Abstract
The effect of solvents of varying polarity on the absorption and fluorescence emission of the Schiff base, 2-{[3-(1H-benzimidazole-2-yl) phenyl]carbonoimidoyl}phenol, was studied using Lippert-Mataga bulk polarity function, Reichardt's microscopic solvent polarity parameter and Kamlet's multiple linear regression approach. The spectral properties follow Reichardt's microscopic solvent polarity parameter better than Lippert-Mataga bulk polarity parameter, indicating the presence of both general solute-solvent interactions and specific interactions. Catalan's multiple linear regression approach indicates the major role of solvent polarizability/dipolarity influence compared with solvent acidity or basicity. The solvatochromic effect was utilized to calculate the dipole moments of ground and excited states of the Schiff base using different methods. Bathochromic shift in the emission spectrum and the increase in dipole moment in the excited state signifies the intramolecular charge transfer character in the emitting singlet state. Fluorescence quenching by aniline was also studied in 1,4-dioxane and n-butanol, and the results were analyzed using sphere of action static quenching and finite sink approximation models.

Abstract
The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(24)H(20)N(2)S(4), contains one half-mol-ecule: a crystallographic centre of inversion is located at the mid-point of the two central C atoms. The thio-phene ring is oriented at a dihedral angle of 60.64 (3)° with respect to the benzene ring. In the crystal structure, π-π contacts between thio-phene rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.581 (1) Å] may stabilize the structure. A weak C-H⋯π inter-action is also present.

Abstract
New 3,4:9,10-dibenzo-2,11-dihydroxy-1,12-bispiperazine-5,8-dioxododecane complexes [C(24)H(36)N(4)O(6)Cu] (1), [C(24)H(32)N(4)O(4)Zn] (2) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, NMR, Mass, EPR, UV-vis spectroscopy and molar conductance measurements. The complexes are non-ionic in nature and possess octahedral geometry around Cu(2+), Zn(2+) central metal ions. The binding studies of 1 and 2 with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) were investigated by UV-vis, fluorescence, cyclic voltammetery and viscosity measurements. The calculated binding constant K(b) for 1 and 2 obtained from UV-vis absorption studies was 7.6x10(3)M(-1), 80.8x10(4)M(-1), respectively. The intrinsic binding constants were also estimated to be 7.0x10(4)M(-1) and 7.53x10(5)M(-1) for 1 and 2, respectively by using emission titrations. These experimental results suggest that complexes are groove binders and interact to CT-DNA with different affinities. Both the complexes in presence and absence of CT-DNA show quasireversible wave corresponding to Cu(II)/Cu(I) and Zn(II)/Zn(I) redox couple. The changes in E(1/2), DeltaE, I(pa)/I(pc) ascertain the interaction of 1 and 2 with CT-DNA. Further, decrease in viscosity of CT-DNA with increasing concentration of complexes was observed. In vitro, antimicrobial activity against fungi A. brassicicola, A. niger and bacteria E. coli, P. aeruginosa of complexes were carried out, which indicate that complex 2 is more active against both fungal and bacterial strains as shown by % inhibition data.

Abstract
A novel interesting hexadentate dibasic N(2)S(2)O(2) donor Schiff base ligand, H(4)dcsalpte, was synthesized by the condensation of 3-formylsalicylic acid and 1,2-di(o-aminophenylthio)ethane and characterized. The reactions of the ligand with different metal(II/III)salts under varied reaction conditions afforded a series of metal complexes. The ligand, H(4)dcsalpte, behaves either as a dibasic or neutral hexadentate one, depending on the reaction conditions. Structural investigations on the ligand and their complexes have been made based on elemental analyses, molar conductance values, magnetic moment values, cryomagnetic and spectral (UV-vis, IR, (1)H NMR, and Mössbauer) data. Based on magnetic susceptibility, Mössbauer and electronic spectral data the iron(III) complex [Fe(III)(H(2)dcsalpte)]ClO(4) (8), isolated in the present investigation, it is inferred that the spin states 5/2 and 1/2 are in equilibrium. Similarly a tri-iron(III) complex [Fe(III)(3)(H(2)dcsalpte)(H(3)dcsalpte)Cl(3)]Cl(3) (7), isolated in this study, has been inferred to contain two iron(III) sites in tetrahedral environment and one in the octahedral environment. The aerial oxidation of an equimolar mixture of H(4)dcsalpte and Co(CH(3)COO)(2).4H(2)O in ethanol under reflux gave two products, [Co(H(2)dcsalpte)]CH(3)COO (10) and [(Hbtcsaldm)Co(Hbvcsaldm)] (11), a cobalt(III) complex bound to two dissimilar tridentate NSO donor ligands formed as a result of the oxidative cleavage of the CS bond. In the complex 11, Hbtcsaldm stands for the dianion of the tridentate Schiff base ligand N-(2'-benzenethiol)-3-carboxysalicylaldimine and Hbvcsaldm stands for the mono anion of the tridentate Schiff base ligand N-(benzene-2'-S-vinyl)-3-carboxysalicylaldimine, both being formed as a result of the oxidative cleavage of H(4)dcsalpte.
