Abstract
The low percentage of recyclability of the polymeric materials obtained by olefin transition metal (TM) polymerization catalysis has increased the interest in their substitution with more eco-friendly materials with reliable physical and mechanical properties. Among the variety of known biodegradable polymers, linear aliphatic polyesters produced by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters occupy a prominent position. The polymer properties are highly dependent on the macromolecule microstructure, and the control of stereoselectivity is necessary for providing materials with precise and finely tuned properties. In this review, we aim to outline the main synthetic routes, the physical properties and also the applications of three commercially available biodegradable materials: Polylactic acid (PLA), Poly(Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid) (PLGA), and Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB), all of three easily accessible via ROP. In this framework, understanding the origin of enantioselectivity and the factors that determine it is then crucial for the development of materials with suitable thermal and mechanical properties.

Abstract
Thermally tolerant polymer optical resonators are fabricated from a stereocomplex of poly(L-lactic acid) and poly(D-lactic acid) through the oil-in-water miniemulsion method. The thermal stability of the microspheres of the stereocomplex poly(lactic acid) (SC-PLA) is superior to that of the homochiral poly(lactic acid) (HC-PLA). As a result of the high thermal stability, the optical resonator properties of the SC-PLA microspheres are preserved at an elevated temperature of up to 230 °C, which is 70 °C higher than that of microspheres formed from HC-PLA.

Functionalization of Polylactide with Multiple Tetraphenyethane Inifer Groups to Form PLA Block Copolymers with Vinyl Monomers. Int J Mol Sci 2022; 24:ijms24010019. Abstract
In the present contribution, a new strategy for preparing block copolymers of polylactide (PLA), a bio-derived polymer of increasing importance, is described. The method should lead to multiblock copolymers of lactide with vinyl monomers (VM), i.e., monomers that polymerize according to different mechanisms, and is based on the introduction of multiple "inifer" (INItiator/transFER agent) groups into PLA's structure. As an "inifer" group, tetraphenylethane (TPE, known to easily thermally dissociate to radicals) was incorporated into PLA chains using diisocyanate. PLA that contained TPE groups (PLA-PU) was characterized, and its ability to form initiating radicals was demonstrated by ESR measurements. PLA-PU was used as a "macroinifer" for the polymerization of acrylonitrile and styrene upon moderate heating (85 °C) of the PLA-PU in the presence of monomers. The formation of block copolymers PLA/PVM was confirmed by 1H NMR, DOSY NMR, and FTIR spectroscopies and the SEC method. The prepared copolymers showed only one glass transition in DSC curves with Tg values higher than those of PLA-PU.

Abstract
Environmental problems, such as global warming and plastic pollution have forced researchers to investigate alternatives for conventional plastics. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA), one of the well-known eco-friendly biodegradables and biobased polyesters, has been studied extensively and is considered to be a promising substitute to petroleum-based polymers. This review gives an inclusive overview of the current research of lactic acid and lactide dimer techniques along with the production of PLA from its monomers. Melt polycondensation as well as ring opening polymerization techniques are discussed, and the effect of various catalysts and polymerization conditions is thoroughly presented. Reaction mechanisms are also reviewed. However, due to the competitive decomposition reactions, in the most cases low or medium molecular weight (MW) of PLA, not exceeding 20,000-50,000 g/mol, are prepared. For this reason, additional procedures such as solid state polycondensation (SSP) and chain extension (CE) reaching MW ranging from 80,000 up to 250,000 g/mol are extensively investigated here. Lastly, numerous practical applications of PLA in various fields of industry, technical challenges and limitations of PLA use as well as its future perspectives are also reported in this review.

Abstract
Cyclic polymers display unique physicochemical and biological properties. However, their development is often limited by their challenging preparation. In this work, we present a simple route to cyclic poly(α-peptoids) from N-alkylated-N-carboxyanhydrides (NNCA) using LiHMDS promoted ring-expansion polymerization (REP) in DMF. This new method allows the unprecedented use of lysine-like monomers in REP to design bioactive macrocycles bearing pharmaceutical potential against Clostridioides difficile, a bacterium responsible for nosocomial infections.

Abstract
Aliphatic polyesters are an important class of polymeric materials for biomedical applications due to their versatile and tunable chemistry, biocompatibility and biodegradability. A capability of direct bonding with biomedically significant molecules, provided by the presence of the reactive end functional groups (FGs), is highly desirable for prospective polymers. Among FGs, N-hydroxysuccinimidyl activated ester group (NHS) and maleimide fragment (MI) provide efficient covalent bonding with -NH- and -SH containing compounds. In our study, we found that NHS- and MI-derived acyl chlorides efficiently terminate living ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone, L-lactide, ethyl ethylene phosphonate and ethyl ethylene phosphate, catalyzed by 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxy magnesium complex, with a formation of NHS- and MI-functionalized polymers at a high yields. Reactivity of these polymers towards amine- and thiol-containing model substrates in organic and aqueous media was also studied.

Abstract
The increasing awareness of sustainability has led to enormous growth of the demand for bio-based and biodegradable polymers such as poly(lactide) (PLA). In industry, polymerization of lactide is currently carried out using tin catalysts (e. g., tin(II) ethyl hexanoate, Sn(Oct)2 ). Since the catalyst remains in the polymer, it can accumulate in the soil or in the human body after degradation and cause damage due to its toxicity. Therefore, a search for a suitable substitute for this catalyst has been going on for decades. Guanidine metal complexes prove to be excellent catalysts in the polymerization of lactide. They are not only convincing because of their activity and the synthesis of high molar mass polymers, but also show a high robustness against high temperatures, oxidation as well as residual protic impurities in the monomer. Herein, key zinc and iron guanidine complexes are discussed with respect to their apparent rate constant (kapp ) and rate constant of propagation (kp ), produced molar masses and the mechanism involved.

Abstract
A bioinspired diblock copolymer was synthesized from pentadecalactone and 3-hydroxy cinnamic acid. Poly(pentadecalactone) (PPDL) with a molar mass of up to 43,000 g mol-1 was obtained by ring-opening polymerization initiated propargyl alcohol. Poly(3-hydroxy cinnamate) (P3HCA) was obtained by polycondensation and end-functionalized with 3-azido propanol. The two functionalized homopolymers were connected via 1,3-dipolar Huisgen addition to yield the block copolymer PPDL-triazole-P3HCA. The structure the block copolymer was confirmed by proton NMR, FTIR spectroscopy and GPC. By analyzing the morphology of polymer films made from the homopolymers, from a 1:1 homopolymer blend, and from the PPDL-triazole-P3HCA block copolymer, clearly distinct micro- and nanostructures were revealed. Quantitative nanomechanical measurements revealed that the block copolymer PPDL-triazole-P3HCA had a DMT modulus of 22.3 ± 2.7 MPa, which was lower than that of the PPDL homopolymer (801 ± 42 MPa), yet significantly higher than that of the P3HCA homopolymer (1.77 ± 0.63 MPa). Thermal analytics showed that the melting point of PPDL-triazole-P3HCA was similar to PPDL (89-90 °C), while it had a glass transition was similar to P3HCA (123-124 °C). Thus, the semicrystalline, potentially degradable all-polyester block copolymer PPDL-triazole-P3HCA combines the thermal properties of either homopolymer, and has an intermediate elastic modulus.

Abstract
We report here on the synthesis, characterization, degradation, and drug release of acetal-protected gluconic acid-based poly(α-hydroxy ester). This polyester was synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of O-carboxyanhydride of acetal-protected gluconic acid. The polymer undergoes hydrolytic degradation under mild acidic media, whereas minimal degradation takes place under physiological pH. Under acidic conditions, the acetal-protecting groups are hydrolyzed, resulting in a water-soluble polyester with saccharide side chains that erodes from the surface, leaving the bulk of the polymer matrix intact. At pH 3.5, zero-order kinetics was maintained for 50 days accounting for ∼75% drug release. These biodegradable, pH-responsive, sustained zero-order release kinetics of the polymer have application as drug carriers for oral drug delivery or medical implants or also for nonmedical applications.

Abstract
The synthesis of bio-based and biodegradable plastics is a hot topic in research due to growing environmental problems caused by omnipresent plastics. As a result, polylactide, which has been known for years, has seen a tremendous increase in industrial production. Nevertheless, the manufacturing process using the toxic catalyst Sn(Oct)2 is very critical. As an alternative, five zinc acetate complexes have been synthesized with Schiff base-like ligands that exhibit high activity in the ring-opening polymerization of non-purified lactide. The systems bear different side arms in the ligand scaffold. The influence of these substituents has been analyzed. For a detailed description of the catalytic activities, the rate constants k app and k p were determined using in-situ Raman spectroscopy at a temperature of 150 °C. The polymers produced have molar masses of up to 71 000 g mol-1 and are therefore suitable for a variety of applications. Toxicity measurements carried out for these complexes proved the nontoxicity of the systems.

Abstract
Non-toxic, highly active and robust complexes are the holy grail as ideal green catalysts for the polymerisation of biorenewable and biodegradable polylactide. Four new zinc guanidine complexes [ZnCl2(TMG4NMe2asme)], [ZnCl2(TMG5Clasme)], [ZnCl2(TMG5Measme)] and [ZnCl2(TMG5NMe2asme)] with different electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups on the ligand's aromatic backbone have been synthesised. Ligands are derived from low-cost commercially available compounds and have been converted by a three- or four-step synthesis process into the desired ligand in good yields. The compounds have been fully characterised and tested in the ROP of rac-LA under industrially relevant conditions. The complexes are based on the recently published structure [ZnCl2(TMGasme)] which has shown high activity in the polymerisation of lactide at 150 °C. Different substituents in the para-position of the guanidine moiety significantly increase the polymerisation rate whereas positioning substituents in the meta-position causes no change in the reaction rate. With molecular weights over 71 000 g mol-1 being achievable, the best system produces polymers for multiple industrial applications and its polymerisation rate approaches that of Sn(Oct)2. The robust systems are able to polymerise non-purified lactide. The initiation of the polymerisation is suggested to occur due to impurities in the monomer.

Abstract
Abstract The preparation, structural characterization, luminescence, and catalytic activity of three palladium(II) complexes bearing imino phenoxide ligands are reported. The X-ray studies revealed that the complexes are mononuclear with palladium centres coordinated in a square-planar coordination environment. Two of the complexes are emissive in solution at room temperature. The catalytic activities towards the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide (rac-LA) were tested. Polymers with moderate molecular weights and relatively broad dispersity (Ð) were obtained. Kinetic studies revealed that the polymerization followed first-order kinetics. Graphical abstract ![]()

Abstract
Precise structure-property relation of a biodegradable polymer (e.g., aliphatic polyester) is anticipated only if monomer units and chiral centers are arranged in a defined primary sequence as a biomacromolecule. An emerging synthetic methodology, namely segmer assembly polymerization (SAP), is introduced in this paper to reveal the latest progress in polyester synthesis. Almost any periodic polyester envisioned can be synthesized via SAP using a programed linear or cyclic monomer. In this context, the macroscopic properties of a biodegradable polymer are fundamentally determined by microstructural information through a bottom-up approach. It can be highlighted that SAP ideally combines the precision of organic synthesis and the high efficiency of a polymerization reaction. Previously reported strategies including nucleophilic displacement, polyesterification, cross-metathesis polymerization (CMP), ring-opening polymerization (ROP), ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and entropy-driven ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ED-ROMP) are critically reviewed in this paper to shed light on precision synthesis of aliphatic polyesters via SAP. Emerging yet challenging, SAP is a paradigm which reflects the convergence of organic and polymer chemistries and is also an efficient pathway to microstructural control. The current status, future challenges and promising trends in this realm are analyzed and discussed in this overview of the state-of-the-art.

Abstract
Here a zirconium amine tris(phenolate) is used as the initiator for the production of polylactide for biomedical applications, as a replacement for a tin initiator (usually tin octanoate). The ring opening polymerization (ROP) was carried out in the melt at 130°C. The zirconium-catalyzed PLA (PLA-Zr) required 30min, resulting in a polydispersity index (PDI) of 1.17, compared to 1h and PDI=1.77 for tin-catalyzed PLA (PLA-Sn). PLA-Zr and PLA-Sn supported osteosarcoma cell (MG63) culture to the same extent (cell number, morphology, extracellular matrix production and osteogenic function) until day 14 when the PLA-Zr showed increased cell number, overall extracellular matrix production and osteogenic function. To conclude, the reduction in reaction time, controllable microstructure and biologically benign nature of the zirconium amine tris(phenolate) initiator shows that it is a more effective initiator for ROP of polylactide for biomedical applications.

Abstract
A series of new trivalent rare-earth allyl-borohydride complexes with the formula [RE(BH4 )2 (C3 H5 )(thf)x ] (RE=Sc (1), x=2; RE=Y (2) and La (3), x=3) were synthesized by reaction of the corresponding rare-earth trisborohydrides [RE(BH4 )3 (thf)x ] with half an equivalent of bis(allyl)magnesium. The complexes were fully characterized by determining their X-ray structure. Similar to their previously described Nd (4) and Sm (5) analogues, these complexes display a monomeric structure with two terminal trihapto BH4 groups, one π-η3 allyl ligand, three THF molecules for complexes 2 and 3, and two THF molecules for complex 1. The catalytic behavior of complexes 1-5 toward the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of l-lactide (l-LA) and ϵ-caprolactone (ϵ-CL) was assessed. The Nd complex featured the best activity toward l-LA (turnover frequency (TOF)=1300 h-1 ) and the order was Nd>La>Sm>Y>Sc. Complexes 1-3 were found very active for the ROP of ϵ-CL (TOF=166 000 h-1 ), which is in line with the already established exceptionnally high performance of complexes 4 and 5. With both monomers, it was shown that the borohydride moiety was the preferentially initiating group, rather than the allyl one. The random copolymerization of l-LA and ϵ-CL was performed with complexes 1-5, in the absence or in the presence of benzyl alcohol as a chain-transfer agent, affording copolymers with ϵ-caprolactone up to 62 % inserted. The copolymers synthesized display a variety of microstructures, that is, blocky, random, or quasi-alternating.

Abstract
The reactivity of iron-based ring opening polymerization catalysts is compared when the catalyst is in three different oxidation states. Formally iron(i) monoalkoxide complexes 3a (p-methoxyphenoxide) and 3b (neopentoxide) supported by bis(imino)pyridine ligands were synthesized and investigated as catalysts for the ring opening polymerization and copolymerization of various monomers. For most monomers, 3a and 3b were superior catalysts compared to analogous, formally iron(ii) and iron(iii) complexes (1a/1b and 2a/2b, respectively) for the ring opening polymerization of various cyclic ester and cyclic carbonate monomers. Experimental and computational investigation into the electronic structures of 3a and 3b revealed that they are most accurately described as containing a high spin iron(ii) center that is antiferromagnetically coupled to a singly reduced bis(imino)pyridine ligand. This electronic structure leads to increased electron density near the metal center without modulating the apparent metal oxidation state, which results in superior catalytic performance for the more highly reduced 3a and 3b compared to the increasingly more oxidized complexes (i.e.1a/1b and 2a/2b, respectively) in ring opening polymerization reactions. These findings have significant ramifications for the emerging field of redox-switchable polymerization catalysis.

Abstract
A theoretical investigation of the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) mechanism of rac-lactide (LA) with an yttrium complex featuring a N-heterocyclic carbine (NHC) tethered moiety is reported. It was found that the carbonyl of lactide is attacked by N(SiMe3)2 group rather than NHC species at the chain initiation step. The polymerization selectivity was further investigated via two consecutive insertions of lactide monomer molecules. The insertion of the second monomer in different assembly modes indicated that the steric interactions between the last enchained monomer unit and the incoming monomer together with the repulsion between the incoming monomer and the ligand framework are the primary factors determining the stereoselectivity. The interaction energy between the monomer and the metal center could also play an important role in the stereocontrol.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Four new copper complexes based on bidentate imino phenoxide ligands were synthesized and characterized by IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, ESI mass spectrometry, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and electrochemistry. The crystal structures revealed that the copper(II) atoms are surrounded by phenolate oxygen and imine nitrogen atoms of two ligands in a distorted square-planar geometry. The existence of ligand-centered, as well as Cu(II)-centered quasi-reversible and reversible redox reactions are observed in the cyclic voltammetry experiments of all the complexes. All complexes are able to catalyze the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide yielding polymers with moderate molecular weights and moderately broad molecular weight distributions.
