Abstract
Imidazolium salts have ubiquitous applications in energy research, catalysis, materials and medicinal sciences. Here, we report a new strategy for the synthesis of diverse heteroatom-functionalized imidazolium and imidazolinium salts from easily available 1,4-diaza-1,3-butadienes in one step. The strategy relies on a discovered family of unprecedented nucleophilic addition/cyclization reactions with trialkyl orthoformates and heteroatomic nucleophiles. To probe general areas of application, synthesized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) precursors were feasible for direct metallation to give functionalized M/carbene complexes (M = Pd, Ni, Cu, Ag, Au), which were isolated in individual form. The utility of chloromethyl function for the postmodification of the synthesized salts and Pd/carbene complexes was demonstrated. The obtained complexes and imidazolium salts demonstrated good activities in Pd- or Ni-catalyzed model cross-coupling and C-H activation reactions.

Abstract
The reaction of amidinatosilylene LSi(:)Cl [L = PhC(NtBu)2] with N-heterocyclic carbene IAr [:C{N(Ar)CH}2, where Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3] and NaOTf in tetrahydrofuran (THF) facilely afforded a silicon(II) cation [LSi(:)-aIAr]+OTf- (1+OTf-), where IAr isomerizes to abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene aIAr, coordinating to the silicon(II) center. Its Ge homologue, [LGe(:)-aIAr]+OTf- (2+OTf-), was also accessed via the same protocol. For the formation of 1+, we propose that an in situ-generated Si(II) cation [LSi(:)]+ under the treatment of LSi(:)Cl with NaOTf may isomerize IAr in THF. In contrast, the replacement of IAr with cyclic alkyl(amino) carbene (cAAC) furnished a cAAC-silanyl radical ion [LSi(H)-cAAC]•+(LiOTf2)- [3•+(LiOTf2)-], which may undergo an abstraction of the H radical from THF. All of the products were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and X-ray crystallography, and their bonding scenarios were investigated by density functional theory calculations. These studies provide new perspective on carbene-silicon chemistry.

Abstract
The addition reactions of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are mostly known to occur through the carbenic centre (C2), which leads to a "normal" adduct. Herein, we report the "abnormal" addition of NHCDip 1 (1,3-(2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 )-imidazole-2-ylidene) to a conjugate acid of cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene 2 (CAACiPr =1-iPr-3,3,5,5-Me4 -pyrrolinium triflate). Mechanistic study revealed that this reaction proceeded through the in situ formation of 1,3-(2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 )-imidazolium cation 4 and N-iPr-substituted CAAC 5 followed by the oxidative addition of compound 5 across the C4-H bond (alias backbone C-H) of compound 4. The in situ formation of compound 5 was also proven by the oxidative addition of it to the N-H group of iPrNH2 . DFT calculations also supported the mechanistic findings. A different methodology for the in situ generation of compound 5 by using TMPLi is also described.

Abstract
The thiophosphinidene complex [Mo2Cp2(μ-κ(2):κ(1),η(6)-SPMes*)(CO)2] (Mes* = 2,4,6-C6H2(t)Bu3) reacted with [Co2(CO)8] at room temperature or below to give several of the following phosphinidene-bridged products, depending on reaction conditions: the MoCo complexes [CoMoCp(μ-κ(1):κ(1),η(6)-PMes*)(CO)3] and [CoMoCp(μ-PMes*)(CO)5] (Co-Mo = 2.972(1) Å), the MoCo3 cluster [Co3MoCp(μ3-PMes*)(CO)9] (Co-Mo = 2.664(1), 2.810(1) Å), and the sulphido-bridged tetranuclear complexes [Co2Mo2Cp2(μ-κ(1):κ(1):κ(1),η(4)-PMes*)(μ3-S)(CO)7] and [Co3MoCp(μ-κ(1):κ(1):κ(1),η(4)-PMes*)(μ3-S)(CO)8]. In contrast, the thiophosphinidene complex [Mo2Cp2(μ-κ(2):κ(1),η(4)-SPMes*)(CO)3] reacted with the same cobalt reagent selectively to give the above Mo2Co2 complex in very high yield. The latter could be decarbonylated photochemically to give [Co2Mo2Cp2(μ-κ(1):κ(1):κ(1),η(6)-PMes*)(μ3-S)(CO)6] (Co-Co = 2.435(3), Co-Mo = 2.769(2), 2.798(2) Å), after an η(4)- to η(6)-haptotropic rearrangement of the aryl ring of the phosphinidene ligand that could be reversed upon reaction with CO. The related complex [Mo2Cp2(μ-κ(2):κ(1),η(4)-SPMes*)(CO)2(CN(t)Bu)], however, displayed poor selectivity towards the cobalt dimer and yielded a mixture of CoMo complexes [CoMoCp(μ-PMes*)(CO)5] and [CoMoCp(μ-PMes*)(CO)3(CN(t)Bu)2], and the tetranuclear sulphido-bridged ones [Co2Mo2Cp2(μ-κ(1):κ(1):κ(1),η(4)-PMes*)(μ3-S)(CO)6(CN(t)Bu)] (Co-Co = 2.533(1), Co-Mo = 2.7485(9), 2.770(1) Å) and [Co3MoCp(μ-κ(1):κ(1):κ(1),η(4)-PMes*)(μ3-S)(CO)7(CN(t)Bu)] (Co-Co = 2.4120(7) to 2.5817(7) Å). This reduction in selectivity might have an electronic origin rather than a steric origin, since the related but cationic substrate [Mo2Cp2{μ-κ(2):κ(1),η(5)-SP(C6H3(t)Bu3)}(CO)2(CN(t)Bu)]BAr [Ar' = 3,5-C6H3(CF3)2] reacted with [Co2(CO)8] more selectively to give the sulphido-bridged Co2Mo2 complex [Co2Mo2Cp2{μ-κ(1):κ(1):κ(1),η(5)-P(C6H3(t)Bu3)}(μ3-S)(CO)6(CN(t)Bu)]BAr, along with small amounts of the Co3Mo complex [Co3MoCp{μ-κ(1):κ(1):κ(1),η(5)-P(C6H3(t)Bu3)}(μ3-S)(CO)7(CN(t)Bu)]BAr (Co-Co = 2.414(2) to 2.560(2) Å). The structure of the new complexes was analyzed on the basis of the corresponding X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic data, and likely reaction pathways were discussed on the basis of the above results and some additional experiments.

Abstract
In the presence of stoichiometric or catalytic amounts of [M{N(SiMe3 )2 }2 ] (M=Fe, Co), N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) react with primary phosphines to give a series of carbene phosphinidenes of the type (NHC)⋅PAr. The formation of (IMe4 )⋅PMes (Mes=mesityl) is also catalyzed by the phosphinidene-bridged complex [(IMe4 )2 Fe(μ-PMes)]2 , which provides evidence for metal-catalyzed phosphinidene transfer.

Abstract
Advancing the rational design of main-group N-heterocyclic carbene complexes, this study reports the synthesis, X-ray crystallographic and NMR spectroscopic characterisation of a novel series of Ga complexes containing neutral or anionic NHC ligands using the unsaturated carbene IPr (IPr = 1,3-bis-(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene). Starting from normal adduct GaR3·IPr (1) (R = CH2SiMe3), the addition of polar LiR led to the formation of NHC-stabilised gallate species IPr·LiGaR4 (2), resulting from co-complexation of the single-metal species. Contrastingly, reversing the order of addition of these organometallic reagents, by treating unsaturated free IPr, first with LiR followed by GaR3, furnished novel heteroleptic gallate (THF)2Li[:C{[N(2,6-iPr2C6H3)]2CHCGa(CH2SiMe3)3}] (3), which contains an anionic NHC ligand acting as an unsymmetrical bridge between the two metals, coordinating through its abnormal C4 position to Ga and through its normal C2 position to Li. Electrophilic interception studies of 3 using methyl triflate (MeOTf), methanol and imidazolium salt (IMes·HCl) led to the isolation and structural elucidation of the two novel neutral abnormal NHC (aNHC) complexes [CH3C{[N(2,6-iPr2C6H3)]2CHCGa(CH2SiMe3)3}] (4) and aIPr·GaR3 (5) (aIPr = HC{[N(2,6-iPr2C6H3)]2CHC}). These studies disclose the preference of the anionic IPr ligand present in 3 to react with electrophiles via its C2 position, leaving its Ga-C4 bond intact. Abnormal complex 5 can also be accessed by a thermally induced rearrangement of its normal isomer 1. Combining NMR spectroscopic and kinetic studies with DFT calculations, new light has been shed on this intriguing transformation, which suggests that it occurs via a dissociative mechanism, highlighting the importance of the donor ability of the solvent used in these thermal isomerizations as well as the steric bulk of the substituents on the NHC and the Ga reagent. These findings intimate that relief of the steric hindrance around Ga by forming an abnormal complex is a key driving force behind these rearrangements.

Abstract
Using the nucleophilicity of NHCs and aNHCs, as well as the leaving group ability of the former, the carbon-carbon double bond of imidazol-2-ylidenes can be readily mono- and difunctionalized. These results provide also a new light on the formation of abnormal carbene adducts from classical unsaturated NHCs.
