Drought characterization over Indian sub-continent using GRACE-based indices

Spatiotemporal distribution of groundwater drought using GRACE-based satellite estimates: a case study of Lower Gangetic Basin, India

Droughts frequently occurring in India have significant societal, economic, and environmental effects. The lack of direct measurements of groundwater in location and time hinders quantitative methods to analyse the intricate nature of groundwater drought. This work used the datasets derived from the Gravity and Climate Experiment (GRACE and GRACE-FO) and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) to extensively analyse Groundwater Storage changes in the Lower Gangetic Basin (LGB) using unique hydrological parameters between the years 2003 and 2022. The analysis highlights that the GRACE-derived terrestrial water storage anomaly in the LGB decreased significantly (-12.12 mm/yr), and the amount of Groundwater Storage Anomaly (GWSA) decreased similarly (-10.80 mm/yr), while in the GRACE-FO period, a positive trend has been noticed in TWSA (33.96 mm/yr) and GWSA (64.8 mm/yr) respectively. A drought indicator called the GRACE-derived groundwater drought index (GGDI) has been computed for the entire LGB region. A traditional drought study viz. Standardised Precipitation Index (SPI) was performed over LGB to justify the results of the GGDI. The results from GGDI study effectively matched the periods of significant drought occurrences with the 12-month SPI time series. From the GGDI, this study examined groundwater drought's spatial distribution, temporal evolution, and trend (Modified Mann Kendall trend) aspects. According to research findings, the LGB experienced three major drought periods between 2009-2010, 2019 (moderate), and 2015-2016 (severe). The study offers reliable quantitative data on the evolution of GRACE-derived groundwater drought, which may add a new perspective to additional drought research in the densely populated study area, which depends majorly on agriculture, livestock and less skilled water-intensive industries such as leather and textile industries in a sub-tropical climate. This paradigm incorporates changes in groundwater resources caused by human activities and climate change, paving the way for measuring progress towards sustainable use and water security.

Melatonin improves drought stress tolerance of pepper (Capsicum annuum) plants via upregulating nitrogen metabolism

While ameliorating effects of melatonin (MT) on abiotic stress tolerance in plants are widely reported, the mechanism that underlies this process remains elusive. This work investigated mechanisms by which MT improved drought tolerance in pepper (Capsicum annuum ) plants. A foliar spray of 0.1mM MT treatment was applied to plants grown at 80% and 40% of full field capacity for 3days. Drought stress caused a significant decrease in plant dry weight, relative water content, leaf water potential, PSII efficiency (F v /F m ratio), chlorophyll, soluble protein, leaf and root nitrogen content. Drought increased hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde (MDA), nitrate, ammonium, free amino acids, soluble sugars, proline and glycine betaine. Drought also increased peroxidase (POD), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and catalase (CAT) activities, electrolyte leakage (EL) and methylglyoxal (MG). MT pre-treatment reduced oxidative stress and improved nitrogen metabolism by activating various enzymes such as nitrate reductase (NR), nitrite reductase (NiR), glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate synthetase (GOGAT) and glutamine dehydrogenase (GDH) activities. It also activated enzymes related to the glyoxalase system (Gly I and Gly II) and decreased NO3 - , NH4 + and free amino acid content. Our study suggests a cost-effective and sustainable solution to improve crop productivity in water-limited conditions, by enhancing plant growth, photosynthesis and nitrogen content.

Estimation of regional meteorological aridity and drought characteristics in Baluchistan province, Pakistan

Droughts and prevailing arid conditions have a significant impacts on the natural environment, agriculture, and human life. To analyze the regional characteristics of drought in Baluchistan province, the aridity index (AI) and standardized potential evapotranspiration index (SPEI) were used in. The study analyzed the rainfall, temperature, and potential evapotranspiration (PET) data and the same were used for the calculation of AI as well as SPEI to find out the drought spells during the study period. The linear regression and Mann-Kendall test were applied to calculate the trend in AI as well as in SPEI results. The AI results revealed that most of the meteorological stations are arid and semi-arid, where the highest increasing aridity is noted at Kalat (0.0065/year). The results of the SPEI at 1 and 6-months identified the extreme to severe drought spell during 1998-2002 in all meteorological stations of Baluchistan province. The distinct drought spells identified from the SPEI results were in the years 1998-2003, 2006-2010, 2015-2016 and 2019. The drought frequency results showed highest frequency percentage at Lasbella (46%) of extreme to severe drought. The Mann-Kendall trend results showed negative trend in monthly AI and 1-month SPEI results and most significant trend was observed in April and October months, this shows that aridity and drought in the region are decreasing to some extent except Dalbandin and Lasbella observed increasing trend in winter season (November to January months) and Kalat met-station observed increasing trend in June. Prior investigation and planning of drought situations can help in controlling the far-reaching consequences on environment and human society.
