Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to explore the risk factors associated with frozen shoulder patients and further analyze the relationship between gender and diabetes with frozen shoulder. METHOD We have reviewed the data of 1205 frozen shoulder patients in China's Xinjiang region from 2018 to 2023. The collected information included patients' gender, occupation, place of origin, marital status, age, the season of disease onset, duration of illness, etiology, surgical history, hypertension, diabetes, respiratory diseases, knee joint disease, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, rheumatoid arthritis, hyperuricemia, sleep quality, smoking and alcohol consumption, and constipation. We have used multifactor logistic regression analysis to identify the risk factors for a frozen shoulder. RESULTS Single-factor logistic regression analysis showed that the number of females, patients with diabetes, knee joint disease, constipation, and patients with poor sleep quality in the observation group are higher than in the control group (P < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of occupation, place of origin, marital status, age, season of disease onset, duration of illness, etiology, surgical history, hypertension, respiratory diseases, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, rheumatoid arthritis, hyperuricemia, smoking, and alcohol consumption history (P > 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that the final model included four variables: gender, diabetes history, sleep, and constipation. Among them, the OR values of gender and diabetes history were more significant than 1, indicating that they were independent risk factors for frozen shoulder, while the OR values of sleep and constipation were less than 1, suggesting that they were negatively associated with the occurrence of frozen shoulder. CONCLUSION The results of this study suggest that gender and diabetes are independent risk factors for frozen shoulder. Additionally, poor sleep quality and constipation also can be correlated with the occurrence of a frozen shoulder.

Abstract
Living with spinal cord injury (SCI) is a challenge that begins in the acute phase, when the disease, the limitations, and the treatments fill the days at the hospital. This study aims to understand the healthcare experience of the person with SCI in the acute phase, based on the Activities of Living Nursing Model (ALNM). It is a qualitative and phenomenological study based on the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews. Content analysis was performed using the ATLAS.ti software and Bardin's methodology. The article was written following the COREQ guidelines. The categories were defined using the Roper-Logan-Tierney Model for Nursing. The sample included 16 people with incomplete SCI, different etiology, and neurological levels. Eleven of the twelve ALNM emerged from the interviews. The activities of mobilizing, eliminating, maintaining a safe environment, and communicating were emphasized the most. Controlling body temperature was not relevant. Mobility deficits and pain increased dependence. Feelings of motivation, encouragement, and frustration were highlighted. Professional expertise, rehabilitation resources, and support equipment promoted independence. The results in this sample revealed that people with SCI in the acute phase have complex challenges related to dependence awareness and treatments, but they always keep recovery expectations in mind.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Massage is a common therapy of nonpharmacological treatments, particularly in Tuina (Chinese massage) as its most common style, detailed guidance in reporting the intervention is warranted for its evaluation and replication. Based on the CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials), we aimed to develop an Extension for Tuina/Massage, namely "The STandards for Reporting Interventions in Clinical Trials Of Tuina/Massage (STRICTOTM)." METHODS A group of professional clinicians, trialists, methodologists, developers of reporting guidelines, epidemiologists, statisticians, and editors has developed this STRICTOTM checklist through a standard methodology process recommended by the EQUATOR (Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency of Health Research) Network, including prospective registration, literature review, draft of the initial items, three rounds of the Delphi survey, consensus meeting, pilot test, and finalization of the guideline. RESULTS A checklist of seven items (namely Tuina/Massage rationale, details of Tuina/Massage, intervention regimen, other components of the intervention, Tuina/Massage provider background, control or comparator interventions, and precaution measures), and 16 subitems were developed. Explanations and examples (E&E) for each item are also provided. CONCLUSIONS The working group hopes that the STRICTOTM, in conjunction with both the CONSORT statement and extension for nonpharmacologic treatment, can improve the reporting quality and transparency of Tuina/Massage clinical research.

Abstract
Introduction Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) commonly result in pain, stiffness, weakness and numbness. There are limitations in the ability of the standard medical approach to manage many symptoms of SCI. This case study examined the effects of massage therapy as a “complementary” therapy to treat post-operative numbness and stiffness after removal of a cavernous hemangioma intermeshed with a 26-year-old male patient’s spinal cord. Methods The patient received eight, one-hour therapeutic massage sessions over five months. Therapeutic massage techniques were performed by a Board-Certified Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork Therapist and consisted of cranial sacral, Swedish, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and passive stretching. Symptom intensity was recorded prior to each session on a qualitative scale (1–10) and was trended over the course of the study. Results There was a slight decrease over time in left-arm and back numbness, as well as neck and upper body stiffness. The patient viewed therapeutic massage to be a beneficial component to his recovery. Discussion/Conclusion Massage therapy should be considered as an adjunct therapy as part of a rehabilitation plan to address numbness and stiffness post-SCI. Further research is needed to understand the effects of massage therapy on SCI numbness and stiffness.

Abstract
Aging is accompanied by reduced remodeling of skeletal muscle extracellular matrix (ECM), which is exacerbated during recovery following periods of disuse atrophy. Mechanotherapy has been shown to promote ECM remodeling through immunomodulation in adult muscle recovery, but not during the aged recovery from disuse. In order to determine if mechanotherapy promotes ECM remodeling in aged muscle, we performed single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) of all mononucleated cells in adult and aged rat gastrocnemius muscle recovering from disuse, with (REM) and without mechanotherapy (RE). We show that fibroadipogenic progenitor cells (FAPs) in aged RE muscle are highly enriched in chemotaxis genes (Csf1), but absent in ECM remodeling genes compared to adult RE muscle (Col1a1). Receptor-ligand (RL) network analysis of all mononucleated cell populations in aged RE muscle identified chemotaxis-enriched gene expression in numerous stromal cell populations (FAPs, endothelial cells, pericytes), despite reduced enrichment of genes related to phagocytic activity in myeloid cell populations (macrophages, monocytes, antigen presenting cells). Following mechanotherapy, aged REM mononuclear cell gene expression resembled adult RE muscle as evidenced by RL network analyses and KEGG pathway activity scoring. To validate our transcriptional findings, ECM turnover was measured in an independent cohort of animals using in vivo isotope tracing of intramuscular collagen and histological scoring of the ECM, which confirmed mechanotherapy-mediated ECM remodeling in aged RE muscle. Our results highlight age-related cellular mechanisms underpinning the impairment to complete recovery from disuse, and also promote mechanotherapy as an intervention to enhance ECM turnover in aged muscle recovering from disuse.

Abstract
Aim The aim was to evaluate emotional experiences of gentle skin massage, combined with regular rehabilitation in patients shortly after being diagnosed with stroke. Design A randomized study with two groups: standard individualized rehabilitation and tactile massage for 20 min three times per week (max nine times) or individual standardized rehabilitations. Methods This study applied a qualitative approach using semi-structured questions to evaluate experiences of receiving tactile massage among patients with first-time-ever stroke. The interviews lasted between 6-25 min and analysed using manifest content analysis. Data was collected between 2015-2017. This study applies to the COREQ checklist. Results Eight patients >18 years of age participated. The participants experienced emotional worries especially during the night hours affecting their sleep negatively. Receiving tactile massage was reported to relax and to ease worries and anxiety momentarily, during the session and for a longer period. The results also show that physical touch generates feelings of closeness. The findings will be presented in two categories: Human touch and The future.

Abstract
Introduction: Pain is a prominent complication in spinal cord injury (SCI). It can either occur as a direct or as an indirect consequence of SCI and it often heavily influences the quality of life of affected individuals. In SCI, nociceptive and neuropathic pain can equally emerge at the same time above or below the level of injury. Thus, classification and grading of pain is frequently difficult. Effective treatment of SCI-related pain in general and of neuropathic pain in particular is challenging. Current treatment options are sparse and their evidence is considered to be limited. Considering these aspects, a clinical practice guideline was developed as basis for an optimized, comprehensive and standardized pain management in SCI-related pain. Methods: The German-Speaking Medical Society for Spinal Cord Injury (Deutschsprachige Medizinische Gesellschaft für Paraplegiologie – DMGP) developed a clinical practice guideline that received consensus from seven further German-speaking medical societies and one patient organization. The evidence base from clinical trials and meta-analyses was summarized and subjected to a structured consensus-process in accordance with the regulations of the Association of Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF) and the methodological requirements of the “German instrument for methodological guideline appraisal”. Results: This consensus-based guideline (S2k classification according to the AWMF guidance manual and rules) resulted in seven on-topic statements and 17 specific recommendations relevant to the classification, assessment and therapy of pain directly or indirectly caused by SCI. Recommended therapeutic approaches comprise pharmacological (e.g. nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or anticonvulsants) and non-pharmacological (e.g. physical activity or psychotherapeutic techniques) strategies for both nociceptive and neuropathic pain. Discussion: Assessment of SCI-related pain is standardized and respective methods in terms of examination, classification and grading of pain are already in use and validated in German language. In contrast, valid, evidence-based and efficient therapeutic options are limited and ask for further clinical studies, ideally randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Return to work represents an important milestone for workers who were injured during a workplace accident, especially if the injury results in needing a wheelchair for locomotion. OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to design a framework for training novice wheelchair users in regaining autonomy in activities of daily living and in the workplace and for providing medical personnel with objective data on users' health and work-related capabilities. METHODS The framework design was accomplished following the "Usability Engineering Life Cycle" model. According to it, three subsequent steps defined as "Know your User", "Competitive Analysis" and "Participatory Design" have been carried out to devise the described framework. RESULTS The needs of the end-users of the framework were identified during the first phase; the Competitive Analysis phase addressed standard care solutions, Virtual Reality-based wheelchair simulators, the current methodologies for the assessment of the health condition of people with disability and the use of semantic technologies in human resources. The Participatory Design phase led to the definition of an integrated user-centred framework supporting the return to work of wheelchair users. CONCLUSION The results of this work consists in the design of an innovative training process based on virtual reality scenarios and supported by semantic web technologies. In the near future, the design process will proceed in collaboration with the Italian National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work (INAIL). The whole framework will be then implemented to support the current vocational rehabilitation process within INAIL premises.

Abstract
Spinal cord compression is a complex and challenging condition that greatly affects the quality of life. Non-pharmacological techniques have only been studied to a very lesser extent; although they are evidence to be beneficial. We performed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) analysis of the scientific literature in several databases (Medline, Cochrane, Scopus, Cuiden, Pubmed, Lilacs and Embase); using the following keywords: spinal cord compression, spine compression, mobilization, positioning, brace and bracing. Eleven studies met the inclusion criteria and were finally included in the systematic review. 3 of them were related to metastatic spinal cord compression, 5 to spinal cord compression due to other causes and the last 3 of them regarded the health professional´s knowledge in oncology patients. In all cases, it seems possible to manage spinal cord compression by using external mobilization and braces and that this treatment is beneficial to patients. Positioning plays a massive role in the disease and can improve or worsen the condition when used improperly; the supine position is overused and can have a negative impact both physically and psychologically. Non-pharmacological interventions could be useful for pain management, cardiovascular alterations and patients' well-being. One randomized clinical trial demonstrated that massage therapy, using either broad compression massage or light contact touch massage improved pain control. There is an urgent need of randomized clinical trials with these interventions in order to achieve an improved care of these patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the effect of early comprehensive therapy of Traditional Chinese Medicine
(TCM) on motor function of in patients with spinal cord injury. METHODS Fifty-one standard spinal cord injury patients with paraplegia were randomly assigned
to an experimental or control group. The experimental group received TCM comprehensive therapy,
and the control group received modern Western Medicine (WM) treatment for 4 weeks. The motor
score (MS), Barthel Index (BI) and American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) grading were measured
in both groups before and after treatment. RESULTS After treatment, the MS and BI scores of the TCM comprehensive therapy group improved
significantly (P < 0.01), and there was no significant difference in ASIA grading (P > 0.05). The differences
between the experimental and control groups after treatment were not significant (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Early TCM comprehensive therapy is an effective method for improving motor function
in patients with spinal cord injury.

Abstract
PURPOSE Pain is multi-dimensional and may be better addressed through a holistic, biopsychosocial approach. Massage therapy is commonly practiced among patients seeking pain management; however, its efficacy is unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis is the first to rigorously assess the quality of massage therapy research and evidence for its efficacy in treating pain, function-related and health-related quality of life outcomes across all pain populations. METHODS Key databases were searched from inception through February 2014. Eligible randomized controlled trials were assessed for methodological quality using SIGN 50 Checklist. Meta-analysis was applied at the outcome level. A diverse steering committee interpreted the results to develop recommendations. RESULTS Sixty high quality and seven low quality studies were included in the review. Results demonstrate massage therapy effectively treats pain compared to sham [standardized mean difference (SMD) = -.44], no treatment (SMD = -1.14), and active (SMD = -0.26) comparators. Compared to active comparators, massage therapy was also beneficial for treating anxiety (SMD = -0.57) and health-related quality of life (SMD = 0.14). CONCLUSION Based on the evidence, massage therapy, compared to no treatment, should be strongly recommended as a pain management option. Massage therapy is weakly recommended for reducing pain, compared to other sham or active comparators, and improving mood and health-related quality of life, compared to other active comparators. Massage therapy safety, research challenges, how to address identified research gaps, and necessary next steps for implementing massage therapy as a viable pain management option are discussed.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to illuminate the nursing staff's lived experiences and meaning in giving tactile massage (TM) while caring for patients in short-term emergency ward. METHOD Data were collected through individual qualitative interviews with six nurses and eight assistant nurses working with TM in short-term emergency wards in two hospitals in Sweden. The narratives were analyzed using a phenomenological hermeneutical method. FINDINGS Nurses experienced providing TM to patients as a present awareness in connection with compassion for the patient. TM provided the nurses with a tool to ease patient suffering and pain. Three dimensions were found where touch became a tool of doing, was an aware presence as a mindful being, and was embodied in a human-to-human connection with a changed caregiver. CONCLUSION Given the current high-tech health care system with overcrowded units and a shortage of nursing staff, TM could be included as a caring tool to improve the caring in caregiving, allowing nurses to act in aware presence by touch to encourage health and well-being for both the patient and themselves.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic pain is frequent in persons living with spinal cord injury (SCI). Conventionally, the pain is treated pharmacologically, yet long-term pain medication is often refractory and associated with side effects. Non-pharmacological interventions are frequently advocated, although the benefit and harm profiles of these treatments are not well established, in part because of methodological weaknesses of available studies. OBJECTIVES To critically appraise and synthesise available research evidence on the effects of non-pharmacological interventions for the treatment of chronic neuropathic and nociceptive pain in people living with SCI. SEARCH METHODS The search was run on the 1st March 2011. We searched the Cochrane Injuries Group's Specialised Register, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE (OvidSP), Embase (OvidSP), PsycINFO (OvidSP), four other databases and clinical trials registers. In addition, we manually searched the proceedings of three major scientific conferences on SCI. We updated this search in November 2014 but these results have not yet been incorporated. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised controlled trials of any intervention not involving intake of medication or other active substances to treat chronic pain in people with SCI. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently extracted data and assessed risk of bias in the included studies. The primary outcome was any measure of pain intensity or pain relief. Secondary outcomes included adverse events, anxiety, depression and quality of life. When possible, meta-analyses were performed to calculate standardised mean differences for each type of intervention. MAIN RESULTS We identified 16 trials involving a total of 616 participants. Eight different types of interventions were studied. Eight trials investigated the effects of electrical brain stimulation (transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES); five trials) or repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS; three trials). Interventions in the remaining studies included exercise programmes (three trials); acupuncture (two trials); self-hypnosis (one trial); transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) (one trial); and a cognitive behavioural programme (one trial). None of the included trials were considered to have low overall risk of bias. Twelve studies had high overall risk of bias, and in four studies risk of bias was unclear. The overall quality of the included studies was weak. Their validity was impaired by methodological weaknesses such as inappropriate choice of control groups. An additional search in November 2014 identified more recent studies that will be included in an update of this review.For tDCS the pooled mean difference between intervention and control groups in pain scores on an 11-point visual analogue scale (VAS) (0-10) was a reduction of -1.90 units (95% confidence interval (CI) -3.48 to -0.33; P value 0.02) in the short term and of -1.87 (95% CI -3.30 to -0.45; P value 0.01) in the mid term. Exercise programmes led to mean reductions in chronic shoulder pain of -1.9 score points for the Short Form (SF)-36 item for pain experience (95% CI -3.4 to -0.4; P value 0.01) and -2.8 pain VAS units (95% CI -3.77 to -1.83; P value < 0.00001); this represented the largest observed treatment effects in the included studies. Trials using rTMS, CES, acupuncture, self-hypnosis, TENS or a cognitive behavioural programme provided no evidence that these interventions reduce chronic pain. Ten trials examined study endpoints other than pain, including anxiety, depression and quality of life, but available data were too scarce for firm conclusions to be drawn. In four trials no side effects were reported with study interventions. Five trials reported transient mild side effects. Overall, a paucity of evidence was found on any serious or long-lasting side effects of the interventions. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Evidence is insufficient to suggest that non-pharmacological treatments are effective in reducing chronic pain in people living with SCI. The benefits and harms of commonly used non-pharmacological pain treatments should be investigated in randomised controlled trials with adequate sample size and study methodology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Nonspecific musculoskeletal pain can be difficult to manage in acute rehabilitation unit (ARU) patients. We investigated whether vitamin D status is a potential modifiable risk factor for nonspecific musculoskeletal pain in ARU patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study focused on 414 adults from an inpatient ARU in Mission Viejo, California, between July 2011 and June 2012. On ARU admission, all patients had serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels measured and were assessed for nonspecific musculoskeletal pain. We performed multivariable logistic regression to test the association of serum 25(OH)D level with nonspecific musculoskeletal pain while adjusting for clinically relevant covariates. RESULTS Among these 414 patients, mean (SD) 25(OH)D level was 29 (12) ng/mL, and 30% had nonspecific musculoskeletal pain. After adjustment for age, sex, race, body mass index, Functional Independence Measure score, Deyo-Charlson Comorbidity Index, fractures, steroid use, history of osteoporosis/osteomalacia, and patient type (orthopedic, cardiac, neurological, spinal cord injury, or traumatic brain injury), serum 25(OH)D level was inversely associated with nonspecific musculoskeletal pain (odds ratio [OR] per 10 ng/mL, 0.67; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.48-0.82). When 25(OH)D level was dichotomized, patients with levels <20 ng/mL had higher odds of nonspecific musculoskeletal pain (OR, 2.33; 95% CI, 1.23-4.17) compared with patients with levels ≥20 ng/mL. CONCLUSIONS In adult patients, serum 25(OH)D level on admission to ARU was inversely associated with nonspecific musculoskeletal pain. These data support the need for randomized, controlled trials to test the role of vitamin D supplementation to improve nonspecific musculoskeletal pain in ARU patients.
