Anionic Bismuth-Oxido Carboxylate Clusters with Transition Metal Countercations

Six new anionic bismuth-oxido clusters containing trifluoroacetate ligands were prepared. These include two new Bi₆O₈ clusters: [M(NCMe)₂(H₂O)₄]₃[Bi₆(μ₃-O)₄(μ₃-OH)₄(CF₃CO₂)₁₂] with an octahedral Bi₆O₄(OH)₄ core (M = Ni, 1a; Co, 1b) and four Bi₄O₂ clusters, {[Co(NCMe)₆][Bi₄(μ₃-O)₂(CF₃CO₂)₁₀]}_n (2a), {[Co{HC(MeCO)₂(MeCNH)}₂][Bi₄(μ₃-O)₂(CF₃CO₂)₁₀]·2[CF₃CO₂]·2[CF₃CO₂H]·2[H₂O]}_n (2b), {[Cu(NCMe)₄]₂[Bi₄(μ₃-O)₂(CF₃CO₂)₁₀]·2[CF₃CO₂H]}_n (2c), and {[Me₄N]₂[Bi₄(μ₃-O)₂(CF₃CO₂)₁₀]·2[CF₃CO₂H]}_n (2d). These are among the first bismuth-oxido anionic clusters synthesized, and the first to have transition metal countercations. The Bi₆O₈ anion in 1a and 1b is a high-symmetry octahedron. Additionally, two of the new Bi₄O₂ clusters are arranged in 1D polymeric structures via bridging carboxylate ligands. The cation in compound 2c had not been previously characterized and was also observed in the synthesis of [Co{HC(MeCO)₂(MeCNH)}₂][Bi(NO₃)₆] (3). The new compounds were characterized using single crystal X-ray crystallography and elemental analysis.

A new linear bismuth coordination polymer based on 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acid: ionothermal synthesis, crystal structure and fluorescence properties

A new linear bismuth(III) coordination polymer, catena-poly[[chloridobismuth(III)]-μ3-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylato-κ(6)O(2):O(2),N(1),N(10),O(9):O(9)], [Bi(C14H6N2O4)Cl]n, has been obtained by an ionothermal method and characterized by elemental analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, thermal stability studies and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure is constructed by Bi(C14H6N2O4)Cl fragments in which each Bi(III) centre is seven-coordinated by one Cl atom, four O atoms and two N atoms. The coordination geometry of the Bi(III) cation is distorted pentagonal-bipyramidal (BiO4N2Cl), with one bridging carboxylate O atom and one Cl atom located in the axial positions. The Bi(C14H6N2O4)Cl fragments are further extended into a one-dimensional linear polymeric structure via subsequent but different centres of symmetry (bridging carboxylate O atoms). Neighbouring linear chains are assembled via weak C-H···O and C-H···Cl hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture. Intermolecular π-π stacking interactions are observed, with centroid-to-centroid distances of 3.678 (4) Å, which further stabilize the structure. In addition, the solid-state fluorescence properties of the title coordination polymer were investigated.

A novel dinuclear bismuth(III) coordination compound: bis(μ-pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylato)-κ4O2,N,O6:O6′;κ4O2:O2′,N,O6-bis[(azido-κN)(1,10-phenanthroline-κ2N,N')bismuth(III)] tetrahydrate

A novel dinuclear bismuth(III) coordination compound, [Bi2(C7H3NO4)2(N3)2(C12H8N2)2]·4H2O, has been synthesized by an ionothermal method and characterized by elemental analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, IR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The molecular structure consists of one centrosymmetric dinuclear neutral fragment and four water molecules. Within the dinuclear fragment, each Bi(III) centre is seven-coordinated by three O atoms and four N atoms. The coordination geometry of each Bi(III) atom is distorted pentagonal-bipyramidal (BiO3N4), with one azide N atom and one bridging carboxylate O atom located in axial positions. The carboxylate O atoms and water molecules are assembled via O-H···O hydrogen bonds, resulting in the formation of a three-dimensional supramolecular structure. Two types of π-π stacking interactions are found, with centroid-to-centroid distances of 3.461 (4) and 3.641 (4) Å.

Synthesis and structural studies of the simplest bismuth(iii) oxo-salicylate complex: [Bi4(μ3-O)2(HO-2-C6H4CO2)8]·2Solv (Solv = MeCN or MeNO2)

Reaction of BiPh₃ with salicylic acid at room temperature in wet acetonitrile or nitromethane leads to the facile formation of the simplest bismuth oxo salicylate cluster found to date.

Crystal structure, antibacterial and cytotoxic activities of a new complex of bismuth(III) with sulfapyridine

A new complex of Bi(III) and sulfapyridine was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, atomic absorption spectrometry, conductivity analysis, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), infrared spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The antimicrobial and the cytotoxic activities of the compound were investigated. Elemental and conductivity analyses are in accordance to the formulation [BiCl₃(C₁₁H₁₁N₃O₂S)₃]. The structure of the complex reveals a distorted octahedral geometry around the bismuth atom, which is bound to three sulfonamidic nitrogens from sulfapyridine, acting as a monodentate ligand, and to three chloride ions. The presence of the compound in solution was confirmed by ESI-MS studies. The complex is 3 times more potent than the ligand against Salmonella typhimurium, 4 times against Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella dysenteriae, and Shigella sonnei and 8 times more potent against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. The compound inhibits the growth of chronic myelogenous leukemia cells with an IC₅₀ value of 44 μM whereas the free ligand has no effect up to 100 μM.

Bismuth(III) 5-sulfosalicylate complexes: structure, solubility and activity against Helicobacter pylori

Treatment of 5-sulfosalicylic acid (H(3)Ssal) with BiPh(3) results in the formation of the first dianionic carboxylate-sulfonate bismuth complex, [PhBi(HSsal)H(2)O](infinity) 1a, and its ethanol analogue [PhBi(HSsal)EtOH](infinity) 1b (space group P2(1)/c), while Bi(OAc)(3) gives the mixed monoanionic and dianionic complex, {[Bi(HSsal)(H(2)Ssal)(H(2)O)(3)](2) x 2 H(2)O}(infinity) 2 (space group P1). The three complexes are all polymeric in the solid state as determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, with extended frameworks constructed from dimeric [Bi(HSsal)](2), 1a and 1b, or from [Bi(HSsal)(H(2)Ssal)](2) units, 2. The heteroleptic bismuth complexes 1a and 2 display remarkable aqueous solubility, 10 and 2.5 mg ml(-1) respectively, resulting in a clear solution of pH 1.5. In contrast, 1b is essentially insoluble in aqueous environments. All three complexes show significant activity against the bacterium Helicobacter pylori of <6.25 microg ml(-1).

Base hydrolysis of BiO(ClO4) yields ClO4- salts of the novel nonabismuth polyoxo cation Bi9(mu3-O)8(mu3-OH)6(5+); ethanolysis converts to the ethoxide Bi9(mu3-O)8(mu3-OEt)6(5+).
