Six-dimensional quantum dynamics study for the dissociative chemisorption of H2 on pure and alloyed AgAu surfaces

The 6D time-dependent wave packet calculations were performed to explore H2 dissociation on Ag, Au, and two AgAu alloy surfaces, using four newly fitted potential energy surfaces based on the neural network fitting to density functional theory energy points. The ligand effect resulting from the Ag-Au interaction causes a reduction in the barrier height for H2+Ag/Au(111) compared to H2+Ag(111). However, the scenario is reversed for H2+Au/Ag(111) and H2+Au(111). The 6D dissociation probabilities of H2 on Ag/Au(111) surfaces are significantly higher than those on the pure Ag(111) surface, but the corresponding results for H2 on Au/Ag(111) surfaces are substantially lower than those on the pure Au(111) surface. The reactivity of H2 on Au(111) is larger than that on Ag(111), despite Ag(111) having a slightly lower static barrier height. This can be attributed to the exceptionally small dissociation probabilities at the hcp and fcc regions, which are at least 100 times smaller compared to those at the bridge or top site for H2+Ag(111). Due to the late barrier being more pronounced, the vibrational excitation of H2 on Ag(111) is more effective in promoting the reaction than on Au(111). Moreover, a high degree of alignment dependence is detected for the four reactions, where the H2 dissociation has the highest probability at the helicopter alignment, as opposed to the cartwheel alignment.

Charge-Transfer-Controlled Quantum Dynamics of HCl Dissociation on the Ag/Au(111) Bimetallic Alloy Surface

Understanding polar molecule dynamics on bimetallic surfaces, especially electropositivity and electronegativity, remains a challenge. Here, we report the reactivity of HCl on a strained Ag monolayer on Au(111) using six-dimensional quantum dynamics with a new machine-learning-based potential energy surface. Surprisingly, HCl reactivity is significantly suppressed by the Ag-Au interaction despite a lower HCl+Ag/Au(111) barrier than pure Ag(111). This arises from charge transfer between Ag and Au, where electronegative Au makes the top Ag layer on Ag/Au(111) electropositive, unlike that on pure Ag(111). Electropositive Ag in HCl+Ag/Au(111) attracts Cl, yielding an unfavorable H-Cl configuration and reduced reactivity. These findings deepen our understanding of polar molecule interactions on bimetallic surfaces, highlighting the role of charge transfer in dissociative chemisorption and the implications for catalyst design in heterogeneous catalysis.

Quantum dynamics reveal different ligand effects by vibrational excitation in the dissociative chemisorption of HCl on the Au/Ag(111) surface

The reactivity and selectivity of bimetallic surfaces are of fundamental importance in industrial applications. Here, we report the first six-dimensional (6D) quantum dynamics study for the role of surface strain and ligand effects on the reactivity of HCl on a strained pseudomorphic monolayer of Au deposited onto a Ag(111) substrate, with the aid of accurate machine learning-based potential energy surfaces. The substitute of Au into Ag changes the location of the transition state; however, the static barrier height remains roughly the same as pure Au(111). The 6D quantum dynamics calculations reveal that the surface strain due to lattice expansion slightly enhances the reactivity. The ligand effect due to electronic structure interactions between Au and Ag substantially suppresses the reactivity of HCl in the ground vibrational state but promotes the reactivity via vibrational excitation at high kinetic energies. This finding can be attributed to more close interaction with Ag atoms at the transition state close to the fcc site, as well as the tight transition-state region, making the vibrational excitation highly efficient in enhancing the reactivity. Our study quantitatively unravels the dynamical origin of reactivity control by two metals, which will ultimately provide valuable insight into the selectivity of the catalyst.

Probing the Irregular Lattice Strain-Induced Electronic Structure Variations on Late Transition Metals for Boosting the Electrocatalyst Activity

Owing to the simplicity in practice and continuous fine-tuning ability toward the binding strengths of adsorbates, the strain effect is intensively explored, especially focused on the modulation of catalytic activity in transition metal (TM) based electrocatalysts. Recently, more and more abnormal cases have been found that cannot be explained by the conventional simplified models. In this work, the strain effects in five late TMs, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, and Pt are studied in-depth regarding the facet engineering, the surface atom density, and the d-band center. Interestingly, the irregular response of Fe lattice to the applied strain is identified, indicating the untapped potential of achieving the phase change by precise strain modulation. For the complicated high-index facets, the surface atom density has become the pivotal factor in determining the surface stability and electroactivity, which identifies the potential of high entropy alloys (HEA) in electrocatalysis. The work supplies insightful understanding and significant references for future research in subtle modulation of electroactivity based on the precise facet engineering in the more complex facets and morphologies.

Performance of van der Waals DFT approaches for helium diffraction on metal surfaces

The ability of the different approaches proposed to date to include the effects of van der Waals (vdW) dispersion forces in density functional theory (DFT) is currently under debate. Here, we used the diffraction of He on a Ru(0 0 0 1) surface as a challenging benchmark system to analyze the suitability of several representative approaches, from the ones correcting the exchange-correlation generalized gradient approximation (GGA) functional, to the ones correcting the DFT energies through pairwise-based methods. To perform our analysis, we have built seven continuous potential energy surfaces (PESs) and carried out quantum dynamics simulations using a multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree method. Our analysis reveals that standard DFT within the PBE-GGA framework, although it overestimates diffraction probabilities, yields the best results in comparison with available experimental measurements. On the other hand, although several of the existing vdW DFT approaches yield physisorption wells in very good agreement with experiment, they all seem to overestimate the long-distance corrugation of the PES, the region probed by He scattering, resulting in a large overestimation of diffraction probabilities.

Tuning Surface Properties of Low Dimensional Materials via Strain Engineering

The promising and versatile applications of low dimensional materials are largely due to their surface properties, which along with their underlying electronic structures have been well studied. However, these materials may not be directly useful for applications requiring properties other than their natal ones. In recent years, strain has been shown to be an additionally useful handle to tune the physical and chemical properties of materials by changing their geometric and electronic structures. The strategies for producing strain are summarized. Then, the electronic structure of quasi-two dimensional layered non-metallic materials (e.g., graphene, MX2, BP, Ge nanosheets) under strain are discussed. Later, the strain effects on catalytic properties of metal-catalyst loaded with strain are focused on. Both experimental and computational perspectives for dealing with strained systems are covered. Finally, an outlook on engineering surface properties utilizing strain is provided.

Quantum and classical dynamics of reactive scattering of H2 from metal surfaces

State-of-the-art theoretical models allow nowadays an accurate description of H₂/metal surface systems and phenomena relative to heterogeneous catalysis. Here we review the most relevant ones investigated during the last 10 years.

The dynamics of adsorption and dissociation of N2 in a monolayer of iron on W(110)

Does N₂ adsorption increase on strained Fe monolayers?

Surface strain improves molecular adsorption but hampers dissociation for N2 on the Fe/W(110) surface

We compare the adsorption dynamics of N(2) on the unstrained Fe(110) and on a 10% expanded Fe monolayer grown on W(110) by performing classical molecular dynamics simulations that use potential energy surfaces calculated with density functional theory. Our results allow us to understand why, experimentally, the molecular adsorption of N(2) is observed on the strained layer but not on Fe(110). Surprisingly, we also find that while surface strain favors the molecular adsorption of N(2) it seems, on the contrary, to impede the dissociative adsorption. This result contrasts with previous examples for which strain is found to modify equally the energetics of chemisorption and dissociation.
