The cheetah optimizer: a nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm for large-scale optimization problems

The emergence of microgrids arises from the growing integration of Renewable Energy Resources (RES) and Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) into Distribution Networks (DNs). Effective integration, coordination, and control of Multiple Microgrids (MMGs) whereas navigating the complexities of energy transition within this context poses a significant challenge. The dynamic operation of MMGs is a challenge faced by the traditional distributed hierarchical control techniques. The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques is a promising way to improve the control and dynamic operation of MMGs in future smart DNs. In this paper, an innovative hybrid optimization technique that originates from Cheetah Optimization (CHO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) techniques is proposed, known as HYCHOPSO. Extensive benchmark testing validates HYCHOPSO's superiority over CHO and PSO in terms of convergence performance. The objective for this hybridization stems from the complementary strengths of CHO and PSO. CHO demonstrates rapid convergence in local search spaces, while PSO excels in global exploration. By combining these techniques, the aim is to leverage their respective advantages and enhance the algorithm's overall performance in addressing complex optimization problems. The contribution of this paper offering a unique approach to addressing optimization challenges in microgrid systems. Through a comprehensive comparative study, HYCHOPSO is evaluated against various metaheuristic optimization approaches, demonstrating superior performance, particularly in optimizing the design parameters of Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers for hierarchical control systems within microgrids. This contribution expands the repertoire of available optimization methodologies and offers practical solutions to critical challenges in microgrid optimization, enhancing the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of microgrid operations. HYCHOPSO achieves its optimal score within fewer than 50 iterations, unlike CHO, GWO, PSO, Hybrid-GWO-PSO, and SSIA-PSO, which stabilize after around 200 iterations. Across various benchmark functions, HYCHOPSO consistently demonstrates the lowest mean values, attains scores closer to the optimal values of the benchmark functions, underscoring its robust convergence capabilities.the proposed HYCHOPSO algorithm, paired with a PI controller for distributed hierarchical control, minimizes errors and enhances system reliability during dynamic MMG operations. Using HYCHOPSO framework, an accurate power sharing, voltage/frequency stability, seamless grid-to-island transition, and smooth resynchronization are achieved. This enhances the real application's reliability, flexibility, scalability and robustness.

Hippopotamus optimization algorithm: a novel nature-inspired optimization algorithm

The novelty of this article lies in introducing a novel stochastic technique named the Hippopotamus Optimization (HO) algorithm. The HO is conceived by drawing inspiration from the inherent behaviors observed in hippopotamuses, showcasing an innovative approach in metaheuristic methodology. The HO is conceptually defined using a trinary-phase model that incorporates their position updating in rivers or ponds, defensive strategies against predators, and evasion methods, which are mathematically formulated. It attained the top rank in 115 out of 161 benchmark functions in finding optimal value, encompassing unimodal and high-dimensional multimodal functions, fixed-dimensional multimodal functions, as well as the CEC 2019 test suite and CEC 2014 test suite dimensions of 10, 30, 50, and 100 and Zigzag Pattern benchmark functions, this suggests that the HO demonstrates a noteworthy proficiency in both exploitation and exploration. Moreover, it effectively balances exploration and exploitation, supporting the search process. In light of the results from addressing four distinct engineering design challenges, the HO has effectively achieved the most efficient resolution while concurrently upholding adherence to the designated constraints. The performance evaluation of the HO algorithm encompasses various aspects, including a comparison with WOA, GWO, SSA, PSO, SCA, FA, GOA, TLBO, MFO, and IWO recognized as the most extensively researched metaheuristics, AOA as recently developed algorithms, and CMA-ES as high-performance optimizers acknowledged for their success in the IEEE CEC competition. According to the statistical post hoc analysis, the HO algorithm is determined to be significantly superior to the investigated algorithms. Optimizing dynamic economic dispatch through an enhanced Cheetah-inspired algorithm for integrated renewable energy and demand-side management

This study presents the Enhanced Cheetah Optimizer Algorithm (ECOA) designed to tackle the intricate real-world challenges of dynamic economic dispatch (DED). These complexities encompass demand-side management (DSM), integration of non-conventional energy sources, and the utilization of pumped-storage hydroelectric units. Acknowledging the variability of solar and wind energy sources and the existence of a pumped-storage hydroelectric system, this study integrates a solar-wind-thermal energy system. The DSM program not only enhances power grid security but also lowers operational costs. The research addresses the DED problem with and without DSM implementation to analyze its impact. Demonstrating effectiveness on two test systems, the suggested method's efficacy is showcased. The recommended method's simulation results have been compared to those obtained using Cheetah Optimizer Algorithm (COA) and Grey Wolf Optimizer. The optimization results indicate that, for both the 10-unit and 20-unit systems, the proposed ECOA algorithm achieves savings of 0.24% and 0.43%, respectively, in operation costs when Dynamic Economic Dispatch is conducted with Demand-Side Management (DSM). This underscores the advantageous capability of DSM in minimizing costs and enhancing the economic efficiency of the power systems. Our ECOA has greater adaptability and reliability, making it a promising solution for addressing multi-objective energy management difficulties within microgrids, particularly when demand response mechanisms are incorporated. Furthermore, the suggested ECOA has the ability to elucidate the multi-objective dynamic optimal power flow problem in IEEE standard test systems, particularly when electric vehicles and renewable energy sources are integrated.

Prediction of Uranium Adsorption Capacity in Radioactive Wastewater Treatment with Biochar

Recently, Japan's discharge of wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear disaster into the ocean has attracted widespread attention. To effectively address the challenge of separating uranium, the focus is on finding a healthy and environmentally friendly way to adsorb uranium using biochar. In this paper, a BP neural network is combined with each of the four meta-heuristic algorithms, namely Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Differential Evolution (DE), Cheetah Optimization (CO) and Fick's Law Algorithm (FLA), to construct four prediction models for the uranium adsorption capacity in the treatment of radioactive wastewater with biochar: PSO-BP, DE-BP, CO-BP, FLA-BP. The coefficient of certainty (R2), error rate and CEC test set are used to judge the accuracy of the model based on the BP neural network. The results show that the Fick's Law Algorithm (FLA) has a better search ability and convergence speed than the other algorithms. The importance of the input parameters is quantitatively assessed and ranked using XGBoost in order to analyze which parameters have a greater impact on the predictions of the model, which indicates that the parameters with the greatest impact are the initial concentration of uranium (C0, mg/L) and the mass percentage of total carbon (C, %). To sum up, four prediction models can be applied to study the adsorption of uranium by biochar materials during actual experiments, and the advantage of Fick's Law Algorithm (FLA) is more obvious. The method of model prediction can significantly reduce the radiation risk caused by uranium to human health during the actual experiment and provide some reference for the efficient treatment of uranium wastewater by biochar.

A hybrid algorithm of grey wolf optimizer and harris hawks optimization for solving global optimization problems with improved convergence performance

The grey wolf optimizer is an effective and well-known meta-heuristic algorithm, but it also has the weaknesses of insufficient population diversity, falling into local optimal solutions easily, and unsatisfactory convergence speed. Therefore, we propose a hybrid grey wolf optimizer (HGWO), based mainly on the exploitation phase of the harris hawk optimization. It also includes population initialization with Latin hypercube sampling, a nonlinear convergence factor with local perturbations, some extended exploration strategies. In HGWO, the grey wolves can have harris hawks-like flight capabilities during position updates, which greatly expands the search range and improves global searchability. By incorporating a greedy algorithm, grey wolves will relocate only if the new location is superior to the current one. This paper assesses the performance of the hybrid grey wolf optimizer (HGWO) by comparing it with other heuristic algorithms and enhanced schemes of the grey wolf optimizer. The evaluation is conducted using 23 classical benchmark test functions and CEC2020. The experimental results reveal that the HGWO algorithm performs well in terms of its global exploration ability, local exploitation ability, convergence speed, and convergence accuracy. Additionally, the enhanced algorithm demonstrates considerable advantages in solving engineering problems, thus substantiating its effectiveness and applicability.

A hierarchical multi-leadership sine cosine algorithm to dissolving global optimization and data classification: The COVID-19 case study

The Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA) is an outstanding optimizer that is appreciably used to dissolve complicated real-world problems. Nevertheless, this algorithm lacks sufficient population diversification and a sufficient balance between exploration and exploitation. So, effective techniques are required to tackle the SCA's fundamental shortcomings. Accordingly, the present paper suggests an improved version of SCA called Hierarchical Multi-Leadership SCA (HMLSCA) which uses an effective hierarchical multi-leadership search mechanism to lead the search process on multiple paths. The efficiency of the HMLSCA has been appraised and compared with a set of famous metaheuristic algorithms to dissolve the classical eighteen benchmark functions and thirty CEC 2017 test suites. The results demonstrate that the HMLSCA outperforms all compared algorithms and that the proposed algorithm provided a promising efficiency. Moreover, the HMLSCA was applied to handle the medicine data classification by optimizing the support vector machine's (SVM) parameters and feature weighting in eight datasets. The experiential outcomes verify the productivity of the HMLSCA with the highest classification accuracy and a gain scoring 1.00 Friedman mean rank versus the other evaluated metaheuristic algorithms. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm was used to diagnose COVID-19, in which it attained the topmost accuracy of 98% in diagnosing the infection on the COVID-19 dataset, which proves the performance of the proposed search strategy.

Multi-UAV Cooperative Trajectory Planning Based on the Modified Cheetah Optimization Algorithm

The capacity for autonomous functionality serves as the fundamental ability and driving force for the cross-generational upgrading of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). With the disruptive transformation of artificial intelligence technology, autonomous trajectory planning based on intelligent algorithms has emerged as a key technique for enhancing UAVs' capacity for autonomous behavior, thus holding significant research value. To address the challenges of UAV trajectory planning in complex 3D environments, this paper proposes a multi-UAV cooperative trajectory-planning method based on a Modified Cheetah Optimization (MCO) algorithm. Firstly, a spatiotemporal cooperative trajectory planning model is established, incorporating UAV-cooperative constraints and performance constraints. Evaluation criteria, including fuel consumption, altitude, and threat distribution field cost functions, are introduced. Then, based on its parent Cheetah Optimization (CO) algorithm, the MCO algorithm incorporates a logistic chaotic mapping strategy and an adaptive search agent strategy, thereby improving the home-returning mechanism. Finally, extensive simulation experiments are conducted using a considerably large test dataset containing functions with the following four characteristics: unimodal, multimodal, separable, and inseparable. Meanwhile, a strategy for dimensionality reduction searching is employed to solve the problem of autonomous trajectory planning in real-world scenarios. The results of a conducted simulation demonstrate that the MCO algorithm outperforms several other related algorithms, showcasing smaller trajectory costs, a faster convergence speed, and stabler performance. The proposed algorithm exhibits a certain degree of correctness, effectiveness, and advancement in solving the problem of multi-UAV cooperative trajectory planning.

Underwater wireless sensor network-based multihop data transmission using hybrid cat cheetah optimization algorithm

For the conservation and sustainable use of the oceanic environment, monitoring of underwater regions is ineluctable and is effectuated with the aid of an underwater wireless sensor network. It is accoutered with smart equipment, vehicles and sensors and utilized for the transmission of acquired data from the monitoring region and forwarded to the sink nodes (SN) where the data are retrieved. Moreover, data transmission from sensor nodes to SN is complicated by the aquatic environment's inherent complexities. To surpass those issues, the work in this article focusesto propose a Hybrid Cat Cheetah optimization algorithm (HC²OA) that purveys the energy efficient clustering based routing. The network is then partitioned into numerous clusters, each of which is led by a cluster head (CH) and comprised of many sub-clusters (CM). Based on the factors such as distance and residual energy the CH selection is optimized and collects data from the respective CMs and forwarded to the SN with a multi-hop transmission approach. The proposed HC²OA chooses the optimized multi-hop route from the CH to SN. Thus mitigates the complexities over multi-hop routing and CH selection. Simulations are effectuated in the NS2 simulator and analyzed the performance. The results of the study show that the proposed work has significant advantages over state-of-the-art works in terms of network lifetime, packet delivery ratio, and energy consumption. The energy consumption of the proposed work is 0.2 J with a packet delivery ratio is 95%.The network life time of proposed work, with respect to the coverage area around 14 km is approximately 60 h.

Multi-objective pathfinder algorithm for multi-objective optimal power flow problem with random renewable energy sources: wind, photovoltaic and tidal

In this paper, the multi-objective optimal power flow (MOOPF) problem optimization objectives focus on four optimization objectives: generation cost, emission, real power loss and voltage deviation (VD). Three renewable energy sources with successful industrial applications, including wind energy, solar energy, and tidal energy are introduced. Renewable energy supply is uncertain, so Weibull distribution probability, lognormal probability and Gumbel probability are used to calculate the instability and intermittency of wind energy, solar energy and tidal energy, respectively. The inclusion of four energy supplies on the IEEE-30 test system and the consideration of renewable energy reserves and penalty cost calculation improve the realism of the model. In order to obtain the control parameters that minimize the four optimization objectives, a named multi-objective pathfinder algorithm (MOPFA) based on elite dominance and crowding distance was proposed to solve this multi-objective optimization problem. Simulation results show the feasibility of the model, and MOPFA can get more evenly distributed Pareto front and provide more diverse solutions. A compromise solution was selected by the fuzzy decision system. Comparison with the recently published literature also shows that the proposed model can effectively reduce emissions and other indicators. In addition, the statistical test results show that MOPFA's multi-objective optimization performance ranks first. In solving this complex optimization problem, results show the MOPFA is superior to other multi-objective algorithms in optimization accuracy and speed.

An exhaustive review of the metaheuristic algorithms for search and optimization: taxonomy, applications, and open challenges

As the world moves towards industrialization, optimization problems become more challenging to solve in a reasonable time. More than 500 new metaheuristic algorithms (MAs) have been developed to date, with over 350 of them appearing in the last decade. The literature has grown significantly in recent years and should be thoroughly reviewed. In this study, approximately 540 MAs are tracked, and statistical information is also provided. Due to the proliferation of MAs in recent years, the issue of substantial similarities between algorithms with different names has become widespread. This raises an essential question: can an optimization technique be called 'novel' if its search properties are modified or almost equal to existing methods? Many recent MAs are said to be based on 'novel ideas', so they are discussed. Furthermore, this study categorizes MAs based on the number of control parameters, which is a new taxonomy in the field. MAs have been extensively employed in various fields as powerful optimization tools, and some of their real-world applications are demonstrated. A few limitations and open challenges have been identified, which may lead to a new direction for MAs in the future. Although researchers have reported many excellent results in several research papers, review articles, and monographs during the last decade, many unexplored places are still waiting to be discovered. This study will assist newcomers in understanding some of the major domains of metaheuristics and their real-world applications. We anticipate this resource will also be useful to our research community.
