Abstract
Lycorane is a pentacyclic core presented in alkaloids isolated from the Amaryllidaceae family of herbaceous flowering plants. Members of this class of natural products have shown to display important biological properties including analgesic, antiviral, and antiproliferative activities. This review presents the known synthetic routes toward α-, β-, γ-, and δ-lycoranes. α-(19 routes), β-(10 routes), γ-(38 routes), and δ-(6 routes).

Abstract
Glycals and their [2,3]-dehydrosugar derivatives have commonly been used in synthetic chemistry as electrophiles. Here we report a Pd-catalyzed polar inversion (umpolung) of this reaction, where the glycals and isomers can be used as nucleophiles. The reaction showed high regio- and stereoselectivity in the presence of numerous aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes. The synthetic utility of this reaction was demonstrated by the short synthesis of the tetrahydropyran fragment of the anticancer natural product mucocin.

Abstract
π-Allylpalladium complexes can not only serve as electrophilic allylating agents for a broad range of nucleophiles, but also nucleophilic allylating agents for electrophiles depending on their electronic environments. In contrast to these typical reactivities of π-allylpalladium complexes, silylated and borylated π-allylpalladium species show unique reactivities that can allow versatile transformations in addition to simple allylation. Herein, four different types of transformations that are in principle achieved via the inherently reactive silylated and borylated π-allylpalladium species as common intermediates are described. An appropriate selection of ligands of the silylated and borylated π-allylpalladium species can allow control over the reaction pathways.

Abstract
A protecting-group-free synthesis of two endoperoxide natural products, plakortolide E and plakortolide I, is reported. Key steps are a vanadium-mediated epoxidation, an iron-catalyzed allylic substitution, and a cobalt-induced endoperoxide formation. Our approach combines chemoselective bond-forming reactions and one-pot operations to forge an overall efficient synthesis.

Abstract
After seminal Tsuji-Trost reactions (palladium catalyzed allylation of nucleophiles via π-allyl intermediates as electrophiles), the idea of reversal reactivity of π-allyl intermediates (i.e. π-allyl as nucleophiles) has been stated since the eighties. Thanks to different transition metal sources and the modification of their electronic environment through the use of additives and ligands, such 'reactivity switch' of π-allyl intermediates proved its powerfulness allowing high control in regio-, diastereo- and enantio-selectivities. These methodologies have thus emerged as efficient methods in the catalytic enantioselective allylation of carbonyl compounds and imines with a deep impact on natural product and/or drug elaboration. This tutorial review highlights the concept of 'umpoled' reactivity of π-allyl intermediates, relying on selected recent examples.

Abstract
The generation of cyclopent-2-enylzinc from cyclopentadiene based on a titanium-catalyzed hydroalumination/transmetallation sequence is described. Applied to the allylmetallation of phenylglycinol-derived imines, this sequence leads to homoallylic amines with moderate to good stereoselectivities. The synthesis of disubstituted azetidines and piperidines illustrates the potential of the method.

Abstract
A serendipitously discovered palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation reaction with diorganozinc reagents, which displays broad functional group compatibility, is reported. This novel transformation hinges on a remarkable ligand effect which overrides the standard "umpolung" reactivity of allyl-palladium intermediates in the presence of dialkylzincs. Owing to its mild conditions, enantioselective allylic alkylations of racemic allylic electrophiles are possible in the presence of sensitive functional groups.

Abstract
The cyclometalated π-allyliridium 3,4-dinitro-C,O-benzoate complex modified by (R)- or (S)-Cl,MeO-BIPHEP promotes the transfer hydrogenative coupling of allyl acetate to β-stereogenic alcohols with good to excellent levels of catalyst-directed diastereoselectivity to furnish homoallylic alcohols. Remote electronic effects of the C,O-benzoate of the catalyst play a critical role in suppressing epimerization of the transient α-stereogenic aldehyde.

Abstract
The complexity of the transmetalation step in a Pd-catalyzed Negishi reaction has been investigated by combining experiment and theoretical calculations. The reaction between trans-[PdMeCl(PMePh(2))(2)] and ZnMe(2) in THF as solvent was analyzed. The results reveal some unexpected and relevant mechanistic aspects not observed for ZnMeCl as nucleophile. The operative reaction mechanism is not the same when the reaction is carried out in the presence or in the absence of an excess of phosphine in the medium. In the absence of added phosphine an ionic intermediate with THF as ligand ([PdMe(PMePh(2))(2)(THF)](+)) opens ionic transmetalation pathways. In contrast, an excess of phosphine retards the reaction because of the formation of a very stable cationic complex with three phosphines ([PdMe(PMePh(2))(3)](+)) that sequesters the catalyst. These ionic intermediates had never been observed or proposed in palladium Negishi systems and warn on the possible detrimental effect of an excess of good ligand (as PMePh(2)) for the process. In contrast, the ionic pathways via cationic complexes with one solvent (or a weak ligand) can be noticeably faster and provide a more rapid reaction than the concerted pathways via neutral intermediates. Theoretical calculations on the real molecules reproduce well the experimental rate trends observed for the different mechanistic pathways.

Abstract
The formation of C-C bonds via catalytic hydrogenation and transfer hydrogenation enables carbonyl and imine addition in the absence of stoichiometric organometallic reagents. In this review, iridium-catalyzed C-C bond-forming hydrogenations and transfer hydrogenations are surveyed. These processes encompass selective, atom-economic methods for the vinylation and allylation of carbonyl compounds and imines. Notably, under transfer hydrogenation conditions, alcohol dehydrogenation drives reductive generation of organoiridium nucleophiles, enabling carbonyl addition from the aldehyde or alcohol oxidation level. In the latter case, hydrogen exchange between alcohols and π-unsaturated reactants generates electrophile-nucleophile pairs en route to products of hydro-hydroxyalkylation, representing a direct method for the functionalization of carbinol C-H bonds.

Abstract
Asymmetric catalysis with transition-metal complexes is the basis for a vast array of stereoselective transformations and has changed the face of modern synthetic chemistry. Key to this success has been the design of chiral ligands to control the regio-, diastereo-, and enantioselectivity. Phosphoramidites have emerged as a highly versatile and readily accessible class of chiral ligands. Their modular structure enables the formation of ligand libraries and easy fine-tuning for a specific catalytic reaction. Phosphoramidites frequently show exceptional levels of stereocontrol, and their monodentate nature is essential in combinatorial catalysis, where a ligand-mixture approach is used. In this Review, recent developments in asymmetric catalysis with phosphoramidites used as ligands are discussed, with a focus on the formation of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds.
