Effect of the heteroatom on the magnetic and luminescence properties of hybrid lanthanide-substituted Keggin-type polyoxometalates

Replacement of the heteroatom from Si to Ge has a strong influence on the luminescence properties of a series of hybrid, sandwich-type K5[Ln(α-GeW11O39)(C20H22Br2N2O4)]·14H2O (1Ge-Ln, Ln = Sm to Lu) anions. Interestingly, the Gd and Yb derivatives retain their ability to display slow relaxation of magnetisation.

Application of Nanoparticles in Cancer Treatment: A Concise Review

Timely diagnosis and appropriate antitumoral treatments remain of utmost importance, since cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide. Within this context, nanotechnology offers specific benefits in terms of cancer therapy by reducing its adverse effects and guiding drugs to selectively target cancer cells. In this comprehensive review, we have summarized the most relevant novel outcomes in the range of 2010-2023, covering the design and application of nanosystems for cancer therapy. We have established the general requirements for nanoparticles to be used in drug delivery and strategies for their uptake in tumor microenvironment and vasculature, including the reticuloendothelial system uptake and surface functionalization with protein corona. After a brief review of the classes of nanovectors, we have covered different classes of nanoparticles used in cancer therapies. First, the advances in the encapsulation of drugs (such as paclitaxel and fisetin) into nanoliposomes and nanoemulsions are described, as well as their relevance in current clinical trials. Then, polymeric nanoparticles are presented, namely the ones comprising poly lactic-co-glycolic acid, polyethylene glycol (and PEG dilemma) and dendrimers. The relevance of quantum dots in bioimaging is also covered, namely the systems with zinc sulfide and indium phosphide. Afterwards, we have reviewed gold nanoparticles (spheres and anisotropic) and their application in plasmon-induced photothermal therapy. The clinical relevance of iron oxide nanoparticles, such as magnetite and maghemite, has been analyzed in different fields, namely for magnetic resonance imaging, immunotherapy, hyperthermia, and drug delivery. Lastly, we have covered the recent advances in the systems using carbon nanomaterials, namely graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, and carbon dots. Finally, we have compared the strategies of passive and active targeting of nanoparticles and their relevance in cancer theranostics. This review aims to be a (nano)mark on the ongoing journey towards realizing the remarkable potential of different nanoparticles in the realm of cancer therapeutics.

Silica-Based Materials Containing Inorganic Red/NIR Emitters and Their Application in Biomedicine

The low absorption of biological substances and living tissues in the red/near-infrared region (therapeutic window) makes luminophores emitting in the range of ~650-1350 nm favorable for in vitro and in vivo imaging. In contrast to commonly used organic dyes, inorganic red/NIR emitters, including ruthenium complexes, quantum dots, lanthanide compounds, and octahedral cluster complexes of molybdenum and tungsten, not only exhibit excellent emission in the desired region but also possess additional functional properties, such as photosensitization of the singlet oxygen generation process, upconversion luminescence, photoactivated effects, and so on. However, despite their outstanding functional applicability, they share the same drawback-instability in aqueous media under physiological conditions, especially without additional modifications. One of the most effective and thus widely used types of modification is incorporation into silica, which is (1) easy to obtain, (2) biocompatible, and (3) non-toxic. In addition, the variety of morphological characteristics, along with simple surface modification, provides room for creativity in the development of various multifunctional diagnostic/therapeutic platforms. In this review, we have highlighted biomedical applications of silica-based materials containing red/NIR-emitting compounds.

Lindqvist@Nanoporous MOF-Based Catalyst for Effective Desulfurization of Fuels

An effective and sustainable oxidative desulfurization process for treating a multicomponent model fuel was successfully developed using as a heterogeneous catalyst a composite material containing as an active center the europium Lindqvist [Eu(W5O18)2]9- (abbreviated as EuW10) encapsulated into the nanoporous ZIF-8 (zeolitic imidazolate framework) support. The EuW10@ZIF-8 composite was obtained through an impregnation procedure, and its successful preparation was confirmed by various characterization techniques (FT-IR, XRD, SEM/EDS, ICP-OES). The catalytic activity of the composite and the isolated EuW10 was evaluated in the desulfurization of a multicomponent model fuel containing dibenzothiophene derivatives (DBT, 4-MDBT and 4,6-DMDBT) with a total sulfur concentration of 1500 ppm. Oxidative desulfurization was performed using an ionic liquid as extraction solvent and aqueous hydrogen peroxide as oxidant. The catalytic results showed a remarkable desulfurization performance, with 99.5 and 94.7% sulfur removal in the first 180 min, for the homogeneous active center EuW10 and the heterogeneous EuW10@ZIF-8 catalysts, respectively. Furthermore, the stability of the nanocomposite catalyst was investigated by reusing and recycling processes. A superior retention of catalyst activity in consecutive desulfurization cycles was observed in the recycling studies when compared with the reusing experiments. Nevertheless, the nanostructure of ZIF-8 incorporating the active POM (polyoxometalate) was shown to be highly suitable for guaranteeing the absence of POM leaching, although structural modification was found for ZIF-8 after catalytic use that did not influenced catalytic performance.

Lindqvist versus Keggin-Type Polyoxometalates as Catalysts for Effective Desulfurization of Fuels

A correlation between polyoxotungstate structures and their catalytic performance for oxidative desulfurization processes was investigated. Bridged lanthanopolyoxometalates that incorporate identical metallic centers with Keggin- Eu[PW11O39]11− and Lindqvist-type [Eu(W5O18)2]9− structures were used as catalysts for the oxidation of the most representative refractory sulfur compounds. Both compounds were able to desulfurize a multicomponent model diesel under sustainable conditions, i.e., using ionic liquid as an extraction solvent and hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant. However, the Lindqvist catalyst appeared to achieve complete desulfurization faster than the Keggin catalyst while using a lesser amount of catalyst and oxidant. Furthermore, the reusable capacity of the Lindqvist-type [Eu(W5O18)2]9− was confirmed for consecutive oxidative desulfurization processes. The contribution of the lanthanide metallic center for the catalytic performance of these compounds was investigated by studying the analogous [TB(W5O18)2]9− compound. Identical desulfurization efficiency was obtained, even reusing this catalyst in consecutive reaction cycles. These results indicate that the active catalytic center of these compounds is probably related to the octahedral tungsten centers. However, a higher number of tungsten centers in the polyoxometalate structure did not result in higher catalytic activity.

Slow Magnetic Relaxation and Luminescent Properties of Mononuclear Lanthanide-Substituted Keggin-Type Polyoxotungstates with Compartmental Organic Ligands

The reaction of mid to late lanthanide ions with the N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-bis(2-hydroxy-3-formyl-5-bromobenzyl)ethylene-diamine organic ligand and monolacunary Keggin type [α-SiW₁₁O₃₉]^8– anion affords a series of isostructural compounds, namely, K₅[Ln^III(α-SiW₁₁O₃₉)(C₂₀H₂₂Br₂N₂O₄)]·14H₂O (1-Ln, Ln = Sm to Lu). The molecular structure of these sandwich-type complexes is formed by the Ln^III ion in a biaugmented trigonal prismatic geometry, which occupies the external O₄ site of the organic ligand and the vacant site of the lacunary polyoxometalate (POM) unit. The empty N₂O₂ coordination site of the organic ligand allows its unprecedented folding, which displays a relative perpendicular arrangement of aromatic groups. Weak Br···Br and π–π interactions established between adjacent molecular units govern the crystal packing, which results in the formation of assemblies containing six hybrid species assembled in a chairlike conformation. 1-Gd and 1-Yb display slow relaxation of the magnetization after the application of an external magnetic field with maxima in the out-of-phase magnetic susceptibility plots below ∼5–6 K, which is ascribed to the presence of various relaxation mechanisms. Moreover, photoluminescent emission is sensitized for 1-Sm and 1-Eu in the visible region and 1-Er and 1-Yb in the NIR. In contrast, the quenching of metal-centered luminescence in the 1-Tb derivative has been attributed to the out-of-pocket coordination mode of the lanthanide center within the POM fragment. It is demonstrated that the 1-Yb dual magneto-luminescent material represents the first lanthanide-containing POM reported to date with simultaneous slow magnetic relaxation and NIR emission. Solution stability of the hybrid molecular species in water is also confirmed by ESI-mass spectrometry experiments carried out for 1-Tb and 1-Tm.

A series of solution stable, molecular polyoxometalate hybrids, namely, [α-SiW₁₁O₃₉Ln^III(C₂₀H₂₂N₂Br₂O₄)]⁵⁻ (Ln^III = Sm to Lu) have been synthesized from the combination of mid-to-late lanthanides, lacunary Keggin-type anions, and a compartmental organic ligand. Metal-centered luminescence in both the visible and NIR region as well as slow relaxation of magnetization was found for different members of this family, including the Yb derivative, which represents the first POM-based system with slow magnetic relaxation and sensitized emission in the NIR region.

Assembly of Lanthanide-Containing Tungstotellurates(VI): Syntheses, Structures, and Catalytic Properties

Lanthanide (Ln)-containing polyoxometalates (POMs) have attracted particular attention owing to their structural diversity and potential applications in luminescence, magnetism, and catalysis. Herein three types of Ln-containing tungstotellurates(VI) (Ln = Dy³⁺, Ho³⁺, Er³⁺, Tm³⁺, Yb³⁺, and Lu³⁺), dimeric (DMAH)_n[H_22−n{Ln(H₂O)₃[TeW₁₇O₆₁]}₂]^·mH₂O (abbreviated as {Ln₂Te₂W₃₄}; DMAH⁺ = dimethylammonium), mono-substituted (DMAH)₇Na₂{H₂Ln(H₂O)₄[TeW₁₇O₆₁]}^·mH₂O (abbreviated as {LnTeW₁₇}), and three-dimensional (3D) inorganic frameworks (DMAH)_n{H_3−nLn(H₂O)₄[TeW₆O₂₄]}^·mH₂O (abbreviated as {LnTeW₆}), have been synthesized by using simple metal salts and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and other routine techniques. Interestingly, the assembly of these POMs is pH dependent. Using the same starting materials, {Ln₂Te₂W₃₄} were obtained at pH 1.7, where two Dawson-like monovacant [TeW₁₇O₆₁]¹⁴⁻ are linked by two Ln³⁺ ions; mono-substituted Dawson-like {LnTeW₁₇} were isolated at pH 1.9, and 3D inorganic framework {LnTeW₆} based on Anderson-type [TeW₆O₂₄]⁶⁻ were formed at pH 2.3. It was also found that the assembly of Ln-containing POMs depends on the type of Ln³⁺ ions. The three types of POMs can be prepared by using Ln³⁺ ions with a relatively smaller ionic radius, such as Tb³⁺-Lu³⁺, while the use of Ln³⁺ ions (La³⁺-Eu³⁺) results in the formation of precipitation or {TeW₁₈O₆₂} clusters. Furthermore, three {LnTeW₆} (Ln = Tb³⁺, Er³⁺, Lu³⁺) were used as Lewis acid catalysts for the cyanosilylation of benzaldehydes, and their catalytic activity decreases with the decrease of Ln³⁺ ionic radius, giving the order: {TbTeW₆} > {ErTeW₆} > {LuTeW₆}. Notably, {TbTeW₆} is stable to leaching and can be reused for five cycles without a significant loss of its activity.

Regulating structural dimensionality and emission colors by organic conjugation between SmIII at a fixed distance

The conjugation of bridging bis(diphenylphosphine oxide) alkane or arene ligands was found to control the structural dimensionality and the emission color of complexes from reactions with SmIII(hfac)3(H2O)2 (hfac- = hexafluoroacetylacetonato) while retaining the SmSm distances. Bis(diphenylphosphine oxide)-1,4-butane (L1) affords a one-dimensional (1D) ribbon {Sm(hfac)3(L1)}∞ (1) that emits red color, while bis(diphenyl-phosphinoyl)-1,4-benzene (L2) results in a two-dimensional (2D) network {Sm(hfac)2(CF3COO)(L2)3}∞ (2) and near-white emission, but bis(diphenyl-phosphinoyl)-9,10-anthracene (L3) forms a zero-dimensional (0D) cyclic structure {Sm(hfac)3(L3)}2 (3) with strong ππ interactions that emit green color. Noticeably, the conjugation change is accompanied by a configurational change of coordination from trans for 1 and 2 to cis for 3. The color change is associated with the superposition of ligand and Sm based electronic band energies and their intensities. Such white light emission by a single compound having contributions from different building components is quite rare.

Nano-assemblies of cationic mPEG brush block copolymers with gadolinium polyoxotungstate [Gd(W5O18)2]9- form stable, high relaxivity MRI contrast agents

Polyoxometalates (POMs) incorporating paramagnetic ions, such as gadolinium, show promise as contrast agents for application in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Specifically, [Gd(W5O18)2]9- (denoted as GdWO) has been reported to have a higher relaxivity than commercially available contrast agents, but it's clinical utility has been limited by the intrinsic instability of POMs at physiological pH (7.4). In the current report we present a stability study on neat GdWO and nano-assemblies of block copolymers with GdWO in the pH range 5.0-7.4 to assess their suitability as MRI contrast agents. Neat GdWO only maintained structural stability between pH 5.4 and 6.4, and demonstrated poor MRI contrast at pH 7.4. To address this pH instability, GdWO was self-assembled with cationic mPEG brush block copolymers containing 20 or 40 units derived from the cationic monomer, 2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA). Nano-assemblies with different charge ratios were synthesised and characterised according to their size, stability, contrasting properties and toxicity. The longitudinal relaxivity (r1) of the nano-assemblies was found to be dependent on the charge ratio, but not on the length of the cationic polymer block. Further investigation of PDMAEMA20 nano-assemblies demonstrated that they were stable over the pH range 5.0-7.4, exhibiting a higher r1 than either neat GdWO (2.77 s-1 mM-1) or clinical MRI contrast agent Gd-DTPA (4.1 s-1 mM-1) at pH 7.4. Importantly, the nano-assembly with the lowest charge ratio (0.2), showed the highest r1 (12.1 s-1 mM-1) whilst, stabilising GdWO over the pH range studied, eliciting low toxicity with MDA-MB231 cells.

Ce(iii)-Containing tungstotellurate(vi) with a sandwich structure: an efficient Lewis acid–base catalyst for the condensation cyclization of 1,3-diketones with hydrazines/hydrazides or diamines

A new Ce³⁺ modified Dawson-like polyoxometalate cluster was synthesized, which showed good Lewis acid and Lewis base activities in the condensation reaction.

Synthesis, cytotoxicity and antitumour mechanism investigations of polyoxometalate doped silica nanospheres on breast cancer MCF-7 cells

Polyoxometalates (POMs) have shown the potential anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-tumor activities. In order to improve their physiological stability and antitumour activity for medical application, K2Na[AsIIIMo6O21(O2CCH2NH3)3]·6H2O doped silica nanospheres (POM@SiO2) with diameters of ~40 nm have been synthesized by the water-in-oil microemulsion method in this study. The obtained spheres were morphologically uniform nanosized and nearly monodispersed in solution. The nanoparticles had high entrapment efficiency, which was upto 46.2% by the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis and POMs slowly released from the nanospheres both in the PH 7.4 and 5.5 phosphate buffer saline (PBS) solutions in 60 h. The in vitro MTT assays of particles on MCF-7 cell line (a human breast adenocarcinoma cell line) exhibited enhanced antitumor activity compared to that of plain polyoxometalate. The IC50 value of the POM@SiO2 nanoparticles was 40.0 μg/mL at 24 h calculated by the encapsulated POM concentration, which was much lower comparing to that of 2.0 × 104 μg/mL according to the pure POM. And the SiO2 shells showed low inhibitory effect at the corresponding concentration. Confocal images further indicated the cell morphology changes and necrosis. Flow cytometric analysis showed nanoparticles induced the apoptosis by arresting the cells in S phase and western blot analysis indicated they promoted apoptosis by inhibiting the Bcl-2 protein. Moreover, the study of interactions between human serum albumin (HSA) and the nanoparticles indicated the fluorescence quenching was static, and the nanoparticles were likely to bind to HSA and changed its conformation.

White-light emitting materials with tunable luminescence based on steady Eu(iii) doping of Tb(iii) metal–organic frameworks

White-light emission materials were successfully acquired based on a sequence of isostructural co-doped lanthanide coordination polymers [Eu_xTb_1−x(Hbtca)(phen)] (0 ≤ x ≤ 1).

Lanthano phosphomolybdate-decorated silica nanoparticles: novel hybrid materials with photochromic properties

Novel hybrid nanomaterials prepared through the immobilization of phosphomolybdates onto functional silica nanoparticles revealed promising photochromic properties under UV irradiation.

Core/shell nanoparticles in biomedical applications

Nanoparticles have several exciting applications in different areas and biomedial field is not an exception of that because of their exciting performance in bioimaging, targeted drug and gene delivery, sensors, and so on. It has been found that among several classes of nanoparticles core/shell is most promising for different biomedical applications because of several advantages over simple nanoparticles. This review highlights the development of core/shell nanoparticles-based biomedical research during approximately past two decades. Applications of different types of core/shell nanoparticles are classified in terms of five major aspects such as bioimaging, biosensor, targeted drug delivery, DNA/RNA interaction, and targeted gene delivery.

Silica-based nanocomposites via reverse microemulsions: classifications, preparations, and applications

Silica-based nanocomposites with amorphous silica as the matrix or carrier along with a functional component have been extensively investigated. These nanocomposites combine the advantages of both silica and the functional components, demonstrating great potential for various applications. To synthesize such composites, one of the most frequently used methods is reverse microemulsion due to its convenient control over the size, shape, and structures. The structures of the composites have a decisive significance for their properties and applications. In this review, we tried to categorize the silica-based nanocomposites via reverse microemulsions based on their structures, discussed the syntheses individually for each structure, summarized their applications, and made some perspectives based on the current progress of this field.

Towards full-color-tunable emission of two component Eu(iii)-doped Gd(iii) coordination frameworks by the variation of excitation light

Eu(iii)-doped Gd(iii) pyrazine-2,3,5,6-tetracarboxylate alkali–lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (LnMOF) with a unique (4¹¹·6⁸·8²)(4³·6²·8)(4³) topology present full color-tunable luminescence and white emission by the variation of excitation wavelengths.
