Effectively Sieving Alkali Metal Ions Using Functionalized Graphene Oxide Membranes by Exploiting Water-Repellent Interactions

Sieving membranes capable of discerning different alkali metal ions are important for many technologies, such as energy, environment, and life science. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) materials have been extensively explored for the creation of sieving membranes with angstrom-scale channels. However, because of the same charge and similar hydrated sizes, mostly laminated membranes typically show low selectivity (<10). Herein, we report a facile and scalable method for functionalizing graphene oxide (GO) laminates by dually grafting cations and water-repellent dimethylsiloxane (DMDMS) molecules to achieve high selectivities of ∼50 and ∼20 toward the transport of Cs+/Li+ and K+/Li+ ion pairs, surpassing many of the state-of-the-art laminated membranes. The enhanced selectivity for alkali metal ions can be credited to a dual impact: (i) strong hydrophobic interactions between the incident cations' hydration shells and the water-repellent DMDMS; (ii) the efficient screening of electrostatic interactions that hamper selectivity.

Immobilization of two dendritic organic phases onto silica and their molecular shape recognition for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, tocopherols and carotenoid isomers

BACKGROUND

Molecular shape selectivity, based on the size and shape parameters of the molecule, such as length and planarity, is a separation process that can be used for compounds with restricted shapes, such as isomers. The separation of geometric isomers is challenging because these compounds have similar physicochemical properties but differ slightly in molecular shape. The ability to separate and quantify these isomers is important in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which is one of the most widely used techniques in separation science today, because the shape of the molecule has a strong influence on biological processes.

RESULTS

We prepared symmetrical discoidal dendrimeric organomolecule gelators (GSDM) and o-phenylenediamine-derived low-molecular-weight dendrimeric organomolecule gelators (G1) and bonded them to silica surfaces. The dendritic organic compound-grafted silica (SiO2@GSDM and SiO2@G1) was used as HPLC stationary phases for the separation of shape-restricted isomers of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), carotenoids and tocopherols. The two phases exhibit a very high molecular shape selectivity compared to the commercially available alkyl phases. There are differences in molecular shape selectivity between the two stationary phases. Changes in the chemical structure of dendritic organic compounds can alter the orientation of the molecules, as well as changes in the molecular recognition ability. It was found that SiO2@GSDM has high molecular linear selectivity for PAHs at different temperatures, even at 50 °C. The planar selectivity of SiO2@GSDM was better for triphenylene and o-terphenyl benzenes compared to SiO2@G1.

SIGNIFICANCE

This separation behavior may be attributed to the combined effect of weak interaction centers, which allowed the effective separation of bioactive and shape-restricted isomers through multiple interactions. Furthermore, SiO2@GSDM showed better separation of tocopherols and carotenoids, suggesting that the backbone and ordered structure of organic molecular gelators is an effective way to improve the shape selectivity of the molecules, whereas the molecular orientation of the functional groups influences the separation mechanism of the shape-restricted isomers.

Smart supramolecular photoresponsive gelator with long-alkyl chain azobenzene incorporated sugar derivatives for recycling aromatic solvents and sequestration of cationic dyes

Phase-selective gelation of low molecular-weight photoresponsive organogelator possessing long aliphatic chain azobenzene sugar derivatives and its applications in the recycling of aromatic solvents and also the removal of cationic dyes is reported. Very low critical gelation concentration (CGC) in aromatic solvents implies that it acts as a very good gelator. The photoinduced gel-to-sol transition was attained by irradiation with UV light at 350 nm. These organogels work as a selective adsorbent for efficiently removing cationic dyes from individual aqueous dye solutions and in a mixture of cationic and anionic dye solutions show more than 95% removal within 12 h. These insights indicate that these sugar derivatives could be exploited in implementing smart materials for environmental remediation.

Stimuli-Responsive Transformable Supramolecular Nanotubes

Supramolecular nanotubes produced by self-assembly of organic molecules can have unique structural features such as a one-dimensional morphology with no branching, distinguishable inner and outer surfaces and membrane walls, or a structure that is hollow and has a high aspect ratio. Incorporation of functional groups that respond to external chemical or physical stimuli into the constituent organic molecules of supramolecular nanotubes allows us to drastically change the structure of the nanotubes by applying such stimuli. This ability affords an array of controllable approaches for the encapsulation, storage, and release of guest compounds, which is expected to be useful in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine. In this article, I review the supramolecular nanotubes developed by our group that exhibit morphological transformations in response to pH, chemical reaction, light, temperature, or moisture.

Gamma Radiation- and Ultraviolet-Induced Polymerization of Bis(amino acid)fumaramide Gel Assemblies

Controlling the polymerization of supramolecular self-assembly through external stimuli holds great potential for the development of responsive soft materials and manipulation at the nanoscale. Vinyl esters of bis(leu or val)fumaramide (1a and 2a) have been found to be gelators of various organic solvents and were applied in this investigation of the influence of organogelators’ self-assembly on solid-state polymerization induced by gamma and ultraviolet irradiation. Here, we report our investigation into the influences of self-assemblies of bis(amino acid vinyl ester)fumaramides on gamma-ray- and ultraviolet-induced polymerization. The gelator molecules self-assembled by non-covalent interactions, mainly through hydrogen bonds between the amide group (CONH) and the carboxyl group (COO), thus forming a gel network. NMR and FTIR spectroscopy were used to investigate and characterize supramolecular gels. TEM and SEM microscopy were used to investigate the morphology of gels and polymers. Morphology studies showed that the gels contained a filamentous structure of nanometer dimensions that was exhaustive in a three-dimensional network. The prepared derivatives contained reactive alkyl groups suitable for carrying out the polymerization reaction initiated by gamma or ultraviolet radiation in the supramolecular aggregates of selected gels. It was found that the polymerization reaction occurred only in the network of the gel and was dependent on the structure of aggregates or the proximity and orientation of double bonds in the gel network. Polymers were formed by the gels exposure to gamma and ultraviolet radiation in toluene, and water/DMF gels with transcripts of their gel structure into polymers. The polymeric material was able to immobilize various solvents by swelling. Furthermore, methyl esters of bis(leu and val)fumaramide (1b and 2b) were synthesized; these compounds showed no gelling properties, and the crystal structure of the valine derivative 2b was determined.

Controllable synthesis of porous tubular carbon by a Ag+-ligand-assisted Stöber-silica/carbon assembly process

Herein, in this study, we utilized Ag+-ligand interactions for critically regulating the morphology of carbon by the Stöber-silica/carbon co-assembly method for the first time. Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and resorcinol/formaldehyde (RF) assemble upon dictation by Ag+ and pyridyl-functionalized surfactants, producing porous carbon tubes (RF1) with a high surface area of 696 m2 g-1 and accessible mesopores ∼15 nm in size. Furthermore, when using tetrapropyl orthosilicate (TPOS) with a slower hydrolysis rate than that of TEOS, carbon tubes (RF2) with enhanced uniformity and a surface area as high as 2112 m2 g-1 are generated. Additionally, when using dopamine hydrochloride instead of RF as a carbon precursor, tubular polydopamine (TDA) with lengths of tens of microns is fabricated, which exhibits excellent catalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reactions in alkaline solutions due to its unique structural feature, a high surface area of 1350 m2 g-1, metallic silver remains of 8.3 wt%, and a rich nitrogen content of 3.6 wt%. This work sheds light on the engineering of a micellar soft template and synthesizing novel nanostructures by the extension of the Stöber method.

LMWGs based on coumarins could form supramolecular gels with unusual mechanical properties explained by its interactions at theoretical level.

How Far Are We in Combating Marine Oil Spills by Using Phase-Selective Organogelators?

Marine oil spills is one of the frequent natural disasters that adversely affect the economy and ecosystem. A variety of methods have been developed to combat marine oil spills. However, none of these methods is ideal and universal for tackling different kinds of oil spills. In addition, most of these methods do not offer the possibility for recovering the spilt oil. There is great interest in developing novel and better methods for combating marine oil spills that allow recovery of the spilt oil. The use of low molecular weight organogelators that can selectively congeal oil from oil-water mixtures have been proposed to be useful for oil spill recovery. From this initial proposal, the area has progressed gradually towards their practical implementation. The advancements and novel concepts in this area are reviewed.

Chiral Nanoceramics

The study of different chiral inorganic nanomaterials has been experiencing rapid growth during the past decade, with its primary focus on metals and semiconductors. Ceramic materials can substantially expand the range of mechanical, optical, chemical, electrical, magnetic, and biological properties of chiral nanostructures, further stimulating theoretical, synthetic, and applied research in this area. An ever-expanding toolbox of nanoscale engineering and self-organization provides a chirality-based methodology for engineering of hierarchically organized ceramic materials. However, fundamental discoveries and technological translations of chiral nanoceramics have received substantially smaller attention than counterparts from metals and semiconductors. Findings in this research area are scattered over a variety of sources and subfields. Here, the diversity of chemistries, geometries, and properties found in chiral ceramic nanostructures are summarized. They represent a compelling materials platform for realization of chirality transfer through multiple scales that can result in new forms of ceramic materials. Multiscale chiral geometries and the structural versatility of nanoceramics are complemented by their high chiroptical activity, enantioselectivity, catalytic activity, and biocompatibility. Future development in this field is likely to encompass chiral synthesis, biomedical applications, and optical/electronic devices. The implementation of computationally designed chiral nanoceramics for biomimetic catalysts and quantum information devices may also be expected.

Soft-Matter Nanotubes: A Platform for Diverse Functions and Applications

Self-assembled organic nanotubes made of single or multiple molecular components can be classified into soft-matter nanotubes (SMNTs) by contrast with hard-matter nanotubes, such as carbon and other inorganic nanotubes. To date, diverse self-assembly processes and elaborate template procedures using rationally designed organic molecules have produced suitable tubular architectures with definite dimensions, structural complexity, and hierarchy for expected functions and applications. Herein, we comprehensively discuss every functions and possible applications of a wide range of SMNTs as bulk materials or single components. This Review highlights valuable contributions mainly in the past decade. Fifteen different families of SMNTs are discussed from the viewpoints of chemical, physical, biological, and medical applications, as well as action fields (e.g., interior, wall, exterior, whole structure, and ensemble of nanotubes). Chemical applications of the SMNTs are associated with encapsulating materials and sensors. SMNTs also behave, while sometimes undergoing morphological transformation, as a catalyst, template, liquid crystal, hydro-/organogel, superhydrophobic surface, and micron size engine. Physical functions pertain to ferro-/piezoelectricity and energy migration/storage, leading to the applications to electrodes or supercapacitors, and mechanical reinforcement. Biological functions involve artificial chaperone, transmembrane transport, nanochannels, and channel reactors. Finally, medical functions range over drug delivery, nonviral gene transfer vector, and virus trap.

Supramolecular Nanotube Reactors for Production of Imine Polymers with Controlled Conformation, Size, and Chirality

A series of supramolecular nanotubes with inner diameters of 1, 4, 9, 12, 16, and 29 nm are prepared from amino acid lipids. The hydrophobic channels of the nanotubes act as reactors for the formation of imine polymers by not only effectively encapsulating the benzaldehyde and diacetyleneamine precursors of the imine monomers but also markedly accelerating imine formation. The nanotube inner diameter determines whether the imine monomers self-assemble into nanoparticles, nanotapes, nanocoils, or twisted nanofibers in the channels. UV-induced polymerization of the diacetylene units in the imine nanostructures followed by decomposition of the nanotubes into molecular dispersions of the constituent amino acid lipids results in expulsion of the polymerized imine nanostructures with retained conformation. The isolated nanocoils and twisted nanofibers retain the helicity and circular dichroism induced by the nanotubes, which exhibits supramolecular chirality, even though the components of the imine monomers are achiral. These supramolecular nanotubes with tunable diameters and functionalizable surfaces can be expected to be useful for the production of polymers with controlled conformation, size, and chirality without the need for rational design or chemical modification of the monomers or optimization of the polymerization conditions.

Stimuli-Responsive Metallogels for Synthesizing Ag Nanoparticles and Sensing Hazardous Gases

A newly synthesized bis-pyridyl ligand having a diphenyl ether backbone (LP6) displayed the ability to form crystalline coordination polymers (CP1-CP6) which were fully characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Most of the resulting polymers were lattice-occluded crystalline solids-a structural characteristic reminiscent to gels. The reactants of the coordination polymers produced metallogels in DMSO/water confirming the validity of the design principles with which the coordination polymers were synthesized. Some of the metallogels displayed material properties like in situ synthesis of Ag nanoparticles and stimuli-responsive gel-sol transition including sensing hazardous gases like ammonia and hydrogen sulfide.

PEG-nanotube liquid crystals as templates for construction of surfactant-free gold nanorods

Lyotropic liquid crystals, in which nanotubes coated with polyethylene glycol were aligned side-by-side in aqueous dispersions, acted as templates for the construction of surfactant-free gold nanorods with controllable diameters, functionalizable surfaces, and tunable optical properties.

Supramolecular Gels Derived from the Salts of Variously Substituted Phenylacetic Acid and Dicyclohexylamine: Design, Synthesis, Structures, and Dye Adsorption

A well-studied supramolecular synthon, namely, secondary ammonium monocarboxylate (SAM), was exploited to generate a new series of organic salts derived from variously substituted phenylacetic acid and dicyclohexylamine as potential low-molecular-weight gelators. As much as 25 % of the SAM salts under study were gelators. The gels were characterized by rheology, and the morphology of the gel networks was studied by high-resolution electron microscopy. Single-crystal and powder XRD data were employed to study structure-property (gelation) correlations. One of the gels could adsorb a hydrophobic dye (Nile Red) more efficiently than that of a hydrophilic dye (Calcein) from dimethyl sulfoxide; this might provide useful clues towards the development of stain-removing gels.

Organogel-assisted topochemical synthesis of multivalent glyco-polymer for high-affinity lectin binding

An organogelator, 2,4-undeca-diynyl-4',6'-O-benzylidene-β-d-galactopyranoside, which aligns its diacetylene upon gelation, has been synthesized. UV irradiation of its gel resulted in topochemical polymerization of the gelator forming polydiacetylene (PDA). We have used this gel-state reaction for the synthesis of surface-immobilized multi-valent glycoclusters, which showed 1000-fold enhanced binding, compared to monomers, with various galactose-binding lectins.

Allosteric regulation of metal-binding sites inside an optically-active helical foldamer and its tubular assemblies

A helical foldamer bearing metal-binding linker units self-assembles into helical nanofibers that undergo a reversible helix-to-helix transition upon the binding and release of Ag(i) ions.

A Library of Multipurpose Supramolecular Supergelators: Fabrication of Structured Silica, Porous Plastics, and Fluorescent Gels

Supramolecular gels find applications in various fields. Usually, a specific gelator is useful only for a specific application. This one-gelator-one-application format is one factor that limits the usefulness of supramolecular gels. We report the synthesis of a library of gelators from a common core by using a click-chemistry approach. Thus, the click reaction of β-azido-4,6-O-benzylidene-galactopyranoside (1) with various alkynes gave 11 different gelators having varying gelation abilities. Whereas gelators having alkyl-chain substituents congealed alkanes and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), the gelators having aromatic substituents congealed aromatic solvents. We exploited this difference in gelling behavior in the templated synthesis of silica rods and porous plastics. The styrene gel of gelator 2 j was polymerized, and the gelator was removed by washing to obtain porous polystyrene. The TEOS gel of gelator 2 b was polymerized to silica, and the gelator template was removed by calcination to give microstructured silica rods. We also developed fluorescent gelator 2 f by this method, which might find applications by virtue of its fluorescence in the assembled state.

Binary Supramolecular Gel of Achiral Azobenzene with a Chaperone Gelator: Chirality Transfer, Tuned Morphology, and Chiroptical Property

Binary supramolecular gels based on achiral azobenzene derivatives and a chiral chaperone gelator, long-alkyl-chain-substituted L-Histidine (abbreviated as LHC18) that could assist many nongelling acids in forming gels, were investigated in order to fabricate the chiroptical gel materials in a simple way. It was found that although the carboxylic acid-terminated achiral azobenzene derivatives could not form gels in any solvents, when mixed with LHC18 they formed the co-gels and self-assembled into various morphologies ranging from nanotubes and loose nanotubes to nanosheets, depending on the substituent groups on the azobenzene moiety. The ether linkage and the number of carboxylic acid groups attached to the azobenzene moiety played important roles. Upon gel formation, the localized molecular chirality in LHC18 could be transferred to the azobenzene moiety. Combined with the trans-cis isomerization of the azobenzene, optically and chiroptically reversible gels were generated. It was found that the gel based on azobenzene with two carboxylic acid groups and ether linkages showed clear optical reversibility but less chiroptical reversibility, whereas the gel based on azobenzene with one carboxylic acid and an ether linkage showed both optical and chiroptical reversibility. Thus, new insights into the relationship among the molecular structures of the azobenzene, self-assembled nanostructures in the gel and the optical and chiroptical reversibility were disclosed.

A dual response organogel system based on an iridium complex and a Eu(iii) hybrid for volatile acid and organic amine vapors

A thiophene-based hybrid organogel system consisting of complex iridium (Ir) and EuCl₃·6H₂O was designed and synthesized to realize dual responses to volatile acids and organic amine vapors. The photophysical properties and self-assembly of compound 1 and the hybrid organogel were also studied. Compound 1 could gelate some organic solvents and self-assemble into 3D nanofibers in the gels. The stable hybrid organogel 1-Ir-Eu could be obtained after addition of complex Ir and EuCl₃·6H₂O. FTIR spectral results showed that the hydrogen bond still remained even upon addition of complex Ir, EuCl₃·6H₂O, NaOH and CF₃COOH to organogel 1. Interestingly, the emission properties of the hybrid organogel 1-Ir-Eu could undergo interconversion between cyan light and red light via addition of NaOH and CF₃COOH. The emission properties of xerogel film 1-Ir-Eu obtained in the presence of NaOH could also undergo fast and reversible transition in response to volatile acids such as CF₃COOH, formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid and organic amine vapors such as ammonium hydroxide, Et₃N, tripropylamine, and ethylenediamine. The emission spectral change of Ir-Eu in the organogel or xerogel in the presence of base and acid demonstrated the formation of a new complex between complex Ir and EuCl₃·6H₂O. This dual-response process could be repeated many times. Contact angle experiment results further showed the morphology and internal components of the xerogel film surface in the process of response to gaseous CF₃COOH and Et₃N. This work provides a method for producing multifunctional supramolecular materials for sensing volatile acids and organic amine vapors.

Robust, Self-Healing, and Multistimuli-Responsive Supergelator for the Visual Recognition and Separation of Short-Chain Cycloalkanes and Alkanes

In this study, we show that a novel kind of cholesterol-based gelator NPS containing pyridyl and naphthalimide units can visually discriminate cyclohexane/cyclopentane from hexane/pentane on the basis of distinct optical differences in the gel platform, which is not observed in solution. The effect of congeneric solvents on the gel properties, such as morphology, rheology, and stimuli-responsive properties, is also studied. Intriguingly, NPS can form self-supporting, self-healing, fluorescent, and highly visible transmittance gels in cyclohexane that can selectively and visually respond to picric acid. It is deduced that NPS adopted H-type aggregation mode in cyclohexane, and the gel exhibits a strong green emission, whereas, in hexane, J-type aggregates of NPS molecules are observed with yellow emission. Correlations between the gelation properties and Hansen solubility parameters indicate that the dispersion interactions are the main factor for the selective gelation of NPS toward short-chain alkanes. A comparison of Hansen solvent parameters indicated that a similar energetic weight of the hydrogen-bonding units is the major contribution for the strong and specific interaction between NPS and cyclohexane. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the NPS xerogel can selectively solidify cyclohexane in the single-phase liquid of solvent mixtures, exhibiting fast gelation, high separation efficiency (>92%), and easy recycling of gelator and liquids. To the best of our knowledge, herein, we report the first paradigm that molecular gel formation is developed to visually discriminate and separate organic analogues of solvents with similar polarity.

Fabrication of calix[4]arene-attached mesoporous ammonium molybdophosphate–silica hybrid and its application as an adsorbent for cesium ions

The cesium cation is a common contaminant in medical and industrial products as well as in nuclear wastes, and it can present a serious risk to human health.

Micro- and nano-tubules built from loosely and tightly rolled up thin sheets

Tubular structures built from amphiphilic molecules are of interest for nano-sensing, drug delivery, and structuring of oils. In this study, we characterized the tubules built in aqueous suspensions of a cholesteryl nucleoside conjugate, cholesterylaminouridine (CholAU) and phosphatidylcholines (PCs). In mixtures with unsaturated PCs having chain lengths comparable to the length of CholAU, two different types of tubular structures were observed; nano- and micro-tubules had average diameters in the ranges 50-300 nm and 2-3 μm, respectively. Using cryo scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM) we found that nano- and micro-tubules differed in their morphology: the nano-tubules were densely packed, whereas micro-tubules consisted of loosely rolled undulated lamellas. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed that the nano-tubules were built from 4 to 5 nm thick CholAU-rich bilayers, which were in the crystalline state. Solid-state (2)H NMR spectroscopy also confirmed that about 25% of the total CholAU, being about the fraction of CholAU composing the tubules, formed the rigid crystalline phase. We found that CholAU/PC tubules can be functionalized by molecules inserted into lipid bilayers and fluorescently labeled PCs and lipophilic nucleic acids inserted spontaneously into the outer layer of the tubules. The tubular structures could be loaded and cross-linked, e.g. by DNA hybrids, and, therefore, are of interest for further development, e.g. as a depot scaffold for tissue regeneration.

A novel low molecular weight supergelator showing an excellent gas adsorption, dye adsorption, self-sustaining and chemosensing properties in the gel state

The article describes the role of a novel amide based supergelator in gelating a wide range of copper salts. The metallogel was highly stable to heat, stress and mineral acids showing an unprecedented colorimetric gel-to gel sensing of amine vapours.

Amino acid appended cholic acid–azobenzene dyad: an effective & smart phase selective gelator for aromatic solvents

Two-step naked-eye detection of lectin by hierarchical organization of soft nanotubes into liquid crystal and gel phases

Depending on the concentration of a lectin analyte, supramolecular soft nanotubes, bearing recognition sites immobilized on the outer surface through ethylene glycol chains, hierarchically organized into naked-eye-detectable liquid crystals and hydrogels.

Multifarious facets of sugar-derived molecular gels: molecular features, mechanisms of self-assembly and emerging applications

The remarkable capability of nature to design and create excellent self-assembled nano-structures, especially in the biological world, has motivated chemists to mimic such systems with synthetic molecular and supramolecular systems. The hierarchically organized self-assembly of low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) based on non-covalent interactions has been proven to be a useful tool in the development of well-defined nanostructures. Among these, the self-assembly of sugar-derived LMWGs has received immense attention because of their propensity to furnish biocompatible, hierarchical, supramolecular architectures that are macroscopically expressed in gel formation. This review sheds light on various aspects of sugar-derived LMWGs, uncovering their mechanisms of gelation, structural analysis, and tailorable properties, and their diverse applications such as stimuli-responsiveness, sensing, self-healing, environmental problems, and nano and biomaterials synthesis.

Direct Visualization of Etching Trajectories in Metal-Assisted Chemical Etching of Si by the Chemical Oxidation of Porous Sidewalls

We demonstrate a simple method for the visualization of trajectories traced by noble metal nanoparticles during metal-assisted chemical etching (MaCE) of Si. The nanoporous Si layer formed around drilled pores is converted into SiO2 by simple chemical oxidation. Etch removal of the remaining Si using alkali hydroxide leaves SiO2 nanostructures that are the exact replica of those drilled pores or etching trajectories. The differences in etching characteristics between Ag and Au have been investigated using the proposed visualization method. The shape and chemical stability of metal nanoparticles used for MaCE have been found to be critical in determining etching paths. The proposed method would be very helpful in studying the fundamental mechanism of MaCE as well as in micro/nanostructuring of the Si surface for various applications. This approach can also be used for the generation of straight or helical SiO2 nanotubes.

An efficient phase-selective gelator for aromatic solvents recovery based on a cyanostilbene amide derivative

Two novel low molecular weight organogelators (LMOGs) 1 and 2 composed of a cholesteryl group, an amide group and various terminal cyanostilbene moieties were synthesized. They could form stable gels in p-xylene. In particular, 2 with more extended π-conjugation length showed remarkable gelation ability in many aromatic solvents, chloroform and chloroform-containing mixed solvents at a relatively low concentration. FT-IR and XRD spectra indicated that the difference between 1 and 2 in the gelation properties may result from the deviation of the intermolecular hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking as driving forces for the formation of the gels. Significantly, 2 can function as an efficient room-temperature phase-selective gelator (PSG) for potential application in the separation and recovery of various aromatic solvents from its mixture with water. Meanwhile, the gelator can be easily recovered and reused several times. Furthermore, the phase-selective gelation properties of 2 can provide a simple and feasible approach for the removal of the rhodamine B (RhB) dye from water.

Photoinduced morphological transformations of soft nanotubes

In water, synthetic amphiphiles composed of a photoresponsive azobenzene moiety and an oligoglycine hydrogen-bonding moiety selectively self-assembled into nanotubes with solid bilayer membranes. The nanotubes underwent morphological transformations induced by photoisomerization of the azobenzene moiety within the membranes, and the nature of the transformation depended on the number of glycine residues in the oligoglycine moiety (i.e., on the strength of intermolecular hydrogen bonding). Upon UV-light irradiation of nanotubes prepared from amphiphiles with the diglycine residue, trans-to-cis isomerization induced a transformation from nanotubes (inner diameter (i.d.) 7 nm), several hundreds of nanometers to several tens of micrometers in length, to imperfect nanorings (i.d. 21-38 nm). The cis-to-trans isomerization induced by continuous visible-light irradiation resulted in the stacking of the imperfect nanorings to form nanotubes with an i.d. of 25 nm and an average length of 310 nm, which were never formed by a self-assembly process. Time-lapse fluorescence microscopy enabled us to visualize the transformation of nanotubes with an i.d. of 20 nm (self-assembled from amphiphiles with the monoglycine residue) to cylindrical nanofibers with an i.d. of 1 nm; shrinkage of the hollow cylinders started at the two open ends with simultaneous elongation in the direction of the long axis.
