Electro-oxidation of formoterol fumarate on the surface of novel poly(thiazole yellow-G) layered multi-walled carbon nanotube paste electrode

Integrated biosensor array for multiplex biomarkers cancer diagnosis via in-situ self-assembly carbon nanotubes with an ordered inverse-opal structure

To enhance the precision and reliability of early disease detection, especially in malignancies, an exhaustive investigation of multi-target biomarkers is essential. In this study, an advanced integrated electrochemical biosensor array that demonstrates exceptional performance was constructed. This biosensor was developed through a controllable porous-size mechanism and in-situ modification of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to quantify multiplex biomarkers-specifically, C-reaction protein (CRP), carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125), and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)-in human serum plasma. The fabrication process involved creating a highly ordered three-dimensional inverse-opal structure with the CNTs (pCNTs) modifier through microdroplet-based microfluidics, confined spatial self-assembly of nanoparticles, and chemical wet-etching. This innovative approach allowed for direct in-situ modification of nanomaterial onto the surface of electrode array, eliminating secondary transfer and providing exceptional control over structure and stability. The outstanding electrochemical performance was achieved through the synergistic effect of the pCNTs nanomaterial, aptamer, and horseradish peroxidase-labeled (HRP-) antibody. Additionally, the integrated biosensor array platform comprised multiple individually addressable electrode units (n = 11), enabling simultaneous multi-parallel/target testing, thereby ensuring accuracy and high throughput. Crucially, this integrated biosensor array accurately quantified multiplex biomarkers in human serum, yielding results comparable to commercial methods. This integrated technology holds promise for point-of-care testing (POCT) in early disease diagnosis and biological analysis.

Liquid-colloid-solid modular assembly for three-dimensional electrochemical biosensing of small molecules

Electrochemical biosensors hold promise for advanced analytical applications in modern life analysis due to their miniaturization and cost-effectiveness. Nevertheless, their implementation in complex biological systems necessitates overcoming challenges related to timeliness, sensitivity, and interference resistance. Here, we developed a novel DNA hydrogel three-dimensional electron transporter through liquid-colloid-solid assembly, integrating electronic mediators and employing porous electrode covers with 3D printing technology. Our approach facilitated the fabrication of a high-performance electrochemical sensor for small molecule detection, leveraging target-specific aptamers and catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) elements within the DNA hydrogel, which exhibited outstanding selectivity, sensitivity, and universality, achieving detection limits of 0.047 nM for kanamycin and 2.67 pM for ATP. Furthermore, this sensor could detect kanamycin in real samples, demonstrating good accuracy and robust anti-interference capabilities in human serum. Our work not only possesses substantial application value in clinical sample analysis but also represents a breakthrough in traditional strategies, thereby contributing to advancements in the application of electrochemical biosensors for life analysis.

Label-Free detection of Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome using a highly conductive 2-D rGO/MoS2/PANI nanocomposite based immunosensor

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrinal disorder characterized by multiple tiny cysts, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, hirsutism, and infertility. The current diagnostic tools comprise of expensive, time-consuming ultrasonography to serological test, which have low patient compliance. To address these limitations, we have developed a highly sensitive, cost effective and ultrafast immunosensor for the diagnosis of PCOS. Herein, we have fabricated a 2-D electro conductive composites of reduced Graphene oxide (rGO), Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and Polyaniline (PANI) as electrode material. Furthermore, for detecting an early and non-cyclic biomarker of PCOS, i.e. anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH). We utilize the specific antigen-antibody mechanism, in which monoclonal Anti-AMH antibodies were covalently immobilized using EDC-NHS chemistry on electrode. The developed biosensor was physicochemical and electrochemically characterized to demonstrate its efficiency. Further we have investigated the biosensor's performance with Cyclic Voltammetry, Differential Pulse Voltammetry, and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy. We have validated that under the optimized condition the immunosensor exhibits higher sensitivity with a LOD of ∼ 2.0 ng/mL with a linear range up to 100 ng/mL. Furthermore, this immunosensor works efficiently with a lower sample volume (>5 μL), which provides a sensitive, reproducible, low-cost, rapid analysis to detect AMH level in PCOS diagnosis.

Real samples sensitive dopamine sensor based on poly 1,3-benzothiazol-2-yl((4-carboxlicphenyl)hydrazono)acetonitrile on a glassy carbon electrode

Herein, a novel electrochemical sensor that was used for the first time for sensitive and selective detection of dopamine (DA) was fabricated. The new sensor is based on the decoration of the glassy carbon electrode surface (GC) with a polymer film of 1,3-Benzothiazol-2-yl((4-carboxlicphenyl)hydrazono)) acetonitrile (poly(BTCA). The prepared (poly(BTCA) was examined by using different techniques such as 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, and UV-visible spectroscopy. The electrochemical investigations of DA were assessed using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The results obtained showed that the modifier increased the electrocatalytic efficiency with a noticeable increase in the oxidation peak current of DA in 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS) at an optimum pH of 7.0 and scan rate of 200 mV/s when compared to unmodified GC. The new sensor displays a good performance for detecting DA with a limit of detection (LOD 3σ), and limit of quantification (LOQ 10σ) are 0.28 nM and 94 nM respectively. The peak current of DA is linearly proportional to the concentration in the range from 0.1 to 10.0 µM. Additionally, the fabricated electrode showed sufficient reproducibility, stability, and selectivity for DA detection in the presence of different interferents. The proposed poly(BTCA)/GCE sensor was effectively applied to detect DA in the biological samples.

Oatmeal-derived carbon loaded with Pt nanoparticles using a "two-fold benefit approach" for sensitive detection of the biomolecule adrenaline

In this study, we innovatively synthesized nitrogen-doped carbon microspheres (NCS) derived from oatmeal. By utilizing polyoxometalates (POM) as both reducing and linking agents, we achieved uniform loading of platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) onto the surface of the NCS. The composite nanoparticles constructed from Pt/polyoxometalate/nitrogen-doped carbon microspheres (Pt/POM/NCS) fully exploit the synergistic catalytic effect, demonstrating superior performance in adrenaline detection. The method has a linear range of 2.59 to 1109.59 μM, a detection limit as low as 0.25 μM (S/N = 3), and a sensitivity of 0.74 μA μM-1 cm-2. Additionally, it exhibits high stability and strong anti-interference ability. The recoveries in human serum were 98.51 % to 101.25 %.

A Sensitive Enzymatic Electrochemical Biosensor for Cholesterol Based on Cobalt Ferrite@Molybdenum Disulfide/Gold Nanoparticles

Cholesterol is essential in biological systems, and the level of cholesterol in the body of a person acts as a diagnostic marker for a variety of diseases. So, in this work, we fabricated an enzymatic electrochemical biosensor for cholesterol using cobalt ferrite@molybdenum disulfide/gold nanoparticles (CoFe2O4@MoS2/Au). The synthesized composite was used for the determination of cholesterol by voltametric methods. The electroactive material CoFe2O4@MoS2/Au was successfully verified from the physiochemical studies such as XRD, Raman, FT-IR, and XPS spectroscopy along with morphological FESEM and HRTEM characterization. CoFe2O4@MoS2/Au showed outstanding dispersion in the aqueous phase, a large effective area, good biological compatibility, and superior electronic conductivity. The microflower-like CoFe2O4@MoS2/Au was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. The image of transmission electron microscopy showed decoration of gold nanoparticles on CoFe2O4@MoS2 surfaces. Furthermore, a one-step dip-coating technique was used to build the biosensor used for cholesterol detection. In addition to acting as an enabling matrix to immobilize cholesterol oxidase (ChOx), CoFe2O4@MoS2/Au contributes to an increase in electrical conductivity. The differential pulse voltammetry method was used for the quantitative measurement of cholesterol. The calibration curve for cholesterol was linear in the concentration range of 5 to 100 μM, with a low limit of detection of 0.09 μM and sensitivity of 0.194 μA μM-1 cm-2. Furthermore, the biosensor demonstrates good practicability, as it was also employed for identifying cholesterol in real samples with acceptable selectivity and stability.

Toward an Improved Electrocatalytic Determination of Immunomodulator COVID Medication Baricitinib Using Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Nickel Hybrid

The study presents a first electrochemical method for the determination of the immunomodulator drug Baricitinib (BARI), crucial in managing COVID-19 patients requiring oxygen support. A unique electrode was developed by modifying graphite carbon nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) with functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (f.MWCNTs), resulting in nanohybrids tailored for highly sensitive BARI detection. Comparative analysis revealed the superior electrocatalytic performance of the nanohybrid-modified electrode over unmodified counterparts and other modifications, attributed to synergistic interactions between f.MWCNTs and nickel nanoparticles. Under optimized conditions, the sensors exhibited linear detection within a concentration range from 4.00 × 10-8 to 5.56 × 10-5 M, with a remarkably low detection limit of 9.65 × 10-9 M. Notably, the modified electrode displayed minimal interference from common substances and demonstrated high precision in detecting BARI in plasma and medicinal formulations, underscoring its clinical relevance and potential impact on COVID-19 treatment strategies.

4-Ethylphenyl Sulfate Detection by an Electrochemical Sensor Based on a MoS2 Nanosheet-Modified Molecularly Imprinted Biopolymer

One of the gut-derived uremic toxins 4-ethylphenyl sulfate (4-EPS) exhibits significantly elevated plasma levels in chronic kidney diseases and autism, and its early quantification in bodily fluids is important. Therefore, the development of rapid and sensitive technologies for 4-EPS detection is of significant importance for clinical diagnosis. In the current work, the synthesis of a molecularly imprinted biopolymer (MIBP) carrying 4-EPS specific cavities only using the biopolymer polydopamine (PDA) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets has been reported. The fabricated electrode was prepared using screen-printed carbon electrodes on a polyvinyl chloride substrate. The synthesized material was characterized using several techniques, and electrochemical studies were performed using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) techniques. The DPV technique for the electrochemical sensing of 4-EPS using the fabricated sensor (PDA@MoS2-MIBP) determined a sensitivity of 0.012 μA/ng mL/cm2 and a limit of detection of 30 ng/mL in a broad linear range of 1-2200 ng/mL. Also, the interferent study was performed to evaluate the selectivity of the fabricated sensor along with the control and stability study. Moreover, the performance of the sensor was evaluated in the spiked urine sample, and a comparison was made with the data obtained by ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectroscopy.

Electrochemical Behavior of Janus Kinase Inhibitor Ruxolitinib at a Taurine-Electropolymerized Carbon Paste Electrode: Insights into Sensing Mechanisms

Ruxolitinib (RXL) is a Janus kinase inhibitor used for treating intermediate- or high-risk myelofibrosis. This study presents an electrode modified with electrochemically polymerized taurine on a carbon paste electrode via cyclic voltammetry (CV). The surface characterization of the poly(taurine)-CP electrode was evaluated by using electrochemical (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy─EIS, CV), morphological (scanning electron microscope─SEM), and spectroscopic (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy─FT-IR) techniques. Under optimized conditions, RXL exhibited good linearity within the 0.01-1.0 μM concentration range, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.005 μM. The proposed electrochemical sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity, accuracy, precision, and repeatability. Furthermore, it effectively detected RXL in human urine and pharmaceutical samples.

Development of a sensitive and inexpensive electrochemical sensor for indigotin using poly(valine) modified carbon paste electrode

In this study, an electro-polymerized valine (VLN) stimulated carbon paste electrode (CPE) was used to create a straightforward, inexpensive, and renewable electrochemical sensor for accurate and selective indigotin (IGN) determination. Comparing the CPE, to the modified electrode, it exhibits excellent sensibility for the IGN oxidation-reduction reaction. Multiple techniques, including cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized in this case to characterize the electrode materials. IGN was analyzed using CPE and poly(valine) modified carbon paste electrodes (P(VLN)MCPE) taking a 6.5 pH in 0.2 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS). Because it has more active spots than the CPE and a strong electrocatalytic nature, P(VLN)MCPE exhibits excellent electrochemical performance. The impact of pH, scan rate, numerous interferents, and fluctuation in analyte concentration were only a few of the important electrochemical factors that were investigated. The variation in scan rate proves that the IGN oxidation-reduction reaction on the surface of P(VLN)MCPE is as follows an adsorption-controlled pathway. The P(VLN)MCPE displays a good electrochemical nature for IGN in the 0.2 to 5.0 μM range, with a low limit of detection (LOD) is 0.0069 μM and a limit of quantification (LOQ) is 0.023 μM. P(VLN)MCPE shows good reproducibility, stability, and repeatability for the detection of IGN. Additionally, P(VLN)MCPE's analytical applicability for IGN detection in water sample was assessed with impressive recovery.

A novel, extreme low-cost poly (Erythrosine) modified pencil graphite electrode for determination of Adrenaline

A simple, novel, and less cost yellow (Erythrosine) modified pencil graphite electrode (Po-ERY/MGPE) was successfully fabricated via electropolymerization method using cyclic voltammetric techniques. The fabricated Po-ERY/MGPE opted as a sensor for the detection of Adrenaline (ADR) in 0.2 M PBS (7.4 pH). This reported senor displayed excellent electrocatalytic activity, increased sensitivity, high stability, superior electron transfer kinetics in the oxidation of ADR once relative to BGPE. The significance of pH, scan rate, and impact of concentration was assessed at the sensor. As per the pH and scan rate study, redox routes carry the same number of electrons and protons, and electro-oxidation of ADR was adsorption controlled respectively. The LOD of ADR was found to be 0.499 µM. The DPV data indicate that there is a significant peak divergence among ADR and uric acid (UA) which could make it easier to determine them alone and simultaneously on the sensor. The described method has been employed for the determination of ADR in injection sample. Good recovery values indicate the efficacy and applicability of the sensor in detecting ADR.

Electrochemical detection and quantification of catechol based on a simple and sensitive poly(riboflavin) modified carbon nanotube paste electrode

In the present research work, selective and sensitive catechol (CT) detection and quantification were shown in the presence of resorcinol (RS) in 0.2 M phosphate buffer (PB) solution by preparing a low-cost, simple, and green carbon nanotube paste electrode (CNTPE) surface activated with electropolymerized riboflavin (PRF). The morphological, conductivity, and electrochemical features of the modified electrode (PRFMCNTPE) and bare carbon nanotube paste electrode (BCNTPE) materials were analyzed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The PRF-activated electrode displays outstanding sensitivity, stability, selectivity, reproducibility, and repeatability for the redox feature of CT with improved electrochemical current and declined electrochemical potential compared to BCNTPE. The peak currents of CT are correlated to the different CT concentrations (CV method: 6.0-60.0 μM & DPV method: 0.5-7.0 μM), and the obtained detection limit (DL) and quantification limit (QL) are found to be 0.025 μM and 0.085 μM (CV method) and 0.0039 μM and 0.0132 μM (DPV method), respectively. The prepared PRFMCNTPE material was advantageous for the examination of CT in environmentally important tap water sample as a real-time application.

Insights into the Design of An Enzyme Free Sustainable Sensing Platform for Efavirenz

In this study, a new hybrid sensor was developed using titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) and nafion as an anchor agent on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE/TiO2-NPs-nafion) to detect efavirenz (EFV), an anti-HIV medication. TiO2-NPs was synthesized using Eucalyptus globulus leaf extract and characterized using ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–VIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The electrochemical and sensing properties of the developed sensor for EFV were assessed using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The current response of GCE/TiO2-NPs-nafion electrode towards the oxidation of EFV was greater compared to the bare GCE and GCE/TiO2-NPs electrodes. A linear dynamic range of 4.5 to 18.7 µM with 0.01 µM limit of detection was recorded on the electrode using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The electrochemical sensor demonstrated good selectivity and practicality for detecting EFV in pharmaceuticals (EFV drugs) with excellent recovery rates, ranging from 92.0–103.9%. The reactive sites of EFV have been analyzed using quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). Monte Carlo (MC) simulations revealed a strong electrostatic interaction on the substrate-adsorbate (GCE/TiO2-NPs-nafion-EFV) system. Results show good agreement between the MC computed adsorption energies and the experimental CV results for EFV. The stronger adsorption energy of nafion onto the GCE/TiO2-NPs substrate contributed to the catalytic role in the signal amplification for sensing of EFV. Our results provide an effective way to explore the design of new 2D materials for sensing of EFV, which is highly significant in medicinal and materials chemistry.

Analysis of Staphylococcus aureus Molecules in Non-Treated Blood Using Mercury Immobilized Carbon Nanotube Sensor

Staphylococcus aureus bacteria is a ubiquitous Gram-positive microorganism that causes infections related to the sudden infant death syndrome. Recently, basic detection methods depend on complicated PCR amplification, electric separation, spectric adsorption and other detection systems. However, in this study, simplified sensitive voltammetric skills are developed. To identify an effective diagnostic method for Staphylococcus aureus (SA), a voltammetric sensing probe was sought using mercury immobilized on a carbon nanotube sensor (MCN). The voltammetric MCN conditions were optimized through stripping and cyclic voltammetry. Diagnostic electrolyte was used on non-treated blood sera as an electrolyte solution. The optimum cyclic and stripping analytical working range was 0.5–4.0 mL (3 × 102~5 × 102 CFU/0.5 mL) SA. The statistic relative standard deviation of 0.1 mL SA was observed to be 0.0078 (n = 5). Using the optimum parameters, a diagnostic test was performed by the direct assay of SA in non-treated human blood and patient sera. Here, the developed results can be used for the direct assay of non-treated blood sera, organ monitoring, in-vivo diagnosis, and other assays requiring SA detection.

Electrocatalytic Determination of Hydroxychloroquine Using Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate Modified Carbon Nanotube Paste Electrode

Selective, sensitive, easy, and fast voltammetric techniques were developed for the analysis of Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ). These analysis were carried out at sodium dodecyl sulphate modified carbon nanotube paste electrode (SDSMCNTPE) using an aqueous 0.2 M phosphate buffer solution as supporting electrolyte. The field emission-scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used for material characterization. A minute quantity of the SDS surfactant was sufficient to convey an outstanding electrocatalytic action to the electrochemical oxidation nature of HCQ. The HCQ molecule parades only electrochemical oxidation (irreversible) with the transfer of two electrons. The detection of HCQ was carried out through CV method at SDSMCNTPE and bare carbon nanotube paste electrode (BCNTPE). The corresponding analytical curve offered a decent linear nature in the considered HCQ concentration range (10-40 µM) and the detection limit was found to be 0.85 µM. The significant peak to peak split-up was observed between HCQ and interferents with a decent sensitivity and stability. The SDSMCNTPE to be an approachable electrode for the usage in the examination of HCQ independently and in the presence of paracetamol (PC) and ascorbic acid (AA). Thus, they were used to determine HCQ in pharmaceutical formulations and the results that showed good agreement with comparative methods. Furthermore, a mechanism for HCQ electro-oxidation was proposed.

Poly (Orange CD) sensor for paracetamol in presence of folic acid and dopamine

In the present work, Orange CD was chosen as an intriguing modifier for the electropolymerization on the surface of CPE by the CV technique. A novel, sensitive, and cost-effective poly (Orange CD) MCPE (PoOCD/MCPE) sensor was utilized for the selective detection of paracetamol (PA) in 0.2 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS) of pH 7.4. The oxidation peak current of PA was vastly enhanced at the sensor. The scan rate study is suggested that electro-oxidation of PA was adsorption-controlled. The pH study testifies the redox pathways transport with the same quantity of electrons and protons. The detection limit of PA is found to be 2.64 µM. DPV results show that substantial peak separation between PA, folic acid (FA), and dopamine (DA) could be facilitating their individual and simultaneous determination on the sensor. The decorated sensor demonstrates high sensitivity, stability, reproducibility, repeatability and has been successfully exploited for the detection of PA in a tablet with promising results.

Electro-Polymerized Titan Yellow Modified Carbon Paste Electrode for the Analysis of Curcumin

A modest, efficient, and sensitive chemically modified electrode was fabricated for sensing curcumin (CRC) through an electrochemically polymerized titan yellow (TY) modified carbon paste electrode (PTYMCPE) in phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.0). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) approaches were used for CRC detection. PTYMCPE interaction with CRC suggests that the electrode exhibits admirable electrochemical response as compared to bare carbon paste electrode (BCPE). Under the optimized circumstances, a linear response of the electrode was observed for CRC in the concentration range 2 × 10−6 M to 10 × 10−6 M with a limit of detection (LOD) of 10.94 × 10−7 M. Moreover, the effort explains that the PTYMCPE electrode has a hopeful approach for the electrochemical resolution of biologically significant compounds. Additionally, the proposed electrode has demonstrated many advantages such as easy preparation, elevated sensitivity, stability, and enhanced catalytic activity, and can be successfully applied in real sample analysis.
