Coordination Modes and Binding Patterns in Lanthanum Phosphoramide Complexes

A monoanionic phosphoramide ligand is introduced, which forms a series of lanthanum complexes with the ligand in both anionic and neutral forms. Stoichiometric control alone provides monometallic complexes with either two or three phosphoramide ligands. Alternatively, a combination of anionic and neutral proteo ligands featuring intramolecular hydrogen bonding can be obtained. The anionic form of the ligand binds lanthanum as a bi- or monodentate ligand, depending on the steric demand at the metal center, while the protonated ligand binds exclusively through the phosphoramide oxygen donor.

Alpha-metalated N,N-dimethylbenzylamine rare-earth metal complexes and their catalytic applications

This perspective summarizes our group's extensive research in the realm of organometallic lanthanide complexes, while also placing the catalytic reactions supported by these species within the context of known lanthanide catalysis worldwide, with a specific focus on phosphorus-based catalytic reactions such as intermolecular hydrophosphination and hydrophosphinylation. α-Metalated N,N-dimethylbenzylamine ligands have been utilized to generate homoleptic lanthanide complexes, which have subsequently proven to be highly active lanthanum-based catalysts. The main goal of our research program has been to enhance the catalytic efficiency of lanthanum-based complexes, which began with initial successes in the stoichiometric synthesis of organometallic lanthanide complexes and utilization of these species in catalytic hydrophosphination reactions. Not only have these species supported traditional lanthanide catalysis, such as the hydrophosphination of heterocumulenes like carbodiimides, isocyanates, and isothiocyanates, but they have also been effective for a plethora of catalytic reactions tested thus far, including the hydrophosphinylation and hydrophosphorylation of nitriles, hydrophosphination and hydrophosphinylation of alkynes and alkenes, and the heterodehydrocoupling of silanes and amines. Each of these catalytic transformations is meritorious in its own right, offering new synthetic routes to generate organic scaffolds with enhanced functionality while concurrently minimizing both waste generation and energy consumption. Objectives: We aim for the research summary presented herein to inspire and encourage other researchers to investigate f-element based stoichiometric and catalytic reactions. Our efforts in this field began with the recognition that potassium salts of benzyldimethylamine preferred deprotonation at the α-position, rather than the ortho-position, and we wondered if this regiochemistry would be retained in the formation of lanthanide complexes. The pursuit of this simple idea led first to a series of structurally fascinating homoleptic organometallic lanthanide complexes with surprisingly good stability. Fundamental studies of the protonolysis chemistry of these complexes ultimately revealed highly versatile lanthanide-based precatalysts that have propelled a catalytic investigation spanning more than a decade. We anticipate that this summative perspective will animate the synthetic as well as biological communities to consider La(DMBA)3-based catalytic methods in the synthesis of functionalized organic scaffolds as an atom-economic, convenient, and efficient methodology. Ultimately, we envision our work making a positive impact on the advancement of novel chemical transformations and contributing to progress in various fields of science and technology.

Dipolar Coupling as a Mechanism for Fine Control of Magnetic States in ErCOT-Alkyl Molecular Magnets

The design of molecular magnets has progressed greatly by taking advantage of the ability to impart successive perturbations and control vibronic transitions in 4fn systems through the careful manipulation of the crystal field. Herein, we control the orientation and rigidity of two dinuclear ErCOT-based molecular magnets: the inversion-symmetric bridged [ErCOT(μ-Me)(THF)]2 (2) and the nearly linear Li[(ErCOT)2(μ-Me)3] (3). The conserved anisotropy of the ErCOT synthetic unit facilitates the direction of the arrangement of its magnetic anisotropy for the purposes of generating controlled internal magnetic fields, improving control of the energetics and transition probabilities of the electronic angular momentum states with exchange biasing via dipolar coupling. This control is evidenced through the introduction of a second thermal barrier to relaxation operant at low temperatures that is twice as large in 3 as in 2. This barrier acts to suppress through-barrier relaxation by protecting the ground state from interacting with stray local fields while operating at an energy scale an order of magnitude smaller than the crystal field term. These properties are highlighted when contrasted against the mononuclear structure ErCOT(Bn)(THF)2 (1), in which quantum tunneling of the magnetization processes dominate, as demonstrated by magnetometry and ab initio computational methods. Furthermore, far-infrared magnetospectroscopy measurements reveal that the increased rigidity imparted by successive removal of solvent ligands when adding bridging methyl groups, along with the increased excited state purity, severely limits local spin-vibrational interactions that facilitate magnetic relaxation, manifesting as longer relaxation times in 3 relative to those in 2 as temperature is increased.

4f/5d Hybridization Induced Single-Electron Delocalization in an Azide-Bridged Dicerium Complex

Dilanthanide complexes with one-electron delocalization are important targets for understanding the specific 4f/5d-bonding feature in lanthanide chemistry. Here, we report an isolable azide-bridged dicerium complex 3 [{(TrapenTMS)Ce}2(μ-N3)]• [Trapen = tris (2-aminobenzyl)amine; TMS = SiMe3], which is synthesized by the reaction of tripodal ligand-supported (TrapenTMS)CeIVCl complex 2 with NaN3. The structure and bonding nature of 3 are fully characterized by X-ray crystal diffraction analysis, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), magnetic measurement, cyclic voltammetry, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and quantum-theoretical studies. Complex 3 presents a trans-bent central Ce-N3-Ce unit with a single electron of two mixed-valent Ce atoms. The unique low-temperature (2 K) anisotropic EPR signals [g = 1.135, 2.003, and 3.034] of 3 indicate that its spin density is distributed on the central Ce-N3-Ce unit with marked electron delocalization. Quantum chemical analyses show strong 4f/5d orbital mixing in the singly occupied molecular orbital of 3, which allows for the unpaired electron to extend throughout the cerium-azide-cerium unit via a multicentered one-electron (Ce-N3-Ce) interaction. This work extends the family of mixed-valent dilanthanide complexes and provides a paradigm for understanding the bonding motif of ligand-bridged dilanthanide complexes.

Role of Bis(phosphinimino)methanides as Universal Ligands in the Coordination Sphere of Metals across the Periodic Table

The coordination chemistry of bis(phosphinimino)methanide ligands is widespread and accompanies a large number of metal ions in the periodic table ranging from lithium to neptunium. This unique class of ligand systems show copious coordination chemistry with the main-group, transition, rare-earth, and actinide metals and are considered to be among the most attractive ligand systems to researchers. The bis(phosphinimino)methanide metal complexes offer an extensive range of applications in various fields and have been demonstrated as one of the universal ligand systems to stabilize the metal ions in not only their usual but also their unusual oxidation states. The main-group and transition metal chemistry using bis(phosphinimino)methanides as ligands was last updated almost a decade ago. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of various state-of-the-art bis(phosphinimino)methanide-supported metal complexes by dealing with their synthesis, characterization, reactivity, and catalytic studies which were not included in the last critical reviews.

Rare Earth Starting Materials and Methodologies for Synthetic Chemistry

The number of rare earth (RE) starting materials used in synthesis is staggering, ranging from simple binary metal-halide salts to borohydrides and "designer reagents" such as alkyl and organoaluminate complexes. This review collates the most important starting materials used in RE synthetic chemistry, including essential information on their preparations and uses in modern synthetic methodologies. The review is divided by starting material category and supporting ligands (i.e., metals as synthetic precursors, halides, borohydrides, nitrogen donors, oxygen donors, triflates, and organometallic reagents), and in each section relevant synthetic methodologies and applications are discussed.

Yttrium tris(trimethylsilylmethyl) complexes grafted onto MCM-48 mesoporous silica nanoparticles

A series of tris(trimethylsilylmethyl) yttrium donor adduct complexes was synthesized and fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, ¹H/¹³C/²⁹Si/³¹P/⁸⁹Y heteronuclear NMR and FTIR spectroscopies as well as elemental analyses. Treatment of Y(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(thf)_x with various donors Do led to complete (Do = TMEDA, DMAP) and partial displacement of THF (Do = NHC^iPr, DMPE). Exceptionally large ⁸⁹Y NMR shifts to low field were observed for the new complexes. Complexes Y(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(tmeda) and Y(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(dmpe)(thf) were chosen to perform surface organometallic chemistry, due to a comparatively higher thermal stability and the availability of the ³¹P nucleus as a spectroscopic probe, respectively. Mesoporous nanoparticles of the MCM-48-type were synthesized and used as a 3^rd generation silica support. The parent and hybrid materials were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction, solid-state-NMR spectroscopy, DRIFTS, elemental analyses, N₂-physisorption, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The presence of surface-bound yttrium alkyl moieties was further proven by the reaction with carbon dioxide. Quantification of the surface silanol population by means of HN(SiHMe₂)₂-promoted surface silylation is shown to be superior to titration with lithium alkyl LiCH₂SiMe₃.

CeCl3 /n-BuLi: Unraveling Imamoto's Organocerium Reagent

CeCl₃(thf) reacts at low temperatures with MeLi, t‐BuLi, and n‐BuLi to isolable organocerium complexes. Solvent‐dependent extensive n‐BuLi dissociation is revealed by ⁷Li NMR spectroscopy, suggesting “Ce(n‐Bu)₃(thf)_x” or solvent‐separated ion pairs like “[Li(thf)₄][Ce(n‐Bu)₄(thf)_y]” as the dominant species of the Imamoto reagent. The stability of complexes Li₃Ln(n‐Bu)₆(thf)₄ increases markedly with decreasing Ln^III size. Closer inspection of the solution behavior of crystalline Li₃Lu(n‐Bu)₆(thf)₄ and mixtures of LuCl₃(thf)₂/n‐BuLi in THF indicates occurring n‐BuLi dissociation only at molar ratios of <1:3. n‐BuLi‐depleted complex LiLu(n‐Bu)₃Cl(tmeda)₂ was obtained by treatment of Li₂Lu(n‐Bu)₅(tmeda)₂ with ClSiMe₃, at the expense of LiCl incorporation. Imamoto's ketone/tertiary alcohol transformation was examined with 1,3‐diphenylpropan‐2‐one, affording 99 % of alcohol.

Ln(ii) alkyl complexes: from elusive exotics to catalytic applications

The synthesis, structures and reactivity of isolable Ln^II (Ln = Sm, Eu, Yb) alkyl complexes are discussed. The application of Ln^II alkyl derivatives in a variety of catalytic reactions is considered as well.

Yttrium and lanthanum bis(phosphine-oxide)methanides: structurally diverse, dynamic, and reactive

Homoleptic yttrium and lanthanum complexes of bis(phosphineoxide) methanides, RE(HPhL)3 and RE2(HMeL)6, promote the first rare-earth mediated Horner-Wittig and acid-base chemistry consistent with multifunctional reactivity (Lewis-acid/Brønstedbase).

Cerium-carbon dative interactions supported by carbodiphosphorane

A set of complexes containing dative interactions between a rare-earth metal and carbon are reported. Complex 2, Br₃Ce(CDP)(THF), with a Ce←C bond was synthesized by the reaction of CeBr₃ with a carbon(0) ligand, carbodiphosphorane (CDP). More significantly, a trivalent cerium complex 3, [BrCe(CDP)₂](BPh₄)₂, with two σ dative interactions C→Ce←C was also isolated, which represents an unusual example of two dative interactions formed with the same atom in a molecule. Furthermore, π donation by the second lone-pair electrons of the CDP ligand is rather weak. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the Ce-C bond lengths in these complexes are comparable with those in cerium(iii)-carbene species. Density functional theory calculations support the dative interaction formation in these complexes and the strength of σ-donation in 3 is stronger than that in 2.

Geminal Dianions Stabilized by Main Group Elements

This review is dedicated to the chemistry of stable and isolable species that bear two lone pairs at the same C center, i.e., geminal dianions, stabilized by main group elements. Three cases can thus be considered: the geminal-dilithio derivative, for which the two substituents at C are neutral, the yldiide derivatives, for which one substituent is neutral while the other is charged, and finally the geminal bisylides, for which the two substituents are positively charged. In this review, the syntheses and electronic structures of the geminal dianions are presented, followed by the studies dedicated to their reactivity toward organic substrates and finally to their coordination chemistry and applications.

Diethyl ether adducts of trivalent lanthanide iodides

The synthesis and structural characterization of molecular complexes of lanthanide iodides supported by the weak-base, diethyl ether, are reported.

Synthesis of homometallic divalent lanthanide organoimides from benzyl complexes

The reaction of LnI2(thf)2 with benzyl potassium affords the homoleptic benzyl complexes [Ln(CH2Ph)2]n of samarium, europium, and ytterbium. In the cases of Eu and Yb, the treatment of [Ln(CH2Ph)2]n with one equivalent of 2,6-diisopropylaniline gives access to tetrameric organoimide complexes [(thf)Ln(μ3-NDipp)]4, representing the first examples of homometallic Ln(ii) imides. This study revealed that the Yb(ii) organoimide chemistry is significantly different from that of calcium.

Crystal structure of tri-benzyl-bis-(tetra-hydro-furan-κO)lutetium(III)

In the title compound, [Lu(C7H7)3(C4H8O)2] (1), the Lu ion is coordinated by three benzyl and two tetra-hydro-furan ligands. Two of the benzyl groups are bonded in a classical η1-fashion through the methyl-ene via the ipso-carbon atom of the benzyl ligand in addition to bonding through the methyl-ene C atom, resulting in a modified trigonal-bipyramidal coordination geometry about the Lu center.

Homoleptic Trivalent Tris(alkyl) Rare Earth Compounds

Homoleptic tris(alkyl) rare earth complexes Ln{C(SiHMe₂)₃}₃ (Ln = La, 1a; Ce, 1b; Pr, 1c; Nd, 1d) are synthesized in high yield from LnI₃THF_n and 3 equiv of KC(SiHMe₂)₃. X-ray diffraction studies reveal 1a-d are isostructural, pseudo-C₃-symmetric molecules that contain two secondary Ln↼HSi interactions per alkyl ligand (six total). Spectroscopic assignments are supported by comparison with Ln{C(SiDMe₂)₃}₃ and DFT calculations. The Ln↼HSi and terminal SiH exchange rapidly on the NMR time scale at room temperature, but the two motifs are resolved at low temperature. Variable-temperature NMR studies provide activation parameters for the exchange process in 1a (ΔH^⧧ = 8.2(4) kcal·mol^-1; ΔS^⧧ = -1(2) cal·mol^-1K^-1) and 1a-d₉ (ΔH^⧧ = 7.7(3) kcal·mol^-1; ΔS^⧧ = -4(2) cal·mol^-1K^-1). Comparisons of lineshapes, rate constants (k_H/k_D), and slopes of ln(k/T) vs 1/T plots for 1a and 1a-d₉ reveal that an inverse isotope effect dominates at low temperature. DFT calculations identify four low-energy intermediates containing five β-Si-H⇀Ln and one γ-C-H⇀Ln. The calculations also suggest the pathway for Ln↼HSi/SiH exchange involves rotation of a single C(SiHMe₂)₃ ligand that is coordinated to the Ln center through the Ln-C bond and one secondary interaction. These robust organometallic compounds persist in solution and in the solid state up to 80 °C, providing potential for their use in a range of synthetic applications. For example, reactions of Ln{C(SiHMe₂)₃}₃ and ancillary proligands, such as bis-1,1-(4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolinyl)ethane (HMeC(Ox^Me2)₂) give {MeC(Ox^Me2)₂}Ln{C(SiHMe₂)₃}₂, and reactions with disilazanes provide solvent-free lanthanoid tris(disilazides).

The inverse-trans-influence in tetravalent lanthanide and actinide bis(carbene) complexes

Across the periodic table the trans-influence operates, whereby tightly bonded ligands selectively lengthen mutually trans metal-ligand bonds. Conversely, in high oxidation state actinide complexes the inverse-trans-influence operates, where normally cis strongly donating ligands instead reside trans and actually reinforce each other. However, because the inverse-trans-influence is restricted to high-valent actinyls and a few uranium(V/VI) complexes, it has had limited scope in an area with few unifying rules. Here we report tetravalent cerium, uranium and thorium bis(carbene) complexes with trans C=M=C cores where experimental and theoretical data suggest the presence of an inverse-trans-influence. Studies of hypothetical praseodymium(IV) and terbium(IV) analogues suggest the inverse-trans-influence may extend to these ions but it also diminishes significantly as the 4f orbitals are populated. This work suggests that the inverse-trans-influence may occur beyond high oxidation state 5f metals and hence could encompass mid-range oxidation state actinides and lanthanides. Thus, the inverse-trans-influence might be a more general f-block principle.

Homoleptic organolanthanide compounds supported by the bis(dimethylsilyl)benzyl ligand

A β-SiH functionalized benzyl anion [C(SiHMe₂)₂Ph]⁻ reacts with early rare earth halides to provide homoleptic tris(alkyl)lanthanides containing secondary interactions in an efficient and high yielding route.

A monometallic lanthanide bis(methanediide) single molecule magnet with a large energy barrier and complex spin relaxation behaviour

We report a dysprosium(iii) bis(methanediide) single molecule magnet (SMM) where stabilisation of the highly magnetic states and suppression of mixing of opposite magnetic projections is imposed by a linear arrangement of negatively-charged donor atoms supported by weak neutral donors. Treatment of [Ln(BIPMTMS)(BIPMTMSH)] [Ln = Dy, 1Dy; Y, 1Y; BIPMTMS = {C(PPh2NSiMe3)2}2-; BIPMTMSH = {HC(PPh2NSiMe3)2}-] with benzyl potassium/18-crown-6 ether (18C6) in THF afforded [Ln(BIPMTMS)2][K(18C6)(THF)2] [Ln = Dy, 2Dy; Y, 2Y]. AC magnetic measurements of 2Dy in zero DC field show temperature- and frequency-dependent SMM behaviour. Orbach relaxation dominates at high temperature, but at lower temperatures a second-order Raman process dominates. Complex 2Dy exhibits two thermally activated energy barriers (U eff) of 721 and 813 K, the largest U eff values for any monometallic dysprosium(iii) complex. Dilution experiments confirm the molecular origin of this phenomenon. Complex 2Dy has rich magnetic dynamics; field-cooled (FC)/zero-field cooled (ZFC) susceptibility measurements show a clear divergence at 16 K, meaning the magnetic observables are out-of-equilibrium below this temperature, however the maximum in ZFC, which conventionally defines the blocking temperature, T B, is found at 10 K. Magnetic hysteresis is also observed in 10% 2Dy@2Y at these temperatures. Ab initio calculations suggest the lowest three Kramers doublets of the ground 6H15/2 multiplet of 2Dy are essentially pure, well-isolated |±15/2, |±13/2 and |±11/2 states quantised along the C[double bond, length as m-dash]Dy[double bond, length as m-dash]C axis. Thermal relaxation occurs via the 4th and 5th doublets, verified experimentally for the first time, and calculated U eff values of 742 and 810 K compare very well to experimental magnetism and luminescence data. This work validates a design strategy towards realising high-temperature SMMs and produces unusual spin relaxation behaviour where the magnetic observables are out-of-equilibrium some 6 K above the formal blocking temperature.

Reactivity of the uranium(IV) carbene complex [U(BIPM(TMS))(Cl)(μ-Cl)₂Li(THF)₂] (BIPM(TMS) = {C(PPh₂NSiMe₃)₂}) towards carbonyl and heteroallene substrates: metallo-Wittig, adduct formation, C-F bond activation, and [2 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions

The reactivity of the uranium(IV) carbene complex [U(BIPM(TMS))(Cl)(μ-Cl)2Li(THF)2] (1, BIPM(TMS) = {C(PPh2NSiMe3)2}) towards carbonyl and heteroallene substrates is reported. Reaction of 1 with benzophenone proceeds to give the metallo-Wittig terminal alkene product Ph2C=C(PPh2NSiMe3)2 (2); the likely "UOCl2" byproduct could not be isolated. Addition of the bulky ketone PhCOBu(t) to 1 resulted in loss of LiCl, coordination of the ketone, and dimerisation to give [U(BIPM(TMS))(Cl)(μ-Cl){OC(Ph)(Bu(t))}]2 (3). The reaction of 1 with coumarin resulted in ring opening of the cyclic ester and a metallo-Wittig-type reaction to afford [U{BIPM(TMS)[C(O)(CHCHC6H4O-2)]-κ(3)-N,O,O'}(Cl)2(THF)] (4) where the enolate product remains coordinated to uranium. The reaction of PhCOF with 1 resulted in C-F bond activation and oxidation resulting in isolation of [U(O)2(Cl)2(μ-Cl)2{(μ-LiDME)OC(Ph)=C(PPh2NSiMe3)(PPh2NHSiMe3)}2] (5) along with [U(Cl)2(F)2(py)4] (6). The reactions of 1 with tert-butylisocyanate or dicyclohexylcarbodiimide resulted in the isolation of the [2 + 2]-cycloaddition products [U{BIPM(TMS)[C(NBu(t)){OLi(THF)2(μ-Cl)Li(THF)3}]-κ(4)-C,N,N',N''}(Cl)3] (7) and [U{BIPM(TMS)[C(NCy)2]-κ(4)-C,N,N',N''}(Cl)(μ-Cl)2Li(THF)2] (8). Complexes 2-8 have been variously characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction, multi-nuclear NMR and FTIR spectroscopies, Evans method solution magnetic moments, variable temperature SQUID magnetometry, and elemental analyses.

A structural investigation of heteroleptic lanthanide substituted cyclopentadienyl complexes

The synthesis and structural authentication of novel heteroleptic lanthanide complexes supported by bulky cyclopentadienyl ligands is herein presented. Steric effects play a fundamental role in the coordination motifs.

In situ synthesis of lanthanide complexes supported by a ferrocene diamide ligand: extension to redox-active lanthanide ions

The scope of an in situ method to prepare rare-earth alkyl and halide precursors was extended to cerium, praseodymium, samarium, terbium, thulium, and ytterbium.
