Abstract
The pincer rare-earth dialkyl complexes [κ3-LRE(CH2SiMe3)2 (RE = Lu(1a), Yb(1b), Er(1c), Y(1d), Dy(1e))] with the indol-2-yl-based NCN pincer ligand were synthesized by the reactions of the proligand HL (L = 1-Me2NCH2CH2-3-(2-iPrC6H5N═CH)C8H4N) with RE(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2. These complexes exhibited a variety of reactivities toward organic compounds such as amines, triphenylphosphine ylide, N-phenylimidazole, pyridine derivatives, and o-carborane leading to σ-bond metathesis, migration insertion, and redox reaction products. The reactions of the dialkyl rare-earth metal complexes with o-carborane afforded the novel NCN pincer-ligated carboryne-based metallacyclopropanes which reacted with diphenyl ketone to give insertion products of the RE-C2-ind and one of the RE-Ccage bonds, while the reaction of the carboryne-based metallacyclopropanes with diphenyldiazomethane produced the di-aza-metallacyclopentanes via the insertions of the N═N bond of the diphenyldiazomethane into two RE-Ccage bonds and the RE-C2-ind bond. The reactions of the dialkyl complexes with 2 equiv of 2,2'-bipyridine afforded the pincer-ligated bis(2,2'-bipyridyl monoanionic radical) complexes via the homolytic redox reaction.

Abstract
Synthesis of a bulky anilidophosphine ligand (short PNTerph) and its lanthanum complexes 1 and 3 is reported. When exposed to KPHMes, both complexes form the first example of a bis-phosphanido-phosphinidene complex 2. This complex undergoes Phospha-Wittig type reactions and its reactivity towards strong bases is further investigated.

Abstract
Terminal rare-earth-metal imide complexes TptBu,MeLn(NC6H3iPr2-2,6)(dmap) of the mid-late rare-earth elements dysprosium and holmium were synthesized via double methane elimination of Lewis acid stabilized dialkyl precursors TptBu,MeLnMe(GaMe4) with primary aniline derivative H2NC6H3iPr2-2,6 (H2NAriPr). Exploiting the weaker Ln-CH3⋯[GaMe3] interaction compared to the aluminium congener, addition of the aniline derivative leads to the mixed methyl/anilido species TptBu,MeLnMe(HNAriPr) which readily eliminate methane after being exposed to the Lewis base DMAP ([double bond, length as m-dash]N,N-dimethyl-4-aminopyridine). Under the same conditions, [AlMe3]-stabilized dimethyl rare-earth-metal complexes transform immediately to Lewis acid bridged imides TptBu,MeLn(μ2-NC6H3Me2-2,6)(μ2-Me)AlMe2 (Ln = Dy, Ho). DMAP/THF donor exchange is accomplished by treatment of TptBu,MeLn(NC6H3iPr2-2,6)(dmap) with 9-BBN in THF while the terminal imides readily insert carbon dioxide to afford carbamate complexes.

Synthesis and catalytic activity of tetradentate β-diketiminato rare-earth metal monoalkyl complexes in tandem Oppenauer oxidation and cross-aldol condensation. Dalton Trans 2023; 53:267-275. Abstract
A series of unsymmetric tetradentate β-diketiminato rare-earth metal monoalkyl complexes were synthesized, and their catalytic behavior has been well developed. Indole-incorporated β-diketiminato proligands H2L (L = MeC(NDipp)CHC(Me)NCH2CH2-3-(1-R-C8H4N), R = CH2-(2-C4H7O), L1; R = (CH2)2OMe, L2; Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) were prepared by the reaction of an arylamino-enone with 1-substituted-tryptamine in good yields. Treatment of the proligands with the rare-earth metal trialkyl complexes RE(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 generated the corresponding unsymmetric N,N,C,O-tetradentate β-diketiminato rare-earth metal monoalkyl complexes LRE(CH2SiMe3) (L1, RE = Y (1a), Gd (1b), Yb (1c), Lu (1d); L2, RE = Y (2a), Gd (2b), Yb (2c), and Lu(2d)). During the process, the activation of the sp2 C-H bond at the 2-position of the indole ring led to the formation of an unprecedented β-diketiminato dianion L2-, bonding to the rare-earth metal ions in a chelating N,N,C,O-tetradentate manner. Further studies indicated that these tetradentate rare-earth metal complexes could initiate the Oppenauer oxidation of secondary alcohols into the corresponding ketones in high yields. In the case of primary alcohols, a tandem Oppenauer oxidation and cross-aldol condensation occurred unexpectedly. Various α-mono-substituted benzylidene acetones, α,α'-bis-substituted benzylidene acetones and cyclohexanones were obtained under mild conditions only by controlling the molar ratio of alcohols to ketones. Notably, all these alkenylation ketones exhibited exclusive E configuration.

Abstract
Terminal, nondirectional ionic "multiple" bond interactions between group 15 elements and rare-earth metals (Ln) have remained a challenging target until present. Although reports on terminal imide species have accumulated in the meantime, examples of terminal congeners with the higher homologue phosphorus are yet elusive. Herein, we present the synthesis of the first terminal yttrium organophosphinidene complex, TptBu,MeY(═PC6H3iPr2-2,6)(DMAP)2, according to a double-deprotonation sequence previously established for organoimides of the smaller rare-earth metals. Subsequent deprotonation of the primary phosphane H2PC6H3iPr2-2,6 (H2PAriPr) with discrete dimethyl compound TptBu,MeYMe2 in the presence of DMAP under simultaneous methane elimination generated a terminal multiply bonded phosphorus. The primary phosphide intermediates TptBu,MeYMe(HPAriPr) and TptBu,MeYMe(HNPAriPr)(DMAP) are isolable species and were also obtained and fully characterized for holmium and dysprosium. The Lewis acid-stabilized yttrium phosphinidene TptBu,MeY[(μ2-PAriPr)(μ2-Me)AlMe2] was obtained by treatment of H2PAriPr with TptBu,MeYMe(AlMe4) but could not be converted into a terminal phosphinidene via cleavage of trimethylaluminum. The corresponding reaction of H2PAriPr with TptBu,MeYMe(GaMe4) led to adduct [GaMe3(PH2AriPr)] rather than to the formation of a yttrium phosphinidene. The yttrium-phosphorus interaction in the obtained organophosphide and phosphinidene complexes was scrutinized by 31P/89Y NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations, unambiguously supporting the existence of multiple bonding.

Abstract
A 2,2'-bipyridyl calcium complex based on a tridentate ligand [CH3C(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)CHC(CH3)NCH2CH2N(CH3)2]Ca(bipy)(THF) (1) was prepared by the reduction of {[CH3C(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)CHC(CH3)NCH2CH2N(CH3)2]CaI(THF)}2 with potassium graphite in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy). Complex 1 is a good Ca(I)synthon, as shown by its reactivity with I2, PhCH2SSCH2Ph, PhCH2SeSeCH2Ph and 9-fluorenone, yielding the calcium iodide complex [CH3C(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)CHC(CH3)NCH2CH2N(CH3)2]CaI(bipy) (2), calcium thiolate [CH3C(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)CHC(CH3)NCH2CH2N(CH3)2]Ca(SCH2Ph)(bipy) (3), calcium selenolate [CH3C(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)CHC(CH3)NCH2CH2N(CH3)2]Ca(SeCH2Ph)(bipy) (4), and calcium ketyl complex [CH3C(N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)CHC(CH3)NCH2CH2N(CH3)2]Ca[O-(9-C13H8˙)](bipy)·2THF (5·2THF), respectively. In addition, reactions of complex 5 with CS2, CH2CHCH2Br and PhCH2Br give the corresponding dimeric bis(thiolate) complex {[S2CC(CMe(NAr))C(Me)NCH2CH2NMe2]Ca(DME)}2 (6), dimeric calcium bromide complex {[(9-CH2CHCH2-C13H8-9)-O]CaBr(THF)(bipy)}2 (7) and {[(9-C6H5CH2-C13H8-9)-O]CaBr[O-(9-C13H8)](bipy)}2 (8). These results demonstrated that the calcium ketyl complex 5 can also be employed as a single-electron transfer reagent. All the new compounds were characterized by various spectroscopic methods, and their solid-state structures were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

Abstract
Group 3- and 4f-element organometallic chemistry and reactivity are decisively driven by the rare-earth-metal/lanthanide (Ln) ion size and associated electronegativity/ionicity/Lewis acidity criteria. For these reasons, the synthesis of terminal "unsupported" imides [Ln═NR] of the smaller, closed-shell Sc(III), Lu(III), Y(III), and increasingly covalent Ce(IV) has involved distinct reaction protocols while derivatives of the "early" large Ln(III) have remained elusive. Herein, we report such terminal imides of open-shell lanthanide cations Ce(III), Nd(III), and Sm(III) according to a new reaction protocol. Lewis-acid-stabilized methylidene complexes [TptBu,MeLn(μ3-CH2){(μ2-Me)MMe2}2] (Ln = Ce, Nd, Sm; M = Al, Ga) react with 2,6-diisopropylaniline (H2NAriPr) via methane elimination. The formation of arylimide complexes is governed by the Ln(III) size, the Lewis acidity of the group 13 metal alkyl, steric factors, the presence of a donor solvent, and the sterics and acidity (pKa) of the aromatic amine. Crucially, terminal arylimides [TptBu,MeLn(═NAriPr)(THF)2] (Ln = Ce, Nd, Sm) are formed only for M = Ga, and for M = Al, the Lewis-acid-stabilized imides [TptBu,MeLn(NAriPr)(AlMe3)] (Ln = Ce, Nd, Sm) are persistent. In stark contrast, the [GaMe3]-stabilized imide [TptBu,MeLn(NAriPr)(GaMe3)] (Ln = Nd, Sm) is reversibly formed in noncoordinating solvents.

Abstract
While the chemistry of trivalent rare-earth metal hydrido complexes has been well developed in the past 40 years, that of the divalent rare-earth metal hydrido complexes remains in its infancy because of the synthetic challenge of such complexes. In this paper, we report the synthesis and structural characterization of a divalent ytterbium hydrido complex supported by a bulky β-diketiminato-based tetradentate ligand. This hydrido complex is a dimer containing two μ-hydrogen ligands, and it easily undergoes a hydrido shift reaction to form a new divalent ytterbium hydrido complex that contains only one hydrido bridge. Furthermore, this hydrido complex reacts with pyridine and pyridine derivatives, showing versatile reactivity [Yb-H addition to pyridine, hydrido shift to ancillary ligand, and ytterbium(II)-center-induced redox reaction with bipyridine]. This hydrido complex reacts with Ph3P═O, resulting in a P-CPh cleavage of Ph3P═O and an elimination of C6H6; on the other hand, the reaction with Ph3P═S is a hydrido coupling-based redox reaction. The reactions of this hydrido complex with 1 and 2 equiv of PhSSPh clearly indicate that the hydrido coupling-based redox reaction is prior to the ytterbium(II) oxidation-based redox reaction.

Abstract
Synthesis of silacycle compounds are of fundamental and application importance. Herein we report the first example of insertion of metal-substituted silylene fragment into naphthalene's aromatic ring. More significantly, this insertion is followed by interesting rearrangements to yield silaspiro-benzocycloheptenyl and cyclobutenosilaindan derivatives. The formation of cyclobutenosilaindan derivative includes the C-C bond cleavage and 4π electrocyclization steps; the formation of silaspiro-benzocycloheptenyl derivative is more complicated, including the C-C bond cleavage, reversible 4π electrocyclization, C-H bond activation and C-Si bond cleavage. DFT investigations were carried out to shed light on the mechanistic aspects of these two rearrangements. The formed cyclobutenosilaindan potassium can readily react with PhOH, MeOTf, EtOTf, PhCH2 Cl or PhCOCl at room temperature to afford the hydrogen, alkyl, benzyl or benzoyl substituted cyclobutenosilaindans in high yields.

Abstract
We report the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of a new low-symmetry β-diketimine featuring a pendant amino(methyl)phenol donor and its corresponding heteroleptic rare-earth (RE) complexes. This includes the first structurally characterized examples of alcoholysis and insertion from an isolated REIII amide in a β-diketimine framework. The flexible methylene linkage leads to REIII complexes with tunable dynamic solution behavior that defines their stoichiometric and catalytic reactivity. The addition of a strong neutral donor ligand, tricyclohexylphosphine oxide, suppresses a prevalent catalyst degradation pathway (base-promoted elimination) and dramatically enhances the catalyst performance in the stereospecific ring-opening polymerization of rac-β-butyrolactone. Our results further demonstrate the importance of ligand reorganization in the stoichiometric and catalytic activity of REIII ions.

Abstract
The synthesis and catalytic applications of trivalent rare-earth metal alkyl complexes have been well developed, but the chemistry of divalent rare-earth metal alkyl complexes lagged much behind. Herein, we report the synthesis, structure, and catalytic applications of a samarium(II) monoalkyl complex supported by a β-diketiminato-based tetradentate ligand, [LSmCH(SiMe3 )2 ] (L=[MeC(NDipp)CHC(Me)NCH2 CH2 N(Me)CH2 CH2 NMe2 ]- , Dipp=2,6-(iPr)2 C6 H3 ). This complex is synthesized by the salt metathesis reaction of samarium iodide [LSm(μ-I)]2 and KCH(SiMe3 )2 in 63 % yield. Its structure is characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, showing a distorted square-pyramid coordination geometry. This samarium(II) monoalkyl complex exhibits high catalytic activity in the hydrosilylation of aryl and methyl-substituted unsymmetrical internal alkynes with secondary hydrosilanes, selectively providing the α-(E) products in high yields.

Abstract
A set of complexes containing dative interactions between a rare-earth metal and carbon are reported. Complex 2, Br3Ce(CDP)(THF), with a Ce←C bond was synthesized by the reaction of CeBr3 with a carbon(0) ligand, carbodiphosphorane (CDP). More significantly, a trivalent cerium complex 3, [BrCe(CDP)2](BPh4)2, with two σ dative interactions C→Ce←C was also isolated, which represents an unusual example of two dative interactions formed with the same atom in a molecule. Furthermore, π donation by the second lone-pair electrons of the CDP ligand is rather weak. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the Ce-C bond lengths in these complexes are comparable with those in cerium(iii)-carbene species. Density functional theory calculations support the dative interaction formation in these complexes and the strength of σ-donation in 3 is stronger than that in 2.

Abstract
The oxidation and disproportionation of anionic phosphide ligands in yttrium complexes with elemental sulfur and selenium are reported. The mixed TpMe2/Cp supported yttrium phosphide complex TpMe2CpYPPh2(THF) (1) reacted with one equiv. of elemental S or Se in THF at room temperature to deliver two structurally characterized yttrium dithio- or monoseleno-phosphinates TpMe2CpYS2PPh2(THF) (2) and TpMe2CpYSePPh2(THF) (4Se), respectively. Further investigations showed that the yttrium thiophosphinate TpMe2CpYSPPh2(THF) (4S) can be isolated from the reactions of 2 and 1 or 1 and elemental S in a short reaction time. Moreover, after keeping 4S or 4Se in THF solution for some days, 2 or [(TpMe2)2Y]+[Se2PPh2]- (5) was obtained by a disproportionation process. The mechanism for the construction of the Ph2PE- and Ph2PE2- (E = S, Se) ligands has been discussed based on the in situ NMR experiments and some designed reactions.

Abstract
The reaction of LnI2(thf)2 with benzyl potassium affords the homoleptic benzyl complexes [Ln(CH2Ph)2]n of samarium, europium, and ytterbium. In the cases of Eu and Yb, the treatment of [Ln(CH2Ph)2]n with one equivalent of 2,6-diisopropylaniline gives access to tetrameric organoimide complexes [(thf)Ln(μ3-NDipp)]4, representing the first examples of homometallic Ln(ii) imides. This study revealed that the Yb(ii) organoimide chemistry is significantly different from that of calcium.

Abstract
Research into transition metal complexes bearing multiply bonded main-group ligands has developed into a thriving and fruitful field over the past half century. These complexes, featuring terminal M═E/M≡E (M = transition metal; E = main-group element) multiple bonds, exhibit unique structural properties as well as rich reactivity, which render them attractive targets for inorganic/organometallic chemists as well as indispensable tools for organic/catalytic chemists. This fact has been highlighted by their widespread applications in organic synthesis, for example, as olefin metathesis catalysts. In the ongoing renaissance of transition metal-ligand multiple-bonding chemistry, there have been reports of M═E/M≡E interactions for the majority of the metallic elements of the periodic table, even some actinide metals. In stark contrast, the largest subgroup of the periodic table, rare-earth metals (Ln = Sc, Y, and lanthanides), have been excluded from this upsurge. Indeed, the synthesis of terminal Ln═E/Ln≡E multiple-bonding species lagged behind that of the transition metal and actinide congeners for decades. Although these species had been pursued since the discovery of a rare-earth metal bridging imide in 1991, such a terminal (nonpincer/bridging hapticities) Ln═E/Ln≡E bond species was not obtained until 2010. The scarcity is mainly attributed to the energy mismatch between the frontier orbitals of the metal and the ligand atoms. This renders the putative terminal Ln═E/Ln≡E bonds extremely reactive, thus resulting in the formation of aggregates and/or reaction with the ligand/environment, quenching the multiple-bond character. In 2010, the stalemate was broken by the isolation and structural characterization of the first rare-earth metal terminal imide-a scandium terminal imide-by our group. The double-bond character of the Sc═N bond was unequivocally confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Theoretical investigations revealed the presence of two p-d π bonds between the scandium ion and the nitrogen atom of the imido ligand and showed that the dianionic [NR]2- imido ligand acts as a 2σ,4π electron donor. Subsequent studies of the scandium terminal imides revealed highly versatile and intriguing reactivity of the Sc═N bond. This included cycloaddition toward various unsaturated bonds, C-H/Si-H/B-H bond activations and catalytic hydrosilylation, dehydrofluorination of fluoro-substituted benzenes/alkanes, CO2 and H2 activations, activation of elemental selenium, coordination with other transition metal halides, etc. Since our initial success in 2010, and with contributions from us and across the community, this young, vibrant research field has rapidly flourished into one of the most active frontiers of rare-earth metal chemistry. The prospect of extending Ln═N chemistry to other rare-earth metals and/or different metal oxidation states, as well as exploiting their stoichiometric and catalytic reactivities, continues to attract research effort. Herein we present an account of our investigations into scandium terminal imido chemistry as a timely summary, in the hope that our studies will be of interest to this readership.
