Abstract
Liquid crystals are among us, in living organisms and in electronic devices, and they have contributed to the development of our modern society. Traditionally developed by organic chemists, the field of liquid-crystalline materials is now involving chemists and physicists of all domains (computational, physical, inorganic, supramolecular, electro-chemistry, polymers, materials, etc.,). Such diversity in researchers confirms that the field remains highly active and that new applications can be foreseen in the future. In this review, liquid-crystalline materials developed around coordination complexes are presented, focusing on those showing thermotropic behavior, a relatively unexplored family of compounds.

Abstract
Functionalization of 1,4-di(4-pyridinyl)benzene with poly(arylester) dendrimers bearing cyanobiphenyl end-groups gives a bidentate dendromesogenic ligand (L) that exhibits thermotropic liquid-crystalline properties. Combination of the diruthenium complex [Ru2(p-cymene)2(donq)][DDS]2 (M) with L, by coordination-driven self-assembly, affords the discrete and well-defined metallacycle M2L2. Like L, this supramolecular dendritic system displays mesomorphic properties above 50 °C. Both compounds L and M2L2 show smectic phases, characterized by a multilayered organization of the multiple components.

Kineticomechanistic Study of the Redox pH Cycling Processes Occurring on a Robust Water-Soluble Cyanido-Bridged Mixed-Valence {Co III/Fe II} 2 Square. Inorg Chem 2018; 57:8465-8475. Abstract
A kineticomechanistic study of reversible electron-transfer processes undergone by the water-soluble, cyanido-bridged mixed-valence [{CoIII{(Me)2(μ-ET)cyclen}}2{(μ-NC)2FeII(CN)4}2]2- square has been carried out. The oxidation reaction consists of a two-step process with the participation of a solvent-assisted outer-sphere complex, as a result of the establishment of hydrogen bonds that involve the oxo groups of the oxidant (peroxodisulfate) and the terminal cyanido ligands of the tetrametallic square. The formally endergonic reduction reaction of the fully oxidized ([{CoIII{(Me)2(μ-ET)cyclen}}2{(μ-NC)2FeIII(CN)4}2]) core by water, producing hydrogen peroxide from water even at low pH values, is also a two-step process. Each one of these processes requires a set of two preequilibria involving the association of OH- and its subsequent deprotonation by a further OH- anion. The structure of the square compound in its fully protonated form has also been determined by X-ray diffraction and shows the existence of strong hydrogen-bonding interactions, in agreement with the rather high basicity of the terminal cyanido ligands. Likewise, density functional theory calculations on the tetrametallic complex showed zones with negative electrostatic potential around the FeII centers of the square that would account for the establishment of the hydrogen bonds found in the solid state. Spectroelectrochemistry experiments demonstrated the singular stability of the {CoIII/FeII}22- complex, as well as that of their partially, {Co2III/FeIIIFeII}-, and fully, {CoIII/FeIII}2, oxidized counterparts because no hysteresis was observed in these measurements.

Abstract
Four new palladium metal supramolecules with triangular/square architectures derived from boron dipyrromethane (BODIPY) ligands were synthesized by self-assembly and fully characterized by 1H and 31P NMR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These supramolecules were more cytotoxic to brain cancer (glioblastoma) cells than to normal lung fibroblasts. Their cytotoxicity to the glioblastoma cells was higher than that of a benchmark metal-based chemotherapy drug, cisplatin. The characteristic green fluorescence of the BODIPY ligands in these supramolecules permitted their intracellular visualization using confocal microscopy, and the compounds were localized in the cytoplasm and on the plasma membrane.

Abstract
Wide-angle X-ray scattering experiments and all-atomistic molecular dynamics calculations were performed to elucidate the detailed structure of bilayer vesicles constructed by self-assembly of an amphiphilic palladium NCN-pincer complex. We found an excellent agreement between the experimental and calculated X-ray spectra, and between the membrane thickness determined from a TEM image and that calculated from an electron-density profile, which indicated that the calculated structure was highly reliable. The analysis of the simulated bilayer structure showed that in general the membrane was softer than other phospholipid bilayer membranes. In this bilayer assemblage, the degree of alignment of complex molecules in the bilayer membrane was quite low. An analysis of the electron-density profile shows that the bilayer assemblage contains a space through which organic molecules can exit. Furthermore, the catalytically active center is near this space and is easily accessible by organic molecules, which permits the bilayer membrane to act as a nanoreactor. The free energy of permeation of water through the bilayer membrane of the amphiphilic complex was 12 kJ mol-1 , which is much lower than that for phospholipid bilayer membranes in general. Organic molecules are expected to pass though the bilayer membrane. The self-assembled vesicles were shown to be catalytically active in a Miyaura-Michael reaction in water.

Abstract
Two new tetracationic hetero-bimetallacycles, compounds 4 and 5, have been constructed from an N,N'-bis(4-(pyridin-4-ylethynyl)phenyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide ligand (1), and cis-blocked complexes [M(dppf)(OTf)2 ] (dppf=1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene; OTf=trifluoromethanesulfonate; M=Pd (2), Pt (3)) in CH3 NO2 /CH2 Cl2 (1:1) solvent. Both complexes were isolated with adequate yields as triflate salts and were then characterized using (1) H, (13) C, and (31) P NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and high-resolution electrospray mass spectrometry (HR-ESMS). The molecular structure of 4 was determined by molecular mechanics force-field calculations. The cytotoxic effect of both new complexes were analyzed against T98G (brain tumor), KB (head and neck cancer), SNU-80 (thyroid cancer), and HEK-293 non-malignant cell lines. The cytotoxicity of complexes 4 and 5 were found to be considerably more effective against cancer cells than reference drug cisplatin. Annexin-V/PI staining, caspase-3/7 activity, and the reduction in mitochondrial membrane potential justify a significant level of apoptosis in complex-treated cells.

Abstract
A series of dinuclear pyridine-4-thiolate (4-Spy)-bridged rhodium and iridium compounds [M(μ-4-Spy)(diolef)]2 [diolef = 1,5-cyclooctadiene (cod), M = Rh (1), Ir (2); diolef = 2,5-norbornadiene (nbd), M = Rh (3)] were prepared by the reaction of Li(4-Spy) with the appropriate compound [M(μ-Cl)(diolef)]2 (M = Rh, Ir). The dinuclear compound [Rh(μ-4-Spy)(CO)(PPh3)]2 (4) was obtained by the reaction of [Rh(acac)(CO)(PPh3)] (acac = acetylacetonate) with 4-pySH. Compounds 1-4 were assessed as metalloligands in self-assembly reactions with the cis-blocked acceptors [M(cod)(NCCH3)2](BF4) [M = Rh (a), Ir (b)] and [M(H2O)2(dppp)](OTf)2 [M = Pd (c), Pt (d); dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane]. The homometallic hexanuclear metallomacrocycles [{M2(μ-4-Spy)2(cod)2}2{M(cod)}2](BF4)2 (M = Rh [(1a)2], Ir [(2b)2]) and the heterometallic hexanuclear metallomacrocycles [{Rh2(μ-4-Spy)2(cod)2}2{Ir(cod)}2](BF4)2 [(1b)2], [{Rh2(μ-4-Spy)2(cod)2}2{M'(dppp)}2](OTf)4 (M' = Pd [(1c)2], Pt [(1d)2]), and [{Ir2(μ-4-Spy)2(cod)2}2{M'(dppp)}2](OTf)4 (M' = Pd [(2c)2], Pt [(2d)2]) were obtained. NMR spectroscopy in combination with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was used to elucidate the nature of the metalloligands and their respective supramolecular assemblies. Most of the synthesized species were found to be nonrigid in solution, and their fluxional behavior was studied by variable-temperature (1)H NMR spectroscopy. An X-ray diffraction study of the assemblies (1a)2 and (1d)2 revealed the formation of rectangular (9.6 Å × 6.6 Å) hexanuclear metallomacrocycles with alternating dinuclear (Rh2) and mononuclear (Rh or Pt) corners. The hexanuclear core is supported by four pyridine-4-thiolate linkers, which are bonded through the thiolate moieties to the dinuclear rhodium units, exhibiting a bent-anti arrangement, and through the peripheral pyridinic nitrogen atoms to the mononuclear corners.

Abstract
Structural control among hexagonal (trimer), rhomboidal (dimer), and infinite-chain supramolecular complexes with three different supporting ligands of ethylenediamine (en), N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (en*), and 1,2-bis(diphenyl)phosphinoethane (dppe) [(en)Pd(L)]3(OTf)6 1t·OTf, [(en*)Pd(L)]2(PF6)4 2d·PF6, and [(dppe)Pd(L)(OTf)2]∞ 3·OTf (OTf = trifluoromethane sulfonate; L = 1,3-bis(4-pyridylethynyl)benzene) in the solid and solution states was investigated. The encapsulation of a large Keggin-type polyoxometalate [α-PW12O40](3-) by these complexes was also examined. As the steric bulkiness of the supporting ligands increased in the order of en < en* < dppe, the hexagonal, rhomboidal, and infinite-chain structures were obtained, as confirmed by X-ray crystallography. In solution, equilibrium between the molecular hexagon (1t·OTf/2t·PF6) and the molecular rhomboid (1d·OTf/2d·PF6) was observed in the en/en* ligand systems, whereas 3·OTf with the dppe ligand did not exhibit equilibrium and instead existed as a single species. These phenomena were established by cold-spray ionization mass spectroscopy (CSI-MS) and (1)H diffusion ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY). The addition of the highly negatively charged Keggin-type phosphododecatungstate [α-PW12O40](3-) to a solution of 2t/2d·PF6 resulted in the encapsulation of the tungstate species in the cavity of the molecular hexagon to form {[(en*)Pd(L)]3[⊃α-PW12O40]}(PF6)3 2t·[α-PW12O40](3-), as confirmed by a combination of (1)H and (31)P DOSY and CSI-MS spectral data.

Glycan-protein interactions are of utmost importance in several biological phenomena. Although the variety of carbohydrate residues in mammalian cells is limited to less than a dozen different sugars, their spatial topographical presentation in what is now associated as the "glycocodes" provides the fundamental keys for specific and high affinity "lock-in" recognition events associated with a wide range of pathologies. Toward deciphering our understanding of these glycocodes, chemists have developed new creative tools that included dendrimer chemistry in order to provide monodisperse multivalent glycoconjugates. This review provides a survey of the numerous aromatic architectures generated for the multivalent presentation of relevant carbohydrates using covalent attachment or supramolecular self-assemblies. The basic concepts toward their controlled syntheses will be described using modern synthetic procedures with a particular emphasis on powerful organometallic methodologies. The large variety of dendritic aromatic scaffolds, together with a brief survey of their unique biophysical and biological properties will be critically reviewed. The distinctiveness of the resulting multivalent glycoarchitectures, encompassing glycoclusters, glycodendrimers and molecularly defined self-assemblies, in forming well organized cross-linked lattices with multivalent carbohydrate binding proteins (lectins) together with their photophysical, medical, and imaging properties will also be briefly highlighted. The topic will be presented in increasing order of aromatic backbone complexities and will end with fullerenes together with self-assembled nanostructures, thus complementing the various scaffolds described in this special thematic issue dedicated to multivalent glycoscience.

Abstract
Many naturally occurring systems show us how multi-component supramolecular assemblies can generate useful functional behaviour. In this article the problems and limitations associated with achieving such behaviour in artificial multi-component assemblies is discussed, together with two examples of functions in artificial supramolecular assemblies based on (i) host-guest chemistry in cavities of cages, and (ii) light-harvesting in multi-chromophore arrays. Important challenges for the future are summarised.
