Abstract
Four dinuclear organometallic molecular wire complexes with diethynylmetalloporphyrin linkers 1 MM' , [5,15-bis{MCp*(dppe)ethynyl}-10,20-diarylporphinato]M' (Cp* = η5-C5Me5; dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane; M/M' = Fe/Zn (1 FeZn ), Ru/Zn (1 RuZn ), Fe/Ni (1 FeNi ), Ru/Ni (1 RuNi ); aryl = 3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl), are synthesized and characterized by NMR, CV, UV-vis-NIR, and ESI-TOF mass spectrometry techniques. Electrochemical investigations combined with electronic absorption spectroscopic studies reveal strong interactions among the electron-donating, redox-active MCp*(dppe) termini and the metalloporphyrin moieties. The monocationic species of the four complexes obtained by chemical oxidation have been characterized as mixed-valence Class II/III or Class III compounds according to the Robin-Day classification despite the long molecular dimension (>1.5 nm), as demonstrated by their intense intervalence charge transfer bands (IVCT) in the near IR region. DFT calculations indicate large spin densities on the metalloporphyrin moieties. Furthermore, the wirelike performance can be finely tuned by coordination of appropriate nitrogen donors to the axial sites of the metalloporphyrin.

Abstract
3D-aromatic molecules with (distorted) tetrahedral, octahedral, or spherical structures are much less common than typical 2D-aromatic species or even 2D-aromatic-in-3D systems. Closo boranes, [BnHn]2- (5 ≤ n ≤ 14) and carboranes are examples of compounds that are singly 3D-aromatic, and we now explore if there are species that are doubly 3D-aromatic. The most widely known example of a species with double 2D-aromaticity is the hexaiodobenzene dication, [C6I6]2+. This species shows π-aromaticity in the benzene ring and σ-aromaticity in the outer ring formed by the iodine substituents. Inspired by the hexaiodobenzene dication example, in this work, we explore the potential for double 3D-aromaticity in [B12I12]0/2+. Our results based on magnetic and electronic descriptors of aromaticity together with 11B{1H} NMR experimental spectra of boron-iodinated o-carboranes suggest that these two oxidized forms of a closo icosahedral dodecaiodo-dodecaborate cluster, [B12I12] and [B12I12]2+, behave as doubly 3D-aromatic compounds. However, an evaluation of the energetic contribution of the potential double 3D-aromaticity through homodesmotic reactions shows that delocalization in the I12 shell, in contrast to the 10σ-electron I62+ ring in the hexaiodobenzene dication, does not contribute to any stabilization of the system. Therefore, the [B12I12]0/2+ species cannot be considered as doubly 3D-aromatic.

Abstract
Phenyl, naphthyl, polyarylphenyl, coronene, and other aromatic and polyaromatic moieties primarily influence the final materials' properties. One of the synthetic tools used to implement (hetero)aromatic moieties into final structures is Diels-Alder cycloaddition (DAC), typically combined with Scholl dehydrocondensation. Substituted 2-pyranones, 1,1-dioxothiophenes, and, especially, 1,3-cyclopentadienones are valuable substrates for [4 + 2] cycloaddition, leading to multisubstituted derivatives of benzene, naphthalene, and other aromatics. Cycloadditions of dienes can be carried out with extrusion of carbon dioxide, carbon oxide, or sulphur dioxide. When pyranones, dioxothiophenes, or cyclopentadienones and DA cycloaddition are aided with acetylenes including masked ones, conjugated or isolated diynes, or polyynes and arynes, aromatic systems are obtained. This review covers the development and the current state of knowledge regarding thermal DA cycloaddition of dienes mentioned above and dienophiles leading to (hetero)aromatics via CO, CO2, or SO2 extrusion. Particular attention was paid to the role that introduced aromatic moieties play in designing molecular structures with expected properties. Undoubtedly, the DAC variants described in this review, combined with other modern synthetic tools, constitute a convenient and efficient way of obtaining functionalized nanomaterials, continually showing the potential to impact materials sciences and new technologies in the nearest future.

Abstract
Abstract
Sensing systems of nonpolar gas molecules without functional groups such as natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) remain difficult to develop because of lacking selective detection of such molecules over other gas molecules. Here we report a supramolecular fluorescence sensor for LPG using a 2-nm-sized cube-shaped molecular container i.e. a nanocube self-assembled from six molecules of gear-shaped amphiphiles (GSA) in water. The nanocube selectively encapsulates LPG, while it does not bind other gas molecules. Upon encapsulation of LPG in the nanocube, the fluorescence from the nanocube is enhanced by 3.9 times, which is caused by the restricted motion of the aromatic rings of GSA in the nanocube based on aggregation-induced emission. Besides the high selectivity, high sensitivity, quick response, high stability of the nanocube for LPG, and easy preparation of GSA satisfy the requirement for its practical use for an LPG sensor.

Abstract
Diels-Alder reaction of 2-, 3- and 4-(phenylethynyl)quinolines and tetraphenylcyclopentadienone gave three regioisomeric 2,3,4,5,6-pentaphenyl-1-(quinolin-2-yl, -3-yl, and -4-yl)benzenes. Restricted rotation of the 3-yl and 4-yl substituted derivatives is observed between the central core and the substituents, resulting in propeller-shaped molecules. Likewise, 1,2-diquinolinyl-3,4,5,6-tetraphenylbenzenes with 3-yl,3-yl and 3-yl,4-yl connectivity were prepared. As evidenced by NMR spectroscopy, they form two diasteromers due to their restricted rotation. A cobalt-catalyzed [2 + 2 + 2]-cyclotrimerization of 2-(phenylethynyl)quinoline resulted in the formation of triphenyl-2,4,6- and -3,5,6-tri(quinolin-2-yl)benzenes. The same reaction was applied to 3,3'-ethyne-1,2-diyldiquinoline which formed hexa(quinolin-3-yl)benzene. N-Methylation gave the title compounds. Among those, the hexacationic hexa(N-methylquinolinio-3-yl)benzene is described. Stereochemical aspects are predominantly discussed by means of results of NMR experiments. DFT-calculations on the most stable conformations and the frontier orbital profiles of the hexacation as well as of its neutral precursor have been carried out.

Abstract
In this work, two tailor-made luminogens comprising of electron donors (acridine and phenoxazine) and acceptor (triazine) bridged by the through-space conjugated hexaphenylbenzene (HPB) are synthesized and characterized. Their thermal stability, electrochemical behaviors, crystal, and electronic structures, and photophysical properties are systematically investigated. The crystal and electronic structures reveal that the peripheral phenyls in HPB are closely aligned in a propeller-like fashion, rendering efficient through-space charge transfer between donor and electron moieties. These molecules display weak fluorescence with negligible delayed component in solutions but strong fluorescence with greatly increased delayed component upon aggregate formation, namely aggregation-induced delayed fluorescence (AIDF). Their neat films exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY), and prominent delayed fluorescence. The non-doped organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on these new luminogens exhibit excellent performance with maximum external quantum efficiency of 12.7% and very small efficiency roll-off of 2.7% at 1,000 cd m−2. Designing AIDF molecules with through-space charge transfer could be a promising strategy to explore robust luminescent materials for efficient non-doped OLEDs.

Abstract
We report that α-acyloxy-β,γ-unsaturated cyclopentenones were used as starting substrates to make various trisubstituted cyclopentadienones. The substrates are easily available in one step from our previously developed protocol, and the potential of this cyclopentadienone formation method was demonstrated in a series of Diels-Alder reactions, forming dimerization products, dimethyl phthalate derivatives, and polyaryl benzene compounds.

Abstract
Through-bond conjugated molecules are the major frameworks for traditional molecular wires, while through-space conjugated units are rarely utilized and studied although they have shown unique conducting potential. Herein, we present novel single-molecule wires built on through-space conjugated hexaphenylbenzene. Their conductance, measured by the scanning tunneling microscopy based break-junction technique, increases with the improvement of through-space conjugation and finally reaches a remarkable value (12.28 nS) which greatly exceeds that of conventional through-bond conjugated counterpart (2.45 nS). The multichannel conducting model by integrating through-space and through-bond conjugations could be a promising strategy for the further design of robust single-molecule wires with advanced conductance and stability.

Abstract
Hexaarylbenzenes (HABs) have greatly attracted much attention due to their unique propeller-shaped structure and potential application in materials science, such as liquid crystals, molecular capsules/rotors, redox materials, nonlinear optical materials, as well as molecular wires. Less attention has however been paid to their propeller chirality. By introducing small point-chiral group(s) at the periphery of HABs, propeller chirality was effectively induced, provoking strong Cotton effects in the circular dichroism (CD) spectrum. Temperature and solvent polarity manipulate the dynamics of propeller inversion in solution. As such, whizzing toroids become more substantial in polar solvents and at an elevated temperature, where radial aromatic rings (propeller blades) prefer orthogonal alignment against the central benzene ring (C6 core), maximizing toroidal interactions.

Abstract
Since its discovery in 1825, benzene has served as one of the most used and indispensable building blocks of chemical compounds, ranging from pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals to plastics and those used in organic electronic devices. Benzene has six hydrogen atoms that can each be replaced by different substituents, which means that the structural diversity of benzene derivatives is intrinsically extraordinary. The number of possible substituted benzenes from n different substituents is (2n + 2n(2) + 4n(3) + 3n(4) + n(6))/12. However, owing to a lack of general synthetic methods for making multisubstituted benzenes, this potentially huge structural diversity has not been fully exploited. Here, we describe a programmed synthesis of hexaarylbenzenes using C-H activation, cross-coupling and [4+2] cycloaddition reactions. The present method allows for the isolation and structure-property characterization of hexaarylbenzenes with distinctive aryl substituents at all positions for the first time. Moreover, the established protocol can be applied to the synthesis of tetraarylnaphthalenes and pentaarylpyridines.

Abstract
A number of hexaarylbenzene compounds were studied theoretically, in order to compare energy changes as a result of the toroidal delocalization effect that is characteristic of all these species. The energy was studied taking advantage of locally designed isodesmic reactions. Results indicate that the amount of aromaticity manifested by each substituent is a factor that should be considered when assessing the quantity of energy dissipated from each aromatic center. The influence of different substituents on electronic delocalization is also analyzed, as well as the role played by their frontier molecular orbitals.
