Sources, toxicity potential, and human health risk assessment of heavy metals-laden soil and dust of urban and suburban areas as affected by industrial and mining activities

Integrated framework to assess soil potentially toxic element contamination through 3D pollution analysis in a typical mining city

Soil potentially toxic elements (PTEs) pollution of contaminated sites has become a global environmental issue. However, given that previous studies mostly focused on pollution assessment in surface soils, the current status and environmental risks of potentially toxic elements in deeper soils remain unclear. The present study aims to cognize distribution characteristics and spatial autocorrelation, pollution levels, and risk assessment in a stereoscopic environment for soil PTEs through 3D visualization techniques. Pollution levels were assessed in an integrated manner by combining the geoaccumulation index (Igeo), the integrated influence index of soil quality (IICQs), and potential ecological hazard index. Results showed that soil environment at the site was seriously threatened by PTEs, and Cu and Cd were ubiquitous and the predominant pollutants in the study area. The stratigraphic models and pollution plume simulation revealed that pollutants show a decreasing trend with the deepening of the soil layer. The ranking of contamination soil volume is as follows: Cu > Cd > Zn > As > Pb > Cr > Ni. According to the IICQs evaluation, this region was subject to multiple PTE contamination, with more than 60% of the area becoming seriously and highly polluted. In addition, the ecological hazard model revealed the existence of substantial ecological hazards in the soils of the site. The integrated potential ecological risk index (RI) indicated that 45.7%, 10.13%, and 4.15% of the stereoscopic areas were in considerable, high, and very high risks, respectively. The findings could be used as a theoretical reference for applying multiple methods to integrate evaluation through 3D visualization analysis in the assessment and remediation of PTE-contaminated soils.

Spatio-temporal evaluation of metals and metalloids in the water of high Andean livestock micro-watersheds, Amazonas, Peru

Cattle ranching is a fundamental economic activity in northern Peru, where proper management of water resources is crucial. This study, a pioneer in the region, evaluated water quality and its suitability for human consumption, vegetable irrigation, and livestock production. It is also the first study to document the presence of metals and metalloids in vulnerable areas because they are located at the headwaters of river watersheds. The spatiotemporal evaluation of physicochemical parameters, metals, and metalloids was performed in five micro-watersheds (Cabildo, Timbambo, Pomacochas, Atuen, and Ventilla) from water samples collected in the dry season (October 2017) and wet season (March 2018). The parameters were analyzed using microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry. The results were contrasted with international and Peruvian quality standards related to dairy cow production. The highest values of pH, total dissolved solids, and electrical conductivity were reported during the dry season, and the highest turbidity during the wet season. Of the metals evaluated, arsenic (As) was omnipresent in all the micro-watersheds, followed by lead (Pb). In contrast to World Health Organization regulations, concentrations of As, cadmium (Cd), Pb, and iron represent a risk; according to Peruvian regulations, As and Pb exceed the concentrations established for use in animal drinking water and vegetable irrigation, and according to water guidelines for dairy cattle, concentrations of As, Pb, Cd, and Al exceed the permitted limits. The high concentrations of these metals in the study area are attributable to a synergy between natural factors, such as Andean geology and livestock activity. The data reported will allow for proper water resource management, pollution prevention, and the design and adoption of mitigation measures.

Polyaniline-Based Cationic Porous Organic Polymers for Fast and Efficient Anion-Exchange-Driven Capture of Cr2O7 2

Efficient treatment of wastewater contaminated with carcinogenic Cr(VI) has been a long-term challenge for both academic and industrial research efforts. Removal of Cr(VI) species by ion exchange is a relatively simple and efficient method, and its combination with highly tailorable nanomaterials is promising for the treatment of such wastewater. Here, we report a type of cationic porous organic polymer (POP), namely, PTPA-PIP, which can be prepared simply by converting the corresponding aromatic polyamine PTPA to its protonated form, thereby significantly increasing its hydrophilicity and ability to disperse homogeneously in water, crucial for application in water treatment. In addition to detailed characterization of the physicochemical properties of PTPA-PIP (including using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and solid-state NMR techniques), adsorption experiments demonstrate that PTPA-PIP removes low-concentration dichromate anions with very high performance, including excellent exchange capacity (maximum capacity of 230 mg Cr2O7 2-/g PTPA-PIP), ultrafast removal (initial adsorption rate of 83 mg g-1 min-1), excellent selectivity (∼10% loss of adsorption capacity in the presence of 40-fold concentration of competing anions), as well as superior reusability (reusable for at least 5 cycles without compromised performance). These results demonstrate that PTPA-PIP is an outstanding candidate for application in industrial settings for the effective removal of harmful Cr(VI) pollutants in wastewater.

Enhanced adsorption and removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution by amino-functionalized ZIF-8

Zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), which is a special subgroup of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), was synthesized and modified by ethylenediamine (ZIF-8-EDA) to prepare an efficient adsorbent for the high sorption of Cd2+ ions from solution. The synthesized and modified ZIF-8 (ZIF-8-EDA) were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. The optimum conditions for dosage of adsorbent, initial ion concentration, pH, and contact time were 0.05 g/l, 50 mg/l, 6, and 60 min, respectively, for cadmium ion sorption from aqueous solutions with a removal efficiency of 89.7% for ZIF-8 and 93.5% for ZIF-8-EDA. Adsorption kinetics and equilibrium data were analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich equations. The Langmuir model fitted the equilibrium data better than the Freundlich model. According to the Langmuir equation, the maximum uptake for the cadmium ions was 294.11(mg/g). The calculated thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS°) indicated that the adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic at 20-50 °C. Based on the results, the amino functionalized ZIF-8 had improved adsorption performance due to the replacing of the starting linker with organic ligands that had effective functional groups, leading to chemical coordination due to the interaction of metal ions with the non-bonding pair of electrons on the N atoms of the amino functional group. The selectivity toward metal ion adsorption by ZIF-8-EDA was Cd2+ > Pb2+ > Ni2+‏.

Combination of intercropping maize and soybean with root exudate additions reduces metal mobility in soil-plant system under wastewater irrigation

The effects of root exudates and irrigation with treated wastewater on heavy metal mobility and soil bacterial composition under intercropping remain poorly understood. We conducted a pot experiment with maize and soybean grown in monocultures or intercultures, irrigated with either groundwater or treated wastewater. In addition, the pre-collected root exudates from hydroponic culture with mono- or inter-cropped maize and soybean were applied to the soil at four levels (0 %, 16 %, 32 % and 64 %). The results showed that application of root exudates increased plant growth and soil nutrient content. The analysis of "Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution" for higher plant biomass and lower soil Cd and Pb concentrations indicated that the best performance of soybean under treated wastewater irrigation was recorded under intercropping applied with 64 % of exudates, with a performance score of 0.926 and 0.953 for Cd and Pb, respectively. The second-best performance of maize under treated wastewater irrigation was also observed under intercropping applied with 64 % of exudates. Root exudate application reduced heavy metals migration in the soil-plant system, with a greater impact in intercropping than in monocropping. In addition, certain soil microorganisms were also increased with root exudate application, regardless of irrigation water. This study suggests that appropriate application of root exudates could potentially improve plant growth and soil health, and reduce toxic heavy metal concentrations in soils and plants irrigated with treated wastewater.

A novel regional-scale human health risk assessment model for soil heavy metal(loid) pollution based on empirical Bayesian kriging

Soil heavy metal(loid)s contamination caused by rapid urbanization and industrialization seriously affects human health and hinders the global sustainable development goals (SDGs). Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive human health risk assessment (HHRA) studies for multiple land use types at the regional scale. We propose a practical risk assessment framework that integrates empirical Bayesian kriging (EBK), pollution level analyses, and modified HHRA modeling. The concentrations of copper industry-related metals (Cu, Ni, Cd, As, and Hg) in 332 topsoil samples from the south bank of the Yangtze River in Tongling were investigated. Obvious enrichment of Cu, Cd, As, and Hg was detected, and the average concentration of Cu was 5.24 times higher than the background values. The distribution of heavy metal(loid) pollution was typically high in the south and east, and low in the north and west. The mean errors of interpolation for Cu, Ni, and Hg were 0.84, 1.29, and 0, respectively, and the root mean square errors of interpolation for Cd and As were 1.29 and 0.86, respectively. Non-carcinogenic risks of soil heavy metal(loid)s were assessed as acceptable throughout the studied area. The hazard index decreased in the order As (0.448) > Ni (0.0729) > Cd (0.0136) > Hg (9.04 ×10^-4) > Cu (6.41 ×10^-4). Nevertheless, the carcinogenic risks of Ni, Cd, and As in 70-80% of the administrative units (AUs) were between 10^-6 to 10^-4, considered an unacceptable level. Exposure through the oral ingestion route accounted for 88.0-99.2% of the total three exposure routes. It is worth noting that four AUs were considered to be the priority control units, and Ni and As were identified as the priority control soil heavy metal(loid)s. This case demonstrates the feasibility and scientific validity of the new EBK-HHRA framework, which confirms that EBK can effectively predict the spatial distribution patterns of soil heavy metal(loid)s and that modified HHRA models are conducive to risk integration at the regional scale. The EBK-HHRA approach is generic and provides substantial support for risk source identification and risk management of soil heavy metal(loid)s contamination at the regional scale.

Mobility, bioaccumulation in plants, and risk assessment of metals in soils

Heavy metal contamination of soils is one of the main factors contributing to soil quality decline and loss of biodiversity, which is also associated with plant contamination, as metals accumulate in the surface layer of soils and then enter the trophic chain. The aims of the study were to assess the mobility and bioavailability of metals in soils to plants, and to estimate the ecological and health risks associated with heavy metal content in soils. 320 topsoil and 206 plant samples were collected. Fractional analysis showed that for most of the samples, there was no or low risk associated with the mobility of Cr, Pb, Cu, Ni, Zn, and low and medium for Cd. High and very high metal release risk was only shown for Cd (28 % of samples), and Zn and Pb (2 % of samples). The bioaccumulation factor found moderate levels of accumulation for Cd, Zn, Cu, Ni. High accumulation of Cd and Zn was found in 38 % and 15 % of plant samples. Alivibrio fischeri proved to be a more sensitive indicator of soil ecotoxicity compared to Sinapis alba. In the 81 % of the soil samples found a low probability of adverse effects on ecological receptors associated with exposure to soilborne metals. In the case of human health risk, no harmful health effects were observed due to accidental ingestion of metal-containing soils in the study area. In assessing metal risks, the choice of indicators is crucial. Moreover, the properties of soils have a significant impact on the mobility of metals and their bioaccumulation by plants. This means that the more varied the choice of indicators, the more comprehensive, reliable and close to reality the risk assessment of heavy metals in soils will be.
