Direct quantification of surface barriers for mass transfer in nanoporous crystalline materials

Decorating the Node of a Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Framework to Tune Adsorption Behavior and Surface Permeation

Surface barriers are commonly observed in nanoporous materials. Although researchers have explored methods to repair defects or create flawless crystals to mitigate surface barriers, these approaches may not always be practical or readily achievable in targeted metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In our study, we propose an alternative approach focusing on the introduction of diverse ligands onto a MOF-808 node to finely adjust its adsorption and mass transport characteristics. Significantly, our findings indicate that while adsorption curves can be inferred based on the MOF's chemical composition and the probing molecule, surface permeabilities exhibit variations dependent on the specific probe utilized and the incorporated ligand. Our investigation, considering van der Waals forces exclusively between the adsorbate (e.g., n-hexane, propane, and benzene) and the adsorbent, revealed that augmenting these interactions can indeed improve surface permeation to a certain extent. Conversely, strong adsorption resulting from hydrogen bonding interactions, particularly with water in modified MOFs, led to compromised permeation within the MOF crystals. These outcomes provide valuable insights for the porous materials community and offer guidance in the development of adsorbents with enhanced affinity and superior mass transport properties for gases and vapors.

Structured Catalysts and Catalytic Processes: Transport and Reaction Perspectives

The structure of catalysts determines the performance of catalytic processes. Intrinsically, the electronic and geometric structures influence the interaction between active species and the surface of the catalyst, which subsequently regulates the adsorption, reaction, and desorption behaviors. In recent decades, the development of catalysts with complex structures, including bulk, interfacial, encapsulated, and atomically dispersed structures, can potentially affect the electronic and geometric structures of catalysts and lead to further control of the transport and reaction of molecules. This review describes comprehensive understandings on the influence of electronic and geometric properties and complex catalyst structures on the performance of relevant heterogeneous catalytic processes, especially for the transport and reaction over structured catalysts for the conversions of light alkanes and small molecules. The recent research progress of the electronic and geometric properties over the active sites, specifically for theoretical descriptors developed in the recent decades, is discussed at the atomic level. The designs and properties of catalysts with specific structures are summarized. The transport phenomena and reactions over structured catalysts for the conversions of light alkanes and small molecules are analyzed. At the end of this review, we present our perspectives on the challenges for the further development of structured catalysts and heterogeneous catalytic processes.

Geometry and Chemistry: Influence of Pore Functionalization on Molecular Transport and Diffusion in Solvent-Filled Zirconium Metal-Organic Frameworks

Postsynthetic modification (PSM) of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) enables incorporation of diverse functionalities in pores for chemical separations, drug delivery, and heterogeneous catalysis. However, the effect of PSM on molecular transport, which is essential for most applications of MOFs, has been rarely studied. In this paper, we used perfluoroalkane-functionalized Zr-MOF NU-1008 as a platform to systematically interrogate transport processes and mechanisms in solvated pores. We anchored perfluoroalkanes onto NU-1008 nodes by solvent-assisted ligand incorporation (SALI-n, with n = 3, 5, 7, and 9 denoting the number of fluorinated carbons). Transport of a luminescent molecule, BODIPY, through individual crystallites of four versions of methanol-filled SALI-n was monitored by confocal fluorescence microscopy as a function of time and location. In comparison with the parent NU-1008, the diffusivity of the probe molecules within SALI-n declined by 2- to 7-fold depending on chain length and loading, presumably due to the reduction in pore diameter or adsorptive interactions with perfluoroalkyl chains. Atomistic simulations were performed to uncover the microscopic behavior of the BODIPY diffusion in SALI-n. The perfluoroalkyl chains are observed to stay close to the pore walls, instead of extending toward the pore center. BODIPY molecules, which preferably interact with linkers, were pushed to the interior of the channels as the chain length increased, resulting in solvated diffusion and minor differences in the short-time mobility of BODIPY in SALI-n. This suggested that the observed decline of transport diffusivity in SALI-n mainly stemmed from the reduction in the pore size when these flexible chains are present. We anticipate that this proof of concept will assist in understanding how pore functionalization can physically and chemically affect mass transport in MOFs and will be useful in further guiding the design of PSM to realize the optimal performance of MOFs for various applications.

Hyperloop-like diffusion of long-chain molecules under confinement

The ultrafast transport of adsorbates in confined spaces is a goal pursued by scientists. However, diffusion will be generally slower in nano-channels, as confined spaces inhibit motion. Here we show that the movement of long-chain molecules increase with a decrease in pore size, indicating that confined spaces promote transport. Inspired by a hyperloop running on a railway, we established a superfast pathway for molecules in zeolites with nano-channels. Rapid diffusion is achieved when the long-chain molecules keep moving linearly, as well as when they run along the center of the channel, while this phenomenon do not exist for short-chain molecules. This hyperloop-like diffusion is unique for long-chain molecules in a confined space and is further verified by diffusion experiments. These results offer special insights into molecule diffusion under confinement, providing a reference for the selection of efficient catalysts with rapid transport in the industrial field.

Steering interface effect of H-ZSM-5 zeolites with tailored surface barriers to improve their catalytic performances

An efficient zeolite interface with optimized surface barriers was tailored by passivating the hydroxyl-group defects at surfaces or near pore mouths. The surface permeability of the modified zeolite was almost 90% greater than that of the pristine one, leading to remarkable improvements in C=2-3 selectivity and an anti-inactivation rate of 75% for the catalytic cracking reaction.

Molecular transport in zeolite catalysts: depicting an integrated picture from macroscopic to microscopic scales

Increasing social sustainability triggers the persistent progress of industrial catalysis in energy transformation and chemical production. Zeolites have been demonstrated to be pivotal catalysts in chemical industries due to their moderate acidity and versatile well-defined pore structures. However, in the context of enhancing the performances of zeolite catalysts, the perspectives on the diffusion regulations within the pores and channels in the bulk phases or external surfaces of the zeolites are often overlooked. Establishing the structure-transport-reactivity relationships in heterogeneous catalysis can provide rational guidelines to design high-performance catalysts. Herein, this tutorial review attempts to systematically depict an integrated picture of molecular transport behaviors in zeolite catalysts from macroscopic to microscopic perspectives. The advances in the accurate diffusion measurements employing both macroscopic and microscopic techniques are briefly introduced. The diffusion characteristics in zeolite catalysts under working conditions (e.g., high temperature, multi-components, and reaction coupling) are then addressed. The macroscopic internal diffusion and the microscopic diffusion occurring in the micro-zones of zeolite crystals (e.g., surface diffusion, diffusion anisotropy, and confined diffusion) are reviewed and discussed in more detail. These diffusion behaviors highly impact the underlying reaction mechanism, catalytic performances, and catalyst optimization strategies. Finally, the multi-type pore systems of practical zeolite catalysts in industrial reactors and their transport behaviors are analyzed. The fully-crystalline monolithic zeolites in the absence of binders are highlighted as rising-star catalytic materials for industrial applications. The research challenges in this field and the potential future development directions are summarized.

Multi-scale dynamical cross-talk in zeolite-catalyzed methanol and dimethyl ether conversions

Establishing a comprehensive understanding of the dynamical multiscale diffusion and reaction process is crucial for zeolite shape-selective catalysis and is urgently demanded in academia and industry. So far, diffusion and reaction for methanol and dimethyl ether (DME) conversions have usually been studied separately and focused on a single scale. Herein, we decipher the dynamical molecular diffusion and reaction process for methanol and DME conversions within the zeolite material evolving with time, at multiple scales, from the scale of molecules to single catalyst crystal and catalyst ensemble. Microscopic intracrystalline diffusivity is successfully decoupled from the macroscopic experiments and verified by molecular dynamics simulation. Spatiotemporal analyses of the confined carbonaceous species allow us to track the migratory reaction fronts in a single catalyst crystal and the catalyst ensemble. The constrained diffusion of DME relative to methanol alleviates the high local chemical potential of the reactant by attenuating its local enrichment, enhancing the utilization efficiency of the inner active sites of the catalyst crystal. In this context, the dynamical cross-talk behaviors of material, diffusion and reaction occurring at multiple scales is uncovered. Zeolite catalysis not only reflects the reaction characteristics of heterogeneous catalysis, but also provides enhanced, moderate or suppressed local reaction kinetics through the special catalytic micro-environment, which leads to the heterogeneity of diffusion and reaction at multiple scales, thereby realizing efficient and shape-selective catalysis.

Dynamic confinement of SAPO-17 cage on the selectivity control of syngas conversion

The OXZEO (oxide−zeolite) bifunctional catalyst concept has enabled selective syngas conversion to a series of value-added chemicals and fuels such as light olefins, aromatics and gasoline. Herein we report for the first time a dynamic confinement of SAPO-17 cages on the selectivity control of syngas conversion observed during an induction period. Structured illumination microscopy, intelligent gravimetric analysis, UV-Raman, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer analysis indicate that this is attributed to the evolution of carbonaceous species as the reaction proceeds, which gradually reduces the effective space inside the cage. Consequently, the diffusion of molecules is hindered and the hindering is much more prominent for larger molecules such as C₄₊. As a result, the selectivity of ethylene is enhanced whereas that of C₄₊ is suppressed. Beyond the induction period, the product selectivity levels off. For instance, ethylene selectivity levels off at 44% and propylene selectivity at 31%, as well as CO conversion at 27%. The findings here bring a new fundamental understanding that will guide further development of selective catalysts for olefin synthesis based on the OXZEO concept.

K-Chabazite Zeolite Nanocrystal Aggregates for Highly Efficient Methane Separation

Methane (CH₄ ) enrichment and purification is of great significance for increasing the heating value of unconventional natural gas sources and curtailing its effect on global warming. For a long time, commercial adsorbents for CH₄ separation have been hampered by low adsorption capacities, sub-optimal adsorption selectivities, or slow diffusion rates, which have significantly restricted separation productivity. Herein, we report a facile and green seed-passaging method to fabricate donut-like macro-meso-micro hierarchical zeolite K-Chabazite nanocrystal aggregates. This consecutive seed-inducing method requires no organic template. By utilizing this unique nanocrystallization technique, the CH₄ adsorption capacity, gas diffusion rate, and separation productivity of the resultant material are dramatically increased compared with those of commercially available adsorbents, thus setting a new benchmark in CH₄ /N₂ separation. More importantly, production of this adsorbent can be easily scaled-up to the order of 100 kg using readily available raw materials in this environmentally friendly synthetic route, enabling potential industrial implementation.

Adsorption kinetics and equilibria of two methanol samples with different water content on activated carbon

To investigate the influence of fluid purity on the adsorption properties, adsorption kinetics and adsorption equilibria of two methanol samples with different water content on an activated carbon were studied. The purity of the methanol samples was 98.5% and 99.9%. Measurements were conducted at 298 K and 318 K using a magnetic suspension balance and cover a wide p/p0 range. To determine effective diffusion time constants and mass transfer coefficients, adsorption kinetics were evaluated using an isothermal and a nonisothermal Fickian diffusion model, and the linear driving force model. The pressure dependence of the kinetic parameters was studied and discussed. A small influence of sample purity on the adsorption equilibria was observed, as the purer methanol sample showed slightly higher equilibrium loadings than the less pure sample. However, significantly faster adsorption kinetics were observed for the purer sample at all temperature and pressure conditions. Compared to the less pure sample, the determined effective diffusion time constants and the mass transfer coefficients were up to 98% and 35% higher, respectively.

A diffusion anisotropy descriptor links morphology effects of H-ZSM-5 zeolites to their catalytic cracking performance

Zeolite morphology is crucial in determining their catalytic activity, selectivity and stability, but quantitative descriptors of such a morphology effect are challenging to define. Here we introduce a descriptor that accounts for the morphology effect in the catalytic performances of H-ZSM-5 zeolite for C₄ olefin catalytic cracking. A series of H-ZSM-5 zeolites with similar sheet-like morphology but different c-axis lengths were synthesized. We found that the catalytic activity and stability is improved in samples with longer c-axis. Combining time-resolved in-situ FT-IR spectroscopy with molecular dynamics simulations, we show that the difference in catalytic performance can be attributed to the anisotropy of the intracrystalline diffusive propensity of the olefins in different channels. Our descriptor offers mechanistic insight for the design of highly effective zeolite catalysts for olefin cracking.

Effect of External Surface Diffusion Barriers on Platinum/Beta-Catalyzed Isomerization of n-Pentane

We have developed a generalizable strategy to quantify the effect of surface barriers on zeolite catalysis. Isomerization of n‐pentane, catalyzed by Pt/Beta, is taken as a model reaction system. Firstly, the surface modification by chemical liquid deposition of SiO₂ was carried out to control the surface barriers on zeolite Beta crystals. The deposition of SiO₂ leads to a very slight change in the physical properties of Beta crystals, but an obvious reduction in Brønsted acid sites. Diffusion measurements by the zero‐length column (ZLC) method show that the apparent diffusivity of n‐pentane can be more than doubled after SiO₂ deposition, indicating that the surface barriers have been weakened. Catalytic performance was tested in a fixed‐bed reactor, showing that the apparent catalytic activity improved by 51–131 % after SiO₂ deposition. These results provide direct proof that reducing surface barriers can be an effective route to improve zeolite catalyst performance deteriorated by transport limitations.

Directed transforming of coke to active intermediates in methanol-to-olefins catalyst to boost light olefins selectivity

Methanol-to-olefins (MTO), the most important catalytic process producing ethylene and propylene from non-oil feedstocks (coal, natural gas, biomass, CO₂, etc.), is hindered by rapid catalyst deactivation due to coke deposition. Common practice to recover catalyst activity, i.e. removing coke via air combustion or steam gasification, unavoidably eliminates the active hydrocarbon pool species (HCPs) favoring light olefins formation. Density functional theory calculations and structured illumination microscopy reveal that naphthalenic cations, active HCPs enhancing ethylene production, are highly stable within SAPO-34 zeolites at high temperature. Here, we demonstrate a strategy of directly transforming coke to naphthalenic species in SAPO-34 zeolites via steam cracking. Fluidized bed reactor-regenerator pilot experiments show that an unexpectedly high light olefins selectivity of 85% is achieved in MTO reaction with 88% valuable CO and H₂ and negligible CO₂ as byproducts from regeneration under industrial-alike continuous operations. This strategy significantly boosts the economics and sustainability of MTO process.

A review of common practices in gravimetric and volumetric adsorption kinetic experiments

The availability of commercial gravimetric and volumetric systems for the measurement of adsorption equilibrium has seen also a growth of the use of these instruments to measure adsorption kinetics. A review of publications from the past 20 years has been used to assess common practice in 180 cases. There are worrying trends observed, such as lack of information on the actual conditions used in the experiment and the fact that the analysis of the data is often based on models that do not apply to the experimental systems used. To provide guidance to users of these techniques this contribution is divided into two parts: a discussion of the appropriate models to describe diffusion in porous materials is presented for different gravimetric and volumetric systems, followed by a structured discussion of the main trends in common practice uncovered reviewing a large number of recent publications. We conclude with recommendations for best practice to avoid incorrect interpretation of these experiments.

Control of Surface Barriers in Mass Transfer to Modulate Methanol-to-Olefins Reaction over SAPO-34 Zeolites

Mass transfer of guest molecules has a significant impact on the applications of nanoporous crystalline materials and particularly shape-selective catalysis over zeolites. Control of mass transfer to alter reaction over zeolites, however, remains an open challenge. Recent studies show that, in addition to intracrystalline diffusion, surface barriers represent another transport mechanism that may dominate the overall mass transport rate in zeolites. We demonstrate that the methanol-to-olefins (MTO) reaction can be modulated by regulating surface permeability in SAPO-34 zeolites with improved chemical liquid deposition and acid etching. Our results explicitly show that the reduction of surface barriers can prolong catalyst lifetime and promote light olefins selectivity, which opens a potential avenue for improving reaction performance by controlling the mass transport of guest molecules in zeolite catalysis.

Investigating the Process and Mechanism of Molecular Transport within a Representative Solvent-Filled Metal-Organic Framework

Effective permeation into, and diffusive mass transport within, solvent-filled metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is critical in applications such as MOF-based chemical catalysis of condensed-phase reactions. In this work, we studied the entry from solution of a luminescent probe molecule, 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-4,4-difluoroboradiazaindacene (BODIPY), into the 1D channel-type, zirconium-based MOF NU-1008 and subsequent transport of the probe through the MOF. Measurements were accomplished via in situ confocal fluorescence microscopy of individual crystallites, where the evolution of the fluorescence response from the crystallite was followed as functions of both time and location within the crystallite. From the confocal data, intracrystalline transport of BODIPY is well-described by one-dimensional diffusion along the channel direction. Varying the chemical identity of the solvent revealed an inverse dependence of probe-molecule diffusivity on bulk-solvent viscosity, qualitatively consistent with expectations from the Stokes-Einstein equation for molecular diffusion. At a more quantitative level, however, measured diffusion coefficients are about 100-fold smaller than expected from Stokes-Einstein, pointing to substantial channel-confinement effects. Evaluation of the confocal data also reveals a non-negligible mass transport resistance, i.e., surface barrier, associated with the probe molecule leaving the solution and permeating the exterior surface of the MOF. Permeation by the probe entails displacement of solvent from the MOF channels. The magnitude of the resistance increases with the size of the solvent molecule. This work draws attention to the importance of MOF structure, external-surface barriers, and solvent molecule identity to the overall transport process in MOFs, which should assist in understanding the performance of MOFs in applications such as condensed-phase heterogeneous catalysis.

Imaging spatiotemporal evolution of molecules and active sites in zeolite catalyst during methanol-to-olefins reaction

Direct visualization of spatiotemporal evolution of molecules and active sites during chemical transformation in individual catalyst crystal will accelerate the intuitive understanding of heterogeneous catalysis. So far, widespread imaging techniques can only provide limited information either with large probe molecules or in model catalyst of large size, which are beyond the interests of industrial catalysis. Herein, we demonstrate a feasible deep data approach via synergy of multiscale reaction-diffusion simulation and super-resolution structured illumination microscopy to  illustrate the dynamical evolution of spatiotemporal distributions of gas molecules, carbonaceous species and acid sites in SAPO-34 zeolite crystals of several micrometers that are typically used in industrial methanol-to-olefins process. The profound insights into the inadequate utilization of activated acid sites and rapid deactivation are unveiled. The notable elucidation of molecular reaction-diffusion process  at the scale of single catalyst crystal via this approach opens an interesting method for mechanism study in materials synthesis and catalysis.

Understanding the Role of Internal Diffusion Barriers in Pt/Beta Zeolite Catalyzed Isomerization of n-Heptane

Applications of zeolites in catalysis are plagued by strong diffusion resistance, which results from limitations to molecular transport in micropores, across external crystal surfaces, but also across internal interfaces. The first type of diffusion resistance is well understood, the second is receiving increasing attention, while the diffusion barriers at internal interfaces remain largely unclear. We take Pt/Beta catalyzed isomerization of n-heptane as the model system to explore the role of internal diffusion barriers in zeolite catalysis. The two as-synthesized Pt/Beta catalysts have an identical Pt loading, similar Beta particle size and acidity, but different internal structures. A Pt/Beta crystal with no observable internal interfaces can be 180 % higher in activity and 22 % higher in selectivity than its counterpart with numerous internal interfaces. This can only be attributed to the strong transport barriers across internal interfaces, as supported by directly comparing the apparent diffusivities of the two Beta samples.

Direct probing of heterogeneity for adsorption and diffusion within a SAPO-34 crystal

The heterogeneity with a gradient distribution in adsorption and diffusion of xenon in a SAPO-34 crystal was revealed by ¹²⁹Xe NMR, 2D EXSY NMR and ¹²⁹Xe PFG NMR at the micro-scale. A multi-layer adsorption model in a single crystal was proposed.
