of periodontitis progression in order to establish lifestyle changes at an early stage.

Abstract
Background Recent studies have substantiated the role of the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index in predicting the prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients, while no relevant studies have revealed the association between the TyG index and coronary collateralization in the event of coronary chronic total occlusion (CTO). The current study intends to explore whether, or to what extent, the TyG index is associated with impaired collateralization in CAD patients with CTO lesions. Methods The study enrolled 1093 CAD patients undergoing cardiac catheterization for at least one CTO lesion. Data were collected from the Beijing Anzhen Hospital record system. The degree of collaterals was determined according to the Rentrop classification system. The correlation between the TyG index and coronary collateralization was assessed. Results Overall, 318 patients were included in a less developed collateralization (Rentrop classification 0-1) group. The TyG index was significantly higher in patients with impaired collateralization (9.3±0.65 vs. 8.8±0.53, P<0.001). After adjusting for various confounding factors, the TyG index remained correlated with the occurrence of impaired collateralization, with odds ratios (ORs) of 1.59 and 5.72 in the T2 and T3 group compared with the first tertile group (P<0.001). In addition, subgroup analysis showed that higher TyG index values remained strongly associated with increased risk of less developed collateralization. To compare the risk assessment efficacy for the formation of collateralization between the TyG index and other metabolic abnormality indicators, an area under the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) was obtained. A significant improvement in the risk assessment performance for impaired collateralization emerged when adding the TyG index into a baseline model. Conclusions The increased TyG index is strongly associated with less developed collateralization in CAD patients with CTO lesions and its risk assessment performance is better than single metabolic abnormality indicators.
