Abstract
Background The Observational Medical Outcome Partners-Common Data Model (OMOP-CDM) is an international standard for harmonizing electronic medical record (EMR) data. However, since it does not standardize unstructured data, such as medical imaging, using this data in multi-institutional collaborative research becomes challenging. To overcome this limitation, extensions such as the Radiology Common Data Model (R-CDM) have emerged to include and standardize these data types. Objective This work aims to demonstrate that by standardizing optical coherence tomography (OCT) data into an R-CDM format, multi-institutional collaborative studies analyzing changes in retinal thickness in patients with long-standing chronic diseases can be performed efficiently. Methods We standardized OCT images collected from two tertiary hospitals for research purposes using the R-CDM. As a proof of concept, we conducted a comparative analysis of retinal thickness between patients who have chronic diseases and those who have not. Patients diagnosed or treated for retinal and choroidal diseases, which could affect retinal thickness, were excluded from the analysis. Using the existing OMOP-CDM at each institution, we extracted cohorts of patients with chronic diseases and control groups, performing large-scale 1:2 propensity score matching (PSM). Subsequently, we linked the OMOP-CDM and R-CDM to extract the OCT image data of these cohorts and analyzed central macular thickness (CMT) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness using a linear mixed model. Results OCT data of 261,874 images from Ajou University Medical Center (AUMC) and 475,626 images from Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH) were standardized in the R-CDM format. The R-CDM databases established at each institution were linked with the OMOP-CDM database. Following 1:2 PSM, the type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) cohort included 957 patients, and the control cohort had 1603 patients. During the follow-up period, significant reductions in CMT were observed in the T2DM cohorts at AUMC (P=.04) and SNUBH (P=.007), without significant changes in RNFL thickness (AUMC: P=.56; SNUBH: P=.39). Notably, a significant reduction in CMT during the follow-up was observed only at AUMC in the hypertension cohort, compared to the control group (P=.04); no other significant differences in retinal thickness were found in the remaining analyses. Conclusions The significance of our study lies in demonstrating the efficiency of multi-institutional collaborative research that simultaneously uses clinical data and medical imaging data by leveraging the OMOP-CDM for standardizing EMR data and the R-CDM for standardizing medical imaging data.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to determine the 5-year changes in macular thickness and related factors. METHODS Data were from the second (2014) and third (2019) phases of the Shahroud Eye Cohort Study. Examinations included measurement of uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity, non-cycloplegic autorefraction, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, and funduscopy. Participants underwent Cirrus HD-OCT 4000 (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA). IMAGING RESULTS The 5-year changes (95% confidence interval) of central and overall macular thicknesses were - 3.48 ± 8.16 μ (-3.92, -3.03) and - 0.79 ± 4.06 μ (-1.03, -0.54), respectively. The median and IQR of 5-year changes in the central subfield thickness were -3 and 10, although they were 0 and 5 in the overall macular thickness, respectively. Multiple regression model showed the central macular thickness (CMT) decreased with a U-shape pattern with increasing age. The 5-year changes in CMT were significantly lower in females compared to males β = -1.55; (-2.78, -0.32) and in smokers compared to non-smokers β = -1.92; (-3.55, -0.28). Moreover, higher body mass index β = -0.12; (-0.22, -0.02) and CMT at baseline β = -0.08; (-0.10, -0.06) were significantly associated with lower CMT changes. The average 5-year changes in overall macular thickness showed a non-linear decrease with age and was significantly higher in females β = 0.93; (0.4, 1.43). These changes were directly related to the anterior chamber depth β = 0.87; (0.10, 1.64) in the baseline. CONCLUSIONS The macular thickness decreased slightly after 5 years; however, this change is not clinically significant. Demographic factors such as age and sex and refractive errors were significantly related to macular thickness changes.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study evaluated the structural features of the retinal and choroidal regions and their correlations with ocular biometric and vascular parameters in Chinese children using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS A total of 159 children, 6-13 years of age, were included in this prospective study. The sample consisted of 55 emmetropes (spherical equivalent ≤ +0.75 and > -0.50 D), 53 low-moderate myopes (≤ -0.50 to > -6.00 D) and 51 high myopes without pathological changes (≤ -6.00 D). Optical coherence biometry was used to measure axial length (AL) and anterior segment parameters. Swept-source optical coherence tomography/OCTA was used to assess the macular structures and vascular characteristics in a 6 × 6 mm region centred on the macula. RESULTS In a comprehensive analysis adjusting for age, sex, AL, macular blood perfusion, intraocular pressure and anterior segment parameters, retinal thickness (RT) showed a significant positive association with deep retinal vascular density and superficial retinal vascular density in the foveal area, but not with AL. Moreover, RT exhibited a significant negative association with AL in the parafoveal and perifoveal regions. Further, a significant positive correlation was observed between choroidal thickness and both choroidal vascular volume and choriocapillaris perfusion area, along with a negative correlation with AL across the entire macular region. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that the thickness of retina and choroid in Chinese children was not only associated with AL but also showed dynamic properties such as the blood perfusion of the retina and choroid, particularly in the foveal area.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the thickness of the macular retina and central choroid in an indigenous population from Ghana, Africa and to compare them with those measured among individuals with European or African ancestry. Design Cross-sectional study, systematic review, and meta-analyses. Participants Forty-two healthy Ghanaians, 37 healthy individuals with European ancestry, and an additional 1427 healthy subjects with African ancestry from previously published studies. Methods Macular retinal thickness in the fovea, parafovea, and perifovea and central choroidal thickness were extracted from OCT volume scans. Associations with ethnicity, age, and sex were assessed using mixed-effect regression models. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to determine the sensitivity of significant associations to additional potential confounders. Pooled estimates of retinal thickness among other groups with African ancestry were generated through systematic review and meta-analyses. Main Outcome Measures Macular retinal thickness and central choroidal thickness and their association with ethnicity, age, and sex. Results When adjusted for age and sex, the macular retina and central choroid of Ghanaians are significantly thinner as compared with subjects with European ancestry (P < 0.001). A reduction in retinal and choroidal thickness is observed with age, although this effect is independent of ethnicity. Meta-analyses indicate that retinal thickness among Ghanaians differs markedly from that of African Americans and other previously reported indigenous African populations. Conclusions The thickness of the retina among Ghanaians differs not only from those measured among individuals with European ancestry, but also from those obtained from African Americans. Normative retinal and choroidal parameters determined among individuals with African or European ancestry may not be sufficient to describe indigenous African populations. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Thinning of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (p-RNFL), as measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT), was recently introduced as a promising marker for cerebral neuronal loss in people with epilepsy (PwE). However, its clinical implication remains to be elucidated. We thus aimed to (1) systematically characterize the extent of the retinal neuroaxonal loss in a broad spectrum of unselected PwE and (2) to evaluate the main clinical determinants. METHODS In this prospective study, a spectral-domain OCT evaluation was performed on 98 well-characterized PwE and 85 healthy controls (HCs) (18-55 years of age). All inner retinal layers and the total macula volume were assessed. Group comparisons and linear regression analyses with stepwise backward selection were performed to identify relevant clinical and demographic modulators of the retinal neuroaxonal integrity. RESULTS PwE (age: 33.7 ± 10.6 years; 58.2% female) revealed a significant neuroaxonal loss across all assessed retinal layers (global pRNFL, P = 0.001, Δ = 4.24 μm; macular RNFL, P < 0.001, Δ = 0.05 mm3 ; ganglion cell inner plexiform layer, P < 0.001, Δ = 0.11 mm3 ; inner nuclear layer, INL, P = 0.03, Δ = 0.02 mm3 ) as well as significantly reduced total macula volumes (TMV, P < 0.001, Δ = 0.18 mm3 ) compared to HCs (age: 31.2 ± 9.0 years; 57.6% female). The extent of retinal neuroaxonal loss was associated with the occurrence and frequency of tonic-clonic seizures and the number of antiseizure medications, and was most pronounced in male patients. SIGNIFICANCE PwE presented an extensive retinal neuroaxonal loss, affecting not only the peripapillary but also macular structures. The noninvasive and economic measurement via OCT bears the potential to establish as a practical tool to inform patient management, as the extent of the retinal neuroaxonal loss reflects aspects of disease severity and sex-specific vulnerability. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY The retina is an extension of the brain and closely connected to it. Thus, cerebral alterations like atrophy reflect also on the retinal level. This is advantageous, as the retina is easily accessible and measureable with help of the optical coherence tomography. Here we report that adults with epilepsy have a significantly thinner retina than healthy persons. Especially people with many big seizures and a lot of medications have a thinner retina. We propose that measurement of the retina can be useful as a marker of disease severity and to inform patient management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to assess the status of the optic nerve and retina by optical coherence tomography (OCT) in a group of patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) on the basis of dynamic changes in intracranial pressure. METHODS This observational and cross-sectional study included patients affected by idiopathic intracranial hypertension with papilledema (IIHWP) and patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension without papilledema (IIHWOP). All participants underwent an OCT examination of the macula and optic nerve head. Parameters related to intracranial pressure, including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) opening pressure (oCSFp), CSF mean pressure (mCSFp), and pulse wave amplitude (PWA), were included in the analysis. RESULTS Out of the 22 subjects enlisted for the study, a total of 16 patients suggestive of IIH were finally enrolled. Papilledema was detected in nine subjects (56.2%) and seven patients were affected by IIHWOP (43.7%). The OCT examination showed a higher mean RNFL thickness in IIHWP patients in comparison to IIHWOP in both eyes (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01, respectively). Intracranial pressure (ICP) measurements showed that IIHWP had higher values of oCSFp, mCSFp, and PWA compared to IIHWOP (p = 0.0001, p = 0.0001, and p = 0.0001, respectively). In addition, ICP parameters significantly correlated with RNFL. CONCLUSIONS Clinical parameters suggestive of idiopathic intracranial hypertension are associated with retina and optic nerve OCT parameters. OCT is a useful tool to detect these alterations in a non-invasive fashion.

Abstract
Purpose To compare the accuracy of machine learning (ML) algorithms to classify the sex of the participant from retinal thickness datasets in different retinal layers. Methods This cross-sectional study involved 26 male and 38 female subjects. Data were acquired using HRA + OCT Spectralis, and the thickness and volume of 10 retinal layers were quantified. A total of 10 features were extracted from each retinal layer. The accuracy of various algorithms, including k-nearest-neighbor, support vector classifier, logistic regression, linear discriminant analysis, random forest, decision tree, and Gaussian Naïve Bayes, was quantified. A two-way ANOVA was conducted to assess the ML accuracy, considering both the classifier type and the retinal layer as factors. Results A comparison of the accuracies achieved by various algorithms in classifying participant sex revealed superior results in datasets related to total retinal thickness and the retinal nerve fiber layer. In these instances, no significant differences in algorithm performance were observed (p > 0.05). Conversely, in other layers, a decrease in classification accuracy was noted as the layer moved outward in the retina. Here, the random forest (RF) algorithm demonstrated superior performance compared to the others (p < 0.05). Conclusion The current research highlights the distinctive potential of various retinal layers in sex classification. Different layers and ML algorithms yield distinct accuracies. The RF algorithm's consistent superiority suggests its effectiveness in identifying sex-related features from a range of retinal layers.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to develop deep learning models using macular optical coherence tomography (OCT) images to estimate axial lengths (ALs) in eyes without maculopathy. Methods A total of 2,664 macular OCT images from 444 patients' eyes without maculopathy, who visited Beijing Hospital between March 2019 and October 2021, were included. The dataset was divided into training, validation, and testing sets with a ratio of 6:2:2. Three pre-trained models (ResNet 18, ResNet 50, and ViT) were developed for binary classification (AL ≥ 26 mm) and regression task. Ten-fold cross-validation was performed, and Grad-CAM analysis was employed to visualize AL-related macular features. Additionally, retinal thickness measurements were used to predict AL by linear and logistic regression models. Results ResNet 50 achieved an accuracy of 0.872 (95% Confidence Interval [CI], 0.840-0.899), with high sensitivity of 0.804 (95% CI, 0.728-0.867) and specificity of 0.895 (95% CI, 0.861-0.923). The mean absolute error for AL prediction was 0.83 mm (95% CI, 0.72-0.95 mm). The best AUC, and accuracy of AL estimation using macular OCT images (0.929, 87.2%) was superior to using retinal thickness measurements alone (0.747, 77.8%). AL-related macular features were on the fovea and adjacent regions. Conclusion OCT images can be effectively utilized for estimating AL with good performance via deep learning. The AL-related macular features exhibit a localized pattern in the macula, rather than continuous alterations throughout the entire region. These findings can lay the foundation for future research in the pathogenesis of AL-related maculopathy.

Abstract
PURPOSE In supervised Machine Learning algorithms, labels and reports are important in model development. To provide a normality assessment, the OCT has an in-built normative database that provides a color base scale from the measurement database comparison. This article aims to evaluate and compare normative databases of different OCT machines, analyzing patient demographic, contrast inclusion and exclusion criteria, diversity index, and statistical approach to assess their fairness and generalizability. METHODS Data were retrieved from Cirrus, Avanti, Spectralis, and Triton's FDA-approval and equipment manual. The following variables were compared: number of eyes and patients, inclusion and exclusion criteria, statistical approach, sex, race and ethnicity, age, participant country, and diversity index. RESULTS Avanti OCT has the largest normative database (640 eyes). In every database, the inclusion and exclusion criteria were similar, including adult patients and excluding pathological eyes. Spectralis has the largest White (79.7%) proportionately representation, Cirrus has the largest Asian (24%), and Triton has the largest Black (22%) patient representation. In all databases, the statistical analysis applied was Regression models. The sex diversity index is similar in all datasets, and comparable to the ten most populous contries. Avanti dataset has the highest diversity index in terms of race, followed by Cirrus, Triton, and Spectralis. CONCLUSION In all analyzed databases, the data framework is static, with limited upgrade options and lacking normative databases for new modules. As a result, caution in OCT normality interpretation is warranted. To address these limitations, there is a need for more diverse, representative, and open-access datasets that take into account patient demographics, especially considering the development of supervised Machine Learning algorithms in healthcare.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify baseline ocular and systemic factors associated with central subfield thickness (CST) fluctuations in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) using data from Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Protocols T and V. DESIGN Post hoc analysis of clinical trial databases. SUBJECTS Patients in Protocols T and V. METHODS The standard deviation (SD) of all recorded CSTs for each patient during each Protocol's study period was calculated. The CST SD (corresponding to CST fluctuations) for each patient was analyzed against baseline ocular and systemic factors using linear regression analyses. Each Protocol was analyzed separately. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Factors associated with CST fluctuations. RESULTS A total of 1197 eyes of 1197 subjects were included. In Protocol T (559 eyes, mean CST SD was 56.4 ± 35.1 microns), using multivariate linear regression analysis, baseline urine albumin/creatine ratio (for every 1000 mg/g, CST point estimate 3.50, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.58 to 6.43, P = 0.0190), and baseline CST (for every 10 microns, 0.87, 95% CI 0.58 to 1.16, P < 0.0001) were positively associated with CST fluctuations. Baseline visual acuity (for every 10 ETDRS letters, -9.52, 95% CI -11.89 to -7.15, P < 0.0001) was negatively associated with CST fluctuations. In Protocol V (638 eyes, mean CST SD 36.6 ± 28.4 microns), gender (female, 2.18, 95% CI 0.30 to 4.06, P = 0.0227), baseline CST (for every 10 microns, 2.51, 95% CI 2.21 to 2.82, P < 0.0001), systolic blood pressure (for every 1 mm of mercury, 0.11, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.21, P = 0.0261), and observation with deferred anti-VEGF injections (5.04, 95% CI 2.51 to 7.58, P < 0.0001) were positively associated with CST fluctuations. Type 2 diabetes (-7.37, 95% CI -13.64 to -1.11, P = 0.0209) and prompt anti-VEGF injections (-6.51, 95% CI -9.07 to -3.96, P < 0.0001) were negatively associated with CST fluctuations. CONCLUSIONS Worse visual acuity at baseline, baseline renal disease, hypertension, female gender, type 1 diabetes, and delayed anti-VEGF treatment may be associated with increased CST fluctuations in patients with DME. Addressing these parameters may limit CST fluctuations and help identify patients requiring more frequent monitoring or treatment.

Abstract
Purpose To report normative values of macular thickness and volume by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in the eyes of healthy Jordanian children aged 6–16 years and assess the correlation of macular parameters with age, sex, and refractive error. Patients and Methods This observational study included 144 eyes of 144 healthy children. All children underwent comprehensive ocular examination and cycloplegic refraction. Average macular thickness, macular volume, central subfield thickness (CST), and macular thickness for all the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) quadrants were obtained using Primus SD-OCT (Carl Zeiss Meditec). Results The study group consisted of 68 boys and 76 girls with a mean age (SD) of 10.8 (3.0) years. The mean (SD) spherical equivalent refraction (SER) was 0.56 (1.73) diopters (range: −4.75 to 4.75). The mean of macular average thickness was 277.2±12.5 μm, and the mean of the central subfield thickness was 246.7±16.8 μm. In multivariate analysis, all macular parameters except the central subfield thickness (CST) correlated positively with the SER. Boys had significantly higher CST than girls (p=0.008). None of the macular parameters were correlated with age. Conclusion Normative data of macular thickness for healthy Jordanian children were established for sex and age groups using SD-OCT.

Abstract
Aim This study aims to compare the ganglion cell complex changes in diabetic macular edema (DME) and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) macular edema using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods This was a hospital-based cross-sectional study conducted for six months. All patients having DME and CRVO macular edema presenting to the Ophthalmology Department at Acharya Vinobha Bhave Rural Hospital were included in the study. A detailed and comprehensive ophthalmic examination was performed, and OCT was done for each patient. Results The incidence of both DME and CRVO macular edema were both found to be maximum in the age group of 61-69 years. DME is more common in males (62.86%) than females (37.14%); the same was observed in CRVO group: 54.29% were males and 45.71% were females. Macular edema showed a mean value of 370.11 in DME and 428.71 in CRVO. Thus, the CRVO group showed more macular edema than the DME group. The ganglion cell complex thickness showed a mean value of 58.47 in DME and 66.77 in the CRVO group, implying that the thickness reduced significantly in the DME group. Conclusion OCT provides quantitative measurement of the ganglion cell complex thickness, which helps monitor the course of macular edema secondary to CRVO and diabetes Mellitus and thereby provides an assessment of the prognosis of the disease as these two diseases in particular are major causes of blindness worldwide, and timely care and management can help in altering its course.

Abstract
AIM To describe the morphological characteristics of foveal avascular zone (FAZ) in normal Chinese adults with or without myopia by swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) and analyze the possible associated factors. METHODS Normal Chinese adults with or without myopia aged between 18 and 60y were recruited into the study. One eye in each individual was randomly selected for scanning using SS-OCTA. FAZ parameters, central retinal thickness (CRT) and central choroidal thickness (CCT) were then analyzed. Correlations between systemic and ocular variables and FAZ parameters were subsequently evaluated. The subgroup analysis based on refractive error was also carried out. RESULTS In total, 127 eyes out of 127 normal subjects were finally included in the study (mean age 29.5±8.22y, 61 males and 66 females). The pattern of FAZ was variable: round configuration in 28 eyes (22%), quadrilateral configuration in 23 eyes (18%), pentagonal configuration in 20 eyes (16%), oval configuration in 15 eyes (12%), triangular configuration in 6 eyes (5%) and irregular configuration in 35 eyes (28%). The mean area of FAZ was 0.37±0.12 mm2. Females had a larger FAZ (0.41±0.11 mm2 vs 0.32±0.11 mm2) compared with that of males (P<0.01). All myopic individuals showed smaller FAZ area and perimeter compared with that of normal individuals (P<0.01). There was no obvious correlation between age and FAZ. In the univariate regression analysis, both axial length (AL) and refractive error were significantly related to FAZ parameters. However, only CRT showed negative correlation with FAZ in the multivariate regression analysis. CONCLUSION The pattern of FAZ configuration in normal Chinese adults with or without myopia is highly variable. Establishing quantitative parameters of FAZ would not only provide details of macular pathophysiology but could possibly contribute as a biomarker in disease staging.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to establish spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) assessment data in well-established canine models of inherited retinal dystrophies: PDE6B-rod-cone dysplasia 1 (RCD1: early onset retinitis pigmentosa), PRCD-progressive rod-cone degeneration (PRCD: late onset retinitis pigmentosa), CNGB3-achromatopsia, and RPE65-Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA). High resolution SD-OCT images of the retina were acquired from both eyes in 5 planes: temporal; superotemporal; superior; nasal; and inferior in adult dogs with: RCD1 (n = 4 dogs, median age: 1.5 yrs); PRCD (n = 2, 4.3 yrs); LCA (n = 3, 5.2 yrs); achromatopsia (n = 3, 4.2 yrs); and wild types (wt, n = 6, 5.5 yrs). Total, inner and outer retinal thicknesses and ellipsoid zone were analyzed. In selected animals, histomorphometric evaluations were performed. In dogs with RCD1, PRCD, and LCA, the thickness of the outer retina was, compared to wt, significantly decreased (p ≤ 0.02) in all OCT imaging planes, and in superotemporal and inferior imaging planes in dogs with achromatopsia. No significant thinning was observed in inner retina thickness in any disease model except in the inferior imaging plane in dogs with RCD1. Dogs with RCD1, PRCD, and LCA had significantly more areas with disrupted ellipsoid zone in the presumed area centralis than wt (p ≤ 0.001). OCT findings provide baseline information for research of retinal dystrophies using these canine models.

Abstract
Objective To establish a normative database for the vascular density (VD) in macular, disc, and peripapillary regions in healthy myopic children and to evaluate associated ocular features with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Methods This was an observational, prospective and cross-sectional study. 776 Chinese healthy myopic children (375 boys and 401 girls) were enrolled, mean (±SD) age 9.84 ± 1.98 (range 6–16) years. En-face angiogram OCTA was performed on 6 mm × 6 mm retinal and 4.5 mm × 4.5 mm disc regions. VD measurements in the macular retina were segmented into the four regions: superficial capillary plexus (SCP), intermediate capillary plexus (ICP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), and choriocapillaris (CC). Correlations between macular, disc, and peripapillary VD and possible influencing factors [age, gender, axial length (AL), spherical equivalent refraction (SER), right/left eye, and signal strength index (SSI)] were assessed by Pearson’s correlation and multivariate regression analysis. Results For macular scans, the corrected VD in the ICP region was (48.25 ± 4.24)% for the whole macular retina. The macular ICP VD in most sections was lower than the SCP, DCP, and CC (all P < 0.001). The corrected VD in CC was (72.96 ± 4.42)% for the whole macular retina. The macular CC VD in every section was all higher than the SCP, ICP, and DCP (all P < 0.001). The size of foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and foveal VD 300 (FD-300) was 0.28 mm2± 0.10 mm2 and (58.43 ± 4.17)% respectively. For disc scans, the corrected VD was (58.04 ± 2.73)% for the whole disc area. Both AL and SER were strongly correlated with ICP, DCP, and CC VD in all regions (all P < 0.01). Larger SSI was correlated with a lower VD in the SCP and ICP, and a higher VD in DCP and CC (all P < 0.01). Conclusion Vascular density values provide large scale normative data on macular, disc, and peripapillary vascular parameters in a large sample of healthy myopic children with OCTA measured in the four different retinal plexuses and regions. The VD in different regions had various influencing factors; mainly a close correlation with AL and SSI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is one of the major public health problems globally, especially among women. Obesity is associated with glaucoma, cataract, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Although it is clear that the anatomy and physiologic functions of the choroid may be affected by obesity, data investigating the effect of obesity on the choroid is limited and/or unavailable for the Saudi population. OBJECTIVE To assess Choroidal Thickness (CT) changes in a sample of healthy Saudi Arabian women with different Body Mass Index (BMI) using Spectral-domain Ocular Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT). METHODS A total of 140 healthy women aged 18-29 years (mean age ± standard deviation SD, 24.5 ± 1.7 years) with different BMI, axial length (AL) ≤ 24 ± 1.0 mm, and spherical equivalent refraction (SER) of ≤ ±2.0 dioptres were enrolled for the study. The participants were age and refractionmatched, and grouped into underweight (BMI ≤ 18.0 kg/m2) (n = 30), normal (control group) (18.5-24.9 kg/m2) (n = 43), overweight (25.0-29.9 kg/m2) (n=37), and obese study groups (≥ 30.0 kg/m2) (n = 30). SD-OCT imaging was performed on one eye of each participant. Comparisons among groups for all locations and the associations between CT and other variables were examined. RESULTS The mean CT at the subfoveal region (285 ± 31 μm, range: 203 μm to 399 μm) was significantly greater, and it was the lowest in the nasal region (248 ± 26 μm, range 154 to 304) compared with other locations, across all the groups (p < 0.05). Compared with the control, the subfoveal choroid was thinner in the obese group (mean difference: 22.6 μm, 95% Confidence Interval; CI: 8.6 μm to 36.6 μm; p = 0.02) and across all locations (p < 0.05) but thicker at the temporal location in the underweight group (12.4 μm, 95% CI: -23.7 μm to -1.04 μm; p = 0.01). No significant association of subfoveal CT with any of the measured parameters, including age (p-values ranged from 0.10 to 0.90), was found. CONCLUSION BMI may have an influence on the CT of healthy individuals and could be a cofounder in research studies on CT. It is, therefore, recommended that BMI should be evaluated in the clinical diagnosis and management of conditions associated with choroid in healthy individuals.

Abstract
Background So far, few data are available on the relationship between allergic conjunctivitis (AC) and ocular fundus. Whether retinal parameters change in patients with AC remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the influence of AC on retinal thickness and vessel density among 7-years-old school-age children. Methods This large population-based study is part of the Nanjing Eye Study (NES). Comprehensive examinations including anthropometric parameters, refraction, ocular biometric parameters, intraocular pressure and retinal parameters were conducted on each child. Retinal thickness and vessel density were assessed using the optical coherence tomography angiography. Information on AC was obtained from a comprehensive questionnaire. Results A total of 739 children (mean age ± SD: 7.40 ± 0.29 years) had complete eye examination and questionnaire data we needed. Ninety-four children (12.7%) had AC, among which, 5 children had the history of corticosteroid use and were excluded from the final analysis. Spherical equivalent, axial length, body mass index and birth weight were correlated with retinal parameters. After adjusting for sex, age, spherical equivalent, axial length, body mass index, birth weight and premature history, children with AC had thinner retinal nerve fiber layer thickness for average (117.39 versus 120.97 μm, p = 0.007), temporal (80.73 versus 84.34 μm, p = 0.001), nasal (98.82 versus 102.18 μm, p = 0.049) and inferior (152.68 versus 157.06 μm, p = 0.034) quadrants than the control group. Conclusions Children with AC tended to have thinner retinal nerve fiber layer thickness. More attention is needed to fundus condition of children with AC. Abstract
Purpose Changes in retinal thickness are common in various ocular diseases. Transverse magnification due to differing ocular biometrics, in particular axial length, affects measurement of retinal thickness in different regions. This study evaluated the effect of axial length and refractive error on measured macular thickness in two community-based cohorts of healthy young adults. Methods A total of 2160 eyes of 1247 community-based participants (18–30 years; 23.4% myopes, mean axial length = 23.6mm) were included in this analysis. Macular thickness measurements were obtained using a spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (which assumes an axial length of 24.385mm). Using a custom program, retinal thickness data were extracted at the 9 Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) regions with and without correction for transverse magnificent effects, with the corrected measurements adjusting according to the participant’s axial length. Linear mixed models were used to analyse the effect of correction and its interaction with axial length or refractive group on retinal thickness. Results The raw measures (uncorrected for axial length) underestimated the true retinal thickness at the central macula, while overestimating at most non-central macular regions. There was an axial length by correction interaction effect in all but the nasal regions (all p<0.05). For each 1mm increase in axial length, the central macular thickness is overestimated by 2.7–2.9μm while thicknesses at other regions were underestimated by 0.2–4.1μm. Based on the raw thickness measurements, myopes have thinner retinas than non-myopes at most non-central macular. However, this difference was no longer significant when the corrected data was used. Conclusion In a community-based sample, the raw measurements underestimate the retinal thickness at the central macula and overestimate the retinal thickness at non-central regions of the ETDRS grid. The effect of axial length and refractive error on retinal thickness is reduced after correcting for transverse magnification effects resulting from axial length differences.

Abstract
PURPOSE To develop deep learning models for identification of sex and age from macular optical coherence tomography (OCT) and to analyze the features for differentiation of sex and age. DESIGN Algorithm development using database of macular OCT. METHODS We reviewed 6147 sets of macular OCT images from the healthy eyes of 3134 individuals from a single eye center in Taiwan. Deep learning-based algorithms were used to develop models for the identification of sex and age, and 10-fold cross-validation was applied. Gradient-weighted class activation mapping was used for feature analysis. RESULTS The accuracy for sex prediction using deep learning from macular OCT was 85.6% ± 2.1% compared with accuracy of 61.9% using macular thickness and 61.4% ± 4.0% using deep learning from infrared fundus photography (P < .001 for both). The mean absolute error for age prediction using deep learning from macular OCT was 5.78 ± 0.29 years. A thorough analysis of the prediction accuracy and the gradient-weighted class activation mapping showed that the cross-sectional foveal contour lead to a better sex distinction than macular thickness or fundus photography, and the age-related characteristics of macula were on the whole layers of retina rather than the choroid. CONCLUSIONS Sex and age could be identified from macular OCT using deep learning with good accuracy. The main sexual difference of macula lies in the foveal contour, and the whole layers of retina differ with aging. These novel findings provide useful information for further investigation in the pathogenesis of sex- and age-related macular structural diseases.

Abstract
PRCIS Different clinical factors are associated with the location of the first structural progression in glaucoma. PURPOSE The aim was to investigate the underlying clinical parameters affecting the location of the initial structural progression of glaucoma in patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). METHODS This retrospective study included 228 eyes of 228 patients with NTG. In total, 130 eyes of 130 patients demonstrated structural progression (as determined by event-based guided progression analysis using Cirrus HD-optical coherence tomography) in the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (ppRNFL) or macular ganglion cell inner plexiform layer (mGCIPL). Depending on where the progression occurred first, it was defined as either ppRNFL first progression or mGCIPL first progression. Clinical parameters associated with each first progression were identified using logistic regression. RESULTS In total, 50 eyes showed ppRNFL first progression and 64 eyes showed mGCIPL first progression. ppRNFL first progression was significantly associated with female sex [odds ratio (OR)=5.705, P=0.015], lack of systemic hypertension (OR=0.199, P=0.014), disc hemorrhage (OR=4.188, P=0.029), higher mean intraocular pressure (OR=1.300, P=0.03), and lower pattern SD (OR=0.784, P=0.028). In contrast, male sex (OR=0.450, P=0.043), lower central corneal thickness (OR=0.987, P=0.032), higher intraocular pressure fluctuation (OR=1.753, P=0.047), lower systolic blood pressure fluctuation (OR=0.839, P=0.002), and higher diastolic blood pressure fluctuation (OR=1.208, P=0.015) were significantly associated with mGCIPL first progression. CONCLUSIONS Different clinical factors were associated with the initial site of structural glaucoma progression in patients with NTG depending on its peripapillary or macular location, and these findings suggest possible differences in underlying mechanisms of glaucoma damage.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate differences in the retinal microvasculature and structure and choroidal structure among men and women with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) compared with age-matched cognitively normal male and female controls. Design Case-control study of participants ≥ 50 years of age. Participants A total of 202 eyes of 139 subjects (101 cases and 101 controls). Methods All participants and controls underwent OCT and OCT angiography (OCTA), and parameters of subjects with AD were compared with those of cognitively normal controls. Main Outcome Measures The foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, vessel density (VD), and perfusion density (PD) in the superficial capillary plexus within the 3- and 6-mm circle and ring using Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) grid overlay on OCTA; central subfield thickness (CST), retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness, and choroidal vascularity index (CVI) on OCT. Results No significant sex differences in VD or PD were found in the AD or control cohorts; however, there were greater differences in VD and PD among AD female participants than AD male participants compared with their respective controls. The CST and FAZ area were not different between male and female AD participants. Among controls, men had a thicker CST (P < 0.001) and smaller FAZ area (P = 0.003) compared with women. The RNFL thickness, GCIPL thickness, and CVI were similar among male and female AD participants and controls. Conclusions There may be a loss of the physiologic sex-related differences in retinal structure and microvasculature in those with AD compared with controls. Further studies are needed to elucidate the pathophysiological basis for these findings.

Abstract
Purpose To measure the anatomical characteristics of the macula in fellow eyes of patients with unilateral idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM) and to compare them with normal controls. Methods A total of 83 fellow eyes with unilateral idiopathic ERM were gathered as the study group, and their age- and sex-matched subjects with no vitreomacular diseases were recruited as the control group. Macular structure parameters including foveal base width (FBW), central foveolar thickness (CFT), central subfield thickness (CST), area of foveal avascular zone (FAZ), and retinal artery trajectory (RAT) were measured using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography and were compared between two groups. Results For the study group, the FBW (463.8 ± 79.6 µm) and area of FAZ (0.39 ± 0.12 mm2) were significantly larger than those in the control group (334.3 ± 76.5 µm, 0.31 ± 0.13 mm2). Their CST was thinner and their RAT was wider than those of the control group (P < 0.05 for all). In the normal population, females had a wider FBW, a thinner CFT, and a wider RAT than males (P < 0.05 for all). Conclusions Fellow eyes of the unilateral ERM had a larger FBW, a larger FAZ, a thinner CST, and a wider RAT than the normal population. This implicates that some centrifugal tractional force may exist on their macula, which eventually may result in the formation of idiopathic ERM. Females had a wider FBW, a thinner CFT, and a wider RAT than males, which may explain the higher prevalence of idiopathic ERM in females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Traditionally fundus photographs and optical coherence tomography (OCT) are obtained separately during evaluation of retinal pathology. We describe a novel integrated imaging system (Monaco, Optos) that records both OCT as well as fundus photography concurrently. The present study aims to measure retinal thickness and compare it to OCT obtained with traditional spectral domain OCT in subjects without known retinal disease to establish normative data for clinical use. METHODS In this cross sectional study, fundus photographs and OCT was obtained concurrently in 34 eyes in healthy patients without any known retinal disease with integrated imaging system. OCT with spectralis was also obtained at the same visit for comparison. All subjects underwent a complete ophthalmologic exam to ensure the absence of ocular pathology. OCT was performed by the same operator. Central subfield thickness (CST), central point thickness (CPT), and retinal thickness in nine central subfields were measured with both 1 instruments. Fundus photographs were obtained. Students t-test was used to determine statistical significance. RESULTS The mean CST as measured with MIIS-SD OCT and Spectralis OCT was 300.53±22.81 µm and 265.18±17.33 µm (P<0.001) respectively. The Pearson's correlation coefficient, r value was 0.5285, P<0.0013. The mean CPT as measured with MIIS-SD OCT and Spectralis OCT was 268.55±20.70 and 230.67±17.75 µm (P<0.001) respectively. The r-value was 0.5697, P<0.0004. The mean difference between retinal thicknesses was 44.88 µm (range, 21-91 µm) in the eight ETDRS subfields, with r value 0.53, P<0.05, ranging from 0.51 to 0.60. Concurrently obtained ultrawide angle fundus photographs revealed (200°) clear media, normal disc, normal vasculature and normal periphery in all patients with excellent resolution. CONCLUSIONS Retinal thickness measurements strongly correlated with those obtained by Spectralis. An increased measurement in thickness of 35.35 µm was noted in the central fovea. In addition, wide-angle fundus photography was successfully obtained in all subjects. Integrated system provides quality fundus photographs as well as OCT, obviates the need for two separate instruments and likely improves the clinic flow.

Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate changes in central macular thickness (CMT) and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) after phacovitrectomy over a 2-year period in idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM) patients.Methods: The records of 52 idiopathic ERM patients (52 eyes) who underwent phacovitrectomy, without recurrence of the condition over a 2-year follow-up period, were reviewed retrospectively. Changes in CMT and SFCT, as measured by optical coherence tomography, were analyzed and compared with those of a normal control group over a 2-year period.Results: The mean preoperative CMT and SFCT were 425.67 ± 84.67 and 257.56 ± 90.13 μm, respectively. Postoperative CMT was reduced significantly to 372.17 ± 45.26 μm at 1 year and 363.15 ± 47.35 μm at 2 years (p < 0.001). SFCT at 1 and 2 years postoperatively was significantly reduced to 238.85 ± 84.85 and 230.31 ± 87.95 μm, respectively (p < 0.001). In the control group, there was no significant change in CMT; however, the SFCT decreased by 11.09 ± 22.36 μm during the 2-year follow-up (p = 0.007). In contrast, in the patient group, CMT and SFCT decreased by 62.52 ± 71.45 and 27.25 ± 41.97 μm, respectively, showing a significant difference from the control group (p < 0.001 and p = 0.043, respectively). Both before surgery and at 1 year postoperatively, the thinner the CMT, the better the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (p = 0.010 and p = 0.018, respectively). A better postoperative BCVA at 2 years was associated with a thinner CMT and better BCVA before surgery (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively).Conclusions: Following a phacovitrectomy procedure, ERM patients showed significant reductions in both the CMT and SFCT at the 2-year follow-up.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Do gender, age, body mass and height influence eye biometrical properties in young adults? METHODS A total of 155 eyes (92 female, 63 male) of healthy subjects between the ages of 18 and 39 years were included in the study. The subjects' gender and age were recorded, and their body mass, height and biometrical properties of the eyes were measured. RESULTS The male subjects had significantly thicker and flatter corneas and lower minimal rim-to-disk ratios than the female subjects did. In both genders, age showed strong, negative correlations with anterior chamber depth and pupil diameter and a positive correlation with lens thickness. We also found significant, negative correlations between body height and mass with keratometry measurements, negative correlations between body height and optic disk rim area and rim volume, and positive correlations between body mass and axial length in both genders. CONCLUSIONS Biometric eye parameters differ among people. In addition to age and gender, which are usually taken into consideration when interpreting ocular biometry findings, we strongly suggest that body height and mass should be also routinely considered when interpreting eye biometry data, as these factors have an impact on ocular biometry.

Abstract
To investigate the relationship between vitreomacular traction (VMT) width, foveal floor width (FFW) and other anatomical characteristics between eyes of patients with VMT. Retrospective observational study of unilateral and bilateral VMT cases from two specialist ophthalmic centres in the United Kingdom (UK) between 2016 and 2018. For unilateral VMT cases: VMT width in the affected eye and FFW in the non-affected fellow eye were measured. In bilateral VMT cases: VMT width in both eyes was measured. In all cases, the presence of any associated inner or outer retinal, and vitreoretinal interface (VRI) changes, including epiretinal membrane, was also documented. 88 patients fulfilled the study criteria: 57 having unilateral and 31 bilateral VMT. For unilateral VMT cases, log (VMT) width was significantly correlated with FFW (r = 0.347, p = 0.008). Using stepwise linear regression, FFW (p = 0.004) and VRI changes (p = 0.03) were both significantly associated with VMT width with a R2 of 0.21. In bilateral VMT cases, there was strong positive correlation between log (VMT) width (r = 0.88, p < 0.001), and the presence of any VRI (r = 0.90, p < 0.001) or outer retinal changes (r = 0.50, p < 0.001) between the two eyes. These findings suggest that individual variations in foveal morphology as measured by the FFW, along with the presence of vitreoretinal interface changes, are associated with the extent of VMT width. VMT width, VRI and outer retinal changes were also highly correlated between eyes in bilateral VMT, suggesting that individual patient factors, which may be genetic or acquired, determine their presence and extent.

Abstract
Purpose Quantitative fundus autofluorescence (QAF) enables comparisons of autofluorescence intensities among participants. While clinical QAF reports mostly focused on the healthy and diseased adult retina, only very limited data of QAF in the maturing eye are available. Here, we report QAF in a large cohort of healthy children. Methods In this prospective monocentric cross-sectional study, 70 healthy Caucasian children (5–18 years) were multimodal imaged, including QAF and spectral domain optical coherence tomography. QAF and retinal thicknesses were measured at predefined locations (along horizontal meridian; Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study [ETDRS] grid) and correlated using custom written Fiji plugins. Standard retinae for different age groups were generated. Results Fifty-three participants were included. QAF was low in childhood but increased steadily (P < 0.001), also at the fovea (P < 0.001), with no gender differences (P = 0.61). The QAF distribution was similar to adults showing highest values superior-temporally. At individual points, retinal thickness remained stable, while using the ETDRS pattern, the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) thickness increased significantly with aging. Standard QAF retinae of age groups also showed an increase with aging. Conclusions QAF can be reliably performed in young children. Function–structure correlation showed a thickening of the RPE and an increasing QAF with aging, probably related to the histologic low number of RPE autofluorescent granules at a younger age but further deposition of these granules during maturation. Standard retinae help to distinguish abnormal QAF in the diseased retina of age-matched patients. Translational Relevance Our data bridge the gap between preclinical QAF and clinical data application and structural OCT correlation in children.

Abstract
Purpose: To establish normative data for macular thickness in Chinese aged 30 to 80 years using the swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) device.Methods: The study included 290 normal eyes, 430 NDR eyes and 150 DR eyes of community residents aged 30 to 80 years in Guangzhou, China. Mean macular thicknesses in Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) subfields, central point thicknesses (CPT), and macular volume was measured by SS-OCT (Triton DRI OCT, Topcon, Tokyo, Japan) and Spectral-Domain OCT (SD-OCT; Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany). We assessed agreement between SS-OCT and SD-OCT measurements by intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and Bland-Altman plots. We established a conversion equation relating central subfield (CSF), CPT and macular volume between the two OCT devices.Results: Macular thickness measurements in SS-OCT were significantly thinner than in SD-OCT. The mean CSF thickness in normal eyes measured by SS-OCT and SD-OCT were 227.8 ± 19.4 μm and 260.0 ± 19.7 μm (p < .0001). CSF thickness was a significantly difference between genders (SS-OCT: male 237.2 ± 18.8 μm vs female 222.0 ± 17.5 μm, p < .0001). In all three groups, the agreement between SS-OCT and SD-OCT was excellent (all ICC > 0.9). The conversion equations for CSF, CPT and macular volume from SS-OCT to SD-OCT were derived, with over 95% of the predicted values fell within 10% of the actual measurements in DR and NDR eyes.Conclusion: We propose SS-OCT CSF thicknesses of 275 μm for males and 260 μm for females as the minimum criteria for macular edema in Chinese aged 30 to 80 years based on 2 SDs above the mean CSF. SS-OCT measurements were significantly thinner than SD-OCT. We derived equations from converting SS-OCT measurements to SD-OCT equivalents.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to systematically review the reported data of normal optical coherence tomography (OCT) results in the paediatric population. A systematic literature search was performed using the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases, using the keywords "optical coherence tomography"; "normative data" or "healthy eyes"; "children" or "paediatric population". Studies with at least 50 participants were included, irrespective of the OCT equipment employed. We excluded the OCT angiography studies or the studies investigating the choroidal thickness. Seventy-four studies were included in the final analysis and information on study design, number of participants, demographic characteristics, type of OCT equipment, OCT parameters and results was collected. Due to the high variability of OCT instruments and parameters used, a meta-analysis was not feasible. We report the normative values for the peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer thickness and the macular retinal thickness for each ETDRS quadrant, as provided by the studies included in the present analysis. We also report the influence of ethnicity, age, gender, eye laterality, ISNT rule, spherical equivalent, and axial length on OCT results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine normal macular thickness values in a healthy Mexican population and its variation by age and gender using Huvitz spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (HOCT-1F). METHODS This cross-sectional study included 211 consecutive eyes from clinically normal subjects (66 men, 145 women) between October 2018 and December 2018, with best-corrected visual acuities better than 20/30. One eye was selected for the macular scan using the Huvitz OCT (Huvitz OCT-1F, HOCT-1F, Huvitz Co., Ltd., Republic of Korea) with an automated segmentation algorithm. Three vertical and horizontal scans, centered on the fovea with an area of 9 mm, and a color 45° fundus photograph were obtained using Huvitz OCT-1F. Macular measurements were presented as means with standard deviations values for each of the nine regions defined by the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS). RESULTS The mean age was 34.3±11.9 years. Using the ETDRS map, the mean central subfield thickness (CST) was 227.4±18.9 µm. Male gender was associated with greater CST (P<0.001) compared to females. There was no association between mean macular CST (r2=0.011; P=0.11) and age. Macular thickness was thicker in the inner ring than in the outer ring, and there were no significant differences in mean CST among age groups (P=0.70). CONCLUSION Normal macular thickness values using the Huvitz OCT in a Mexican healthy population aged from 18-70 years were thinner in the foveal macular region than values reported in other populations. Female patients had a thinner CST, and age was not correlated with macular thickness.

Abstract
With the advent of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, imaging of the posterior segment of the eye can be carried out rapidly at multiple anatomical locations, including the optic nerve head, circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer, and macula. There is now ample evidence to support the role of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography imaging of the macula for detection of early glaucoma. Macular spectral-domain optical coherence tomography measurements demonstrate high reproducibility, and evidence on its utility for detection of glaucoma progression is accumulating. We present a comprehensive review of macular spectral-domain optical coherence tomography imaging emerging as an essential diagnostic tool in glaucoma.

Abstract
PURPOSE Determining which factors influence idiopathic macular hole (MH) size is important because it is a major prognostic indicator of treatment success. Foveal pit morphologic features are highly symmetrical within individuals and may influence idiopathic MH size. Using a series of patients with unilateral idiopathic MHs, we examined the foveal floor size of the fellow eye to evaluate its relationship with idiopathic MH size and postoperative outcomes. DESIGN Retrospective observational study. PARTICIPANTS Two hundred forty-one participants with a unilateral idiopathic MH treated with surgery and a fellow eye with no ocular pathologic features. METHODS Both eyes underwent spectral-domain (SD) OCT imaging at the time of surgery. Minimum linear diameter (MLD) and base diameter (BD) defined idiopathic MH size. Foveal floor width (FFW) and minimal foveal thickness defined foveal pit morphologic features of the fellow eye. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Baseline characteristics, SD OCT measurements, and preoperative variables were compared to determine their relationship with idiopathic MH size and postoperative visual acuity (VA) in logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution units. RESULTS Foveal floor width was correlated with MLD (r = 0.36; P ≤ 0.001) and BD (r = 0.30; P ≤ 0.001), but not postoperative VA. Minimum linear diameter correlated with preoperative VA (r = 0.49; P ≤ 0.0001) and postoperative VA (r = 0.54; P ≤ 0.0001). A 2-stage regression model was developed to predict postoperative VA (r2 = 0.28): preoperative VA (β = 0.36; P = 0.002) explained 13% of variability and MLD (β = 0.29; P = 0.002), and idiopathic MH duration (β = 0.23; P = 0.004) explained a further 16%. CONCLUSIONS Foveal floor width of the fellow eye in patients with a unilateral idiopathic MH was correlated significantly with idiopathic MH size and may explain some of the variability in idiopathic MH size observed between individuals. However, FFW could not predict postoperative vision.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate genetic influence on macular ganglion cell inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness. METHODS Macular GCIPL thickness was measured with optical coherence tomography in nine macular subfields defined by the E TDRS. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) of GCIPL thickness by different types of family relationships were estimated to assess intrafamilial resemblance. Then, heritability of GCIPL thickness was estimated. RESULTS Three hundred and sixty-one Korean adults from 89 families with normal healthy eyes were included. GCIPL thickness was highest in inner subfields and lowest in fovea. Monozygotic twin pairs showed significantly higher ICCs of GCIPL thickness in all subfields compared to those in parent-offspring pairs and sibling pairs. GCIPL thickness was highly heritable in the centre (0.71) and outer subfields but moderate to highly heritable in inner subfields. Heritability of GCIPL thickness in outer subfields was 0.69, 0.67, 0.72 and 0.68 for superior, inferior, temporal and nasal fields, respectively. Heritability of GCIPL thickness in inner subfields was 0.55, 0.56, 0.75 and 050 for superior, inferior, temporal and nasal subfields, respectively. CONCLUSION Macular GCIPL thickness is significantly influenced by genetic factors. It varies according to subfields with moderate to high heritability in all subfields.

Abstract
PURPOSE/AIM OF THE STUDY Detailed analysis of retinal structure such as the retinal nerve fiber layer can be performed by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). There are no published studies concerning a relationship between retinal nerve fiber layer and human sphenoid sinus volumes. We investigated this relationship. MATERIAL AND METHODS Spectral-domain OCT. The peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and sphenoid sinus volume estimation of both sides of sex-matched patients were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS The mean RNFL thicknesses at the left side (91.8 μm) were significantly smaller than the right side (94.5 μm) (P = 0.040). However, the mean left sinus volume (44.5 cm) is larger than the right side, (34.5 mm) (P < 0.005). Left and right differences of both parameters are statistically significant (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION There is a negative correlation between mean RNFL thicknesses and mean sinus volumes. To our knowledge, this article is the first report demonstrating the asymmetry relationship between RNFL and sphenoid sinus volumes.

Abstract
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is associated with clinically significant cerebral microembolism and cognitive status changes. There are no data on the impact of TAVR on retinal layers. We assessed the influence of TAVR on the retinal nerve fiber layer, ganglion cell complex (GCC), and macular thickness (MT) measured by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Elderly patients (n = 50) with severe aortic stenosis undergoing TAVR were included in this study (mean age: 78.5 ± 6.9 years). Retinal nerve fiber layer, GCC, and MT were measured with SD-OCT by an ophthalmologist before and on the first day and in the first month after TAVR. The average MT was significantly increased on the first day after TAVR compared with the basal value (P = .04). Ganglion cell complex thickness was significantly thinner on the first day after TAVR than the basal value in the inner inferior quadrant and outer temporal quadrant of the left eye (P = .03 and .04, respectively). Postoperative changes observed on the first day compared with the preoperative period returned to basal values in the first month. In conclusion, TAVR did not cause permanent changes in retinal layers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE To evaluate the impact of sex differences on the presenting features, treatment patterns, and clinical outcomes in patients with central retinal vein occlusions (CRVO). PATIENTS AND METHODS This retrospective, longitudinal cohort study included 476 patients diagnosed with CRVO over a 7-year period. Charts were reviewed and clinical data were abstracted. RESULTS The average age at CRVO onset was lower in males (63.8 years vs. 66.1 years; P = .048). More males (104/224, 54%) had an ischemic CRVO compared to females (113/252, 45%) at 12 months (P = .05). Males with CRVO had a greater central subfield thickness at the baseline (546.7 ± 306.8 μm vs. 438.4 ± 252.9 μm; P = .003) and final visits (343 ± 179.5 μm vs. 304.6 ± 176.2 μm; P = .005). Foveal avascular zone enlargement was more likely in males (39/102, 38% vs. 29/116, 25%; P = .04). CONCLUSIONS Sex differences exist in presenting features of patients with CRVO. Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the association between optical coherence tomography (OCT)-measured retinal layer thickness parameters with clinical and patient-centred visual outcomes in healthy eyes. Participants aged 40 and above were recruited from the Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Diseases Study, a multi-ethnic population-based study. Average macular, ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL), and outer retinal thickness parameters were obtained using the Cirrus High Definition-OCT. Measurements of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and 11-item visual functioning questionnaire (VF-11) were performed. Associations between macular thickness parameters, with BCVA and Rasch-transformed VF-11 scores (in logits) were assessed using multivariable linear regression models with generalized estimating equations, adjusted for relevant confounders. 4,540 subjects (7,744 eyes) with a mean age of 58.8 ± 8.6 years were included. The mean BCVA (LogMAR) was 0.10 ± 0.11 and mean VF-11 score was 5.20 ± 1.29. In multivariable regression analysis, thicker macula (per 20 µm; β = −0.009) and GCIPL (per 20 µm; β = −0.031) were associated with better BCVA (all p ≤ 0.001), while thicker macula (per 20 µm; β = 0.04) and GCIPL (per 20 µm, β = 0.05) were significantly associated with higher VF-11 scores (all p < 0.05). In conclusion, among healthy Asian eyes, thicker macula and GCIPL were associated with better vision and self-reported visual functioning. These findings provide further understanding on the potential influence of macular thickness on visual function.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the effects of refraction on retinal thickness measurements at different locations and layers in healthy eyes of Saudi participants. Methods Thirty-six randomly selected adults aged 27.0 ± 5.7 years who attended a Riyadh hospital from 2016 to 2017 were categorized into three groups: non-myopic (spherical equivalent refraction [SER], +1.00 to –0.50 diopters [D]), low myopic (SER, –0.75 to –3.00D), and moderate to high myopic (SER ≤ –3.25D). Full, inner, and outer retinal thicknesses were measured at nine locations by spectral-domain stratus optical coherence tomography (Optovue Inc., Fremont, CA, USA) and were compared according to refractive group and sex. Results The mean SERs for the non-myopia, low myopia, and moderate to high myopia groups were 0.2 ± 0.6, –1.5 ± 0.5, and –7.5 ± 1.9 D, respectively. Refractive error, but not sex, had significant effects on the retinal layer thickness measurements at different locations (P < 0.05). The parafoveal and outer retinal layers were significantly thicker than the perifoveal and inner retina layers in all groups (P < 0.05). The full foveal thickness was higher and the full parafoveal and perifoveal regions were thinner in moderate to high myopic eyes than in the non-myopic eyes (P < 0.05), but were similar to those in the low myopic eyes (P > 0.05). The foveal thicknesses measured in the inner and outer layers of the retina were higher but the thicknesses measured at the inner and outer layers of the parafoveal and perifoveal regions were lower in moderate to high myopic eyes. Conclusion There were regional differences in the retinal layer thicknesses of healthy Saudi
eyes, which was dependent on the central refractions. This is important when interpreting
retinal nerve fiber layer thicknesses in myopia and disease management in Saudi participants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tissue derived biomarkers may offer utility as indicators of accumulated damage. Reduced thickness of retinal neuronal tissue and the vascular choroid have previously been associated with vascular damage and diabetes. We evaluated associations between retinal thickness, retinal microvascular and choroidal measures, and renal function in a population with a high burden of comorbidity. METHODS Participants were recruited from nuclear cardiology or renal medicine clinics. Retinal and choroidal thickness were measured from spectral-domain optical coherence tomograms. Retinal microvascular parameters were assessed from digital fundus photographs using a semi-automated software package. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Chronic kidney disease (CKD) categorised as: CKD stages 1-2, eGFR ≥60 ml/min/1.73m2; CKD stage 3, eGFR 30-59 ml/min/1.73m2, and CKD stages 4-5, eGFR ≤29 ml/min/1.73m2. RESULTS Participants (n = 241) had a mean age of 65 years and a mean eGFR of 66.9 ml/min/1.73m2. Thirty-nine % of the cohort had diabetes and 27% were using diuretics. Thinning of the inner retina and changes to its microvascular blood supply were associated with lower eGFR and CKD stages 4 and 5, while no associations were found between the outer retinal layers or their choroidal blood supply and CKD of any stage. These associations remained following adjustment for age, mean arterial blood pressure, diabetes status, low-density lipoprotein, body mass index, and sex. CONCLUSIONS Inner retinal thinning and retinal microvascular variation is associated with advanced CKD (stages 4 & 5) independent of important confounding factors, but not with earlier stage CKD (stage 3) and, therefore, its utility as a biomarker for early CKD is not supported in this study.

Abstract
Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a multifactorial optic neuropathy characterized by progressive retinal ganglion cell death and visual field loss. Some speculate that sex plays a role in the risk of developing POAG and that the physiological differences between men and women may be attributed to the variable effects of sex hormones on intraocular pressure, ocular blood flow, and/or neuroprotection. Estrogen, in the form of premenopausal status, pregnancy, and postmenopausal hormone therapy is associated with an increase in ocular blood flow, decrease in intraocular pressure and neuroprotective properties. The vasodilation caused by estrogen and its effects on aqueous humor outflow may contribute. In contrast, although testosterone may have known effects in the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems, there is no consensus as to its effects in ocular health or POAG. With a better understanding of sex hormones in POAG, sex hormone-derived preventative and therapeutic considerations in disease management may provide for improved sex-specific patient care.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe a distinct vitreomacular interface disorder (VMID) termed Foveal Abnormality associated with epiretinal Tissue of medium reflectivity and Increased blue-light fundus Autofluorescence Signal (FATIAS). METHODS A case series including forty-seven eyes of 47 patients. The included eyes must present an irregular foveal contour on optical coherence tomography (OCT) and a pathologically increased autofluorescent signal at the fovea on blue-light fundus autofluorescence (B-FAF). Main outcome measures were morphologic characteristics of the lesions, logarithm of minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and central foveal thickness (CFT). RESULTS The following two types of FATIAS were identified: (1) the step type characterized by an asymmetric contour of the foveal pit and by a tissue of medium reflectivity on the foveal surface and (2) the rail type characterized by a shallow foveal pit and a rail of tissue of medium reflectivity on the foveal surface. The outer retinal bands were continuous in all cases. Both types presented with an area of increased B-FAF signal, usually bilobed in the step type and round and centered on the foveal pit in the rail type. LogMAR BCVA was 0.09 ± 0.1 and 0.1 ± 0.1 (P = 0.91), and CFT was 197.8 ± 9.7 and 202.2 ± 13.2 (P = 0.19) in the step and in the rail group, respectively. CONCLUSIONS We describe a distinct VMID named FATIAS. Two types of FATIAS may be appreciated with SD-OCT and B-FAF analyses, the step and the rail type. Both are characterized by abnormal foveal contour and autofluorescence signal.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the relationship between macular thickness and axial length (AL) in myopic eyes. Methods We included 441 myopic eyes in this study and measured macular thickness at the fovea and in other macular regions, using optical coherence tomography. We got thickness difference indices (TDIs) which by definition are the values of thickness difference obtained by subtracting the foveal thickness from that of each macula sector to evaluate macular contour. We then analyzed the relationships between AL and foveal thickness and AL and the TDIs of each macular sector. Results In polynomial regression analyses, foveal thickness slope was relatively flat up to an AL of 25.5 mm and began to rise from 25.5-26.0 mm. The TDIs were also relatively flat up to AL of 25.5mm and started to show steepened negative slopes from around AL of 25.5 mm. When grouping myopia participants as high myopia or non-high myopia based on AL of 25.5mm, all macular indices of the high myopia group showed significant correlation with AL (all p values <0.01). But all indices of non-high myopia group had no significant correlation with AL. Conclusions Average macular thickness profiles showed that appreciable changes started at an AL of 25.5mm.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to assess the effects of age, gender, axial length and retinal thickness on the vascular density in a normal population using the Optovue optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A). Methods A total of 209 eyes of 209 healthy subjects were scanned using the OCT-A on an outpatient basis. Patients were 20–75 years of age. The built-in software covered a 3×3 mm circle centered at the macula. The circle was divided into five sectors: a 1 mm central foveal circle and an upper, lower, nasal and temporal sector each spanning 1–3 mm away from the central circle. The vascular density (VD) at the superficial capillary plexus was measured, which spanned from the inner limiting membrane to the inner plexiform layer. Results The fovea was the least dense area (32.5%±5.9%), and the temporal area was the densest (52.4%± 4.4%). Similarly, the fovea was the thinnest part of the retina (237.8±20.7 µm); however, the nasal sector was the thickest (308.5±15.1 µm). We found a correlation of the retinal thickness (r=0.541, P<0.001) with VD only at the fovea. Similarly, males had a greater density at the fovea (P=0.002). All regions significantly and negatively correlated with age even after adjusting for axial length. The age sees a decline in the density after the fifth decade where the variability also seems to increase. Conclusion This study provides normative data for the Pakistani population. Additionally, it demonstrates that VD is affected by the retinal thickness at the fovea and the density begins to decline after the fifth decade.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze the associations of retinal and choroidal thickness on enhanced-depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) with clinical, ophthalmic and genetic factors in the normal elderly population (aged 65 years or older). METHODS In this prospective, population-based cohort study, people aged 65 years or older were enrolled in the baseline study of the Korean Longitudinal Study on Health and Aging (KLoSHA) Eye Study. All participants underwent spectral domain-OCT scan using the EDI technique. A topographic map of the retina was obtained and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) was measured manually. Blood samples from all subjects were genotyped for major age-related macular degeneration (AMD)-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) the major AMD-associated SNPs; CFH Y402H rs1061170, CFH I62V rs800292, ARMS2 A69S rs10490924. A statistical analysis was conducted to compare the retinal thickness, choroidal thickness, and AMD risk genotypes. RESULTS Among the three hundred eighty people enrolled, the mean age was 76.6 years (range 65-99 years). Factors that showed correlation with either tomographic retinal parameters, retinal nerve fiber layer, or SFCT, were age and gender. Significant age-related decrease in thickness was observed in the RNFL, mean central thickness (MCT) and SFCT. Gender differences existed in central foveolar thickness (CFT) and MCT, where it was thicker in men. While chorioretinal parameters were not related with other genotypes, CFH rs1061170 risk genotype was significantly associated with thin SFCT. The group containing the AMD- risk allele (CT) had a 14.7% reduction in the SFCT compared to the non-risk TT group. CONCLUSIONS In addition to the well-known association with AMD, CFH rs1061170 is a significant genetic risk factor associated with choroidal thinning in normal eyes of the elderly population. Such findings may provide further insight into the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration as well as normal aging. In addition, our study provides the first normative data on retinal and choroidal thickness in population-based aged groups with a mean age over seventy-five.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare and complex autoimmune disorder characterized by microvascular damage and progressive fibrosis which affects the skin and multiple other organs. Much of the published data concerning SSc and the eye consists of single case reports or small case studies. This systematic review aims to provide an overview of the current level of evidence for SSc-related ocular changes. MATERIALS AND METHODS A systematic literature review was conducted using 3 electronic databases, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A combination of following keywords was used: "Systemic Sclerosis" and ophthalmology-related search terms, including the keywords "Eye", "Ocular" and "Ophthalmic". All articles were screened by 2 independent reviewers at title, abstract and full text level. We solely included case-control studies that investigated specific ocular findings in SSc patients compared to healthy controls. RESULTS Nine of 270 articles were retained. Dry eye symptoms are associated with SSc, whereas objective signs (Schirmer I testing) show conflicting results. There is insufficient evidence of SSc-related changes to the central corneal thickness. In terms of posterior segment involvement, choroidal vasculature appears to be affected to greater extent than the retinal microcirculation. However, the limited number of patients included in the studies renders it hazardous to draw overall conclusions. CONCLUSIONS There is a paucity of well-designed case-control studies investigating possible ocular involvement in SSc. Our systematic review demonstrates limited proven associations between SSc and ocular abnormalities, mainly in terms of dry eye symptoms and choroidal thickness. Future standardized prospective studies are needed to clarify the impact of the disease on the eye.

Abstract
Purpose Ellipsoid zone (EZ) and outer retinal integrity are strongly linked to visual prognosis, but quantitative normative data is lacking. This study evaluates the EZ, outer retina, and inner retina in eyes without macular disease across a wide age spectrum. Methods An IRB-approved study was performed for eyes without macular pathology undergoing Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) scans on the Cirrus HD-OCT system (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Oberkochen, Germany). Scans were analyzed using a previously described automated EZ mapping tool with line-by-line manual verification. Segmentation included internal limiting membrane (ILM), outer nuclear layer/Henle fiber layer complex (ONL/HFL), EZ, and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). The output included metrics for the inner retina (ILM-OPL/HFL), outer retina (ONL/HFL-RPE), EZ-RPE area and volume, and en face EZ mapping. EZ-RPE attenuation on en face mapping was defined as EZ-RPE thickness < 20 um, and total attenuation was 0 um. Imaging parameters were assessed for the group and compared to age, sex, visual acuity and spherical equivalent. Results 167 eyes from 167 subjects were included. Mean age was 49.7 years (range 10–84 years). The mean foveal retinal thickness was 200.58 ± 19.22 um. Mean inner retinal thickness was 21.47 ± 13.60 um. Mean outer retinal thickness was 179.11 ± 18.52 um. Mean EZ-RPE thickness was 50.58 ± 6.01um. The mean EZ-RPE volume was 1.20 ± 0.10 mm3. Mean EZ attenuation percentage per macular map area was 0.87% ± 1.13% and mean percentage total attenuation was 0.12% ± 0.14%. Total and inner retinal thickness metrics decreased with age. Mean outer retinal thickness increased with age. EZ-RPE parameters were unchanged with age. However, EZ attenuation was negatively correlated with age. Conclusion This study provides important information for inner and outer retinal parameters. Future research on quantitative EZ integrity can utilize this data for comparison.
