New thiol adsorbent grafted on silica gel: synthesis, characterization and employment for heavy metal adsorptions

A Bayesian assessment of occupational health surveillance in workers exposed to silica in the energy and construction industry

Medical records generated during occupational health surveillance processes have large amounts of unexploited information that can help to reduce silica-related health risks and many occupational diseases. The methodology applied in this study consists in analyzing through machine learning techniques a database with 70,000 medical examinations from workers in the energy and construction industry in Spain. First, a general unsupervised Bayesian model is built and node force analysis is used to identify the factors with the greatest impact on the worker's health surveillance process. Second, a predictive Bayesian model is created and mutual information is employed to assess the more relevant factors affecting the medical capability of workers exposed to silica dust. The lung auscultation and the breathing exploration are the two factors that influence the most the medical capability of silica-exposed employees. Probabilistic inference shows a remarkable gender effect, where women present more resilience towards occupational diseases than men showing a higher proportion of normal results in certain key factors, such as body mass index (♀49.73%, ♂25.17%) or spirometry (♀53.73%, ♂48.91%). Finally, environmental conditions demonstrate to have a major influence on spatial variability of occupational diseases. The design of health prevention programs based on geographical variations can be crucial to the attainment of an ongoing and sustained healthier workforce with a reduction in the number of chronic workplace illnesses.

Formation mechanism and size control in one-pot synthesis of mercapto-silica colloidal spheres

Mercapto-silica spheres with controllable size from ∼150 nm to ∼3.5 μm and narrow size distribution have been prepared in water using a one-pot synthesis, in which 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) was used as the sole silica source and ammonia as the base catalyst. The hydrolysis of MPS at the early stage of the reaction produces amphiphilic silicate species which initiate the self-emulsification of the system and lead to the formation of oil-in-water emulsion droplets. Further hydrolysis and condensation promote the nucleation and growth of the mercapto-silica spheres inside the emulsion droplets. These mercapto-silica spheres are both structurally and functionally different from typical silica particles prepared from silicon alkoxides. Understanding the formation mechanism allows systematic tuning of the size of mercapto-silica spheres in a wide range by changing the amount of precursor, the concentration of ammonia, the amount of additional surfactants, and the reaction time. We find that Ostwald ripening may occur quickly if the spheres are kept in the reaction solution, resulting in significant broadening of the particle size distribution. In order to obtain uniform and stable samples, it is important to quench the growth of the mercapto-silica spheres by separating them from the original reaction mixture and then storing them in solvents that can prevent further ripening.

Functionalized HMS mesoporous silica as solid phase extractant for Pb(II) prior to its determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry

In this work, a mesoporous silica has been chemically modified with 5-mercapto-1-methyl-1-H-tetrazol using the homogeneous route (MTTZ-HMS). This synthetic route involved the reaction of 5-mercapto-1-methyl-1-H-tetrazol with 3-chloropropyltriethoxysilane, prior to immobilization on the support. The resulting material has been characterized and employed as solid phase extractant for Pb(II). The effect of several variables (stirring time, pH, temperature, metal concentration, presence of other metals) has been studied using batch and column techniques. In batch experiments, 15 min stirring time, 55 degrees C and pH 8 were the optimal conditions for Pb(II) adsorption. In column experiments, sorption was quantitative for 1000 mL of 2.41 x 10(-4 )mM of Pb(II) solution and adsorbed ions were eluted out by 5 mL of 1 M HCl (preconcentration factor of 200). Spiked tap water was used for the preconcentration and determination of Pb(II) by flame atomic absorption spectrometry, and a 100% recovery was obtained. The LOD and LOQ values of the proposed method were found to be 3.52 x 10(-3) and 4.20 x 10(-3 )mM, respectively. The RSD for three preconcentration experiments was found to be <or= 2%. The linear working range for measurements was between 2 x 10(-3 )and 0.14 mM (y = 0.0136x + 0.0007, R(2 )= 0.9999).

Monodisperse magnetizable composite silica spheres with tunable dipolar interactions

We demonstrate that magnetic particles of maghemite (gamma-Fe(2)O(3)) and cobalt ferrite (CoFe(2)O(4)) can be irreversibly attached to colloidal silica that is grafted with 3-mercaptopropyl(trimethoxy)silane (followed by the controlled growth of a silica layer) to obtain stable dispersions of monodisperse colloidal silica spheres that contain a dense shell of ferrite particles at an adjustable distance from the sphere surface. Magnetization of the ferrite shell induces a large dipole moment, and adjusting the thickness of the outer silica layer enables one to tune the contact attraction. This novel type of magnetizable silica colloid exhibits structure formation in a homogeneous field that varies from isotropic distributions to elongated dipolar chains.

Al2O3-coated 3-N-propylpyridinium chloride silsesquioxane polymer film: preparation and electrochemical property study of adsorbed cobalt tetrasulfophthalocyanine

Porous Al2O3 presenting a specific surface area of SBET = 105 m2 g(-1) was coated with 3-N-propylpyridinium chloride silsesquioxane polymer. The ion exchange capacity of this polymer grafted onto an Al2O3 surface, resulting in a material designated as AlSiPy(+)Cl-, was 1.09 mmol g(-1). Furthermore, a cobalt(II) tetrasulfophthalocyanine anionic complex was immobilized on the chemically modified surface by an ion exchange reaction with a yield of 40 micromol g(-1) (the surface density of the electroactive species is 3.80 x 10(-11) mol cm(-2)). The electrochemical properties of the material obtained, AlSiPy/CoTsPc, were tested for the catalytic oxidation of oxalic acid at 0.77 V vs SCE in 1.0 mol l(-1) KCl solution. Furthermore, a chronoamperometric technique was used with the electrode to test its potential use as a sensor for oxalic acid. The electrode response to oxalic acid concentrations between 1.0 and 3.5 mmol l(-1) was linear with an estimated detection limit of 0.5 mmol l(-1). The charge transfer resistance of the material, measured using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique, was 43 Omega cm2.
