An advancement in the synthesis of nano Pd@magnetic amine-Functionalized UiO-66-NH2 catalyst for cyanation and O-arylation reactions

In-situ construction of chitosan@tannin structure on bamboo fiber for green and convenient reinforcement of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) biocomposite

Fiber-reinforced biocomposites were widely considered as the optimal sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based polymers due to their renewable, degradable, and environmentally friendly characteristics, along with economic benefits. However, the poor interfacial bonding between the matrix and natural fiber reinforcement remained a key issue limiting their mechanical and thermal properties. Focusing on cost-effective, convenient, and low-pollution chemical methods, this work proposed a strategy for in-situ synthesis of composite structures on bamboo fiber (BF) surfaces. Crude chitosan (CS) and reclaimed tannic acid (TA) were utilized as the raw materials, to construct stereo-netlike chitosan @ tannin structures (CS@TA) via a one-pot method facilitated by hydrogen bonding and complexation. The influence of reactant concentration and pH value on the process was further investigated and optimized. The CS@TA structure improved the interfacial bonding between the BF reinforcement and matrix poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), and this non-amino-driven construction provided a potential reaction platform for functionalizing the interfacial layer. The modified biocomposite showed improvements in tensile and impact strengths (51.58 %, 41.18 %), also in tensile and flexural moduli (13.59 %, 26.88 %). Enhancements were also observed in thermal properties and heat capacity. This work presents a simple and promising approach to increase biocomposite interface bonding.

URJC-1: Stable and Efficient Catalyst for O-Arylation Cross-Coupling

The design of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) allows the definition of properties for their final application in small-scale heterogeneous catalysis. Incorporating various catalytic centers within a single structure can produce a synergistic effect, which is particularly intriguing for cross-coupling reactions. The URJC-1 material exhibits catalytic duality: the metal centers act as Lewis acid centers, while the nitrogen atoms of the organic ligand must behave as basic centers. The impact of reaction temperature, catalyst concentration, and basic agent concentration was evaluated. Several copper-based catalysts, including homogeneous and heterogeneous MOF catalysts with and without the presence of nitrogen atoms in the organic ligand, were assessed for their catalytic effect under optimal conditions. Among the catalysts tested, URJC-1 exhibited the highest catalytic activity, achieving complete conversion of 4-nitrobenzaldehyde with only 3% mol copper concentration in one hour. Furthermore, URJC-1 maintained its crystalline structure even after five reaction cycles, demonstrating remarkable stability in the reaction medium. The study also examined the impact of various substituents of the substrate alcohol on the reaction using URJC-1. The results showed that the reaction had high activity when activating substituents were present and for most cyclic alcohols rather than linear ones.

Ti-based MOFs with acetic acid pendings as an efficient catalyst in the preparation of new spiropyrans with biological moieties

The strategy of designing heterogeneous porous catalysts by a post-modification method is a smart strategy to increase the catalytic power of desired catalysts. Accordingly, in this report, metal-organic frameworks based on titanium with acetic acid pending were designed and synthesized via post-modification method. The structure of the target catalyst has been investigated using different techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDX, Mapping, and N2 adsorption/desorption (BET/the BJH) the correctness of its formation has been proven. The catalytic application of Ti-based MOFs functionalized with acetic acid was evaluated in the preparation of new spiropyrans, and the obtained results show that the catalytic performance is improved by this modification. In this context, our study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on titanium, functionalized with acetic acid pendants, using a post-modification method. Various characterization techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), mapping, and N2 adsorption/desorption (BET/BJH), were employed to investigate the structure and composition of the synthesized catalyst. These techniques collectively confirmed the successful formation and structural integrity of the target catalyst. The structure of the synthesized products was confirmed by melting point, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR and FT-IR techniques. Examining the general process of catalyst synthesis and its catalytic application shows that the mentioned modification is very useful for catalytic purposes. The presented catalyst was used in synthesis of a wide range of biologically active spiropyrans with good yields. The simultaneous presence of several biologically active cores in the synthesized products will highlight the biological properties of these compounds. The present study offers a promising insight into the rational design, synthesis, and application of task-specific porous catalysts, particularly in the context of synthesizing biologically active candidate molecules.

Crustacean-inspired chitin-based flexible buffer layer with a helical cross-linked network for bamboo fiber/poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) biocomposites

Marine biological resources, serving as a renewable and sustainable reservoir, holds significant import for the utilization of composite material. Hence, we produced bamboo fiber/poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (BF/PHB) biocomposites with exceptional performance and economic viability, drawing inspiration from the resilience of crustacean shells. Polyaminoethyl modified chitin (PAECT) was synthesized using the alkali freeze-thaw method and introduced into the interface between BF and PHB to improve interfacial adhesion. The resulting chitin fibers, characterized by their intertwined helical chains, constructed a flexible mesh structure on the BF surface through an electrostatic self-assembly approach. The interwoven PAECT filaments infiltrated the dual-phase structure, acting as a promoter of interfacial compatibility, while the flexible chitin network provided a greater capacity for deformation accommodation. Consequently, both impact and tensile strength of the BF/PHB composites were notably enhanced. Additionally, this flexible layer ameliorated the thermal stability and crystalline properties of the composites. This investigation aimed to leverage the distinctive helical configuration of chitin to facilitate the advancement of bio-reinforced composites.

β-Ketoallylic methylsulfones synthesis via inert C(sp3)-H bond activation by magnetic Ag-Cu MOF

Herein, the one-pot tandem synthesis of β-ketoallylic methylsulfones has been achieved from readily available dimethyl sulfoxide and acetophenones as coupling partners in one step. In this procedure, dimethyl sulfoxide serves as a triple role including solvent, dual synthon and as an oxidant agent. The use of magnetic Ag-Cu MOF as a bimetallic catalyst is the key to the progress of the reaction due to its accessible active sites. It provides facile access to various β-ketoallylic methylsulfone derivatives from direct C(sp3)-H bond activation and functionalization of aromatic methyl ketones especially acetophenones with electron-rich and electron-poor groups. Moreover, the present work offers a synthetically powerful strategy to form products in good to excellent yields (74-96%) with the atom, step, and pot economics. It has also delivered a new chromane-4-one derivative from 2-hydroxy acetophenone with intramolecular Michael-addition of related β-ketoallyl methylsulfone product. In the final step, the electronic properties of some products have been predicted with the theoretical studies.

Aluminium-catalysed synthesis of aryl enol ethers from phenols and dimethyl ketals

We report an environmentally friendly, aluminium-catalysed, halide- and transition metal-free method for the synthesis of aryl enol ethers from phenols and dimethyl ketals that involves ketal exchange driven by the removal of methanol. The obtained aryl enol ethers were transformed into the corresponding diaryl ethers by Pd/C-catalysed dehydrogenation or DDQ oxidation.

High Proton Conductivity of the UiO-66-NH2-SPES Composite Membrane Prepared by Covalent Cross-Linking

A sulfonated poly(ethersulfone) (SPES)-metal-organic framework (MOF) film with excellent proton conductivity was synthesized by anchoring UiO-66-NH₂ to the main chain of the aromatic polymer through the Hinsberg reaction. The chemical bond was formed between the amino group in MOFs and the -SO₂Cl group in chlorosulfonated poly(ethersulfones) to conduct protons in the proton channel of the membrane, making the membrane have excellent proton conductivity. UiO-66-NH₂ is successfully prepared as a result of the consistency of the experimental and simulated powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns of MOFs. The existence of absorption peaks of characteristic functional groups in Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra proved the successful preparation of SPES, PES-SO₂Cl, and a composite film. The results of the AC impedance test indicate that the composite film with a 3% mass fraction has the best proton conductivity of 0.215 S·cm^-1, which is 6.2 times higher than that of the blended film without a chemical bond at 98% RH and 353 K. To our knowledge, there are rarely any reports on the preparation of a composite membrane by directly linking MOFs and the membrane matrix with chemical bonds. This work provides a good way to synthesize the highly conductive proton exchange film.

Application of Zr-MOFs based copper complex in synthesis of pyrazolo[3, 4-b]pyridine-5-carbonitriles via anomeric-based oxidation

In this research article, Zr-MOFs based copper complex as a novel heterogeneous and porous catalyst was designed and prepared. The structure of catalyst has verified by various techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, SEM, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms (BET), EDS, SEM-elemental mapping, TG and DTG analysis. UiO-66-NH2/TCT/2-amino-Py@Cu(OAc)2 was used as an efficient catalyst in the synthesis of pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine-5-carbonitrile derivatives. The aromatization of titled molecules is performed via a cooperative vinylogous anomeric-based oxidation both under air and inert atmospheres. The unique properties of the presented method are short reaction time, high yield, reusability of catalyst, synthesis of desired product under mild and green condition.

Effective Removal of Humic Acid by Zr−MOFs with Surface Modification

Humic acid (HA) in makeup water is one of the important safety issues of high−parameter power plants. Herein, the Zr−based metal organic frameworks (Zr−MOFs) were applied to remove humic acid in water. The mesoporous and active sites of Zr−MOFs were controlled by different ratios of ligands to increase the adsorption of HA. The maximum adsorption capacity was 150.15 mg g−1. The morphology and adsorption properties of the Zr−MOFs were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X−ray diffraction (XRD), surface charge, Fourier Transform infrared (FT−IR), N2 adsorption−desorption and adsorption test. The adsorption process of HA accorded with the pseudo−second−order kinetics, while the adsorption isotherm conformed to the Langmuir model and the adsorption was proved to be a spontaneous and endothermic process. Physical adsorption by the mesoporous materials and the hydrogen bonding interactions between the Zr−MOFs and HA were the driving forces of HA adsorption. These results provided useful information for the effective removal of HA and enhanced our understanding of the adsorption mechanism of HA on Zr−MOFs.

Applications of novel composite UiO-66-NH2/Melamine with phosphorous acid tags as a porous and efficient catalyst for the preparation of novel spiro-oxindoles

A new approach for the incorporation of phosphorous acid tags into a metal organic framework based on UiO-66-NH2/Melamine was introduced. This new catalyst was applied to the preparation of novel spiro-oxindoles under mild and green conditions.

Support-Activity Relationship in Heterogeneous Catalysis for Biomass Valorization and Fine-Chemicals Production

Heterogeneous catalysts are progressively expanding their field of application, from high-throughput reactions for traditional industrial chemistry with production volumes reaching millions of tons per year, a sector in which they are key players, to more niche applications for the production of fine chemicals. These novel applications require a progressive utilization reduction of fossil feedstocks, in favor of renewable ones. Biomasses are the most accessible source of organic precursors, having as advantage their low cost and even distribution across the globe. Unfortunately, they are intrinsically inhomogeneous in nature and their efficient exploitation requires novel catalysts. In this process, an accurate design of the active phase performing the reaction is important; nevertheless, we are often neglecting the importance of the support in guaranteeing stable performances and improving catalytic activity. This review has the goal of gathering and highlighting the cases in which the supports (either derived or not from biomass wastes) share the worth of performing the catalysis with the active phase, for those reactions involving the synthesis of fine chemicals starting from biomasses as feedstocks.
