Photoswitching of Co(ii)-based coordination cages containing azobenzene backbones

Inclusion of photoswitchable azobenzene units as spacers into ditopic bridging ligands Lm and Lp, containing two chelating pyrazolyl-pyridine termini, allows formation of metal complex assemblies with Co(ii) that undergo a range of light-induced structural transformations. One notable result is the light-induced conversion of a Co2(Lp)3 dinuclear triple helicate (based on the E ligand isomer) to a C 3-symmetric Co4(Lp)6 assembly, assumed to be an edge-bridged tetrahedral cage, based on the Z ligand isomer. Another is the preparation of a series of Co4(Lm)6 complexes, of which Co4(E-Lm)6 was crystallographically characterised and consists of a pair of Co2(Lm)2 double helicates connected by an additional two bridging ligands which span the pair of helicate units, giving a cyclic Co4 array in which one and then two bridging ligands alternate around the periphery. A set of Co4(Lm)6 complexes could be prepared containing different ratios of Z : E ligand isomers (0 : 6, 2 : 4, 4 : 2 and 6 : 0) of which Co4(Z-Lm)2(E-Lm)4 was particularly stable and dominated the speciation behaviour, either during light-induced switching of the ligand geometry in pre-formed complexes, or when ligand isomers were combined in different proportions during the preparation. These examples of (i) interconversion between Co2L3 (helicate) and (ii) Co4L6 (cage) assemblies with Lp, and the interconversion between a series of Co4L6 assemblies Co4(Z-Lm)n(E-Lm)6-n with Lm, constitute significant advances in the field of photoswitchable supramolecular assemblies.

Biasing the Formation of Solution-Unstable Intermediates in Coordination Self-Assembly by Mechanochemistry

Due to the reversible nature of coordination bonds and solvation effect, coordination self-assembly pathways are often difficult to elucidate experimentally in solution, as intermediates and products are in constant equilibration. The present study shows that some of these transient and high-energy self-assembly intermediates can be accessed by means of ball-milling approaches. Among them, highly aqueous-unstable Pd3 L11 and Pd6 L14 open-cage intermediates of the framed Fujita Pd6 L14 cage and Pd2 L22 , Pd3 L21 and Pd4 L22 intermediates of Mukherjee Pd6 L24 capsule are successfully trapped in solid-state, where Pd=tmedaPd2+ , L1=2,4,6-tris(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine and L2=1,3,5-tris(1-imidazolyl)benzene). Their structures are assigned by a combination of solution-based characterization tools such as standard NMR spectroscopy, DOSY NMR, ESI-MS and X-ray diffraction. Collectively, these results highlight the opportunity of using mechanochemistry to access unique chemical space with vastly different reactivity compared to conventional solution-based supramolecular self-assembly reactions.

Anion-encapsulating, discrete prism and extended frusta, from trimetallated triangular macrocycles and linkers

Reaction of a trinuclear triangular macrocyclic complex Pb3L(CF3SO3)6 with bidentate linkers in a ratio of 3 equiv. of linker per 2 equiv. of complex, produces a prismatic structure with 4,4'-dipyridyl, and two unprecedented, extended 3D frustum-like structures with 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene and 1,4-di(4-pyridyl)benzene. The cavities of these structures encapsulate triflate anions.

Exploiting reduced-symmetry ligands with pyridyl and imidazole donors to construct a second-generation stimuli-responsive heterobimetallic [PdPtL4]4+ cage

A new sequential metalation strategy that enables the assembly of a new more robust reduced symmetry heterobimetallic [PdPtL4]4+ cage C is reported. By exploiting a low-symmetry ditopic ligand (L) that features imidazole and pyridine donor units we were able to selectively form a [Pt(L)4]2+ "open-cage" complex. When this was treated with Pd(ii) ions the cage C assembled. 1H and DOSY nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESIMS) data were consistent with the quantitative formation of the cage and the heterobimetallic structure was confirmed by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The cage C was shown to bind anionic guest molecules. NMR studies suggested that these guests interacted with the cavity of the cage in a specific orientation and this was confirmed for the mesylate ion (MsO-) : C host-guest adduct using X-ray crystallography. In addition, the system was shown to be stimulus-responsive and could be opened and closed on demand when treated with appropriate stimuli. If a guest molecule was bound within the cage, the opening and closing was accompanied by the release and re-uptake of the guest molecule.

Encapsulation Studies on closo-Dicarbadodecaborane Isomers in Neutral Tetrahedral Palladium(II) Cages

The encapsulation of icosahedral closo-dicarbadodecaborane (o-, m-, and p-carboranes, Cb) as guest molecules at the intrinsic cavities of the three isostructural tetrahedral cages [{Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO}₄(Cl-AN)₆] (1), [{Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO}₄(Br-AN)₆] (2), and [{Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO}₄(H-AN)₆] (3) was studied. The formation of definite host-guest assemblies was probed with mass spectrometry, IR, and NMR spectral analysis. 2D DOSY ¹H NMR of the Cb⊂Cage systems showed similar diffusion coefficient (D) values for the host and guest species, signifying the encapsulation of these guests inside the cage assemblies. The hydrodynamic radius (R_H) derived from the D values of the host and guest species further confirmed the encapsulation of the Cb isomers at the cage pockets. The single-molecule energy optimization of the host-guest assemblies indicated the preferential binding of o-Cb as a guest inside the cages (1-3). The stabilization of these Cb guests inside these cages was further attributed to various possible nonclassical C-H···X-type interactions.

Mapping the Assembly of Neutral Tetrahedral Cages Tethered by Oximido Linkers and Their Guest Encapsulation Studies

A primary criterion for the design of polyhedral metal-organic cages is the requirement of geometrically matched pairs of metal ions and ligand moieties. However, understanding the pathway it takes to reach the final polyhedral structure can provide more insights into the self-assembly process and improved design strategies. In this regard, we report two neutral tetrahedral cages with the formulas {[Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO]₄(L¹)₆} (1-TD) and {[Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO]₄(L²)₆} (2-TD) starting from the acetate-bridged cluster {[Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO]₂(OAc)₂(OH)}₂·2(CH₃)₂SO (HEXA-Pd) and the respective oxamide precursors (L¹H₂: [C₂(NH₂)₂O₂]) and (L²H₂: (C₂(NHMe)₂O₂]). When subtle variations in the reaction conditions were made, two new tetrameric Pd₁₂ assemblies, {[Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO]₄(L¹)₂(OAc)₄(OMe)₄} (1-TM) and {[Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO]₄(L²)₂(OAc)₄(OMe)₄} (2-TM), were obtained from the same precursors. Detailed investigations using NMR, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, and computational studies indicate that the macrocyclic complexes 1-TM and 2-TM are the reaction intermediates involved in the formation of the tetrahedral cages 1-TD and 2-TD, respectively. Moreover, the tetrahedral cages 1-TD and 2-TD exhibited intrinsic cavities of volume ∼85 ų. Guest encapsulation studies revealed that the cage 1-TD can encapsulate a wide range of guest molecules such as CH₂Cl₂, CHCl₃, CCl₄, C₆H₆, and C₆H₅F. Interestingly, 1-TD was shown to exhibit a preferential binding of C₆H₅F and C₆H₆ over other halogenated guest molecules, as determined from NMR titrations and computational studies.

Identifying porous cage subsets in the Cambridge Structural Database using topological data analysis

As rationally designable materials, the variety and number of synthesised metal-organic cages (MOCs) and organic cages (OCs) are expected to grow in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). In this regard, two of the most important questions are, which structures are already present in the CSD and how can they be identified? Here, we present a cage mining methodology based on topological data analysis and a combination of supervised and unsupervised learning that led to the derivation of - to the best of our knowledge - the first and only MOC dataset of 1839 structures and the largest experimental OC dataset of 7736 cages, as of March 2022. We illustrate the use of such datasets with a high-throughput screening of MOCs and OCs for xenon/krypton separation, important gases in multiple industries, including healthcare.

Sterics and metal-ion radius control the self-assembly of [M2L3] helicates

The interplay of many factors influences the outcomes of self-assembly reactions. Using an acetylene-appended quaterpyridine ligand we show that both the size of the metal ion and the presence of steric repulsion between the acetylene groups result in the exclusive formation of [M₂L₃] helicates rather than a helicate/tetrahedron equilibrium.

Positive Cooperativity Induced by Interstrand Interactions in Silver(I) Complexes with α,α′‐Diimine Ligands

The allosteric positive cooperativity accompanying the formation of compact [Cu^I(α,α′‐diimine)₂]⁺ building blocks contributed to the historically efficient synthesis of metal‐containing catenates and knotted assemblies. However, its limited magnitude can easily be overcome by the negative chelate cooperativity that controls the overall formation of related polymetallic multistranded helicates and grids. Despite the more abundant use of analogous dioxygen‐resistant [Ag^I(α,α′‐diimine)₂]⁺ units in modern entangled metallo‐supramolecular assemblies, a related thermodynamic justification was absent. Solid‐state structural characterizations show the successive formation of [Ag^I(α,α′‐diimine)(CH₃CN)][X] and [Ag^I(α,α′‐diimine)₂][X] upon the stepwise reactions of α,α′‐diimine=2,2′‐bipyridine (bpy) or 1,10‐phenanthroline (phen) derivatives with AgX (X=BF₄⁻, ClO₄⁻, PF₆⁻). In room‐temperature, 5–10 mM acetonitrile solutions, these cationic complexes exist as mixtures in fast exchange on the NMR timescale. Spectrophotometric titrations using the unsubstituted bpy and phen ligands point to the statistical (=non‐cooperative) binding of two successive bidentate ligands around Ag^I, a mechanism probably driven by the formation of hydrophobic belts, that overcomes the unfavorable decrease in the positive charge borne by the metallic cation. Surprisingly, the addition of methyl groups adjacent to the nitrogen donors (6,6′ positions in dmbpy; 2,9 positions in dmphen) induces positive cooperativity for the formation of [Ag(dmbpy)₂]⁺ and [Ag(dmphen)₂]⁺, a trend assigned to additional stabilizing interligand interactions. Adding rigid and polarizable phenyl side arms in [Ag(Brdmbpy)₂]⁺ further reinforces the positively cooperative process, while limiting the overall decrease in metal–ligand affinity.

Incorporation of a Phosphino(pyridine) Subcomponent Enables the Formation of Cages with Homobimetallic and Heterobimetallic Vertices

Biological systems employ multimetallic assemblies to achieve a range of functions. Here we demonstrate the preparation of metal–organic cages that contain either homobimetallic or heterobimetallic vertices. These vertices are constructed using 2-formyl-6-diphenylphosphinopyridine, which forms ligands that readily bridge between a pair of metal centers, thus enforcing the formation of bimetallic coordination motifs. Two pseudo-octahedral homometallic M^I₁₂L₄ cages (M^I = Cu^I or Ag^I) were prepared, with a head-to-head configuration of their vertices confirmed by X-ray crystallography and multinuclear NMR for Ag^I. The phosphino-pyridine subcomponent also enabled the formation of a class of octanuclear Cd^II₄Cu^I₄L₄ tetrahedral cages, representing an initial example of self-assembled cages containing well-defined heterobimetallic vertices.

Mechanochemical Access to a Short-Lived Cyclic Dimer Pd2 L2 : An Elusive Kinetic Species En Route to Molecular Triangle Pd3 L3 and Molecular Square Pd4 L4

Pd-based molecular square Pd₄ L₄ and triangle Pd₃ L₃ represent the molecular ancestors of metal-coordination polyhedra that have been an integral part of the field for the last 30 years. Conventional solution-based reactions between cis-protected Pd ions and 2,2'-bipyridine exclusively give Pd₄ L₄ and/or Pd₃ L₃ as the sole products. We herein show that, under solvent-free mechanochemical conditions, the self-assembly energy landscape can be thermodynamically manipulated to form an elusive cyclic dimer Pd₂ L₂ for the first time. In the absence of solvent, Pd₂ L₂ is indefinitely stable in the solid-state, but converts rapidly to its thermodynamic products Pd₃ L₃ and Pd₄ L₄ in solution, confirming Pd₂ L₂ as a short-lived kinetic species in the solution-based self-assembly process. Our results highlight how mechanochemistry grants access to a vastly different chemical space than available under conventional solution conditions. This provides a unique opportunity to isolate elusive species in self-assembly processes that are too reactive to both "see" and "capture".

Heterotrimetallic Double Cavity Cages: Syntheses and Selective Guest Binding

A strategy for the generation of heterotrimetallic double cavity (DC) cages [Pd_nPt_mL₄]⁶⁺ (DC1: n=1, m=2; and DC2: n=2, m=1) is reported. The DC cages were generated by combining an inert platinum(II) tetrapyridylaldehyde complex with a suitably substituted pyridylamine and Pd^II ions. ¹H and DOSY nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESIMS) data were consistent with the formation of the DC architectures. DC1 and DC2 were shown to interact with several different guest molecules. The structure of DC1, which features two identical cavities, binding two 2,6‐diaminoanthraquinone (DAQ) guest molecules was determined by single‐crystal X‐ray crystallography. In addition, DC1 was shown to bind two molecules of 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU) in a statistical (non‐cooperative) manner. In contrast, DC2, which features two different cage cavities, was found to interact with two different guests, 5‐FU and cisplatin, selectively.

Supramolecular Helical Assemblies of Dirhodium(II) Paddlewheels with 1,4-Diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane: A Remarkable Substituent Effect on the Helical Sense Preference and Amplification of the Helical Handedness Excess of Metallo-Supramolecular Helical Polymers

We report unique coordination-driven supramolecular helical assemblies of a series of dirhodium(II) tetracarboxylate paddlewheels bearing chiral phenyl- or methyl-substituted amide-bound m-terphenyl residues with triethylene glycol monomethyl ether (TEG) or n-dodecyl tails through a 1:1 complexation with 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO). The chiral dirhodium complexes with DABCO in CHCl₃/n-hexane (1:1) form one-handed helical coordination polymers with a controlled propeller chirality at the m-terphenyl groups, which are stabilized by intermolecular hydrogen-bonding networks between the adjacent amide groups at the periphery mainly via a cooperative nucleation-elongation mechanism as supported by circular dichroism (CD), vibrational CD, and variable-temperature (VT) absorption and CD analyses. The VT visible-absorption titrations revealed the temperature-dependent changes in the degree of polymerization. The columnar supramolecular helical structures were elucidated by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The helix sense of the homopolymer carrying the bulky phenyl and n-dodecyl substituents is opposite those of other chiral homopolymers despite having the same absolute configuration at the pendants. A remarkably strong "sergeants and soldiers" (S&S) effect was observed in most of the chiral/achiral copolymers, while the copolymers of the bulky chiral phenyl-substituted dirhodium complexes with n-dodecyl chains displayed an "abnormal" S&S effect accompanied by an inversion of the helix sense, which could be switched to a "normal" S&S effect by changing the solvent composition. A nonracemic dirhodium complex of 20% enantiomeric excess bearing the less bulky chiral methyl substituents with n-dodecyl chains assembled with DABCO to form an almost one-handed helix (the "majority rule" (MR) effect), whereas the three other nonracemic copolymers showed a weak MR effect.

Emerging properties from mechanical tethering within a post-synthetically functionalised catenane scaffold

Using a post-synthetic modification strategy we have prepared a series of functionalised [2]catenanes to study the impact of mechanically-enforced proximity on functional group properties, including emission, electrochemistry and photoreactivity.

High-Throughput Computational Evaluation of Low Symmetry Pd2 L4 Cages to Aid in System Design*

Unsymmetrical ditopic ligands can self-assemble into reduced-symmetry Pd2 L4 metallo-cages with anisotropic cavities, with implications for high specificity and affinity guest-binding. Mixtures of cage isomers can form, however, resulting in undesirable system heterogeneity. It is paramount to be able to design components that preferentially form a single isomer. Previous data suggested that computational methods could predict with reasonable accuracy whether unsymmetrical ligands would preferentially self-assemble into single cage isomers under constraints of geometrical mismatch. We successfully apply a collaborative computational and experimental workflow to mitigate costly trial-and-error synthetic approaches. Our rapid computational workflow constructs unsymmetrical ligands and their Pd2 L4 cage isomers, ranking the likelihood for exclusively forming cis-Pd2 L4 assemblies. From this narrowed search space, we successfully synthesised four new, low-symmetry, cis-Pd2 L4 cages.

Homochiral Dodecanuclear Lanthanide "Cage in Cage" for Enantioselective Separation

It is extremely difficult to anticipate the structure and the stereochemistry of a complex, particularly when the ligand is flexible and the metal node adopts diverse coordination numbers. When trivalent lanthanides (Ln^III) and enantiopure amino acid ligands are utilized as building blocks, self-assembly sometimes yields rare chiral polynuclear structures. In this study, an enantiopure carboxyl-functionalized amino acid-based ligand with C₃ symmetry reacts with lanthanum cations to give a homochiral porous coordination cage, (Δ/Λ)₁₂-PCC-57. The dodecanuclear lanthanide cage has an unprecedented octahedral "cage-in-cage" framework. During the self-assembly, the chirality is transferred from the enantiopure ligand and fixed by the binuclear lanthanide cluster to give 12 metal centers that have either Δ or Λ homochiral stereochemistry. The cage exhibits excellent enantioselective separation of racemic alcohols, 2,3-dihydroquinazolinones, and multiple commercially available drugs. This finding exhibits a rare example of a multinuclear lanthanide complex with a dual-walled topology and homochirality. The highly ordered self-assembly and self-sorting of flexible amino acids and lanthanides shed light on the chiral transformation between different complicated artificial systems that mimic natural enzymes.

Programmable Synthesis of Silver Wheels

The synthesis of sandwich-shaped multinuclear silver complexes with planar penta- and tetranuclear wheel-shaped silver units and a central anion, [Ag_n(2-HPB)₂(A^-)](OTf^-)_n-1, nAg^A, n = 4 or 5 and A^- = OH^- or F^- or Cl^-, is reported, along with complete spectroscopic and structural characterization. An NMR mechanistic study reveals that silver complexes were formed in the following order: 2Ag → 3Ag^H₂O → 5Ag^OH → 4Ag^OH. The central hydroxides in 4Ag^OH and 5Ag^OH exhibit exotic physical properties due to the confined environment inside the complex. The size of these silver wheels can be tuned by changing the central anion or extracting/adding one silver atom. This study provides the facile way to synthesize discrete wheel-shaped multinuclear silver complexes and provides valuable insights into the dynamics of the self-assembly process.

Water-Mediated Reversible Control of Three-State Double-Stranded Titanium(IV) Helicates

A stimuli-responsible reversible structural transformation is of key importance in biological systems. We now report a unique water-mediated reversible transformation among three discrete double-stranded dinuclear titanium(IV) achiral meso- and chiral rac-helicates linked by a mono(μ-oxo) or a bis(μ-hydroxo) bridge between the titanium ions through hydration/dehydration or its combination with a water-mediated dynamic cleavage/re-formation of the titanium-phenoxide (Ti-OPh) bonds. The bis(μ-hydroxo) bridged titanium(IV) meso-helicate prepared from two tetraphenol strands with titanium(IV) oxide was readily dehydrated in CD₃CN containing a small amount of water upon heating, accompanied by Ti-OPh bond cleavage/re-formation catalyzed by water, resulting in the formation of the mono(μ-oxo)-bridged rac-helicate, which reverted back to the original bis(μ-hydroxo)-bridged meso-helicate upon hydration in aqueous CD₃CN. These reversible transformations between the meso- and rac-helicates were also promoted in the presence of a catalytic amount of an acid, which remarkably accelerated the reactions at lower temperature. Interestingly, in anhydrous CD₃CN, the bis(μ-hydroxo)-bridged meso-helicate was further slowly converted to a different helicate, while its meso-helicate framework was maintained, namely the mono(μ-oxo)-bridged meso-helicate, through dehydration upon heating and its meso to meso transformation was significantly accelerated in the presence of cryptand[2.2.1], which contributes to removing Na⁺ ions coordinated to the helicate. Upon cooling, the backward meso to meso transformation took place via hydration. Hence, three different, discrete double-stranded chiral rac- and achiral meso-titanium(IV) helicates linked by a mono(μ-oxo) or a bis(μ-hydroxo) bridge were successfully generated in a controllable manner by a change in the water content of the reaction media.

Multi-functional, Low Symmetry Pd2 L4 Nanocage Libraries*

Although many impressive metallo-supramolecular architectures have been reported, they tend towards high symmetry structures and avoid extraneous functionality to ensure high fidelity in the self-assembly process. This minimalist approach, however, limits the range of accessible structures and thus their potential applications. Herein is described the synthesis of a family of ditopic ligands wherein the ligand scaffolds are both low symmetry and incorporate exohedral functional moieties. Key to this design is the use of CuI -catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) chemistry, as the triazole is capable of acting as both a coordinating heterocycle and a tether between the ligand framework and functional unit simultaneously. A common precursor was used to generate ligands with various functionalities, allowing control of electronic properties whilst maintaining the core structure of the resultant cis-Pd2 L4 nanocage assemblies. The isostructural nature of the scaffold frameworks enabled formation of combinatorial libraries from the self-assembly of ligand mixtures, generating a statistical mixture of multi-functional, low symmetry architectures.

A family of diastereomeric dodecanuclear coordination cages based on inversion of chirality of individual triangular cyclic helicate faces

The dodecanuclear coordination cage [Cd₁₂(L^naph)₁₂(L^mes)₄](BF₄)₂₄ consists of a set of four triangular, trinuclear helical panels {Cd₃(μ-L^naph)₃}⁶⁺ (based on ditopic bridging ligands L^naph), which are connected by four tritopic ligands L^mes. The result is that the four triangular helical panels and the four L^mes-capped triangular faces of the cuboctahedral core form two alternating subsets of the eight triangular faces of the cuboctahedron. Crystallographic investigations revealed that the triangular helicate faces can have ‘clockwise’ (C) or ‘anticlockwise’ (A) helicity, and that the helicity of each face can vary independently of the others as they are mechanically separated. This generates a set of three diastereoisomers in which all four cyclic helicate faces in the cuboctahedron have the same chirality (AAAA/CCCC enantiomers with T symmetry; AAAC/CCCA enantiomers with C₃ symmetry; and achiral AACC with S₄ symmetry). This mirrors the known behaviour of many simpler M₄L₆ tetrahedral cages which can likewise exist as T, C₃ or S₄ isomers according to the sense of tris-chelate chirality around each individual metal centre: but here it is translated onto a much larger scale by the four chiral units being entire trinuclear helicate faces rather than single metal centres. ¹H NMR spectroscopy confirms the presence of the three diastereoisomers with their different molecular symmetries in a ratio slightly different from what is expected on purely statistical grounds; and ¹H NMR measurements on a non-equilibrium sample (enriched by manual crystal-picking before preparing the solution) showed that the distribution does not change over several weeks in solution, indicating the kinetic inertness of the cage assemblies.

All three diastereoisomers of a cuboctahedral coordination cage containing square and triangular faces, based on different chirality of each triangular face independently, have been structurally characterised.

Synthetic strategies towards mechanically interlocked oligomers and polymers

Mechanically interlocked molecules have fascinated chemists for decades. Initially a tantalising synthetic challenge, interlocked molecules have continued to capture the imagination for their aesthetics and, increasingly, for their potential as molecular machines and use in materials applications. Whilst preliminary statistical attempts to prepare these molecules were exceedingly inefficient, a raft of template-directed strategies have now been realised, providing a vast toolbox from which chemists can access interlocked structures in excellent yields. For many envisaged applications it is desirable to move away from small, discrete interlocked molecules and turn to oligomers and polymers instead, either due to the need for multiple mechanical bonds within the desired material, or to exploit an extended scaffold for the organisation and arrangement of individual mechanically interlocked units. In this tutorial-style review we outline the synthetic strategies that have been employed for the synthesis of mechanically interlocked oligomers and polymers, including oligo-/polymerisation of (pseudo)interlocked precursors, metal-organic self-assembly, the use of orthogonal template motifs, iterative approaches and grafting onto polymer backbones.

Chiral Self-Sorting Effects in the Self-Assembly of Metallosupramolecular Aggregates Comprising Ligands Derived from Tröger's Base

Five ligands with either nitrile or isonitrile metal binding motifs have been synthesized based on the 2,8- or 3,9-disubstituted Tröger's base scaffold, respectively. These ligands self-assemble into dinuclear cyclic metallosupramolecular aggregates upon coordination to [(dppp)Pd(OTf)₂ ] in a highly diastereoselective manner, by heterochiral self-sorting in a chiral self-discriminating manner as shown by ESI mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and single crystal XRD analysis. This observation is in contrast to earlier studies with ligands derived from Tröger's base that have larger metal binding motifs and bis(nitrile) and bis(isonitrile) ligands based on other rigid dissymmetric cores such as [2.2]paracyclophanes. Thus, the combination of these slim metal binding motifs with the rigid v-shaped 2,8- or 3,9-disubstituted Tröger's base scaffolds seems to be especially well preorganized to ensure high-fidelity social self-sorting behavior.

Balancing connectivity with function in silver(i) networks of pyridyltriazole (tzpa) ligands results in the formation of a metallogel

A new flexible and divergent 1,2,3-triazol-4-yl-picolinamide (tzpa) ligand 2 and the half-equivalent model ligand 1, both functionalised with pendant 3-pyridyl groups, are reported and their coordination behaviour with silver(i) ions is explored, both in the crystalline phase and through the formation of a supramolecular metallogel. The self-assembly of tzpa ligand 1 with AgCF3SO3 resulted in the formation of a 1D coordination polymer, binding in a bidentate fashion through the pyridyl and triazole nitrogen atoms of the tzpa binding site and a pendant pyridyl nitrogen atom of an adjacent ligand. Doubling the number of metal binding sites in ligand 2, while retaining the same metal binding domain, gives rise to the formation of a supramolecular metallogel on reaction with AgBF4 at 5 wt% in MeCN, possessing self-healing properties.

Influencing the Self-Sorting Behavior of [2.2]Paracyclophane-Based Ligands by Introducing Isostructural Binding Motifs

Two isostructural ligands with either nitrile (L^nit) or isonitrile (L^iso) moieties directly connected to a [2.2]paracyclophane backbone with pseudo‐meta substitution pattern have been synthesized. The ligand itself (L^nit) or its precursors (L^iso) were resolved by HPLC on a chiral stationary phase and the absolute configuration of the isolated enantiomers was assigned by XRD analysis and/or by comparison of quantum‐chemical simulated and experimental electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. Surprisingly, the resulting metallosupramolecular aggregates formed in solution upon coordination of [(dppp)Pd(OTf)₂] differ in their composition: whereas L^nit forms dinuclear complexes, L^iso exclusively forms trinuclear ones. Furthermore, they also differ in their chiral self‐sorting behavior as (rac)‐L^iso undergoes exclusive social self‐sorting leading to a heterochiral assembly, whereas (rac)‐L^iso shows a twofold preference for the formation of homochiral complexes in a narcissistic self‐sorting manner as proven by ESI mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. Interestingly, upon crystallization, these discrete aggregates undergo structural transformation to coordination polymers, as evidenced by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction.

Selective Formation of S4- and T-Symmetric Supramolecular Tetrahedral Cages and Helicates in Polar Media Assembled via Cooperative Action of Coordination and Hydrogen Bonds

We report on the synthesis and self-assembly study of novel supramolecular monomers encompassing quadruple hydrogen-bonding motifs and metal-coordinating 2,2'-bipyridine units. When mixed with metal ions such as Fe²⁺ or Zn²⁺, the tetrahedron cage complexes are formed in quantitative yields and full diastereoselectivity, even in highly polar acetonitrile or methanol solvents. The symmetry of the complexes obtained has been shown to depend critically on the flexibility of the ligand. Restriction of the rotation of the hydrogen-bonding unit with respect to the metal-coordinating site results in a T-symmetric cage, whereas introducing flexibility either through a methylene linker or rotating benzene ring allows the formation of S₄-symmetric cages with self-filled interior. In addition, the possibility to select between tetrahedral cages or helicates and to control the dimensions of the aggregate has been demonstrated with a three-component assembly using external hydrogen-bonding molecular inserts or by varying the radius of the metal ion (Hg²⁺ vs Fe²⁺). Self-sorting studies of individual Fe²⁺ complexes with ligands of different sizes revealed their inertness toward ligand scrambling.

A new supramolecular catalytic system: the self-assembly of Rh8 cage host anthracene molecules for [4 + 4] cycloaddition induced by UV irradiation

The supramolecular assembly is significant in host–guest chemistry. In this work, a new supramolecular system assembled through a distorted cuboid was introduced. Moreover, the [4 + 4] cycloaddition reaction of the guest molecules was further studied under UV light.

Cavity-based applications of metallo-supramolecular coordination cages (MSCCs)

This review describes cavity-based applications of cage-like SCCs such as molecular recognition and separation, stabilization of reactive species by encapsulation, as drug delivery systems and as molecular flasks.

Structural and magnetic characterization of Ni(ii), Co(ii), and Fe(ii) binuclear complexes on a bis(pyridyl-triazolyl)alkane basis

Reactions of bis[5-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl]alkanes (alkane spacers = -CH2- in L2, -C3H6- in L3, -C4H8- in L4) with M(ii)A2 salts (M = Ni, Co, Fe) resulted in the preparation of five series of mononuclear ([M(L2)(H2O)2]2+, 1a-c) or binuclear ([M2(L3)2(H2O)4]4+, 2a-c; ([M2(L4)2(H2O)4]4+, 3a-c, [M2(L3)2(μ-ox)]2+, 4a-c; [M2(L4)2(μ-ox)]2+, 5a-c) complexes. The crystal structures of ten complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Magnetic properties of the compounds were characterized by SQUID magnetometry and were analyzed by fitting on a spin Hamiltonian model. It was revealed that Fe(ii) and Co(ii) compounds exhibit non-negligible anisotropy and in the case of 2a-c and 3a-c complexes weak ferromagnetic interactions between the metal centers were observed. In the case of complexes containing an {M2(μ-ox)}2+ core strong antiferromagnetic interactions were observed within the dimer. Remarkably, solid state luminescence of Co(ii) and Fe(ii) complexes (1b, 2b, 3b and 1c, 2c, 3c) was observed.

Palladium(II)-Based Self-Assembled Heteroleptic Coordination Architectures: A Growing Family

Metal-driven self-assembly is one of the most effective approaches to lucidly design a large range of discrete 2D and 3D coordination architectures/complexes. Palladium(II)-based self-assembled coordination architectures are usually prepared by using suitable metal components, in either a partially protected form (PdL') or typical form (Pd; charges are not shown), and designed ligand components. The self-assembled molecules prepared by using a metal component and only one type of bi- or polydentate ligand (L) can be classified in the homoleptic series of complexes. On the other hand, the less explored heteroleptic series of complexes are obtained by using a metal component and at least two different types of non-chelating bi- or polydentate ligands (such as L^a and L^b ). Methods that allow the controlled generation of single, discrete heteroleptic complexes are less understood. A survey of palladium(II)-based self-assembled coordination cages that are heteroleptic has been made. This review article illustrates a systematic collection of such architectures and credible justification of their formation, along with reported functional aspects of the complexes. The collected heteroleptic assemblies are classified here into three sections: 1) [(PdL')_m (L^a )_x (L^b )_y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of L^a and L^b is equal; 2) [(PdL')_m (L^a )_x (L^b )_y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of L^a and L^b is different; and 3) [Pd_m (L^a )_x (L^b )_y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of L^a and L^b is equal. Representative examples of some important homoleptic architectures are also provided, wherever possible, to set a background for a better understanding of the related heteroleptic versions. The purpose of this review is to pave the way for the construction of several unique heteroleptic coordination assemblies that might exhibit emergent supramolecular functions.

Investigation of the Anticancer Activity of Coordination-Driven Self-AssembledTwo-Dimensional Ruthenium Metalla-Rectangle

Coordination-driven self-assembly is an effective synthetic tool for the construction of spatially and electronically tunable supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs), which are useful in various applications. Herein, we report the synthesis of a two-dimensional discrete metalla-rectangle [(η6-p-cymene)4Ru4(C6H2O4)2(2)2](CF3SO3)4 (3) by the reaction of a dinuclear half-sandwich ruthenium (II) complex [Ru2(η6-p-cymene)2(C6H2O4)Cl2] (1) and bis-pyridyl amide linker (2) in the presence of AgO3SCF3. This cationic ruthenium metalla-rectangle (3) has been isolated as its triflate salt and characterized by analytical techniques including elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR), carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C-NMR), 1H-1H correlation spectroscopy (COSY), 1H-1H nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (NOESY), diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY), and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS). Significantly, the 2D cationic ruthenium metalla-rectangle showed better anticancer activity towards three different cell lines (A549, Caki-1 and Lovo) as compared with the parent ruthenium complex (1) and the commercially used drug, cisplatin.

fac-Re(CO)3-based neutral heteroleptic tetrahedrons

Four new flexible ditopic nitrogen donors possessing a xylene spacer and 2-phenylbenzimidazolyl or its derivatives as a coordinating unit and one rigid bis-chelating ligand consisting of two 2-hydroxyphenylbenzimidazolyl motifs and a central phenylene spacer were synthesized and further used with Re₂(CO)₁₀ for making a new family of neutral, heteroleptic tetrahedral-shaped supramolecular coordination complexes via a one-pot approach. The new ligands and the complexes were characterized using various analytical and spectroscopic methods. The molecular structures of the complexes were determined using single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, which reveal that four rhenium cores are arranged in the vertices, and four ligands are at the edges of the tetrahedron.

Copper(ii) self-assembled clusters of bis((pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)alkanes. Unusual rearrangement of ligands under reaction conditions

The reaction of two structurally related bridging ligands bis[5-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole-3-yl]methane (H2L1) and bis[5-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole-3-yl]ethane (H2L2) with copper(ii) salts resulted in a surprising wide variety of complex structures [Cu2(H2L1)Cl2]Cl2·4CH3OH (1), [Cu4(L1)4]·4H2O (2), [Cu(H2L2)(ClO4)2] (3) and [Cu3(OH)Na2(L')6](ClO4)·5H2O·C3H6O (4), where HL' is 3,5-bis-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole, which were structurally characterized by the X-ray diffraction method. Complexes 1 and 2 were prepared on the H2L1 basis and have binuclear and tetranuclear structures, respectively, demonstrating strong impact of the type of counter anion on the coordination mode of the ligand. In contrast, the reaction between Cu(ClO4)2 6H2O and H2L2 led to the preparation of mononuclear complex 3. The reaction of H2L2 with Cu(ClO4)2 under alkaline conditions led to oxidative rearrangement of the ligand and the homoleptic pentanuclear complex 4 with anionic ligand L' was prepared. Magnetic properties were studied for compounds 1, 2 and 4 and for all of them the antiferromagnetic interactions between the Cu atoms were confirmed and analyzed by the spin Hamiltonian formalism. Furthermore, the occurrence of the antisymmetric exchange was confirmed in 4. The magnetic data analysis was supported by the X-band EPR measurements performed for complexes 1, 2 and 4.

Coordination-driven self-assembly of M10L8 metal–organic bi-capped square antiprisms with adaptable cavities

A family of copper-imidazolate cages consisting of flexible ligands have been synthesized, featuring an unusual bicapped square antiprism structure with an adaptable cavity.
