Abstract
Slightly different reaction conditions afforded two distinct cavity-shaped cis-chelating diphosphanes from the same starting materials, namely diphenyl(2-phosphanylphenyl)phosphane and an α-cyclodextrin-derived dimesylate. Thanks to their metal-confining properties, the two diphosphanes form only mononuclear [CuX(PP)] complexes (X=Cl, Br, or I) with the tricoordinated metal ion located just above the center of the cavity. The two series of CuI complexes display markedly different luminescence properties that are both influenced by the electronic properties of the ligand and the unique steric environment provided by the cyclodextrin (CD) cavity. The excited state lifetimes of all complexes are significantly longer than those of the cavity-free analogues suggesting peculiar electronic effects that affect radiative deactivation constants. The overall picture stemming from absorption and emission data suggests close-lying charge-transfer (MLCT, XLCT) and triplet ligand-centered (LC) excited states.

Abstract
A β-cyclodextrin-based diphosphane with metal-confining properties was efficiently synthesized thanks to an unprecedented Smiles-like rearrangement of diphenyl-(2-phosphanylphenyl)phosphane in the presence of excess n-BuLi. The cis-chelating bidentate ligand is capable of forming very stable heteroleptic [Cu(NN)(PP)]+ complexes in which a metal-bound diimine ligand (bpy, phen, or mmp) is located within the cyclodextrin cavity. As a result of ligand encapsulation, flattening of the metal tetrahedral geometry in the excited state is disfavored, thereby resulting in enhanced luminescent properties.

Abstract
The presence of a permethylated α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) cavity in a chelating P,N ligand promotes exclusive formation of 1 : 1 ligand/metal complexes. In MX2 complexes, one of the two halido ligands is forced to reside inside the CD hollow while the second one is pointing outside. Unlike its cavity-free analogue, a Ni(II) complex of the CD ligand is a highly selective precatalyst for ethylene dimerisation (96% C4 selectivity with up to 95% of 1-butene within the C4 fraction).

Abstract
The capacity of two cavity-shaped ligands, HUGPHOS-1 and HUGPHOS-2, to generate exclusively singly phosphorus-ligated complexes, in which the cyclodextrin cavity tightly wraps around the metal centre, was explored with a number of late transition metal cations. Both cyclodextrin-derived ligands were assessed in palladium-catalysed Mizoroki-Heck coupling reactions between aryl bromides and styrene on one hand, and the rhodium-catalysed asymmetric hydroformylation of styrene on the other hand. The inability of both chiral ligands to form standard bis(phosphine) complexes under catalytic conditions was established by high-pressure NMR studies and shown to have a deep impact on the two carbon-carbon bond forming reactions both in terms of activity and selectivity. For example, when used as ligands in the rhodium-catalysed hydroformylation of styrene, they lead to both high isoselectivity and high enantioselectivity. In the study dealing with the Mizoroki-Heck reactions, comparative tests were carried out with WIDEPHOS, a diphosphine analogue of HUGPHOS-2.

Abstract
Two confining phosphane ligands derived from either α- or β-cyclodextrin produce singly P(III) -ligated metal complexes with unusual coordination spheres. High-pressure NMR studies have revealed that rhodium hydride complexes of the same type are also formed under hydroformylation conditions. This unique feature strongly favors the formation of the branched aldehyde at the expense of the linear one with high enantioselectivity in the rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of styrene.

Abstract
The replacement of hazardous solvents and the utilization of catalytic processes are two key points of the green chemistry movement, so aqueous organometallic catalytic processes are of great interest in this context. Nevertheless, these processes require not only the use of water-soluble ligands such as phosphanes to solubilise the transition metals in water, but also the use of mass transfer agents to increase the solubility of organic substrates in water. In this context, phosphanes based on a cyclodextrin skeleton are an interesting alternative since these compounds can simultaneously act as mass transfer agents and as coordinating species towards transition metals. For twenty years, various cyclodextrin-functionalized phosphanes have been described in the literature. Nevertheless, while their coordinating properties towards transition metals and their catalytic properties were fully detailed, their mass transfer agent properties were much less discussed. As these mass transfer agent properties are directly linked to the availability of the cyclodextrin cavity, the aim of this review is to demonstrate that the nature of the reaction solvent and the nature of the linker between cyclodextrin and phosphorous moieties can deeply influence the recognition properties. In addition, the impact on the catalytic activity will be also discussed.

Abstract
Forty years after Venanzi's seminal studies on trans-spanning diphosphines, a cavity-shaped trans chelator (TRANSDIP) has been used to monitor the stepwise formation of a carbon-carbon bond on a palladium centre. Furthermore, the ligand, which incorporates a cyclodextrin subunit, enabled the synthesis of the first η(2)-dioxygen complex in which the M-O(2) unit is entrapped within a cavity.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] A series of modified gamma-cyclodextrins (CDs) with a flexible or rigid cap, synthesized and used as chiral supramolecular hosts for mediating the enantiodifferentiating photocyclodimerization of 2-anthracenecarboxylic acid, significantly improved the chemical and optical yields of chiral head-to-head cyclodimer 3, while the gamma-CD with a rigid cap dramatically inverted the stereochemical outcomes and further improved the enantioselectivities of both head-to-tail and head-to-head dimers 2 and 3.

Abstract
Ansa-cyclodextrins were obtained in high yields by reaction of sodium sulfide with A,B-di- or A,B,D,E-tetramesylated alpha-CD precursors; the resulting thiocavitands are suitable for forming nanotubular molecules, as well as for hosting metal-organic fragments.

Abstract
Container-shaped molecules provide structured environments that impart geometric bounds on the motions and conformations of smaller molecular occupants. Moreover, they provide "solvation" that is constrained in time and space. When inwardly directed functional groups are present, they can interact chemically with the occupants. Additionally, the potential for reactivity and catalysis is greatly enhanced. Deep cavitands, derived from resorcinarenes, nearly surround smaller molecules and have been one of the most successful platforms for elaboration with functional groups. Derivatives bearing organic and metal-binding functional groups have been shown to affect recognition properties and selectively accelerate diverse reactions. In this review, we examine recent examples of these systems with an emphasis on how and why ordered nanoenvironments impart changes in the properties and reactivity of their occupants.

Abstract
The potential of molecules that combine the properties of a conical cavity with those of a covalently-linked transition-metal centre is highlighted through the assessment of cyclodextrin- and calixarene-derived podands ("cavitand" ligands) in coordination chemistry and catalysis. Metallocavitands with coordination sites directed towards the interior of the generic cavity provide interesting systems for studying host-guest complexation processes, their enhanced strength of metal-ion binding allowing for regioselective catalysis in a confined environment, and stabilisation of coordination complexes of unusual forms. Where cavitands have exo-oriented podand arms, the intrinsic dynamics of the cavity can dramatically modify metal chelation behaviour and the catalytic properties of the complexes. Such functionalised cavities are also useful as metal-ion transporters.
