Determining the microbial and chemical contamination in Ecuador's main rivers

The escalating threat of human-associated infectious bacteria in surface aquatic resources: Insights into prevalence, antibiotic resistance, survival mechanisms, detection, and prevention strategies

Anthropogenic activities and climate change profoundly impact water quality, leading to a concerning increase in the prevalence and abundance of bacterial pathogens across diverse aquatic environments. This rise has resulted in a growing challenge concerning the safety of water sources, particularly surface waters and marine environments. This comprehensive review delves into the multifaceted challenges presented by bacterial pathogens, emphasizing threads to human health within ground and surface waters, including marine ecosystems. The exploration encompasses the intricate survival mechanisms employed by bacterial pathogens and the proliferation of antimicrobial resistance, largely driven by human-generated antibiotic contamination in aquatic systems. The review further addresses prevalent pathogenic bacteria, elucidating associated risk factors, exploring their eco-physiology, and discussing the production of potent toxins. The spectrum of detection techniques, ranging from conventional to cutting-edge molecular approaches, is thoroughly examined to underscore their significance in identifying and understanding waterborne bacterial pathogens. A critical aspect highlighted in this review is the imperative for real-time monitoring of biomarkers associated with waterborne bacterial pathogens. This monitoring serves as an early warning system, facilitating the swift implementation of action plans to preserve and protect global water resources. In conclusion, this comprehensive review provides fresh insights and perspectives, emphasizing the paramount importance of preserving the quality of aquatic resources to safeguard human health on a global scale.

Native microalgal-bacterial consortia from the Ecuadorian Amazon region: an alternative to domestic wastewater treatment

In low-middle income countries (LMIC), wastewater treatment using native microalgal-bacterial consortia has emerged as a cost-effective and technologically-accessible remediation strategy. This study evaluated the effectiveness of six microalgal-bacterial consortia (MBC) from the Ecuadorian Amazon in removing organic matter and nutrients from non-sterilized domestic wastewater (NSWW) and sterilized domestic wastewater (SWW) samples. Microalgal-bacterial consortia growth, in NSWW was, on average, six times higher than in SWW. Removal rates (RR) for NH4 +- N and PO4 3--P were also higher in NSWW, averaging 8.04 ± 1.07 and 6.27 ± 0.66 mg L-1 d-1, respectively. However, the RR for NO3 - -N did not significantly differ between SWW and NSWW, and the RR for soluble COD slightly decreased under non-sterilized conditions (NSWW). Our results also show that NSWW and SWW samples were statistically different with respect to their nutrient concentration (NH4 +-N and PO4 3--P), organic matter content (total and soluble COD and BOD5), and physical-chemical parameters (pH, T, and EC). The enhanced growth performance of MBC in NSWW can be plausibly attributed to differences in nutrient and organic matter composition between NSWW and SWW. Additionally, a potential synergy between the autochthonous consortia present in NSWW and the native microalgal-bacterial consortia may contribute to this efficiency, contrasting with SWW where no active autochthonous consortia were observed. Finally, we also show that MBC from different localities exhibit clear differences in their ability to remove organic matter and nutrients from NSWW and SWW. Future research should focus on elucidating the taxonomic and functional profiles of microbial communities within the consortia, paving the way for a more comprehensive understanding of their potential applications in sustainable wastewater management.

Caenorhabditis elegans as a suitable model to evaluate the toxicity of water from Rolante River, southern Brazil

Urbanization and agricultural activities increased environmental contaminants. Integrated analysis of water parameters and bioassays represents an essential approach to evaluating aquatic resource quality. This study aimed to assess water quality by microbiological and physicochemical parameters as well as the toxicological effects of water samples on the Ames test and Caenorhabditis elegans model. Samples were collected during (collection 1) and after (collection 2) pesticide application in the upper (S1), middle (S2), and lower (S3) sections of the Rolante River, southern Brazil. Metals were determined by GFAAS and pesticides by UPLC-MS/MS. Bioassays using the Ames test and the nematode C. elegans were performed. Levels of microbiological parameters, as well as Mn and Cu were higher than the maximum allowed limits established by legislation in collection 2 compared to collection 1. The presence of pesticide was observed in both collections; higher levels were found in collection 1. No mutagenic effect was detected. Significant inhibition of body length of C. elegans was found in collection 1 at S2 (P < 0.001) and S3 (P < 0.001) and in collection 2 at S2 (P = 0.004). Comparing the same sampling site between collections, a significant difference was found between the site of collection (F(3,6)=8.75, P = 0.01) and the time of collection (F(1,2)=28.61, P = 0.03), for the S2 and S3 samples. C. elegans model was useful for assessing surface water quality/toxicity. Results suggest that an integrated analysis for the surface water status could be beneficial for future approaches.

History, Current Situation and Challenges of Gold Mining in Ecuador’s Litoral Region

Gold mining in Ecuador has been present in the country since Inca times; over the years interest in the mineral has increased, leading to the creation of legislation to control the mining sector in a safe manner. The Litoral region consists of seven provinces, six of which have registered gold concessions; the most affected provinces are El Oro and Esmeraldas. The objective of this study was to analyze the historical and current situation of artisanal and industrial gold mining in the Litoral region of Ecuador. Different methodologies were used for the elaboration of this study, including bibliographic review, grey literature, field interviews and a validation of expert judgment. The main results indicate that El Oro and Esmeraldas are essentially the most conflictive areas in the region, as they have sometimes had to establish precautionary measures due to the risks caused by illegal mining. In addition, in both areas there is a great socioeconomic impact ranging from lack of opportunities, forgetfulness, migration, emigration, and violation of rights, among others. With respect to environmental impacts, the study highlights the contamination of water sources (which leads to a lack of drinking water for people), and damage to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Finally, the study concludes that the authorities should control the mining sector more by implementing more laws and carrying out inspections to put an end to illegal gold mining, in order to improve the situation in the areas.
