Abstract
The selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics plays an essential role in the chemical industry for the synthesis of anilines and their derivatives, which are known as crucial fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. In this study, we demonstrate the preparation of Pd/Ti monolith catalyst containing well-isolated metallic Pd sites on Ti substrate through a simple impregnation method, showing remarkable catalytic properties in the selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics containing various functional groups. Kinetic analyses reveal an apparent activation energy of 61 kJ/mol and the kinetic isotope effect (KH2/KD2) of ~1.7 in the hydrogenation of 3-chloronitrobenzene over Pd/Ti-200 ppm catalyst, indicating the facile dissociation of dihydrogen and the subsequent efficient hydrogenation. The Pd/Ti-200 ppm catalyst also demonstrates good stability and recyclability, maintaining its performance over multiple cycles. This simple but innovative approach not only enhances the efficiency of Pd catalysts in the selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics but also offers significant potential for industrial applications in aniline production.

Abstract
The present work demonstrates a simple and sustainable method for forming azo oligomers from low-value compounds such as nitroaniline. The reductive oligomerization of 4-nitroaniline was achieved via azo bonding using nanometric Fe3O4 spheres doped with metallic nanoparticles (Cu NPs, Ag NPs, and Au NPs), which were characterized by different analytical methods. The magnetic saturation (M s) of the samples showed that they are magnetically recoverable from aqueous environments. The effective reduction of nitroaniline followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, reaching a maximum conversion of about 97%. Fe3O4-Au is the best catalyst, its a reaction rate (k Fe3O4-Au = 0.416 mM L-1 min-1) is about 20 times higher than that of bare Fe3O4 (k Fe3O4 = 0.018 mM L-1 min-1). The formation of the two main products was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), evidencing the effective oligomerization of NA through N = N azo linkage. It is consistent with the total carbon balance and the structural analysis by density functional theory (DFT)-based total energy. The first product, a six-unit azo oligomer, was formed at the beginning of the reaction through a shorter, two-unit molecule. The nitroaniline reduction is controllable and thermodynamically viable, as shown in the computational studies.

Abstract
Herein, we report an efficient and highly selective method for the reduction of aromatic, heteroaromatic and halonitro compounds using the readily available and cost-effective Ru/C as a catalyst along with unconventional CaH2 as a source of hydride. In most cases the corresponding anilines can be obtained by simple filtration without further purification. The use of 2-MeTHF and the simple operational work-up constitute a valid alternative to previous methodologies.

Abstract
Heterogeneous catalytic processes produce the majority of the fuels and chemicals in the chemical industry and have kept improving the welfare of human beings for centuries. Although most of the heterogeneous catalytic reactions occur at the gas-solid interface, numerous cases have demonstrated that the condensed water near the active site and/or the aqueous phase merging the catalysts play positive roles in enhancing the performance of heterogeneous catalysts and creating novel catalytic conversion routes. We enumerate the traditional heterogeneous catalytic reactions that enable significant rate/selectivity promotion in the aqueous phase or adsorbed micro water environment and discuss the role of water in specific systems. Some of the novel heterogeneous reactions achieved with only the assistance of the aqueous phase have been summarized. The development of reactions with the participation of the aqueous phase/water and the investigation of the role of water in the heterogeneous catalytic reactions will open new horizons for catalysts with better activity, improved selectivity, and novel processes.

Abstract
This report describes an efficient transition-metal-free process toward the transfer hydrogenative cascade reaction between nitroarenes and amines or alcohols. The developed redox-economical approach was realized using a combination of KOtBu and Et3SiH as reagents, which allows the synthesis of benzimidazole derivatives via σ-bond metathesis. The reaction conditions hold well over a wide range of substrates embedded with diverse functional groups to deliver the desired products in good to excellent yields. The mechanistic proposal has been depicted on the basis of a series of control experiments, mass spectroscopic evidence which is well supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations with a feasible energy profile.

Abstract
The transformation of aromatic nitrocompounds into amines by CO/H2O is catalyzed by palladium(II) complexes. Recently, we have proposed that the catalytic cycle includes Pd0 as the transient intermediate and herein, for the first time, we describe the application of palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) stabilized by monodentate N-heterocyclic ligands as nanocatalysts facilitating the reduction of Ar–NO2 into Ar–NH2 by CO/H2O. Among the series—Pd(II) complexes, PdNPs and commercial Pdblack—the highest catalytic activity was observed for PdNPs (3.0 ± 0.5 nm) stabilized by 4-Me-pyridine in the presence of 2-Cl-pyridine. The results may be helpful for mechanistic considerations on the role of metallic nanoparticles as active species in other organic processes.

Abstract
Biocarbon supported Ni catalysts have been prepared by facile impregnation of Ni species by microwave-heating and used for selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to cyclohexylamine. These catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, N2 sorption measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, temperature programmed reduction of H2 and H2 temperature-programmed desorption. The morphology and particle size of catalysts were imaged by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. For the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to cyclohexylamine, 10%Ni/CSC-II(b) exhibits the best catalytic activity to achieve 100 mol% conversion of nitrobenzene and 96.7% selectivity of cyclohexylamine under reaction conditions of 2.0 MPa H2 and 200 °C, ascribed to high dispersion of Ni species and formation of nanosized Ni particles on the support aided by microwave-heating. Thus-prepared Ni/CSC catalyst is greatly activated, in which the addition of precious metal like Rh is totally avoided.

Abstract
Since its original discovery over a century ago, the water-gas shift reaction (WGSR) has played a crucial role in industrial chemistry, providing a source of H2 to feed fundamental industrial transformations such as the Haber-Bosch synthesis of ammonia. Although the production of hydrogen remains nowadays the major application of the WGSR, the advent of homogeneous catalysis in the 1970s marked the beginning of a synergy between WGSR and organic chemistry. Thus, the reducing power provided by the CO/H2 O couple has been exploited in the synthesis of fine chemicals; not only hydrogenation-type reactions, but also catalytic processes that require a reductive step for the turnover of the catalytic cycle. Despite the potential and unique features of the WGSR, its applications in organic synthesis remain largely underdeveloped. The topic will be critically reviewed herein, with the expectation that an increased awareness may stimulate new, creative work in the area.

Abstract
By a reverse microemulsion method, a series of IrFe bimetallic nanomaterials of variable morphologies and compositions is synthesized and characterized by (57)Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, XRD, XPS, and TEM. The structure evolution, such as IrFe alloy nanoparticles to Ir nanoparticles on Fe2O3 flakes, can be simply tuned by changing the molar ratio of Ir to Fe precursors. In terms of Fe, the relative content of IrFe alloy decreased with the increase of Fe species doped, while that of Fe2O3 flakes increased until reached 100%. The as-prepared IrFe bimetallic nanomaterials were served as catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of 3-nitrostyrene to 3-aminostyrene, and it is found that the catalytic performance was related to the morphology and composition of these nanomaterials. Ir1Fe4 was subsequently identified to be a highly active and exceedingly selective catalyst with good stability and recyclability for the hydrogenation of 3-nitrostyrene, underscoring a remarkable "synergistic effect" of the two metals appearing as the form of Ir nanoparticles loaded on Fe2O3 flakes. For Ir nanoparticles, they act as an active species for the hydrogenation; for Fe2O3 flakes, they favor the preferential adsorption of nitro groups, which account for the better chemoselectivity to objective product.

Abstract
In this work we are inspired to explore gold nanoclusters supported on mesoporous CeO2 nanospheres as nanocatalysts for the reduction of nitrobenzene. Ultrasmall Au nanoclusters (NCs) and mesoporous CeO2 nanospheres were readily synthesized and well characterized. Due to their ultrasmall size, the as-prepared Au clusters can be easily absorbed into the mesopores of the mesoporous CeO2 nanospheres. Owing to the unique mesoporous structure of the CeO2 support, Au nanoclusters in the Au@CeO2 may effectively prevent the aggregation which usually results in a rapid decay of the catalytic activity. It is notable that the ultrasmall gold nanoclusters possess uniform size distribution and good dispersibility on the mesoporous CeO2 supports. Compared to other catalyst systems with different oxide supports, the as-prepared Au nanocluster-CeO2 nanocomposite nanocatalysts showed efficient catalytic performance in transforming nitrobenzene into azoxybenzene. In addition, a plausible mechanism was deeply investigated to explain the transforming process. Au@CeO2 exhibited efficient catalytic activity for reduction of nitrobenzene. This strategy may be easily extended to fabricate many other heterogeneous catalysts including ultrasmall metal nanoclusters and mesoporous oxides.

Abstract
Molecularly well-defined homogeneous catalysts are known for a wide variety of chemical transformations. The effect of small changes in molecular structure can be studied in detail and used to optimize many processes. However, many industrial processes require heterogeneous catalysts because of their stability, ease of separation and recyclability, but these are more difficult to control on a molecular level. Here, we describe the conversion of homogeneous cobalt complexes into heterogeneous cobalt oxide catalysts via immobilization and pyrolysis on activated carbon. The catalysts thus produced are useful for the industrially important reduction of nitroarenes to anilines. The ligand indirectly controls the selectivity and activity of the recyclable catalyst and catalyst optimization can be performed at the level of the solution-phase precursor before conversion into the active heterogeneous catalyst.

Abstract
Iron phthalocyanine with iron sulfate has been successfully applied for high chemo- and regioselective reduction of aromatic nitro compounds to give the corresponding amines in a green solvent system without using any toxic ligand. The catalytic systems were also compatible with a large range of other reducible functional groups, such as keto, acid, amide, ester, halogen, lactone, nitrile, N-benzyl, O-benzyl, hydroxy, and heterocycles. In the present study, dinitro compounds have been regioselectively reduced to the corresponding amines with high yield. In most of the cases the conversion and selectivity was greater than 99% as determined by GC-MS analysis.
