Host-Guest Encapsulation of RIBO with TSC4X: Synthesis, Characterization, and Its Application by Physicochemical and Computational Investigations

In our present work, we synthesized a new encapsulated complex denoted as RIBO-TSC4X, which was derived from an important vitamin riboflavin (RIBO) and p-sulfonatothiacalix[4]arene(TSC4X). The synthesized complex RIBO-TSC4X was then characterized by utilizing several spectroscopic techniques such as ¹H-NMR, FT-IR, PXRD, SEM, and TGA. Job's plot has been employed to show the encapsulation of RIBO (guest) with TSC4X (host) having a 1:1 molar ratio. The molecular association constant of the complex entity (RIBO-TSC4X) was found to be 3116.29 ± 0.17 M^-1, suggesting the formation of a stable complex. The augment in aqueous solubility of the RIBO-TSC4X complex compared to pure RIBO was investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy, and it was viewed that the newly synthesized complex has almost 30 times enhanced solubility over pure RIBO. The enhancement of thermal stability upto 440 °C for the RIBO-TSC4X complex was examined by TG analysis. This research also forecasts RIBO's release behavior in the presence of CT-DNA, and at the same time, BSA binding study was also carried out. The synthesized RIBO-TSC4X complex exhibited comparatively better free radical scavenging activity, thereby minimizing oxidative injury of the cell as evident from a series of antioxidant and anti-lipid peroxidation assay. Furthermore, the RIBO-TSC4X complex showed peroxidase-like biomimetic activity, which is very useful for several enzyme catalyst reactions.

Green Tandem [5C + 1C] Cycloaromatization of α-Alkenoyl Ketene Dithioacetals and Nitroethane in Water: Eco-Friendly Synthesis of Ortho-Acylphenols

For the first time, an eco-friendly and sustainable tandem [5C + 1C] cycloaromatization of α-alkenoyl ketene dithioacetals and nitroethane in water for the efficient synthesis of ortho-acylphenols was reported. In refluxing water, a range of α-alkenoyl ketene dithioacetals and nitroethane smoothly underwent tandem Michael addition/cyclization/aromatization reactions in the presence of 2.0 equivalents of DBU to provide various ortho-acylphenols in excellent yields. The green approach to ortho-acylphenols not only avoided the use of harmful organic solvents, which could result in serious environmental and safety issues, but also exhibited fascinating features such as good substrate scope, excellent yields, simple purification for desired products, ease of scale-up, and reusable aqueous medium.

Are Nano TiO2 Inclusions Improving Biocompatibility of Photocurable Polydimethylsiloxane for Maxillofacial Prosthesis Manufacturing?

(1) Background: The development of a biocompatible material for direct additive manufacturing of maxillofacial extraoral prosthesis is still a challenging task. The aim of the present study was to obtain a photocurable PDMS, with nano TiO2 inclusions, for directly 3D printing of extraoral, maxillofacial prosthesis. The biocompatibility of the newly obtained nanocomposite was also investigated; (2) Methods: 2.5% (m/m) titania nanoparticles (TiO2) oxide anatase and a photoinitiator, benzophenone (BF) 4.5% were added to commercially available PDMS for maxillofacial soft prostheses manufacturing. The three different samples (PDMS, PDMS-BF and PDMS-BF-TiO2) were assessed by dielectric curing analysis (DEA) based on their viscosities and curing times. In vitro micronucleus test (MNvit) was performed for genotoxicity assessment and three concentrations of each compounds (2 mg/L, 4 mg/L and 8 mg/L) were tested in duplicate and compared to a control; (3) Results: The nanocomposite PDMS-BP-TiO2 was fully reticulated within a few minutes under UV radiation, according to the dielectric analysis. PDMS-BF-TiO2 nanocomposite showed the lowest degree of cyto- and genotoxicity; (4) Conclusions: In the limits of the present study, the proposed ex situ preparation of a PDMS-BP-TiO2 offers an easy, simple, and promising technique that could be successfully used for 3D printing medical applications.

3D printing of functional microrobots

3D printing (also called "additive manufacturing" or "rapid prototyping") is able to translate computer-aided and designed virtual 3D models into 3D tangible constructs/objects through a layer-by-layer deposition approach. Since its introduction, 3D printing has aroused enormous interest among researchers and engineers to understand the fabrication process and composition-structure-property correlation of printed 3D objects and unleash its great potential for application in a variety of industrial sectors. Because of its unique technological advantages, 3D printing can definitely benefit the field of microrobotics and advance the design and development of functional microrobots in a customized manner. This review aims to present a generic overview of 3D printing for functional microrobots. The most applicable 3D printing techniques, with a focus on laser-based printing, are introduced for the 3D microfabrication of microrobots. 3D-printable materials for fabricating microrobots are reviewed in detail, including photopolymers, photo-crosslinkable hydrogels, and cell-laden hydrogels. The representative applications of 3D-printed microrobots with rational designs heretofore give evidence of how these printed microrobots are being exploited in the medical, environmental, and other relevant fields. A future outlook on the 3D printing of microrobots is also provided.

Ammonium phosphomolybdate: a material for dielectric crossover and resistive switching performance

The yellow ammonium phosphomolybdate [(NH₄)₃PMo₁₂O₄₀] (YAPM) is a robust and elegant compound that has found innumerable field applications. Herein, we have shown that this inorganic polymer serves as a novel dielectric material and a compound for memory device fabrication. It displays changeable dielectric performance and ac conductivity under UV (∼365 nm) irradiation. Drastic lowering of the dielectric constant (ε') was observed with the increase in dielectric loss factor, which was ascertained due to electron accumulation under UV exposure producing green APM (GAPM). The contributions of the Maxwell-Wagner polarization and the dipolar relaxation are correlated with the charge transfer and dielectric contribution of the material. Interestingly, the pressure-induced reduction of Mo(vi) to Mo(v) is reported for the first time and is similar to UV-exposed mixed-valence GAPM, which was corroborated by EPR spectra. In the ac signal, the crossover from quantum mechanical tunneling to hopping conduction is an adequate explanation for YAPM under UV irradiation. The fabricated device Au‖YAPM‖Au on a flexible paper substrate shows a resistive memory behavior that is modeled as a Schottky-type emission (SE) and Poole-Frenkel (PF) carrier transport for the OFF and ON states, respectively. The device exhibited a constant ON-OFF current ratio of 2 × 10² for YAPM. The OFF state endurance of the device (with 3 V pulses having 1 s time-period) under UV showed a steady increment current strength with time. After 100 s of UV exposure, the Au‖YAPM‖Au device became Au‖GAPM‖Au, and the conductivity completely shifted to a stable ON-state (at 300 s).

Inside/Outside: Post-Synthetic Modification of the Zr-Benzophenonedicarboxylate Metal-Organic Framework

The Zr‐based metal–organic framework, Zr‐bzpdc‐MOF, contains the photoreactive linker molecule benzophenone‐4,4′‐dicarboxylate (bzpdc) which imparts the possibility for photochemical post‐synthetic modification. Upon irradiation with UV light, the keto group of the benzophenone moiety will react with nearly every C−H bond‐containing molecule. Within this paper, we further explore the photochemical reactivity of the Zr‐bzpdc‐MOF, especially with regard to which restrictions govern internal versus external reactions. We show that apart from reactions with C−H bond‐containing molecules, the MOF reacts also with water. By studying the reactivity versus linear alcohols we find a clear delineation in that shorter alcohol molecules (up to butanol as a borderline case) react with photoexcited keto groups throughout the whole crystals whereas longer ones react only with surface‐standing keto groups. In addition, we show that with the alkanes n‐butane to n‐octane, the reaction is restricted to the outer surface. We hypothesize that the reactivity of the Zr‐bzpdc‐MOF versus different reagents depends on the accessibility of the pore system which in turn depends mainly on the size of the reagents and on their polarity. The possibility to direct the post‐synthetic modification of the Zr‐bzpdc‐MOF (selective modification of the whole pore system versus surface modification) gives additional degrees of freedom in the design of this metal–organic framework for shaping and for applications.

Colloidally Confined Crystallization of Highly Efficient Ammonium Phosphomolybdate Catalysts

Nanodroplets in inverse miniemulsions provide a colloidal confinement for the crystallization of ammonium phosphomolybdate (APM), influencing the resulting particle size. The effects of the space confinement are investigated by comparing the crystallization of analogous materials both in miniemulsion and in bulk solution. Both routes result in particles with a rhombododecahedral morphology, but the ones produced in miniemulsion have sizes between 40 and 90 nm, 3 orders of magnitude smaller than the ones obtained in bulk solution. The catalytic activity of the materials is studied by taking the epoxidation of cis-cyclooctene as a model reaction. The miniemulsion route yields APM particles catalytically much more active than analogous samples produced in bulk solution, which can be explained by their higher dispersibility in organic solvents, their higher surface area, and their higher porosity. Inorganic phosphate salt precursors are compared with organic phosphate sources. APM nanoparticles prepared in miniemulsion from d-glucose-6-phosphate and O-phospho-dl-serine yield a conversion in the epoxidation reaction of more than 90% after only 1 h, compared to 30% for materials prepared in bulk solution. In addition, the catalysts prepared in miniemulsion display a promising recyclability.

Ozonation of the oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene UV-filters: Reaction kinetics, absorbance characteristics, and transformation products

UV-filters (UVFs) are active ingredients in personal care products that protect skin from exposure to UV light. Environmentally-relevant concentrations of UVFs have recently been linked to toxicity in aquatic organisms, necessitating research into improved UVF removal in water/wastewater treatment. Here, we investigated ozonation of the three most commonly employed UVFs: octinoxate (OMC), octocrylene (OC), and oxybenzone (OXY). Specific second-order rate constants for UVF reaction with ozone were identified as follows: OMC, 5.25×10⁴M^-1s^-1; OC, 1.58M^-1s^-1; OXY (neutral), 3.80×10²M^-1s^-1; and, OXY (anion), 1.51×10⁶M^-1s^-1. These kinetic parameters indicated that OMC and OXY undergo significant (2-log or greater) transformation for typical ozone exposures in disinfection processes; however, minimal oxidation is expected for OC. UV absorbance mapping was employed to characterize the loss of UVF activity (i.e., absorbance across the UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C ranges) during ozonation. These 4-dimensional maps also confirmed ozone attack mechanisms, namely reaction at phenolate (OXY) and olefin (OMC, OC) groups. Primary transformation products from these reactions were identified for all three UVFs of concern. For OC and OXY, the benzophenone structure is conserved, suggesting that transformation products retain toxicity concerns.

Palladium-catalyzed ortho-CH-bond oxygenation of aromatic ketones

A palladium-catalyzed C((sp2))-H bond oxygenation reaction is described. This protocol represents the first example of a C-H bond cleavage/C-O bond formation sequence, by employing a ketone moiety as the directing group. With this new catalytic method, a variety of ortho-acylphenols can be easily accessed from arylketones.

Synthesis of ortho-acylphenols through the palladium-catalyzed ketone-directed hydroxylation of arenes

Ketone in charge: a formal ketone-directed palladium-catalyzed ortho-hydroxylation of arenes has been developed as an effective approach to access o-acylphenols from simple arylketones. A Pd-catalyzed oxidative ortho-carbonylation reaction using ketone directing groups to access a ketal-lactone motif is also demonstrated.
