Abstract
Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) pollution has become a major environmental risk, and green plants can mitigate air pollution by regulating their enzymatic activity, osmoregulatory substances, photosynthetic pigments, and other biochemical characteristics. The present investigation aims to evaluate the mitigation potential of five common evergreen tree species (Photinia serrulata, Ligustrum lucidum, Eriobotrya japonica, Euonymus japonicus, Pittosporum tobira) against air pollution and to assess the effect of dust retention on plant physiological functions exposed to three different pollution levels (road, campus, and park). The results found that the amount of dust retained per unit leaf area of the plants was proportional to the mass concentration of atmospheric particulate matter in the environment, and that dust accumulation was higher on the road and campus than in the park. There were significant differences in dust retention among the five tree species, with the highest leaf dust accumulation observed for E. japonica (5.45 g·m-2), and the lowest for P. tobira (1.53 g·m-2). In addition, the increase in PM adsorption by different plants was uneven with increasing pollution levels, with significant decreases in chlorophyll content, photosynthetic and transpiration rate. From a physiological perspective, P. tobira exhibited greater potential to respond to PM pollution. Biochemical indicators suggested that PM pollution caused changes in plant protective enzyme activities, with a decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities, as well as promoting membrane lipid peroxidation, and appropriate stress also enables plants to counteract oxidative damage. In particular, PM exposure also induced stomatal constriction. Overall, PM retention was significantly associated with physiological and photosynthetic traits. In conclusion, our study contributes to the understanding of the effects of PM on plant physiology. Furthermore, it also provides insights into the selection of plants that are tolerant to PM pollution.

Abstract
Magnetite nanoparticles are small, strongly magnetic iron oxide particles which are produced during high-temperature combustion and friction processes and form part of the outdoor air pollution mixture. These particles can translocate to the brain and have been found in human brain tissue. In this study, we estimated associations between within-city spatial variations in concentrations of magnetite nanoparticles in outdoor fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and brain cancer incidence. We performed a cohort study of 1.29 million participants in four cycles of the Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohort in Montreal and Toronto, Canada who were followed for malignant brain tumour (glioma) incidence. As a proxy for magnetite nanoparticle content, we measured the susceptibility of anhysteretic remanent magnetization (χARM) in PM2.5 samples (N = 124 in Montreal, N = 110 in Toronto), and values were assigned to residential locations. Stratified Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (per IQR change in volume-normalized χARM). ARM was not associated with brain tumour incidence (HR = 0.998, 95% CI 0.988, 1.009) after adjusting for relevant potential confounders. Although we found no evidence of an important relationship between within-city spatial variations in airborne magnetite nanoparticles and brain tumour incidence, further research is needed to evaluate this understudied exposure, and other measures of exposure to magnetite nanoparticles should be considered.

Abstract
This study investigated influences of leaf traits on particulate matter (PM) wash-off and (re)capture (i.e., net removal) over time. Leaf samples were taken before and after three rainfall events from a range of 10 evergreen woody plants (including five different leaf types), which were positioned with an optical particle counter alongside a busy road. Scanning electron microscopy was used to quantify the density (no./mm2), mass (μg/cm2), and elemental composition of deposited particles. To enable leaf area comparison between scale-like leaves and other leaf types, a novel metric (FSA: foliage surface area per unit branch length) was developed, which may be utilised by future research. Vehicle-related particles constituted 15 % of total deposition, and there was a notable 50 % decrease in the proportion of tyre wear particles after rainfall. T. baccata presented the lowest proportion (11.1 %) of vehicle-related particle deposition but the most consistent performance in terms of net PM removal. Only four of the 10 plant specimens (C. japonica, C. lawsoniana, J. chinensis, and T. baccata) presented effective PM wash-off across all particle size fractions and rainfall intensities, with a generally positive relationship observed between rainfall intensity and wash-off. Mass deposition was more significantly determined by particle size than number density. Interestingly, larger particles were also less easily washed off than smaller particles. Some traits typically considered to be advantageous (e.g., greater hairiness) may in fact hinder net removal over time due to retention under rainfall. Small leaf area is one trait that may promote both accumulation and wash-off. However, FSA was found to be the most influential trait, with an inverse relationship between FSA and wash-off efficacy. This finding poses trade-offs and opportunities for green infrastructure design, which are discussed. Finally, numerous areas for future research are recommended, underlining the importance of systems approaches in developing vegetation management frameworks.

Abstract
One aim of roadside green infrastructure (GI) is to mitigate exposure to local, traffic-generated pollutants. Here, we determine the efficacy of roadside GI in improving local air quality through the deposition and/or dispersion of airborne particulate matter (PM). PM was collected on both pumped air filters and on the leaves of a recently installed 'tredge' (trees managed as a head-high hedge) at an open road environment next to a primary school in Manchester, U.K. The magnetic properties of PM deposited on leaves and filters (size fractions PM10 and PM2.5) were deduced from hysteresis loops, first-order reversal curves (FORCs), and low-temperature remanence measurements. These were complemented with electron microscopy to identify changes in magnetic PM concentration downwind of the tredge/GI. We show that the tredge is permeable to airflow using a simple CO2 tracer experiment; hence, it allows interception and subsequent deposition of PM on its leaves. Magnetic loadings per m3 of air from filters (PM10 saturation magnetisation, Ms, at 5 K) were reduced by 40 % behind the tredge and a further 63 % in the playground; a total reduction of 78 % compared to roadside air. For the PM2.5 fraction, the reduction in magnetic loading behind the tredge was remarkable (82 %), reflecting efficient diffusional capture of sub-5 nm Fe-oxide particles by the tredge. Some direct mixing of roadside and playground air occurs at the back of the playground, caused by air flow over, and/or through gaps in, the slowly-permeable tredge. The magnetic loading on tredge leaves increased over successive days, capturing ~23 % of local, traffic-derived PM10. Using a heuristic two-dimensional turbulent mixing model, we assess the limited dispersion of PM < 22.5 μm induced by eddies in the tredge wake. This study demonstrates that PM deposition on leaves reduces exposure significantly in this school playground setting; hence, providing a cost-effective mitigation strategy.

Abstract
To address the diesel particulate matter pollution problem at the 12,306 continuous mining face of Shangwan coal mine, the spatial and temporal evolution law of diesel particulate matter generated at the three locations of the shuttle car head tunnel, contact alley, and support tunnel under the pressure-in ventilation condition of the double lane of the continuous mining face was studied by numerical simulation. The results show that the highest diesel particulate matter concentration at the shuttle car discharge is about 144.17 mg/m3, which seriously affects the health of miners. The highest diesel particulate matter concentration at the shuttle car tunnel is 52.58 mg/m3, and at the contact alley, the diesel particulate matter diffusion space is limited by the compression of the space inside the contact alley by the shuttle car machine body and the alley wall, which makes the diesel particulate matter accumulate here, forming a high diesel particulate matter concentration distribution area with a concentration value of 112.75 mg/m3. When supporting the roadway at the shuttle, diesel particulate matter accumulates in the range of X = 55 m ~ 60 m, Y = 0 m ~ 4 m, and Z = 23.4 m ~ 29.4 m. According to the degree of DPM pollution in different areas, different individual protective equipment is used to obtain different levels of pollution protection.
