Process optimization and modeling of Cd2+ biosorption onto the free and immobilized Turbinaria ornata using Box-Behnken experimental design

Remediation of lead toxicity with waste-bio materials from aqueous solutions in fixed-bed column using response surface methodology

Heavy metal ions pose significant risks to human health, pelagic, and several other life forms due to perniciousness, tendency to accumulate, and resistance to biodegradation. Waste bio-materials extend a budding alternative as low-cost adsorbent to address the removal of noxious pollutants from wastewater on account of being cost-effective and exhibiting exceptional adsorption capacities. The current exploration was accomplished to gauge the performance of raw and modified human hair concerning lead scavenging in a down-flow fixed bed column. The appraisal of column performance under varying operational parameters encompassing bed height (15-45 cm), influent metal ion concentration (60-140 mg L-1), and a solution flow rate (20-40 mL min-1) was performed by breakthrough curve analysis. The consequences acquired were evaluated using the Yoon Nelson, Thomas, Adam-Bohart, and Bed Depth Service Time (BDST) model. Among these employed models, Bed Depth Service Time (BDST) and Thomas models exhibited the highest R-squared value compared to the Yoon Nelson and Adam-Bohart's model for most cases. In addition, the optimization of lead adsorption was followed using the Box-Behnken design of response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal conditions (desirability-1.00) for achieving a goal of maximum percent removal of lead ions were marked to be a bed height of 42.79 cm, solution flow rate of 20.92 mL min-1, and an initial metal concentration of 139.51 mg L-1. Under these optimized conditions, the percent amputation of lead in a fixed bed was observed to be 82.31 %, while the results of the experiment performed approximately under these optimized conditions revealed a percent removal of 85.05 %, reflecting a reasonable conformity with values acquired through Box-Behnken design.

Experimental investigation of Cd (II) ion adsorption on surface-modified mixed seaweed Biosorbent: A study on analytical interpretation and thermodynamics

Despite advancements in wastewater treatment technologies, heavy metal contamination, especially cadmium (Cd), severely threatens human health and ecosystems. The purpose of this work is to compare the removal of Cd (II) ions from aqueous solutions by chemically modified mixed seaweed biosorbent (CMSB) and physically modified mixed seaweed biosorbent (PMSB). BET, SEM, EDAX, FTIR, and XRD techniques characterized the mixed seaweed biosorbents before and after adsorption. They are well-known for their sustainability, affordability, and biodegradability. The BET study revealed that CMSB had a surface area of 19.682 m2/g, while PMSB had a lower surface area of 14.803 m2/g. The optimum adsorption conditions were a temperature of 303 K, pH of 6.0, and biosorbent dosages of 1 g/L for CMSB and 2.5 g/L for PMSB. For CMSB and PMSB, the most efficient contact times were 40 and 80 min, respectively. The Langmuir model was demonstrated to be the best fit for the experimental data when compared to other isotherm models, with a coefficient of determination, or R2, of 0.9713 and a maximum monolayer capacity of 151.2 mg/g and 181.6 mg/g for physical and chemical activated mixed seaweed biomass. There was a significant relationship between the R2 values of chemically modified and physically modified biomass. The findings demonstrate that pseudo-second-order kinetics more accurately represent the adsorption process than pseudo-first-order and Elovich models. Thermodynamic experiments validated the endothermic, spontaneous and favourable characteristics of the removal process. According to the results of the current study, PMSB and CMSB may be used as effective adsorbents to remove Cd (II) from aqueous solutions.

Optimization of desorption parameters using response surface methodology for enhanced recovery of arsenic from spent reclaimable activated carbon: Eco-friendly and sorbent sustainability approach

Desorption and adsorbent regeneration are imperative factors that are required to be taken into account when designing the adsorption system. From the environmental, economic, and practical points of view, regeneration is necessary for evaluating the efficiency and sustainability of synthesized adsorbents. However, no study has investigated the optimization of arsenic species desorption from spent adsorbents and their regeneration ability for reuse as well as safe disposal. This study aims to investigate the desorption ability of arsenic ions adsorbed on hybrid granular activated carbon and the optimization of the independent factors influencing the efficient recovery of arsenic species from the spent activated carbon using central composite design of the response surface methodology. The activated carbon before the sorption process and after the adsorption-desorption of arsenic ions have been characterized using SEM-EDX, FTIR, and TEM. The study found that all the investigated independent desorption variables greatly influence the retrievability of arsenic ions from the spent activated carbon. Using the desirability function for the optimization of the independent factors as a function of desorption efficiency, the optimum experimental conditions were solution pH of 2.00, eluent concentration of 0.10 M, and temperature of 26.63 ℃, which gave maximum arsenic ions recovery efficiency of 91 %. The validation of the quadratic model using laboratory confirmatory experiments gave an optimum arsenic ions desorption efficiency of 97 %. Therefore, the study reveals that the application of the central composite design of the response surface methodology led to the development of an accurate and valid quadratic model, which was utilized in the enhanced optimization of arsenic ions recovery from the spent reclaimable activated carbon. More so, the desorption isotherm and kinetic data of arsenic were well correlated with the Langmuir and the pseudo-second-order models, while the thermodynamics studies indicated that arsenic ions desorption process was feasible, endothermic, and spontaneous.

Ion-Exchange Resin/Carrageenan-Copper-Based Nanocomposite: Artificial Neural Network, Advanced Thermodynamic Profiling, and Anticoagulant Studies

Carrageenan (CG) and ion exchange resins (IERs) are better metal chelators. Kappa (κ) CG and IERs were synthesized and subjected to copper ion (Cu2+) adsorption to obtain DMSCH/κ-Cu, DC20H/κ-Cu, and IRP69H/κ-Cu nanocomposites (NCs). The NCs were studied using statistical physics formalism (SPF) at 315-375 K and a multilayer perceptron with five input nodes. The percentage of Cu2+ uptake efficiency was used as an outcome variable. Via the grand canonical ensemble, SPF gives models for both monolayer and multilayer sorption layers. For in vitro anticoagulant activity (ACA), the activated partial thromboplastin time were calculated using 100 μL of rabbit plasma incubated at 37 °C. After 2 min, 100 L of 0.025 M CaCl2 was added, and the clotting time was recorded for each group (n = 6). The results demonstrated that the key covariables for the adsorption process were pH and concentration. The results of artificial neural network models were comparable with the experimental findings. The error rates varied between 4.3 and 1.0%. The prediction analysis results ranged from 43.6 to 89.2. The ΔG and ΔS values for IRP69H/κ-Cu obtained were -18.91 and -16.32 and 26.21 and 22.74 kJ/mol for the temperatures 315 and 345 K, respectively. Adsorbate species were perpendicular to the adsorbent surfaces, notwithstanding the apparent importance of macro- and micropore volumes. These adsorbents typically fluctuate with temperature changes and contain one or more layers of sorption. Negative and positive sorption energies correspond to endothermic and exothermic processes. The biosorption energy (E1 and E2) values in this experiment have a value of less than 23 kJ mol-1. Complex SPF models' energy distributions validate surface properties and interactions with adsorbates. At a concentration of 100 μg/mL, DC20H/κ-Cu2+ exhibited an ACA of only 8 s. These NCs demonstrated better greater ACA with the order DC20H/κ < DMSCH/κ < IRP69H/κ. More research is needed to rule out the chemical processes behind the ACA of CG/IER-Cu NCs.

Evidences for the augmented Cd(II) biosorption by Cd(II) resistant strain Candida tropicalis XTA1874 from contaminated aqueous medium

Cadmium is one of the most dreadful heavy metals and is becoming a major toxicant in ground water with increasing concentration above the WHO Guidelines in drinking water (0.003 mg/L). The potential sources of cadmium include sewage sludge, phosphate fertilizers and ingredients like Ni-Cd batteries, pigments, plating and plastics. Cadmium levels are increased in water owing to the use and disposal of cadmium containing ingredients. Water draining from a landfill may contain higher cadmium levels. The authors have tried to evaluate the optimized nutritional conditions for the optimal growth and Cd(II) remediation capacity for a developed Cd(II) resistant yeast strain named Candida tropicalis XTA 1874 isolated from contaminated water-body in West Bengal. By analyzing the optimization conditions, a synthetic medium was developed and the composition has been given in the main text. The strain showed much better Cd(II) adsorption capacity under the optimized nutritional conditions (Mean removal = 88.077 ± 0.097%).

Dynamic removal of Pb(II) by live Dunaliella salina: a competitive uptake and isotherm model study

The main aim of this study is modeling of a continuous biosorption system for the removal of Pb(II) ions in the aqueous conditions using live Dunaliella salina microalgae. The live microalgae can grow in saline water and opens new opportunities in varying the amount and properties of biosorbent. The effects of five parameters, including pH, optical density of algae as a factor indicating the adsorbent dosage, injection time, contact time, and initial concentration of Pb(II), were optimized by means of response surface methodology (RSM) based on the central composite design (CCD). Dunaliella salina algae showed maximum Pb(II) biosorption with 96% efficiency. For the selective Pb(II) uptake in the presence of Cd(II) and Ni(II), binary and ternary systems of ions were chosen. The mutual effect of each heavy metal ion in all systems on the total uptake percentage was also examined. The ion selectivity was investigated in the presence of diverse heavy metal ions, and the Pb(II) uptake percentage was determined to be 80%. Both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were suitable for describing multicomponent binary and ternary systems depending on the presence of competitive ions in the mixture. Main functional groups and surface properties of the Dunaliella salina were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectrometry. Hence, effective heavy metal ion uptake, simple design, and cost-effective cultivation confirmed live Dunaliella salina as suitable microalgae for purifying contaminated water in an economic and safe manner.

Biosorption of Neodymium (Nd) from Aqueous Solutions Using Spirulina platensis sp. Strains

Rare earth elements such as neodymium (Nd) are important elements used mainly in developing new technologies. Although they are found in low concentrations in nature, they can be obtained by extracting solid samples such as phosphogypsum. Among the techniques, adsorption has been used successfully with several adsorbent materials. In this work, two strains of Spirulina platensis (LEB-18 and LEB-52) were employed as biosorbents for efficiently removing the Nd element from the aqueous media. Biosorption tests were carried out in a batch system, and the results of the biosorption kinetics showed that for both materials, the biosorption of Nd was better described by the Avrami model. Moreover, it could be considered that 80 min would be necessary to attain the equilibrium of Nd(III) using both biosorbents. The result of the biosorption isotherms showed that for both strains, the best-fitted model was the Liu model, having a maximum biosorption capacity of 72.5 mg g−1 for LEB-18 and 48.2 mg g−1 for LEB-52 at a temperature of 298 K. Thermodynamics of adsorption showed that for both LEB-18 and LEB-52 the process was favorable (∆G° < 0) and exothermic (∆H° −23.2 for LEB-18 and ∆H° −19.9 for LEB-52). Finally, both strains were suitable to uptake Nd, and the better result of LEB-18 could be attributed to the high amount of P and S groups in this biomass. Based on the results, a mechanism of electrostatic attraction of Nd3+ and phosphate and sulfate groups of both strains of Spirulina platensis was proposed.

Statistical Analysis and Optimization of the Brilliant Red HE-3B Dye Biosorption onto a Biosorbent Based on Residual Biomass

Using various techniques, natural polymers can be successfully used as a matrix to immobilize a residual microbial biomass in a form that is easy to handle, namely biosorbents, and which is capable of retaining chemical species from polluted aqueous media. The biosorption process of reactive Brilliant Red HE-3B dye on a new type of biosorbent, based on a residual microbial biomass of Saccharomyces pastorianus immobilized in sodium alginate, was studied using mathematical modeling of experimental data obtained under certain conditions. Different methods, such as computer-assisted statistical analysis, were applied, considering all independent and dependent variables involved in the reactive dye biosorption process. The optimal values achieved were compared, and the experimental data supported the possibility of using the immobilized residual biomass as a biosorbent for the studied reference dye. The results were sufficient to perform dye removals higher than 70-85% in an aqueous solution containing around 45-50 mg/L of reactive dye, and working with more than 20-22 g/L of prepared immobilized microbial biosorbent for more than 9.5-10 h. Furthermore, the proposed models agreed with the experimental data and permitted the prediction of the dye biosorption behavior in the experimental variation field of each independent variable.

Removal of Hexavalent Chromium from Aqueous Solutions Using Natural Zeolite Coated with Magnetic Nanoparticles: Optimization, Kinetics, and Equilibrium Studies

Stringent discharge limits, high costs, and low removal efficiency of the conventional treatment methods are facing challenges to handle industrial effluents containing heavy metals. The objective of this study was to use a recoverable magnetic zeolite to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The study investigated the application of nanotechnology to improve surface properties, recoverability, and adsorptive capacity of natural zeolite and the CCD-RSM-based optimization of adsorption process variables. Natural zeolites coated with various fractions of magnetic nanoparticles (25%, 33.33%, 50%, and 75%) were investigated for surface characters, adsorption capacity, removal efficiency, and recoverability. Natural zeolite coated with 33.33% (MZ33) was found a better adsorbent in terms of surface characters, adsorption capacity, and removal efficiency. Thirty batch adsorption experiments designed with CCD were carried out in order to optimize adsorption process variables using response surface methodology (RSM). It was found that $\text{adsorbent}\text{dose}=2\text{g}/\text{L}$ , $\text{contact}\text{time}=75\min$ , $\text{initial}\text{Cr}\left(\text{VI}\right)\text{concentration}=10\text{mg}/\text{L}$ , and $\text{solution}\text{pH}=1.5$ were the optimum conditions to achieve 93.57% Cr(VI) removal, which is very close to the experimental result of 94.88%. The adsorption isotherm determined from the operating parameters revealed that experimental data fit to the Langmuir isotherm model with ${\text{R}}^2=0.9966$ and $\text{maximum}\text{adsorption}\text{capacity}=43.933\text{mg}/\text{g}$ . This proved that the adsorption of Cr(VI) on magnetic zeolite involved monolayer adsorption on the active sites. The separation factor, ${\text{R}}_{\text{L}}$ , value lies between 0 and 1 indicating that adsorption of Cr(VI) on the magnetic zeolite is favorable. The adsorption kinetics study follows pseudo-first order in the removal of Cr(VI). FTIR analysis of magnetic zeolite revealed the presence of numerous functional groups participating in Cr(VI) adsorption. The current study confirmed that magnetic zeolite is a cost-effective and favorable material for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution.

Statistical optimization, kinetic, equilibrium isotherm and thermodynamic studies of copper biosorption onto Rosa damascena leaves as a low-cost biosorbent

In this study, Rosa damascena leaf powder was evaluated as a biosorbent for the removal of copper from aqueous solutions. Process variables such as the biosorbent dose, pH, and initial copper concentration were optimized using response surface methodology. A quadratic model was established to relate the factors to the response based on the Box-Behnken design. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to assess the experimental data, and multiple regression analysis was used to fit it to a second-order polynomial equation. A biosorbent dose of 4.0 g/L, pH of 5.5, and initial copper concentration of 55 mg/L were determined to be the best conditions for copper removal. The removal of Cu2+ ions was 88.7% under these optimal conditions, indicating that the experimental data and model predictions were in good agreement. The biosorption data were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order and Elovich kinetic models. The combination of film and intra-particle diffusion was found to influence Cu2+ biosorption. The Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models best fit the experimental data, showing a monolayer isotherm with a qmax value of 25.13 mg/g obtained under optimal conditions. The thermodynamic parameters showed the spontaneity, feasibility and endothermic nature of adsorption. Scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the biosorbent before and after Cu2+ biosorption, revealing its outstanding structural characteristics and high surface functional group availability. In addition, immobilized R. damascena leaves adsorbed 90.7% of the copper from aqueous solution, which is more than the amount adsorbed by the free biosorbent (85.3%). The main mechanism of interaction between R. damascena biomass and Cu2+ ions is controlled by both ion exchange and hydrogen bond formation. It can be concluded that R. damascena can be employed as a low-cost biosorbent to remove heavy metals from aqueous solutions.

Experimental Modeling Investigations on the Biosorption of Methyl Violet 2B Dye by the Brown Seaweed Cystoseira tamariscifolia

Methyl violet 2B dye is a major contaminant that is detrimental to both humans and aquatic microorganisms, thus it should be eliminated from water. In the current investigation, the biosorption of methyl violet 2B dye onto the brown seaweed Cystoseira tamariscifolia biomass as a sustainable low-cost biosorbent was examined by varying biosorption parameters. Biomass dosage of 7 g/L, pH 6, a temperature of 45 °C, a 60 min contact time, and a 30 mg/L initial dye concentration were determined to be the optimum biosorption conditions. Data obtained were interpreted by thermodynamic, isothermal, and kinetic models. The thermodynamic studies demonstrated that the process of dye biosorption was random and endothermic. The data were best described by Langmuir, Dubinin–Radushkevich, and Temkin models. According to the Langmuir equation, the maximal biosorption capacity (qmax) was 10.0 mg/g. Moreover, the pseudo-second-order mechanism is dominant, and chemical biosorption might represent the rate-controlling stage in the biosorption process. However, intraparticle diffusion revealed a boundary layer effect. A scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, the point of zero charge, and Fourier Transform Infra-Red were applied to characterize the algal biomass, exhibiting its remarkable structural properties and the availability of several functional groups. Additionally, ion exchange, electrostatic force, and hydrogen bonding formation are all proposed as biosorption mechanisms. As a result, C. tamariscifolia was evaluated to be a sustainable biosorbent for dye biosorption from aqueous solutions.

Kinetic, Isotherm and Thermodynamic Aspects of Zn2+ Biosorption by Spirulina platensis: Optimization of Process Variables by Response Surface Methodology

The aim of this study was to assess the efficiency of Spirulina platensis for removing Zn²⁺ ions from the aqueous solutions. The optimized conditions of 4.48 g/L algal dose, pH of 6.62 and initial zinc concentration of 29.72 mg/L obtained by response surface methodology were employed for Zn²⁺ biosorption by S. platensis and up to 97.90% Zn²⁺ was removed, showing that there is a favorable harmony between the experimental data and model predictions. Different kinetic and equilibrium models were used to characterize the biosorption manner of Spirulina as a biosorbent. The kinetic manner of Zn²⁺ biosorption was well characterized by the pseudo-second-order, implying that the adsorption process is chemical in nature. The Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models were best fit to the equilibrium data. The maximum adsorption capacity of the Langmuir monolayer was 50.7 mg/g. Furthermore, the thermodynamic analysis revealed that Zn²⁺ biosorption was endothermic, spontaneous and feasible. As a result of biosorption process, FTIR, SEM, and EDX investigations indicated noticeable alterations in the algal biomass's properties. Therefore, the dried Spirulina biomass has been shown to be cost-effective and efficient for removing the heavy metals, particularly zinc ions from wastewater, and the method is practicable, and environmentally acceptable.
