Abstract
This study explores the intricate coordination chemistry of sodium aminophenolate species and their significant role in the depolymerization of polylactide (PLA), offering novel insights into catalytic degradation processes. By examining sodium coordination entities, including dimers and larger aggregates such as tetramers, we reveal how structural modifications, particularly the manipulation of steric hindrances, influence the formation and stability of these complexes. The dimers, characterized by a unique four-center core (Na-O-Na-O), serve as a foundational motif, which is further elaborated to obtain complexes with varied coordination environments through strategic ligand design. Our research delves into the lability of the amino arm in these complexes, a critical factor that facilitates the coordination of PLA to the sodium center, thereby initiating the depolymerization process. Moreover, DFT studies have been pivotal in identifying the most energetically favorable structures for catalysis, highlighting a distinct preference for an eight-membered ring motif stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonds. This motif not only enhances the catalyst's efficiency but also introduces a novel structural paradigm for sodium-based catalysis in PLA degradation. Experimental validation of the theoretical models was achieved through NMR spectroscopy, which confirmed the formation of the active catalyst forms and monitored the progress of PLA degradation. The study presents a comprehensive analysis of the influence of ligand structure on the catalytic activity, underscoring the importance of the eight-membered ring motif. Furthermore, we demonstrate how varying the steric bulk of substituents on the amino arm affects the catalyst's performance, with benzyl-substituted ligands exhibiting superior activity. Our findings offer a profound understanding of the structural factors governing the catalytic efficiency of sodium aminophenolate complexes in PLA degradation. This research not only advances the field of coordination chemistry but also presents a promising avenue for the development of efficient and environmentally friendly catalysts for polymer degradation.

Abstract
Polylactide (PLA), a biocompatible and biodegradable polymer, is widely used in diverse biomedical applications. However, the industry standard for converting lactide into PLA involves toxic tin (Sn)-based catalysts. To mitigate the use of these harmful catalysts, other environmentally benign metal-containing agents for efficient lactide polymerization have been studied, but these alternatives are hindered by complex synthesis processes, reactivity issues, and selectivity limitations. To overcome these shortcomings, we explored the catalytic activity of Cu-(Phe)2 and Zn-(Phe)2 metal-amino acid co-assemblies as potential catalysts of the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactide into PLA. Catalytic activity of the assemblies was monitored at different temperatures and solvents using 1H-NMR spectroscopy to determine the catalytic parameters. Notably, Zn-(Phe)2 achieved >99% conversion of lactide to PLA within 12 h in toluene under reflux conditions and was found to have first-order kinetics, whereas Cu-(Phe)2 exhibited significantly lower catalytic activity. Following Zn-(Phe)2-mediated catalysis, the resulting PLA had an average molecular weight of 128 kDa and a dispersity index of 1.25 as determined by gel permeation chromatography. Taken together, our minimalistic approach expands the realm of metal-amino acid-based supramolecular catalytic nanomaterials useful in the ROP of lactide. This advancement shows promise for the future design of simplified biocatalysts in both industrial and biomedical applications.

Abstract
New homoleptic zinc and magnesium complexes containing constrained reduced Schiff base ligands based on substituted 7-hydroxy-1-indanone were successfully synthesized and used as a catalyst for the polymerization of lactide. The ligands contain a side arm having different basicity because dimethylamino, pyridyl, and furfuryl groups are shown to greatly affect the polymerization rates. The homoleptic zinc complex containing constrained reduced Schiff base ligands and a dimethylamino side arm was highly active, giving a 92% conversion of l-lactide in 3 min using [LA]:[Zn]:[BnOH] = 500:1:2 at room temperature. The polymerization is pseudo-first-order dependent on the LA concentration. Well-controlled and living behavior of the zinc complex was observed and demonstrated in the preparation of stereodiblock and triblock copolymers of l-, d-, and rac-lactide in a one-pot sequential synthesis with a predictable block length, block sequence, and narrow dispersity rapidly in 10 min. Stereocomplex formation was observed for PLA made sequentially from 100 l-LA, 100 rac-LA, and 100 d-LA having a high Tm of up to 220 °C.

Abstract
An efficient synthesis strategy of a well-defined polylactide-dye conjugate in a controlled fashion is presented. The introduction of coloring species as end groups of polylactide (PLA) has been performed by using new homoleptic aminophenolate magnesium or zinc coordination compounds. The molecular structure of metal complexes has been determined in solution by NMR spectroscopy, and in the solid state by X-ray analysis. Lastingly colored polymers were obtained with 2-[4-(Nitrophenylazo)-N-ethylphenylamino]ethanol (Disperse Red 1) and 2-[4-(2-Chloro-4-nitrophenylazo)-N-ethylphenylamino]ethanol (Disperse Red 13) at very high lactide conversions, based on MALDI-ToF measurement, and the macromolecules were nearly fully chain end dye-functionalized. Based on 1H NMR, the DPn of conjugates was in the range of 10-300, which was consistent with the reaction setup. Various methods of gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis were applied, and they demonstrated that the number-average molar mass (Mn) values (polystyrene (PS) standards) were a bit higher than calculated, the molar mass distribution index (ƉM) values were moderate to high, the TDA (triple detection array) system was inappropriate for analysis, measurements with PDA (photo diode array) detection at 470 nm gave nearly the same molar mass distributions such as the refractometer, and the relative absorbance of conjugates at 470 nm increased linearly versus (DPn)-1. The presented approach connects the gap between the current strategy of obtaining colored polymer fibers and the design of tailor-made initiators with eco polyesters designed for the targeted applications.

Abstract
The reaction of MgBu2 and ZnEt2 or Zn{N[Si(CH3)3]2}2 with a tridentate monoanionic pyrrolylpyridiylimino [N-,N,N] proligand gave homoleptic species, as exclusive products, in high yields. The complexes were characterized in solution by 1D and 2D NMR analysis and by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The new homoleptic complexes were tested as initiators in the polymerization of ε-caprolactone and lactide in the presence of an exogenous alcohol. For both complexes, the polymerizations proceed via an "activated monomer" mechanism that, in the case of the magnesium complex, was correlated with the coordinative flexibility of the ligands, resulting in extremely high productivities under mild conditions.

Abstract
New heteroleptic zinc dimeric complexes bearing an aminophenolate ligand of a single-site initiator framework were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods, X-ray analysis, and DFT calculations. The theoretical study, verified by the experimental data, explains the catalytic behaviour in the ROP of lactide in the examined zinc complexes. The presented simple DFT protocol constitutes a valuable method for the qualification of the ancillary ligand to rationally design new complexes to improve their catalytic activity.

Abstract
Magnesium compounds of tetradentate amino-bis(phenolato) ligands, Mg[L1] (1) and Mg[L2] (2) (where [L1] = 2-pyridyl-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4-methoxy-6-tert-butylphenolato), and [L2] = dimethylaminoethylamino-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenolato)) were prepared. The proligands, H2[L1] and H2[L2] were reacted with di(n-butyl)magnesium in toluene to give the desired compounds in high yields. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit dimeric structures in solutions of non-coordinating solvents as observed by NMR spectroscopy and in the solid state as shown by the single crystal X-ray structure of 2. These compounds exhibit good activity for rac-lactide polymerization in solution and in molten lactide.

Abstract
A series of asymmetric heterodimeric zinc complexes have been synthesized in a direct reaction between conformationally flexible chiral/achiral homodimers. The cooperative activity of steric factors and coordination codes resulted in an intriguing chiral self-sorting process. Herein, we are reporting our recent exploration of the first example of such a type of reaction.

Abstract
Eight bis-ligated, homoleptic, zinc complexes were synthesized through the reaction of NNO Schiff base ketoimines bearing varying substituents with diethyl zinc in an inert atmosphere glovebox at room temperature and isolated in 62-95% yield. The complexes were characterized with (1)H, (13)C, and (19)F nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, absorbance spectroscopy, high resolution mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The complexes were shown to adopt distorted octahedral coordination geometry around zinc. The (1)H and (19)F NMR spectra of complexes 1-7 showed stable zinc coordination at 300 K while the effect of steric encumbrance and two trifluoromethyl groups in complex 8 was investigated with variable temperature NMR. The bis-ligated zinc complexes were effective initiators for the ring opening polymerization of L-lactide into poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). With [L-lac]/[Zn complex] = 50, the bis-ligated zinc complexes yielded percentage conversion of 14-98% with polymerization times varying from 15-1440 min, where the longest reaction times were required when two trifluoromethyl groups were present. The addition of 4-fluorophenol co-catalyst resulted in up to a 5-fold increase in the percentage conversion in toluene solution and up to a 14-fold increase in bulk melt polymerization with reductions in the poly-dispersity index values for the isolated PLLA. Addition of 4-fluorophenol to complex 1 was studied with (1)H and (19)F NMR and appeared to yield an in situ generated zinc alkoxide complex.

Abstract
The development of sustainable routes to fine chemicals, liquid fuels, and polymeric materials from natural resources has attracted significant attention from academia, industry, the general public, and governments owing to dwindling fossil resources, surging energy demand, global warming concerns, and other environmental problems. Cellulosic material, such as grasses, trees, corn stover, or wheat straw, is the most abundant nonfood renewable biomass resources on earth. Such annually renewable material can potentially meet our future needs with a low carbon footprint if it can be efficiently converted into fuels, value added chemicals, or polymeric materials. This chapter focuses on various renewable monomers derived directly from cellulose or cellulose platforms and corresponding sustainable polymers or copolymers produced therefrom. Recent advances related to the polymerization processes and the properties of novel biomass-derived polymers are also reviewed and discussed.

Abstract
Several monometallic {LO(i)}M complexes of lithium (M = Li; i = 1 (1), 2 (2), 3 (3)) or potassium (M = K, i = 3 (4)) and the heteroleptic bimetallic lithium complex {LO(3)}Li·LiN(SiMe2H)2 (5), all supported by monoanionic aminoether-phenolate {LO(i)}(-) (i = 1-3) ligands, have been synthesized and structurally characterized. A large range of coordination motifs is represented in the solid state, depending on the chelating ability of the ligand, the size of the metal and the number of metallic centres found in the complex. Pulse-gradient spin-echo NMR showed that 1-4 are monomeric in solution, irrespective of their (mono- or di)nuclearity in the solid-state. VT (7)Li and DOSY NMR measurements conducted for 5 indicated that the two Li atoms in the complex do not exchange positions even at 80 °C. Upon addition of 1-10 equiv. of BnOH, the electron-rich and sterically congested {LO(3)}Li complex (3) promotes the controlled living and immortal ring-opening polymerisation of L-lactide. The combination of polymer end-group analyses and stoichiometric model reactions unambiguously provided evidence that ROP reactions catalyzed by these two-component {LO(i)}Li/BnOH catalyst systems operate according to an activated monomer mechanism, and not via the coordination-insertion scenario frequently assumed for similar alkali phenolate-alcohol systems.

Abstract
Lithium compounds of tetradentate amino-bis(phenolato)-tetrahydrofuranyl ligands, Li(2)[L1] (1) and Li(2)[L2] (2) (where [L1] = 2-tetrahydrofuranyl-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenolate), and [L2] = 2-tetrahydrofuranyl-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4,6-tert-butylphenolate)) were characterized by multinuclear solution NMR and solid-state (6)Li and (7)Li NMR spectroscopy. The proligands, n-propylamino-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol), (H(2)[L3]) and benzylamino-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4,6-di-tert-amylphenol), H(2)[L4] were reacted with n-butyllithium in THF to give the related dilithium compounds Li(2)[L3] (4) and Li(2)[L4] (5), respectively. The pyridine adduct of 1, (py)(2)Li(2)[L1] (3) and complexes 4 and 5 have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. The reactivity of these complexes for the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide, as well as the influences of monomer concentration, monomer/Li molar ratio, polymerization temperature and time, were studied.
