A Mini Review on Thin Film Superconductors

Thin superconducting films have been a significant part of superconductivity research for more than six decades. They have had a significant impact on the existing consensus on the microscopic and macroscopic nature of the superconducting state. Thin-film superconductors have properties that are very different and superior to bulk material. Amongst the various classification criteria, thin-film superconductors can be classified into Fe based thin-film superconductors, layered titanium compound thin-film superconductors, intercalation compounds of layered and cage-like structures, and other thin-film superconductors that do not fall into these groups. There are various techniques of manufacturing thin films, which include atomic layer deposition (ALD), chemical vapour deposition (CVD), physical vapour deposition (PVD), molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), sputtering, electron beam evaporation, laser ablation, cathodic arc, and pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Thin film technology offers a lucrative scheme of creating engineered surfaces and opens a wide exploration of prospects to modify material properties for specific applications, such as those that depend on surfaces. This review paper reports on the different types and groups of superconductors, fabrication of thin-film superconductors by MBE, PLD, and ALD, their applications, and various challenges faced by superconductor technologies. Amongst all the thin film manufacturing techniques, more focus is put on the fabrication of thin film superconductors by atomic layer deposition because of the growing popularity the process has gained in the past decade.

The effect of annealing on optical transmittance and structure of ZLANI fluorozirconate glass thin films

We report the effect of thermal annealing on structure, composition, optical transmittance and thickness of a novel fluorozirconate glass (ZLANI) containing Zr, La, Al, Na and In fluorides. In this work, pulsed laser deposition was used to grow thin films of ZLANI, and thermal annealing at different temperatures was performed on the films. Annealing did not change the composition, but a clear structural evolution of the ZLANI glass was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), showing that we can control microstructure independent of composition. An increase in transmittance after the film was subject to a 100 °C thermal anneal was ascribed to the removal of defects and structural relaxation in the amorphous state. Following an anneal of 200 °C, the transmittance decreases due to heterogeneous formation of crystalline nuclei and changes in the local bonding. After the final annealing at 300 °C, a wider-scale crystallization occurred, with some major crystal phases formed as Zr₂F₈(H₂O)₆ and ZrO₂, which alters the shape of the transmittance curve. The crystalline content of the crystal phases that form in the annealed films was quantified using hollow cone dark field TEM imaging. The 100 °C or 200 °C annealing decreases the film thickness by inducing structural relaxation and densification of the amorphous films, while the thickness increase of the 300 °C annealed film resulted from the formed large crystals. These results provide insights for the design of multilayer nanocomposites with a ZLANI glass matrix, which have potential applications as up-/down-conversion luminescent materials and X-ray storage phosphors.

Microscopic origin of highly enhanced current carrying capabilities of thin NdFeAs(O,F) films

Fe-based superconductors present a large variety of compounds whose physical properties strongly depend on the crystal structure and chemical composition. Among them, the so-called 1111 compounds show the highest critical temperature T _c in the bulk form. Here we demonstrate the realization of excellent superconducting properties in NdFeAs(O_1-x F _x ). We systematically investigated the correlation between the microstructure at the nanoscale and superconductivity in an epitaxial 22 nm NdFeAs(O_1-x F _x ) thin film on a MgO single crystalline substrate (T _c = 44.7 K). Atomic resolution analysis of the microstructure by transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography identified several defects and other inhomogeneities at the nanoscale that can act as extrinsic pinning centers. X-Ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy displayed a broad variation of the a-axis lattice parameter either due to a partially strained layer at the interface to the substrate, high local strain at dislocation arrays, mosaicity, or due to composition variation within the film. The electrical transport properties are substantially affected by intrinsic pinning and a matching field corresponding to the film thickness and associated with the Bean-Livingston surface barrier of the surfaces. The thin film showed a self-field critical current density J _c(4.2 K) of ∼7.6 MA cm^-2 and a record pinning force density of F _p ≈ 1 TN m^-3 near 35 T for H‖ab at 4.2 K. These investigations highlight the role of the microstructure in fine-tuning and possibly functionalizing the superconductivity of Fe-based superconductors.

Second Harmonic Generation Response in Thermally reconstructed Multiferroic β'- Gd2(MoO4)3 Thin Films

Gd₂(MoO₄)₃ (GMO) is a well-studied multiferroic material that exhibits full ferroelectric and ferroelastic behavior at room temperature. However, its difficult stabilization in thin films has prevented the study and exploitation of its multiferroic properties in different architectures. Here, we report on the study of GMO thin films deposited on Si(001) substrates by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). The physicochemical properties of the films are discussed and studied. Results obtained by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high resolution transmission microscopy and second harmonic generation show that the orthorhombic (β′-GMO) multiferroic phase can be stabilized and homogenized by post deposition thermal reconstruction. Finally, the reconstruction process takes place via a complex surface mechanism with a clear leaf-like behavior.
