Spatiotemporal distribution of groundwater drought using GRACE-based satellite estimates: a case study of Lower Gangetic Basin, India

Droughts frequently occurring in India have significant societal, economic, and environmental effects. The lack of direct measurements of groundwater in location and time hinders quantitative methods to analyse the intricate nature of groundwater drought. This work used the datasets derived from the Gravity and Climate Experiment (GRACE and GRACE-FO) and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) to extensively analyse Groundwater Storage changes in the Lower Gangetic Basin (LGB) using unique hydrological parameters between the years 2003 and 2022. The analysis highlights that the GRACE-derived terrestrial water storage anomaly in the LGB decreased significantly (-12.12 mm/yr), and the amount of Groundwater Storage Anomaly (GWSA) decreased similarly (-10.80 mm/yr), while in the GRACE-FO period, a positive trend has been noticed in TWSA (33.96 mm/yr) and GWSA (64.8 mm/yr) respectively. A drought indicator called the GRACE-derived groundwater drought index (GGDI) has been computed for the entire LGB region. A traditional drought study viz. Standardised Precipitation Index (SPI) was performed over LGB to justify the results of the GGDI. The results from GGDI study effectively matched the periods of significant drought occurrences with the 12-month SPI time series. From the GGDI, this study examined groundwater drought's spatial distribution, temporal evolution, and trend (Modified Mann Kendall trend) aspects. According to research findings, the LGB experienced three major drought periods between 2009-2010, 2019 (moderate), and 2015-2016 (severe). The study offers reliable quantitative data on the evolution of GRACE-derived groundwater drought, which may add a new perspective to additional drought research in the densely populated study area, which depends majorly on agriculture, livestock and less skilled water-intensive industries such as leather and textile industries in a sub-tropical climate. This paradigm incorporates changes in groundwater resources caused by human activities and climate change, paving the way for measuring progress towards sustainable use and water security.

Using the Local Drought Data and GRACE/GRACE-FO Data to Characterize the Drought Events in Mainland China from 2002 to 2020

Accurate quantification of drought characteristics helps to achieve an objective and comprehensive analysis of drought events and to achieve early warning of drought and disaster loss assessment. In our study, a drought characterization approach based on drought severity index derived from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and its Follow-On (GRACE-FO) data was used to quantify drought characteristics. In order to improve drought detection capability, we used the local drought data as calibration criteria to improve the accuracy of the drought characterization approach to determine the onset of drought. Additionally, the local precipitation data was used to test drought severity determined by the calibrated drought characterization approach. Results show that the drought event probability of detection (POD) of this approach in the four study regions increased by 61.29%, 25%, 94.29%, and 66.86%, respectively, after calibration. We used the calibrated approach to detect the drought events in Mainland China (MC) during 2016 and 2019. The results show that CAR of the four study regions is 100.00%, 92.31%, 100.00%, and 100.00%. Additionally, the precipitation anomaly index (PAI) data was used to evaluate the severity of drought from 2002 to 2020 determined by the calibrated approach. The results indicate that both have a strong similar spatial distribution. Our analysis demonstrates that the proposed approach can serve a useful tool for drought monitoring and characterization.

Analysis of the Influencing Factors of Drought Events Based on GRACE Data under Different Climatic Conditions: A Case Study in Mainland China

The occurrence of droughts has become more frequent, and their intensity has increased in mainland China. With the aim of better understanding the influence of climate background on drought events in this region, we analyzed the role of the drought-related factors and extreme climate in the formation of droughts by investigating the relationship between the drought severity index (denoted as GRACE-DSI) based on the terrestrial water storage changes (TWSCs) derived from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) time-variable gravity fields and drought-related factors/extreme climate. The results show that GRACE-DSI was consistent with the self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index in mainland China, especially for the subtropical monsoon climate, with a correlation of 0.72. Precipitation (PPT) and evapotranspiration (ET) are the main factors causing drought events. However, they play different roles under different climate settings. The regions under temperate monsoon climate and subtropical monsoon climate were more impacted by PPT, while ET played a leading role in the regions under temperate continental climate and plateau mountain climate. Moreover, El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) events mainly caused abnormalities in PPT and ET by affecting the strength of monsoons (East Asian and Indian monsoon) and regional highs (Subtropical High, Siberian High, Central Asian High, etc.). As a result, the various affected regions were prone to droughts during ENSO or NAO events, which disturbed the normal operation of atmospheric circulation in different ways. The results of this study are valuable in the efforts to understand the formation mechanism of drought events in mainland China.

Monthly and Seasonal Drought Characterization Using GRACE-Based Groundwater Drought Index and Its Link to Teleconnections across South Indian River Basins

Traditional drought monitoring is based on observed data from both meteorological and hydrological stations. Due to the scarcity of station observation data, it is difficult to obtain accurate drought distribution characteristics, and also tedious to replicate the large-scale information of drought. Thus, Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) data are utilized in monitoring and characterizing regional droughts where ground station data is limited. In this study, we analyzed and assessed the drought characteristics utilizing the GRACE Groundwater Drought Index (GGDI) over four major river basins in India during the period of 2003–2016. The spatial distribution, temporal evolution of drought, and trend characteristics were analyzed using GGDI. Then, the relationship between GGDI and climate factors were evaluated by the method of wavelet coherence. The results indicate the following points: GRACE’s quantitative results were consistent and robust for drought assessment; out of the four basins, severe drought was noticed in the Cauvery river basin between 2012 and 2015, with severity of −27 and duration of 42 months; other than Godavari river basin, the remaining three basins displayed significant negative trends at monthly and seasonal scales; the wavelet coherence method revealed that climate factors had a substantial effect on GGDI, and the impact of Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) on drought was significantly high, followed by Sea Surface Temperature (SST) Index (namely, NINO3.4) and Multivariate El Niño–Southern Oscillation Index (MEI) in all the basins. This study provides reliable and robust quantitative result of GRACE water storage variations that shares new insights for further drought investigation.

Spatiotemporal Characteristics of Drought and Driving Factors Based on the GRACE-Derived Total Storage Deficit Index: A Case Study in Southwest China

Drought monitoring is useful to minimize the impact of drought on human production and the natural environment. Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites can directly capture terrestrial water storage anomalies (TWSA) in the large basin, which represents a new source of hydrological information. In this study, the GRACE-based total storage deficit index (TSDI) is employed to investigate the temporal evolution and spatial distribution of drought in Southwest China from 2003 to 2016. The comparison results of TSDI with the standardized precipitation index (SPI), the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), and the self-calibrating Palmer drought severity index (SC-PDSI) show that TSDI has significant consistency with them, which verifies the reliability of TSDI. The spatial distribution of TSDI was more consistent with the governmental drought reports than SC-PDSI in the most severe drought event from September 2009 to April 2010. Finally, the links between drought and climate indicators are investigated using the partial least square regression (PLSR) model. The results show that insufficient precipitation has the most significant impact on drought in Southwest China, followed by excessive evaporation. Although Southwest China is selected as a case study in this paper, the method can be applied in other regions as well.

Using GRACE satellite observations for separating meteorological variability from anthropogenic impacts on water availability

Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) observations provide information on Total Water Storage Anomaly (TWSA) which is a key variable for drought monitoring and assessment. The so-called Total Water Storage Deficit Index (TWSDI) based on GRACE data has been widely used for characterizing drought events. Here we show that the commonly used TWSDI approach often exhibits significant inconsistencies with meteorological conditions, primarily upon presence of a trend in observations due to anthropogenic water use. In this study, we propose a modified version of TWSDI (termed, MTWSDI) that decomposes the anthropogenic and climatic-driven components of GRACE observations. We applied our approach for drought monitoring over the Ganges–Brahmaputra in India and Markazi basins in Iran. Results show that the newly developed MTWSDI exhibits consistency with meteorological drought indices in both basins. We also propose a deficit-based method for drought monitoring and recovery assessment using GRACE observations, providing useful information about volume of deficit, and minimum and average time for drought recovery. According to the deficit thresholds, water deficits caused by anthropogenic impacts every year in the Ganges–Brahmaputra basin and Markazi basins is almost equal to an abnormally dry condition and a moderate drought condition, receptively. It indicates that unsustainable human water use have led to a form of perpetual and accelerated anthropogenic drought in these basins. Continuation of this trend would deplete the basin and cause significant socio-economic challenges.

Gravimetry-based water storage shifting over the China-India border area controlled by regional climate variability

The regional water storage shifting causes nonstationary spatial distribution of droughts and flooding, leading to water management challenges, environmental degradation and economic losses. The regional water storage shifting is becoming evident due to the increasing climate variability. However, the previous studies for climate drivers behind the water storage shifting are not rigorously quantified. In this study, the terrestrial water storage (TWS) spatial shifting pattern during 2002-2017 over the China-India border area (CIBA) is developed using the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), suggesting that the Indus-Ganges-Brahmaputra basin (IGBB) was wetting while the central Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) was drying. Similar drying and wetting patterns were also found in the precipitation, snow depth, Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) and potential evaporation data. Based on our newly proposed Indian monsoon (IM) and western North Pacific monsoon (WNPM) variation indices, the water shifting pattern over the CIBA was found to be affected by the weakening of the variation of IM and WNPM through modulating the regional atmospheric circulation. The weakening of IM and WNPM variations has shown to be attributed to the decreasing temperature gradient between the CIBA and the Indian Ocean, and possibly related to increasing regional temperatures associated with the increasing global temperature. As the global warming intensifies, it is expected that the regional TWS shifting pattern over the CIBA will be further exaggerated, stressing the need of advancing water resources management for local communities in the region.

Drought Assessment using GRACE Terrestrial Water Storage Deficit in Mongolia from 2002 to 2017

Climate warming can result in increases in the frequency and magnitude of drought events, leading to water shortages and socioeconomic losses. Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite data have been used to monitor and estimate drought events. However, there is little information on detecting the characteristics of droughts in Mongolia due to sparse observations. In this study, we estimate the drought conditions in Mongolia using GRACE terrestrial water storage data during 2002–2017. Water storage deficit (WSD) is used to identify the drought event and calculate the water storage deficit index (WSDI). The WSDI was compared with the standardized precipitation index (SPI) and the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI). The results showed that there were two turning points of WSD in 2007 and 2012. Eight drought events were identified and the most severe drought occurred in 2007–2009 lasting for 38 months with a WSDI of −0.98 and a total WSD of −290.8 mm. Overall, the WSD and WSDI were effective in analyzing and assessing the drought severity in a region where hydrological observations are lacking.

Drought and Flood Monitoring of the Liao River Basin in Northeast China Using Extended GRACE Data

In recent years, alternating periods of floods and droughts, possibly related to climate change and/or human activity, have occurred in the Liao River Basin of China. To monitor and gain a deep understanding of the frequency and severity of the hydro-meteorological extreme events in the Liao River Basin in the past 30 years, the total storage deficit index (TSDI) is established by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE)-based terrestrial water storage anomalies (TWSAs) and the general regression neural network (GRNN)-predicted TWSA. Results indicate that the GRNN model trained with GRACE-based TWSA, model-simulated soil moisture, and precipitation observations was optimal, and the correlation coefficient and the root mean square error (RMSE) of the predicted TWSA and GRACE TWSA for the testing period equal 0.90 and 18 mm, respectively. The drought and flood conditions monitored by the TSDI were consistent with those of previous studies and records. The extreme climate events could indirectly reflect the status of the regional hydrological cycle. By monitoring the extreme climate events in the study area with TSDI, which was based on the TWSA of GRACE and GRNN, the decision of water resource management in the Liao River Basin could be made reasonably.
