Abstract
Photo-dimers of 1,5-diethynylanthracene and 1,5-bis[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]anthracene, obtained by UV radiation of the monomers, were treated with the bulky aluminium hydride [(SiMe3)2HC]2AlH in hydroalumination reactions. Hydroalumination of the tetraethynyl-substituted anthracene photo-dimers (syn and anti) led to fourfold aluminium-functionalized Janus-like products with two aluminium functions on each side oriented towards the same direction. The reactions of the monomeric anthracene derivatives with [(SiMe3)2HC]2AlH afforded semi-flexible bidentate Lewis acids, which are interesting building blocks for molecular chains bearing multiple Lewis-acidic functions. The aluminium-functionalized anti-photo-dimer was treated with various donor molecules to gain insight into its host-guest chemistry. All poly-Lewis acids and their adducts were characterized by X-ray diffraction experiments, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and by elemental analyses.

Abstract
Supramolecular chemistry is a central topic in modern chemistry. It touches on many traditional disciplines, such as organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, environmental chemistry, and biological chemistry. Supramolecular hosts, inter alia macrocyclic hosts, play critical roles in supramolecular chemistry. Calix[4]pyrroles, non-aromatic tetrapyrrolic macrocycles defined by sp3 hybridized meso bridges, have proved to be versatile receptors for neutral species, anions, and cations, as well as ion pairs. Compared to the parent system, octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole and its derivatives bearing simple appended functionalities, strapped calix[4]pyrroles typically display enhanced binding affinities and selectivities. In this review, we summarize advances in the design and synthesis of strapped calix[4]pyrroles, as well as their broad utility in molecular recognition, supramolecular extraction, separation technology, ion transport, and as agents capable of inhibiting cancer cell proliferation. Future challenges within this sub-field are also discussed.

Abstract
Bidentate boron Lewis acids based on 1,8-diethynylanthracene were synthesised in two steps by initial stannylation of the terminal alkynes and subsequent tin-boron exchange with different chloroboranes. The reactions were very selective, and the target compounds were obtained in high purity and good to excellent yields. Complexation experiments of 1,8-bis[(diphenylboranyl)ethynyl]anthracene with nitrogen bases (pyridine, pyrimidine, TMEDA) afforded three stable adducts, which were structurally characterised by X-ray diffraction. Competition experiments demonstrated the selective exchange of guests, and quantum-chemical calculations provided information on their energetics. NMR experiments at low temperature gave insight into the dynamic behaviour of the TMEDA adduct.

Abstract
The binding interactions between the azide anion (N3-) and the strapped calix[4]pyrroles 2 and 3 bearing auxiliary hydrogen bonding donors on the bridging moieties, as well as of normal calix[4]pyrrole 1, were investigated via 1H NMR spectroscopic and isothermal titration calorimetry analyses. The resulting data revealed that receptors 2 and 3 have significantly higher affinities for the azide anion in organic media as compared with the unfunctionalized calix[4]pyrrole 1 and other azide receptors reported to date. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and calculations using density functional theory revealed that receptor 2 binds CsN3 in two distinct structural forms. As judged from the metric parameters, in the resulting complexes one limiting azide anion resonance contributor is favored over the other, with the specifics depending on the binding mode. In contrast to what is seen for 2, receptor 3 forms a CsN3 complex in 20% CD3OD in CDCl3, wherein the azide anion is bound only vertically to the NH protons of the calix[4]pyrrole and the cesium cation is complexed within the cone shaped-calix[4]pyrrole bowl. The bound cesium cation is also in close proximity to a naphthobipyrrole subunit present in a different molecule, forming an apparent cation-π complex.

The syntheses of tris(organostannyl)methanes HC(SnX n Ph(3-n))3 (1, n=0; 2, n=1, X=I; 3, n=1, X =F; 4, n=1, X=Cl; 5, n=1, X=OAc; 6, n=2, X=I; 7, n=2, X=Cl) and the organostannate complexes Et4N[HC(SnIPh2)3⋅F] (8), Ph4P[HC(SnClPh2)3⋅Cl] (9), and [Ph4P]2[HC(SnCl2Ph)3⋅2 Cl] (10) are reported. The compounds were characterized by 1H, 13C, 19F, and 119Sn NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, electrospray mass spectrometry, and (with the exception of 3) single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. From the reaction between 2 and AgClO4 resulted the unprecedented hexanuclear organotin oxocluster [HC{Sn(ClO4)2Ph2}2Sn(OH)2Ph]2 (11), the molecular structure of which was elucidated by using X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
The field of (18)F chemistry is rapidly expanding because of the use of this radionuclide in radiotracers for positron emission tomography (PET). Until recently, most [(18)F]-radiotracers were generated by the direct attachment of (18)F to a carbon in the organic backbone of the radiotracer. The past decade has witnessed the emergence of a new strategy based on the formation of an (18)F-group 13 element bond. This approach, which is rooted in the field of fluoride anion complexation/coordination chemistry, has led to the development of a remarkable family of boron, aluminium and gallium [(18)F]-fluoride anion complexing agents which can be conjugated with peptides and small molecules to generate disease specific PET radiotracers. This review is dedicated to the chemistry of these group 13 [(18)F]-fluorides anion complexing agents and their use in PET. Some of the key fluoride-binding motifs covered in this review include the trifluoroborate unit bound to neutral or cationic electron deficient backbones, the BF2 unit of BODIPY dyes, and AlF or GaF3 units coordinated to multidentate Lewis basic ligands. In addition to describing how these moieties can be converted into their [(18)F]-analogs, this review also dicusses their incorporation into bioconjugates for application in PET.

Abstract
Boryl halide, carboxylate and sulfonate complexes of 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (dipp-Imd-BH(2)X, X = halide or sulfonate) have been prepared from the parent borane dipp-Imd-BH(3) by (1) substitution reactions with R-X (X = halide or sulfonate), (2) reactions with electrophiles (like I(2) or NIS), or (3) acid/base reactions with HX (provided that HX has a pK(a) of about 2 or less). Dipp-Imd-BH(2)I is most conveniently prepared by reaction with diiodine while dipp-Imd-BH(2)OTf is best prepared by reaction with triflic acid. These and other less reactive complexes behave as electrophiles and can be substituted by a wide range of heteroatom nucleophiles including halides, thiolates and other sulfur-based nucleophiles, isocyanate, azide, nitrite, and cyanide. The resulting products are remarkably stable, and many have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. Several are members of very rare classes of functionalized boron compounds (boron azide, nitro compound, nitrous ester, etc.).
