Abstract
Methane dehydrogenation and C-C coupling under mild conditions are very important but challenging in chemistry. Utilizing a customized time of flight mass spectrometer combined with a magnetron sputtering (MagS) cluster source, here, we have conducted a study on the reactions of methane with small silver and copper clusters simply by introducing methane in argon as the working gas for sputtering. Interestingly, a series of [M(CnH2n)]+ (M = Cu and Ag; n = 2-12) clusters were observed, indicating high-efficiency methane dehydrogenation in such a plasma-assisted chamber system. Density functional theory calculations find the lowest energy structures of the [M(CnH2n)]+ series pertaining to olefins indicative of both C-H bond activation of methane and C-C bond coupling. We analyzed the interactions involved in the [Cu(CnH2n)]+ and [Ag(CnH2n)]+ (n = 1-6) clusters and demonstrated the reaction coordinates for the "Cu+ + CH4" and "Ag+ + CH4." It is illustrated that the presence of a second methane molecule enables us to reduce the necessary energy of dehydrogenation, which concurs with the experimental observation of an absence of the metal carbine products Cu+CH2 and Ag+CH2, which are short-lived. Also, it is elucidated that the higher-lying excitation states of Cu+ and Ag+ ions enable more favorable dehydrogenation process and C═C bond formation, shedding light on the plasma assistance of the essence.

Abstract
The hydrofluoroolefin Z-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene has been activated via an initial C-F bond activation and subsequent C-H bond activation using [Rh(H)(PEt3)3] (1) or via C-H bond activation at [Rh(CH3)(PEt3)3] (8). In both cases the formation of [Rh{(E)-CF[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCF3}(PEt3)3] (3) was observed. Importantly, the C-F activation product [Rh{(E)-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCF3}(PEt3)3] (2) reacts in the presence of Z-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene into 3. The latter converted into [Rh(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CCF3)(PEt3)3] (6) by an unprecedented dehydrofluorination reaction, presumably via a vinylidene complex as intermediate. When the carbonyl complex [Rh(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CCF3)(CO)(PEt3)3] (12) was treated with an excess of NEt3·3HF or HBF4 at low temperature, the formation of the phosphonioalkenyl compounds [Rh{(Z)-C(PEt3)[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCF3}(CO)(PEt3)2]X (X = F(HF) x , BF4) (13) was observed. The formation of 13 can be explained by an attack of PEt3 at the electrophilic α-carbon atom of an intermediate vinylidene complex. The employment of PiPr3 derivatives as model compounds allowed for the isolation of the unique fluorido vinylidene complex trans-[Rh(F)([double bond, length as m-dash]C[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCF3)(PiPr3)2] (16), which in the presence of PEt3 transforms into [Rh(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CCF3)(PEt3)3] (6).

Abstract
The reaction of the rhodium(i) complexes [Rh(E)(PEt3)3] (E = GePh3 (1), Si(OEt)3 (5)) with HFO-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) afforded [Rh(F)(PEt3)3] (2) and the functionalized olefins Z-CF3CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH(E) (E = GePh3 (4a), Si(OEt)3 (7)). Conceivable reaction pathways were assessed using DFT calculations. Reactions of [Rh(E)(PEt3)3] with HFO-1234ze (E-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) yielded the rhodium fluorido complex 2 and [Rh{(E)-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH(CF3)}(PEt3)3] (9) via two different reaction pathways. Using complexes 1 and 5 as catalysts, functionalized building blocks were obtained.

Abstract
The rhodium(i) complexes [Rh(Bpin)(PEt3)3] (1), [Rh(H)(PEt3)3] (5) and [Rh(Me)(PEt3)3] (14) were employed in reactions with pentafluorostyrene affording coordination of the olefin and C-F or C-H bond activation. Control of the reaction conditions allowed for selective activation reactions at different positions at the fluorinated aromatic ring. The rhodacycle trans-[Rh(F)(CH2CH2(2-C6F4))(PEt3)2] (7) was identified as an intermediate for an activation at the 2-position. Reactivity studies of the latter with CO led to the generation of trans-[Rh(F)(CH2CH2C6F4)(CO)(PEt3)2] (10). Stoichiometric and catalytic hydroboration reactions were achieved using complexes 1 or 5 as catalysts.

Abstract
The reaction of [Rh(H)(PEt3 )3 ] (1) with the refrigerant HFO-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) affords an efficient route to obtain [Rh(F)(PEt3 )3 ] (3) by C-F bond activation. Catalytic hydrodefluorinations were achieved in the presence of the silane HSiPh3 . In the presence of a fluorosilane, 3 provides a C-H bond activation followed by a 1,2-fluorine shift to produce [Rh{(E)-C(CF3 )=CHF}(PEt3 )3 ] (4). Similar rearrangements of HFO-1234yf were observed at [Rh(E)(PEt3 )3 ] [E=Bpin (6), C7 D7 (8), Me (9)]. The ability to favor C-H bond activation using 3 and fluorosilane is also demonstrated with 3,3,3-trifluoropropene. Studies are supported by DFT calculations.

Abstract
The reactivity of [Ni(cod)2] towards perfluorophenazine in the presence of phosphines is reported. When PiPr3 and PCy3 are used, an initial κ-(N) coordination of the nickel centre to the nitrogen atom of the perfluorophenazine ring occurs, forming the dark blue complexes [Ni{κ-(N)-C12N2F8}(PiPr3)2] (1) and [Ni{κ-(N)-C12N2F8}(PCy3)2] (2). Complex 1 was structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. The complexes rearranged by regioselective C-F activation of the perfluorophenazine ring in the 2-position to yield complexes trans-[NiF(2-C12N2F7)(PiPr3)2] (5) and trans-[NiF(2-C12N2F7)(PCy3)2] (6). The structure of 6 was also determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Kinetic measurements for the decrease of 1 at different temperatures reveal a first order reaction with ΔH‡ = 19 ± 7 kcal mol-1. Initially, small amounts of an intermediate, assigned as [Ni(η2-1,2-C12N2F8)(PiPr3)2] (3), were observed, which exhibits a 1,2-η2 coordination of the perfluorophenazine. DFT calculations on the same transformation were also computed, which suggest that both a phosphine-assisted mechanism and an oxidative addition can be operating reaction pathways. The 1,2-η2 complex [Ni(η2-1,2-C12N2F8)(PEt3)2] (4) was obtained when PEt3 was used as ligand, and an unstable dark red complex trans-[NiF(2-C12N2F7)(PEt3)2] (7) formed rapidly by C-F activation. The reactivity of the perfluorophenazine was compared with those of perfluorodibenzo-p-dioxin. In this case, no prior coordination was observed and the C-F activation took place in a less selective manner forming trans-[NiF(1-C12O2F7)(PiPr3)2] (8) and trans-[NiF(2-C12O2F7)(PiPr3)2] (9), outlining the role of the nitrogen for the selectivity of the process. Treatment of two equivalents of [Ni(cod)2] and four equivalents of PiPr3 with perfluorophenazine afforded a double C-F activation to give [{trans-(PiPr3)2NiF}2(2,7-C12N2F6)] (10).

Abstract
A tricoordinated gold(I) chloride complex, tBuXantphosAuCl, supported by a sterically bulky 9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(di-tert-butylphosphino)xanthene ligand (tBuXantphos) was synthesized. This complex features a remarkably longer Au-Cl bond length [2.632(1) Å] than bicoordinated linear gold complexes (2.27-2.30 Å) and tricoordinated XantphosAuCl [2.462(1) Å]. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of a cocrystal of tBuXantphosAuCl and pentafluoronitrobenzene (PFNB) and UV-vis spectroscopic titration experiments revealed the existence of an anion-π interaction between the Cl anion ligand and PFNB. Stoichiometric reaction between PFNB and tBuXantphosAuOtBu, after replacement of Cl by a more nucleophilic tBuO anion ligand, showed higher reactivity and para selectivity in the transformation of C-F to C-OtBu bond, distinctively different from that when only KOtBu was used (ortho selectivity) under the identical condition. Mechanistic studies including density functional theory calculations suggested a gold-mediated nucleophilic ligand attack of the C-F bond pathway via an SNAr process. On the basis of these results, using trimethylsilyl derivatives TMS-X (X = OMe, SEt, NEt2) as the nucleophilic ligand source and the fluorine acceptor, catalytic transformation of the C-F bond of aromatic substrates to the C-X (X = O, S, N) bond was achieved with tBuXantphosAuCl as the catalyst (up to 20 turnover numbers).

Abstract
The rhodium(i) germyl complex [Rh(GePh3)(PEt3)3] is a useful tool for C–F and C–H bond activation reactions. For instance, treatment with hexafluoropropene results in the formation of two isomeric C–F activation products [Rh{(E)-CFCF(CF3)}(PEt3)3] and [Rh{(Z)-CFCF(CF3)}(PEt3)3] in a 3 : 1 ratio.

Abstract
The rhodium(i) silyl carbonyl complexes [Rh{Si(OEt)3}(CO)(dippp)] () and [Rh{Si(OEt)3}(CO)(dippe)] () (dippp = 1,3-bis(diisopropylphosphino)propane, dippe = 1,2-bis-(diisopropylphosphino)ethane) were synthesized on treatment of the methyl compounds [Rh(CH3)(CO)(dippp)] () or [Rh(CH3)(CO)(dippe)] () with HSi(OEt)3 at low temperature. The methyl complexes and were prepared starting from the binuclear complexes [{Rh(μ-Cl)(dippp)}2] () and [{Rh(μ-Cl)(dippe)}2] (), respectively. The silyl complexes and as well as the precursors [{Rh(μ-I)(dippp)}2] (), [Rh(X)(CO)(dippp)] (: X = CH3, : X = I) and [Rh(X)(CO)(dippe)] (: X = CH3, : X = Cl) were characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy and the structures in the solid state were determined by X-ray crystallography. The silyl complex converts into the carbonyl-bridged complex [{Rh(μ-CO)(dippp)}2] () above temperatures of -30 °C by loss of the silyl ligand, whereas is more thermally stable and a reaction to the binuclear complex [{Rh(μ-CO)(dippe)}2] () was observed at 50 °C. The silyl complex reacted under irradiation with hexafluorobenzene and pentafluoropyridine to give the C-F activation products [Rh(C6F5)(CO)(dippe)] () and [Rh(2-C5F4N)(CO)(dippe)] (), respectively. As additional products the silyl dicarbonyl complex [Rh{Si(OEt)3}(CO)2(dippe)] () and the cationic complex [Rh2(μ-H)(μ-CO)2(dippe)2](+)[SiF5](-) () were identified. Compound was synthesized independently by treatment of with gaseous CO. In a similar manner, the dippp analogue [Rh{Si(OEt)3}(CO)2(dippp)] () was also prepared starting from . Photochemical reaction of with pentafluorobenzene and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine resulted selectively in C-H bond activation to afford and [Rh(4-C5F4N)(CO)(dippe)] (), respectively.

Abstract
C-F activation of 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine at [Rh{Si(OEt)3}(PEt3)3] (1) yields [Rh{2-(3,5,6-C5F3HN)}(PEt3)3] (2) and FSi(OEt)3, but in an unprecedented consecutive reaction FSi(OEt)3 acts as a fluoride source to give [Rh(4-C5F4N)(PEt3)3] (4) by regeneration of the C-F bond and C-H activation. Analogous refluorination steps were observed for other 2-pyridyl rhodium complexes. NMR spectroscopic studies revealed a delicate balance between the feasibility for C-F bond formation accompanied by a C-H activation and the occurrence of competing reactions such as hydrodefluorinations induced by the intermediary presence of H2.

Abstract
An unprecedented reaction pathway for the borylation of SCF3-containing arenes using [Rh(Bpin)(PEt3)3] (pin=pinacolato) is reported. Catalytic processes were developed and the functionalizations proceed under mild reaction conditions. The C-H activations occur with a unique regioselectivity for the position ortho to the SCF3 group, which apparently serves as directing group. Borylated SCF3 compounds can serve as versatile building blocks.

Abstract
Irradiation of CpRh(PMe3)(C2H4) (1; Cp = η5-C5H5) in the presence of pentafluoropyridine in hexane solution at low temperature yields an isolable η2-C,C-coordinated pentafluoropyridine complex, CpRh(PMe3)(η2-C,C-C5NF4) (2). The molecular structure of 2 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, showing coordination by C3-C4, unlike previous structures of pentafluoropyridine complexes that show N-coordination. Corresponding experiments with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine yield the C-H oxidative addition product CpRh(PMe3)(C5NF4)H (3). In contrast, UV irradiation of 1 in hexane, in the presence of 4-substituted tetrafluoropyridines C5NF4X, where X = NMe2, OMe, results in elimination of C2H4 and HF to form the metallacycles CpRh(PMe3)(κ2-C,C-CH2N(CH3)C5NF3) (4) and CpRh(PMe3)(κ2-C,C-CH2OC5NF3) (5), respectively. The X-ray structure of 4 shows a planar RhCCNC-five-membered ring. Complexes 2-5 may also be formed by thermal reaction of CpRh(PMe3)(Ph)H with the respective pyridines at 50 °C.
