Supramolecular Binding of Phosphonate Dianions by Nanojars and Nanojar Clamshells

Despite the widespread use of phosphonates (RPO32-) in various agricultural, industrial, and household applications and the ensuing eutrophication of polluted water bodies, the capture of phosphonate ions by molecular receptors has been scarcely studied. Herein, we describe a novel approach to phosphonate binding using chemically and thermally robust supramolecular coordination assemblies of the formula [RPO3⊂{cis-CuII(μ-OH)(μ-pz)}n]2- (Cun; n = 27-31; pz = pyrazolate ion, C3H3N2-; R = aliphatic or aromatic group). The neutral receptors, termed nanojars, strongly bind phosphonate anions by a multitude of hydrogen bonds within their highly hydrophilic cavities. These nanojars can be synthesized either directly from their constituents or by depolymerization of [trans-CuII(μ-OH)(μ-pz)]∞ induced by phosphonate anions. Electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry, UV-vis and variable-temperature, paramagnetic 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, along with chemical stability studies toward NH3 and Ba2+ ions, and thermal stability studies in solution are employed to explore the binding of various phosphonate ions by nanojars. Crystallographic studies of 12 different nanojars offer unprecedented structural characterization of host-guest complexes with doubly charged RPO32- ions and reveal a new motif in nanojar chemistry, nanojar clamshells, which consist of phosphonate anion-bridged pairs of nanojars and double the phosphonate-binding capacity of nanojars.

MgO-modified biochar by modifying hydroxyl and amino groups for selective phosphate removal: Insight into phosphate selectivity adsorption mechanism through experimental and theoretical

Metal oxides-modified biochars have been widely studied as promising adsorbents for removing phosphate from wastewater discharge. Yet, the low adsorption selectivity towards phosphate severely limits its potential in practical applications. In this study, MgO-modified biochar modified by hydroxyl and amino groups (OH/NH2@MBC) is developed for selective phosphorus recovery from wastewater. As major results, the OH/NH2@MBC exhibits favorable phosphate adsorption performance is superior to that of MBC resin in the presence of co-existing anions (NO3-, Cl-, HCO3- and SO42-) and natural organic matter (humic acid) even actual wastewater, suggesting its superior selectivity towards phosphate. The OH/NH2@MBC shows an excellent phosphate adsorption capacity (43.27 mg/g) and desorption ratio (82.34 %) after five cycles under the condition of anion coexistence (100 mg/L). The experimental and DFT theoretical study reveals that attaching hydroxyl and amino groups onto the MBC surface, which facilitates to inhibiting the side effects of anions (NO3-, Cl-, HCO3-, and SO42-) through Lewis acid-base sites, hydrogen bonds, and metal affinity, and preferentially select adsorption P, contributing greatly to improve phosphate adsorption selectivity. Importantly, the presence of amino and hydroxyl groups can reduce the Fermi level of OH/NH2@MgO(220) and OH/NH2@MgO(200) and improve the adsorption selection for HPO42-. This study provides an effective strategy for enhancing the adsorption selectivity of metal oxides-modified biochars towards phosphate through modifying functional groups.

Infrared Ion Spectroscopic Characterization of the Gaseous [Co(15-crown-5)(H2O)]2+ Complex

We report fingerprint infrared multiple-photon dissociation spectra of the gaseous monohydrated coordination complex of cobalt(II) and the macrocycle 1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxacyclopentadecane (or 15-crown-5), [Co(15-crown-5)(H2O)]2+. The metal-ligand complexes are generated using electrospray ionization, and their IR action spectra are recorded in a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer using the free-electron laser FELIX. The electronic structure and chelation motif are derived from spectral comparison with computed vibrational spectra obtained at the density functional theory level. We focus here on the gas-phase structure, addressing the question of doublet versus quartet spin multiplicity and the chelation geometry. We conclude that the gas-phase complex adopts a quartet spin state, excluding contributions of doublet species, and that the chelation geometry is pseudo-octahedral with the six oxygen centers of 15-crown-5 and H2O coordinated to the metal ion. We also address the possible presence of higher-energy conformers based on the IR spectral evidence and calculated thermodynamics.

Pyrene-Containing Polyamines as Fluorescent Receptors for Recognition of PFOA in Aqueous Media

The globally widespread perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a concerning environmental contaminant, with a possible toxic long-term effects on the environment and human health The development of sensible, rapid, and low-cost detection systems is a current change in modern environmental chemistry. In this context, two triamine-based chemosensors, L1 and L2, containing a fluorescent pyrene unit, and their Zn(II) complexes are proposed as fluorescent probes for the detection of PFOA in aqueous media. Binding studies carried out by means of fluorescence and NMR titrations highlight that protonated forms of the receptors can interact with the carboxylate group of PFOA, thanks to salt bridge formation with the ammonium groups of the aliphatic chain. This interaction induces a decrease in the fluorescence emission of pyrene at neutral and slightly acidic pH values. Similarly, emission quenching has also been observed upon coordination of PFOA by the Zn(II) complexes of the receptors. These results evidence that simple polyamine-based molecular receptors can be employed for the optical recognition of harmful pollutant molecules, such as PFOA, in aqueous media.

Anion-exchange facilitated selective extraction of sulfate and phosphate by overcoming the Hofmeister bias

Selective recognition and removal of sulfate and phosphates from aqueous media in the presence of highly competing anions is very demanding because of their biological and environmental implications. In this paper, we present the anion recognition approach for the selective and efficient extraction of sulfate by nitrophenyl-functionalized tris-urea receptors (L₁-L₂) from highly competitive aqueous media with an equivalent concentration of nitrate and other anions. Tetrabutylammonium hydroxide has been used for the first time as a phase transfer anionic extractant for sulfate-exchange from the aqueous phase to the organic phase (dichloromethane) containing a tris-urea receptor (L₁-L₃). The sulfate extraction efficacy of L₂ (≈84-90%) was observed to be higher than those of L₁ (≈76-82%) and L₃ (≈68-75%) in competitive extraction experiments. In contrast, an analogous nitrophenyl-functionalized tris-thiourea receptor (L₄) has been recognized for the selective and efficient extraction of phosphates from aqueous media in the presence of several competing anions including sulfate and nitrate, with ≈85-92% extraction efficiency. In this case, tetrabutylammonium acetate has been used as a phase transfer anionic extractant for phosphate exchange between the two immiscible phases. Due to the higher acidity of tris-thiourea -NH groups in comparison to the analogous tris-urea, tetrabutylammonium hydroxide could deprotonate a hydrogen bond donating -NH group of the thiourea receptor and phosphate extraction was observed to be inefficient in such a case. Several liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) experiments have been carried out to establish the selective removal of sulfate and phosphates by the tripodal receptors from competitive aqueous media having different combinations of two or more anions. The LLE products obtained from organic phases were characterized by NMR (¹H, ¹³C, ³¹P, and ¹⁹F) spectroscopy to affirm the oxoanion selectivity of the receptors and purity of the complexes. The tripodal receptors can easily be recycled for successive extraction cycles by simply washing the LLE products (oxoanion complexes) with a methanol-water (1 : 1, v/v) solvent system followed by filtration.

Selectivity adsorption of sulfate by amino-modified activated carbon during capacitive deionization

ABSTRACTCapacitive deionization (CDI) is an environmentally friendly desalination technique with low energy consumption. However, unmodified carbon electrode materials have poor sulfate selectivity and adsorption capacity. In this work, to improve sulfate selectivity, we prepared activated carbon materials loaded with different amino contents by grafting amino groups via acid treatment for different times. In the competitive ion adsorption experiments, the sulfate selectivity of AC was only 0.64 and the amino-modified AC increased by 1.98-2.52 times due to the formation of stronger hydrogen bonds between the amino group and sulfate. AC-NH₂-4 had the best selectivity and the sulfate selective coefficient was 2.25. The desorption of sulfate was 92.46% within one hour. In addition, the surface of the amino-modified activated carbon showed significantly improved electrochemical properties and better capacitance. The specific capacitance of amino-modified AC in different electrolyte solutions was consistent with the competitive adsorption results. The specific capacitance of amino-modified AC in Na₂SO₄ electrolyte solution was the highest. The modified electrode material also had the advantages of a higher adsorption capacity and excellent regeneration performance after continuous electric adsorption-desorption cycles. Therefore, it may have development potential to selectively adsorb sulfate in practical applications.

Spectroscopic and Density Functional Studies on the Interaction of a Naphthalene Derivative with Anions

This article highlights the investigation of anion interactions and recognition abilities of naphthalene derivative, [(E)-1-(((4-nitrophenyl)imino)methyl)naphthalen-2-ol], (NIMO) by UV-visible spectroscopically and colorimetrically. NIMO shows selective recognition of F^- ions colorimetrically, and a visual color change from yellow to pink is observed by the naked eye. The F^- ions recognition is fully reversible in the presence of HSO₄^- ions. The limit of F^- ions detection by NIMO could be possible down to 0.033 ppm-level. A paper strips-based test kit has been demonstrated to detect F^- ions selectively by the naked eye, and a smartphone-based method for real sample analysis in the non-aqueous medium has also been demostrated. Spectroscopic behavior is well supported by pK_a value calculation and DFT analysis, to find a correlation with receptor analyte interaction. The optical response of NIMO towards the accumulation of F^- ions and, subsequently, HSO₄^- ions as chemical inputs provides an opportunity to construct INH and IMP molecular logic gates.

Facial vs. meridional coordination in gaseous Ni(II)-hexacyclen complexes revealed with infrared ion spectroscopy

We report fingerprint infrared multiple-photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectra of the isolated gaseous hexa-coordinated complex of the macrocycle hexa-aza-18-crown-6 (hexacyclen, 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaazacyclooctadecane, 18-azacrown-6) with Ni2+. The metal-ligand complexes are generated using electrospray ionization (ESI) and IR action spectra are recorded in a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FTICR) MS coupled to the infrared free-electron laser FELIX. We investigate geometric structure of the complexes and in particular the chelation motif, by comparison with computed vibrational spectra, obtained using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31++G(d,p) level. The quasi-octahedral chelation motif of the complex has been well documented in condensed-phase studies, and we focus here on the gas-phase structure, addressing in particular the question of a facial (fac) versus a meridional (mer) octahedral chelation geometry. Based on the good agreement between calculated linear IR spectra and experimental IRMPD spectra, we conclude that the gas-phase complex adopts a mer chelation geometry and we exclude significant contribution of the fac isomer, which is computed to lie about 10 kJ mol-1 higher in energy. We also address the possible presence of both meridional diastereomers and of higher energy conformers of meridional isomers. Finally, as expected for the d8 Ni2+-ion in an octahedral ligand environment, the IR spectrum also shows that the complexes are in a high-spin electron configuration.

Glyphosate sensing in aqueous solutions by fluorescent zinc(II) complexes of [9]aneN3-based receptors

Herein we describe the binding abilities of Zn(II) complexes of [12]aneN4- (L1) and [9]aneN3-based receptors (L2, L3) towards the herbicides N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine (glyphosate, H3PMG) and 2-amino-4-[hydroxy(methyl)phosphoryl]butanoic acid (glufosinate, H2GLU), and also aminomethylphosphonic acid (H2AMPA), the main metabolite of H3PMG, and phosphate. All ligands form stable Zn(II) complexes, whose coordination geometries allow a possible interaction of the metal center with exogenous anionic substrates. Potentiometric studies evidenced the marked coordination ability of the L2/Zn(II) system for the analytes considered, with a preferential binding affinity for H3PMG over the other substrates, in a wide range of pH values. 1H and 31P NMR experiments supported the effective coordination of such substrates by the Zn(II) complex of L2, while fluorescence titrations and a test strip experiment were performed to evaluate whether the H3PMG recognition processes could be detected by fluorescence signaling.

Enhancement of charge-assisted hydrogen bond capabilities due to O-alkylation proximity in alkoxy cationic polythiophenes: solution- and solid-state evidence via EPR, AFM and surface free energy

Despite the array of applications for cationic polythiophenes (CPTs), there is still a need for structure-function guidelines and mechanistic understanding of their solution- and solid-state properties. This work presents a solution- and solid-state investigation of the effect of O-alkylation proximity on the hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) capabilities of alkoxy-CPTs, based on comparing an imidazolium alkoxy CPT with strong cation-pi, pi+ and positive charge-assisted hydrogen bonding (+CAHB) capabilities (PIMa), with two isothiouronium alkoxy CPTs with two-point +CAHB capabilities (PT1 & PT2), which have short and long alkoxy side chains, respectively. Our results show that a closer proximity of O-alkylation strengthens the +CAHB capabilities of PT1: in aqueous solutions, PT2 aggregates have a stronger interaction with cationic EPR spin probes than aggregates of PIMa and PT1, which in turn show a similar extent of repulsion towards the cationic spin probes. In solid-state, atomic force microscopy (AFM) shows that PIMa generates dendritic structures onto mica, with features of diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA), indicating strong interactions with the anionic substrate due to a high configurational entropy during spreading, regardless of being drop-casted from water or 1,4-dioxane-water (W-DI), despite the latter disturbing H-bonding due to selective solvation. PT1 is also capable of generating dendritic structures resembling ballistic aggregation (BA). However, this occurs only when casting from water, since W-DI generates island-like aggregates resembling attachment limited aggregation (ALA), which is the morphology generated by PT2 regardless of the solvent. Finally, spin-coated films of PIMa and PT1 show similar dispersivity of the surface free energy (SFE), which in turn is larger than that in PT2 films, which are also more affected when casted from W-DI, presenting much larger decreases of dispersivity. These results constitute a novel empirical structure-function guideline that could be useful for optimal design and/or processing of alkoxy CPTs. For example, dendritic patterns have recently gained attention since the colloidal droplet drying is related to engineering applications including inkjet printing, biosensing, and functional material design, while the SFE is relevant for opto- and bio-electronic applications of conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs). This information could also be useful when analyzing previous results obtained from alkoxy CPTs with different side chain lengths.

Cationic polythiophene-anionic fullerene pair in water and water-dioxane: studies on hydrogen bonding capabilities, kinetic and thermodynamic properties

Despite the vast array of solution- and solid-state bio-analytical, bioelectronic and optoelectronic applications of cationic polythiophenes (CPTs), the number of studies focused on the role of hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) between these and other molecules is scarce, regardless of whether H-bonding is expected to play an important role in several such applications. Also, despite the advantages of using cosolvents to systematically examine the molecular interactions, there are no such studies for CPTs to our knowledge. This work presents a steady-state UV-vis/fluorescence spectroscopic, kinetic and thermodynamic study on the H-bonding interactions between a water-soluble, cationic-anionic (isothiouronium-tetraphosphonate), polythiophene-fullerene donor-acceptor pair with two-point, charge-assisted H-bonding (CAHB) capabilities, tuned using water or a 1,4-dioxane-water mixture (W-DI). Both solvents generate photoinduced electron transfer (PET), fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), spontaneous binding, H-bonding, ground-state complexing via multiple site binding, formation of micelle-like aggregates and equivalence points at a similar concentration of the quencher. However, in comparison with water, W-DI promotes less-ordered, less packed micellar aggregates, due to hydrophobic desolvation of the H-bond and larger solvent displacement during the PT1-4Fo complexation. This would decrease the extent of charge-transfer and the size of the sphere-of-quenching, mainly by displacements or rotations of the H-bonds, instead of elongations, together with a possible larger extent of diffusion-controlled static quenching. At [4Fo] larger than the equivalence point the micelles formed in water do not have available binding sites due to a tighter aggregation, causing a decrease in the quenching efficiency, while the micelles formed in W-DI start showing larger quenching efficiencies, possibly due to an increase in entropy that overcomes the desolvation of the H-bonding. These results could be useful when analyzing outputs from systems including CPTs with H-bonding capabilities, operating in (or casted from) solvents with clear differences in polarity and/or H-bonding capacity.

Targeted perfusion adsorption for hyperphosphatemia using mixed matrix microspheres (MMMs) encapsulated NH2-MIL-101(Fe)

Hyperphosphatemia, a common complication of chronic renal failure patients, is described as an excess amount of serum phosphate >4.5 mg dL-1. Current therapy for hyperphosphatemia is limited by low removal efficiency, secondary hyperparathyroidism, uremic bone disease, and the promotion of vascular and visceral calcifications. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have aroused great interest in the field of blood purification because of their strong specific adsorption. Herein, we prepared mixed matrix microspheres (MMMs) encapsulated NH2-MIL-101(Fe) with specific adsorption to blood phosphate. Simultaneously, a heparinoid copolymer poly (acrylic acid-sodium 4-vinylbenzenssulfonate) (P(AA-SSNa)) was incorporated to improve the hemocompatibility. The proposed MMMs exhibited excellent phosphate adsorption capacity both in aqueous and human plasma environments. They also showed comprehensive hemocompatibility e.g. low tendency of protein adsorption, low hemolysis rate and extended blood coagulation time. In general, we envision that the MMMs are potentially suitable as highly efficient hemoperfusion adsorbents for hyperphosphatemia treatment.

J-like aggregation of a cationic polythiophene with hydrogen-bonding capabilities due to 1,4-dioxane: Solution excitation spectra and fluorescence, morphology and surface free energy of films

This work presents solution- and solid-state evidence of the enhancement of J-like aggregation of a cationic polythiophene (CPT) with isothiouronium functionalities (PT1), caused by a decrease in the polarity and hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) capacity of the solvent, generated by using a 50:50 v/v 1,4-dioxane-water mixture (W-DI) instead of water. In solution, the presence of 1,4-dioxane (DI) seems to generate selective solvation, tuning the energy transfer within PT1 from inter-chain into intra-chain, enhancing J-like aggregation. On the other hand, during the casting process, the presence of DI directs the interaction with solid-substrates, generating an increase in the solid-state fluorescence, modifying the morphology from one similar to ballistic-aggregation (BA) into one similar to attachment limited aggregation (ALA), DI also modifies the SFE by increasing slightly its polar contribution (γSp) and decreasing the dispersive one (γSd). These results can be explained to be caused by a "coating" effect in presence of DI (as proposed before experimentally and computationally). Our results show a clear correlation between the solution- and solid-state properties of PT1 in each solvent, further validating the use of the fluorescence excitation spectra to trace J-like aggregation of water-soluble conjugated polymeric fluorophores in solution. This information could be useful for predicting and designing specific mesoscopic architectures of CPTs (and conjugated polyelectrolytes in general), which are molecules lacking of clear structure-function guidelines for designing high-performance polythiophene-based interlayer materials, especially for CPTs (and conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) in general), particularly those with H-bonding capabilities. To the best of our knowledge the use of solution-state fluorescence excitation spectra to identify J-like aggregation of water-soluble conjugated polymers (CPs) has been scarcely used/discussed in literature and no correlation with solid-state properties was reported previously.

A highly selective sequential recognition probe for Zn2+ and HSO4-/H2PO4- based on a diarylethene chemosensor

A novel diarylethene derivative chemosensor DTP-o connected to Schiff base unit for fluorescent detection of Zn²⁺ and relay-detection of HSO₄^-/H₂PO₄^- was designed and synthesized successfully. DTP-o displayed excellent photochromism and fluorometric sensing toward Zn²⁺ to form DTP-o-Zn²⁺ complex in acetonitrile with the detection limit of 5.62 × 10^-7 M. And the form of DTP-o combined with Zn²⁺ could further be verified by Job's plot titrations and mass spectrometry analysis. Furthermore, the complex of DTP-o-Zn²⁺ showed an excellent characteristic of fluorescent relay-response toward HSO₄^- and H₂PO₄^- with high sensitivity and selectivity. The detection limits for HSO₄^- and H₂PO₄^- were as low as 3.04 × 10^-8 M and 3.41 × 10^-8 M, respectively. Moreover, the sensor DTP-o could also be applied to detect Zn²⁺ on practical samples and test strips with high accuracy.

Selective sensing of adenosine monophosphate (AMP) over adenosine diphosphate (ADP), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and inorganic phosphates with zinc(II)-dipicolylamine-containing gold nanoparticles

Mixed monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles containing surface-bound triethylene glycol and dipicolylamine groups aggregated in water/methanol, 1 : 2 (v/v) in the presence of nucleotides, if the solution also contained zinc(ii) nitrate to convert the dipicolylamine units into the corresponding zinc complexes. Nanoparticle aggregation could be followed with the naked eye by the colour change of the solution from red to purple followed by nanoparticle precipitation. The sensitivity was highest for adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which could be detected at concentrations >10 μM, and decreased over adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to adenosine monophosphate (AMP), consistent with the typically higher affinity of zinc(ii)-dipicolylamine-derived receptors for higher charged nucleotides. Inorganic sodium diphosphate and triphosphate interfered in the assay by also inducing nanoparticle aggregation. However, while the nucleotide-induced aggregates persisted even at higher analyte concentrations, the nanoparticles that were precipitated with inorganic salts redissolved again when the salt concentration was increased. The thus resulting solutions retained their ability to respond to nucleotides, but they now preferentially responded to AMP. Accordingly, AMP could be sensed selectively at concentrations ≥50 μM in an aqueous environment, even in the presence of other nucleotides and inorganic anions. This work thus introduces a novel approach for the sensing of a nucleotide that is often the most difficult analyte to detect with other assays.

Hybrid GMP-polyamine hydrogels as new biocompatible materials for drug encapsulation

Here we present the preparation and characterization of new biocompatible materials for drug encapsulation. These new gels are based on positively charged [1+1] 1H-pyrazole-based azamacrocycles which minimise the electrostatic repulsions between the negatively charged GMP molecules. Rheological measurements confirm the electroneutral hydrogel structure as the most stable for all the GMP-polyamine systems. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was employed to investigate the kinetics of the hydrogel formation and cryo-scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM) was used to obtain information about the hydrogel morphology, which exhibited a non-homogeneous structure with a high degree of cross-linking. It is possible to introduce isoniazid, which is the most employed antibiotic for tuberculosis treatment, into the hydrogels without disrupting the hydrogel structure at appropriate concentrations for oral administration.

Aromatic and heteroaromatic azacrown compounds: advantages and disadvantages of rigid macrocyclic ligands

Current approaches to the synthesis of aromatic and heteroaromatic azamacrocycles and their derivatives are summarized and systematized. The relationship between the structure of azacrown compounds and their complexation behaviour towards metal cations is analyzed. The diversity of practical applications of azamacrocyclic derivatives in medicine, biology and analytical and organic chemistry, as well as for the design of molecular devices is demonstrated.

Design and applications of metal-based molecular receptors and probes for inorganic phosphate

Inorganic phosphate has numerous biomedical functions. Regulated primarily by the kidneys, phosphate reaches abnormally high blood levels in patients with advanced renal diseases. Since phosphate cannot be efficiently removed by dialysis, the resulting hyperphosphatemia leads to increased mortality. Phosphate is also an important component of the environmental chemistry of surface water. Although required to secure our food supply, inorganic phosphate is also linked to eutrophication and the spread of algal blooms with an increasing economic and environmental burden. Key to resolving both of these issues is the development of accurate probes and molecular receptors for inorganic phosphate. Yet, quantifying phosphate in complex aqueous media remains challenging, as is the development of supramolecular receptors that have adequate sensitivity and selectivity for use in either blood or surface waters. Metal-based receptors are particularly well-suited for these applications as they can overcome the high hydration enthalpy of phosphate that limits the effectiveness of many organic receptors in water. Three different strategies are most commonly employed with inorganic receptors for anions: metal extrusion assays, responsive molecular receptors, and indicator displacement assays. In this review, the requirements for molecular receptors and probes for environmental applications are outlined. The different strategies deployed to recognize and sense phosphate with metal ions will be detailed, and their advantages and shortfalls will be delineated with key examples from the literature.

Selective Phosphate Removal from Water and Wastewater using Sorption: Process Fundamentals and Removal Mechanisms

Eutrophication of water bodies is a serious and widespread environmental problem. Achieving low levels of phosphate concentration to prevent eutrophication is one of the important goals of the wastewater engineering and surface water management. Meeting the increasingly stringent standards is feasible in using a phosphate-selective sorption system. This critical review discusses the most fundamental aspects of selective phosphate removal processes and highlights gains from the latest developments of phosphate-selective sorbents. Selective sorption of phosphate over other competing anions can be achieved based on their differences in acid-base properties, geometric shapes, and metal complexing abilities. Correspondingly, interaction mechanisms between the phosphate and sorbent are categorized as hydrogen bonding, shape complementarity, and inner-sphere complexation, and their representative sorbents are organic-functionalized materials, molecularly imprinted polymers, and metal-based materials, respectively. Dominating factors affecting the phosphate sorption performance of these sorbents are critically examined, along with a discussion of some overlooked facts regarding the development of high-performance sorbents for selective phosphate removal from water and wastewater.

Selective encapsulation and extraction of hydrogenphosphate by a hydrogen bond donor tripodal receptor

Intramolecular N–H⋯OC hydrogen bonding between the inner amide groups dictates the receptor–anion complementarity in a tripodal receptor towards selective encapsulation of hydrogenphosphate in the outer urea cavity by multiple hydrogen bonds.

Effect of Spacer Length and Solvent on the Concentration-Driven Aggregation of Cationic Hydrogen-Bonding Donor Polythiophenes

Aggregation of cationic isothiouronium polythiophenes with alkoxy-spacers of different lengths at the 3-position of the thiophene ring was studied in solvents of different polarities. Hydrogen-bonding capacity was assessed by steady-state absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, whereas the aggregation in aqueous solutions was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, using paramagnetic probes of different polarities. The two polymers displayed similar features in respect to conformation, effect of cosolvents on aggregation, unstructured absorption-fluorescence spectra, Stokes shifts when aggregated, solvatochromic effect, and self-quenching concentration. However, these polymers also showed different specific interactions with water, Stokes shifts in water, effect of the solvent on the extent of dominant state of the S1 level, and also different inner cavities and hydrophobic-hydrophilic surface area in aqueous solution aggregates. Water maximized the difference between the polymers concerning the effect of specific increases in concentration, whereas the presence of 1,4-dioxane generated almost identical effects on both polymers.

Amide-functionalized pillar[5]arenes as a novel class of macrocyclic receptors for the sensing of H2PO4- anion

A novel class of amide-functionalized pillar[5]arenes, that is, alkyl and aryl amide derivatives, has been synthesized. Highly selective binding of the dihydrogen phosphate anion over a range of anions by the new synthetic receptors is reported. First, the "binding strength-selectivity" relationship has been decided for the pillar[5]arene/anion systems.

Multicopper Laccase Mimicking Nanozymes with Nucleotides as Ligands

Using nanomaterials to achieve functional enzyme mimics (nanozymes) is attractive for both applied and fundamental research. Laccases are multicopper oxidases highly important for biotechnology and environmental remediation. In this work, we report an exceptionally simple yet functional laccase mimic based on guanosine monophosphate (GMP) coordinated copper. It forms an amorphous metal-organic framework (MOF) material. The ratio of copper and GMP is 3:4 as determined by isothermal titration calorimetry. It has excellent laccase-like activity and converts a diverse range of phenol containing substrates such as hydroquinone, naphthol, catechol and epinephrine. Comparative work shows that the activity is originated from guanosine coordination instead of phosphate binding in GMP. Cu²⁺ is required and cannot be substituted by other metal ions. At the same mass concentration, the Cu/GMP nanozyme has a higher V_max and similar K_m compared to the protein laccase. To achieve the same catalytic efficiency, the cost of the Gu/GMP is ∼2400-fold lower than that of laccase. The Cu/GMP is much more stable at extreme pH, high salt, high temperature and for long-term storage. This is one of the first laccase-mimicking nanozymes, which will find important applications in analytical chemistry, environmental protection, and biotechnology.

A highly selective ratiometric fluorescent probe for the cascade detection of Zn2+ and H2PO4− and its application in living cell imaging

A simple ratiometric sensor (L1) for the cascade detection of Zn²⁺ and H₂PO₄⁻ with high selectivity was reported based on the intermolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism.

Effect of alkoxy-spacer length and solvent on diluted solutions of cationic isothiouronium polythiophenes

We present a study on two cationic isothiouronium polythiophenes with alkoxy chains of different length in the 3-position of the thiophene ring. The compounds were characterized using experimental and theoretical techniques.

Fluorescence sensor for sequential detection of zinc and phosphate ions

A new, highly selective turn-on fluorescent chemosensor based on 2-(2'-tosylamidophenyl)thiazole (1) for the detection of zinc and phosphate ions in ethanol was synthesized and characterized. Sensor 1 showed a high selectivity for zinc compared to other cations and sequentially detected hydrogen pyrophosphate and hydrogen phosphate. The fluorescence mechanism can be explained by two different mechanisms: (i) the inhibition of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and (ii) chelation-induced enhanced fluorescence by binding with Zn(2+). The sequential detection of phosphate anions was achieved by the quenching and subsequent revival of ESIPT.

Di- and Triphosphate Recognition and Sensing with Mono- and Dinuclear Fluorescent Zinc(II) Complexes: Clues for the Design of Selective Chemosensors for Anions in Aqueous Media

The synthesis of a new ligand (L1) containing two 1,4,7-triazacyclononane ([9]aneN₃ ) moieties linked by a 4,5-dimethylenacridine unit is reported. The binding and fluorescence sensing properties toward Cu²⁺ , Zn²⁺ , Cd²⁺ , and Pb²⁺ of L1 and receptor L2, composed of two [9]aneN₃ macrocycles bridged by a 6,6''-dimethylen-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine unit, have been studied by coupling potentiometric, UV/Vis absorption, and emission measurements in aqueous media. Both receptors can selectively detect Zn²⁺ thanks to fluorescence emission enhancement upon metal binding. The analysis of the binding and sensing properties of the Zn²⁺ complexes toward inorganic anions revealed that the dinuclear Zn²⁺ complex of L1 selectively binds and senses the triphosphate anion (TP), whereas the mononuclear Zn²⁺ complex of L2 displays selective recognition of diphosphate (DP). Binding of TP or DP induces emission quenching of the Zn²⁺ complexes with L1 and L2, respectively. These results are exploited to discuss the role played by pH, number of coordinated metal cations, and binding ability of the bridging units in metal and/or anion coordination and sensing.

Fluorescent asymmetric bis-ureas for pyrophosphate recognition in pure water

Three fluorescent asymmetric bis-urea receptors (L1-L3) have been synthesised. The binding properties of L1-L3 towards different anions (fluoride, acetate, hydrogencarbonate, dihydrogen phosphate, and hydrogen pyrophosphate HPpi(3-)) have been studied by means of (1)H-NMR, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and theoretical calculations. In particular, a remarkable affinity for HPpi(3-) has been observed in the case L1 (DMSO-d6/0.5% H2O) which also acts as a fluorimetric chemosensor for this anion. Interestingly, when L1 is included in cetyltrimethylammonium (CTAB) micelles, hydrogen pyrophosphate recognition can also be achieved in pure water.

Phosphate binding by a novel Zn(II) complex featuring a trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane ligand. Effective anion recognition in water

In this work we have investigated the binding properties of a new synthetic receptor for phosphate anions that combines metal ion coordination with electrostatic and H-bonding interactions. The described receptor is obtained by assembling an iminodiacetic (IDA) fragment, as a Zn(II) binding site, with a polyamine macrocyclic portion containing two trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (DAC) units and a pyrrole ring, as a cationic binding site, into an adaptive structure appropriately spanning the length of di- and tridentate phosphates. Potentiometric measurements together with (1)H and (31)P NMR investigation showed that, in a wide pH range including values of physiological interest, the Zn(II) complex of the receptor binds di- and triphosphates, such as ADP, ATP, pyrophosphate (PP) and triphosphate (TP), far better than monophosphate (MP), and that TP is poorly bound by methyliminodiacetate (MIDA) as a model for the Zn(II) binding site. Besides the excellent selectivity over other phosphates, the affinity for TP is the largest reported to date for Zn(II) complexes in water.
